Monday's Mineral: Igneous Quartz

Quartz is an interesting mineral that forms both in igneous and sedimentary settings. Today, we will look into the igneous side of things in a bit more detail.

Quartz is a major component of silica-rich igneous rocks also known as felsic rocks. In granite, quartz can make up to 25% of the composition (feldspar makes up the majority).

Quartz is a large component of pegmatites as well. Pegmatites are a type of intrusive igneous rock with a similar composition to granite but on a smaller scale and far less homogenous. Pegmatites are the last part of a magma body to crystallize. This final fluid fraction is high in volatile and trace elements.

Quartz can also form in hydrothermal veins. Hydrothermal veins are a combination of two ways minerals form: heat and precipitation from water. Magma is not just molten rock. It also contains water and because it is underground and under a ton of pressure, that water stays a liquid. At the temperatures that hydrothermal water reaches, it can dissolve a lot of minerals, including silicon dioxide (chemical formula for quartz). As the magma cools, the last part that is still water contains quartz and it can seep into cracks in rocks where it eventually precipitates out.

what kind of rock is the rock you post? it looks kinda igneous to me but i cant totally tell

I took earth science two years ago and blacked out most of the rock identification unit (I LOVE ROCKS but I hate hate rock identification theres so many rules my brain cant handle it) but id probably say yes to igneous, id take a wild guess at something granite-y, its def felsic and pretty course grained in places, and not fucked up enough to be sedimentary or metamorphic

Science Saturday: Feldspars, Sandstones, and Dating

Did you know that you can use feldspars to tell you how old a rock is? Did you know they can tell you about how long a paleo river is?

That's okay! Let me tell you about it then! So, due to the unstable nature of feldspars they can be used in a special method to date rocks called luminescence.

Luminescence dating is used to determine how long ago mineral grains were last exposed to light.

This is generally only used for surface dating usually in storm or tsunami deposits so scientists can see how much sediment gets moved.

As for river length, here's how we figure that out. River's deposit sand. Over time, sand is compressed into sandstone. Sandstones are categorized by the amount of quartz, feldspar and lithics (rock fragments) that are present.

Arkose or arkosic sandstone refers to sandstone with at least 25% feldspar composition. Arkose usually forms from the weathering of granite and must be deposited rapidly to avoid hydrolysis (check out last Science Saturday).

Now, because it has to be deposited quickly, this means that arkose occurs very close to the source rock. We call this a texturally immature sandstone.

Not that kind of immature. Immature in the sense that it got buried young. If you look at a river diagram, arkose occur near the head of the river either in conglomerates or very course sands. By the time you get the river delta, usually all that is left is quartz.

Peter and Exandroth is not even the traditional ship to me, it’s not even like eldritchstrings where they’re just soooo toxic for each other. It’s like.. Peter and Exandroth hate each other but they are each other but they’re nothing without the other but they’re something with each other but they HATE each other but they’re best friends but they hate being the same person but at least they’re both finally Somebody but who are they anyway can’t they be a what but they HATE each otherrrrr . Erm

What I mean to say is it’s not even a cut and dry “there is romantic love here” kind of ship. It’s like.. they need need each other so much, or they manage to develop this fucked up friendship. They’ll always hate each other but on that same coin they’ll always have each other. Until of course, they don’t. The weirdest and most uncomfortable grieving period you’ve ever conceived of simply radiating off of Peter. Maybe Peter’s just a good person, maybe he just misses the company and it doesn’t matter who it was- but he’s not alone anymore. So why does he miss the company? In a weird, fucked up sort of way? Why does this absence mean anything? Why is it.. almost tragic. He tells himself he’s just a good person, that he’d mourn the death of anyone. Right? Were they friends? When he’d ask he’d always get told no, of course sometimes Exandroth would ask and Peter would be the one saying no. No, they weren’t friends. He wants to ask again, maybe the answer would change, he knows it wouldn’t. It doesn’t matter. Theres nobody there to ask anymore. Maybe Peter has a habit of talking to nothing these days….

What I mean to say is- and let’s just call it fallenangel for now unless I come up with something else (I was thinking something to do with particular rocks but idk yet I’m not good at this)- fallenangel is less a romantic ship and more.. two outcasts who’s relationship with one another is so imperative to their own individual identities that they feel as tho, at times, they are one identity. One thing. One person? One.. couple? In love? No, in hate. In desperation.
