Kitchen Trends for Tiles/Countertops - What’s in, What’s Out?
Remodeling a kitchen is a significant project that takes a lot of planning, time, effort, and not to forget, a sizable budget. Many of the elements that go into a kitchen can’t be changed out in a year or two if you decide in the future that you don’t like them. A coffee table in your living room can easily be replaced. Your kitchen cabinets are there to stay much longer. If you’re getting ready for a kitchen renovation and checking out tiles stores in Ottawa, you should know the trends that are fading out of fashion and which ones are chic and timeless.
Outdated Elements of Kitchen Design
Kitchen fads come and go. Remember avocado green or harvest gold appliances? Aren’t you glad that those colours are out? Modern colour choices are natural browns and greens, but we’ve seen many combinations over the years. Some kitchen trends make your kitchen feel modern and chic. Other trends can become outdated so quickly, your kitchen might feel out of style in just a year. Here are some kitchen fads that are losing popularity.
· Open Shelving
· Colourful Appliances
· Rustic Wood
· Tiled Countertops
· Glass Mosaic Background Tiles
Timeless Kitchen Trends
A little black dress is a timeless fashion piece. You might need to update it with trendy jewelry and shoes, but the LBD is a classic standard in most women’s wardrobes. It’s the same with your kitchen. There are some standard elements and features that simply never go out of style.
Everyone always wants pantry space. Most kitchens can always use more drawers and counterspace. The traditional kitchen triangle of stove, sink and refrigerator is still one of the most efficient layouts for a kitchen design. When you’re remodeling, think about these timeless kitchen trends.
· Natural Stone Countertops
· Subway Tiles
· Sustainability
· Open Kitchens

French Style Chateau
Have you checked out the video yet!?
youtube
Now on to the primary suite, this main bedroom was huge, including a massive ensuite with a round stained glass window…as well as a few more photos of the staircase from the second floor!!
This mansion was built in 1985 on two lots in The Bridle Path neighbourhood of Toronto, Canada and was designed to resemble a French style chateau. The 30,000 square foot mega mansion had 10 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, and was located on a huge four acre property that also included a tennis court. It also had a granite cobblestone driveway, a horseshoe staircase at the back and extensive gardens which completed the experience of living in a castle in France.
Originally built by Robert Campeau a financier and real estate developer. Robert began his career by building just one single house in 1949 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. His company then known as Campeau Corp was also responsible for building Scotia Plaza, a hi rise built in 1988 in the financial district of Toronto, as well as the Harbour Castle Hotel in 1975. In the 80s, Campeau began a series of leveraged buyouts of companies, both in Canada and the United States. The final company was Federated Department Stores, the owners of Bloomingdale's for $7 billion. This was the beginning of the end for Campeau Corp, as they filed for Bankruptcy in 1990, one of the largest in history. Robert was forced to sell the home in 1990.
The home was purchased in 2002 by Harold and Sara Springer who entrusted architect Gordon Ridgely, interior designer Brian Gluckstein, and landscape architect Ronald Holbrook to bring their vision to life. They brought in 17th century antique furniture from france, original royal academy paintings, Italian marble and even crystal chandeliers.
Other features of the large house included a two-story indoor Olympic-size swimming pool with a retractable floor that converts into a ballroom. It also had an elevator, an oak wood bar, recording studio and even its very own bomb shelter!
The mansion has been featured in several movies including Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's 'It Takes Two', 'Kissinger and Nixon', 'That Old Feeling' as well as most recently in an episode of Suits. A party was also held for Jane Fonda in the two-storey ballroom, which was then disassembled overnight so that Campeau could swim in the pool the next day with Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
The Springer's listed the chateau for sale including all of its contents starting in 2014 for $25 million and was last publicly listed in 2018 for $39,500,000. Finally, the home was purchased by Nascond Holdings in 2020 for $30.8 million.
Nascond Holdings is a company owned by the Muzzo Group which is a well known development company in the area. Marco Muzzo caused a drunk driving crash that killed four people and seriously injured two others. It was a very high profile incident several years ago, because of his ties to such a wealthy family. There was also a guest list of people found in the home including Marco's name as the host of the party.
The mansion was demolished shortly after my visit in August of 2022. Not much happened after that until more recently when some activity began to happen on the property. Ferris Rafauli who was also behind Drake's Bridle Path Mansion, is the designer and builder behind the new mansion that will take shape in the coming years.

East Ontario: Bon Echo and Ottawa areas
And off I go! 9am Thursday 1st June I'm starting my cross Canada road trip with an overloaded car and at 54,836km...
First stop is one of my favourite things in Ontario; paddle boarding along the Mazinaw Rock in Bon Echo Provincial Park, midway between Toronto and Ottawa. After having traversed the entire GTA one last time on the QEW, Gardiner, DVP and 401 highways, I finally escaped the madness and got to spend a few lovely hours on the water, searching for the pictographs that Indigenous people created a long time ago. The first time I tried to find them was with my mother by kayak, but not having a clue what it exactly was that we were looking for, we found none until we realised on a boat tour that they're tiny and just above the water, whereas we had been craning our neck to scour the high cliffs for anything that seemed remotely like a drawing 😂. Since then, I had already come back once to explore by SUP, however now in the mid-week quiet without other tourists & motorboats it was magical!
Starting my trip during an unexpected heatwave (32C!) has been tiring as I was constantly sweating but at least it meant I was not freezing at night which had been my fear. In the morning I did my regular 20-minute hulahoop wake-up routine but this time on the beach overlooking the cliffs... Great way to start the day and as bonus there were no mosquitos!! I kinda had forgotten how bad it can be in spring, but after two miserable attempts at a hike, I realised I will be doing most of my exploring by water until the bugs have died off. That said, so far it's only been mosquitos which have mass-targeted me, without the deer/black/sand/other nasty flies, so I guess it can & will still get much worse.
Instead of hiking, I ended up paddling two little lakes at Sheffield Conservation Area just south of Bon Echo, which is the most southern location to experience the Canadian Shield... it was not as majestic as up north but the bare granite rocks hold their beauty wherever they are! The channel between the lakes turned out to be blocked by a beaver dam, which made me realize that the pretty water lilies that I had seen earlier were basically the beaver's vegetable garden 😜. I had never seen a beaver dam up close from the water, so it was cool to see how it's constructed with a slope of soil upstream, intertwined with branches for extra stability. I tried to spot the beaver as well, but no luck (the only time I've seen a beaver was at Leslie Spit in Toronto of all places!). Someone had already created a little portage trail around the dam so that I could continue to the next lake and eat lunch on a little island (with my feet out of the water as the fish were trying to nibble).
Am now on a campground on the Quebec side for 3 nights to spend some time around Ottawa; after not having done a campfire on the first night I was looking forward to one and bought a 1-kilo bag of marshmallows and my favourite chocolate (dark, orange & sea salt) for s'mores, but the entire province is under a fire ban due to the many forest fires that are out of control.... Am afraid this is going to be a recurring theme this summer, we need to fix climate change asap!! Without a fire to chase them away, I'm already completely fed up with the mosquitos at the end of the 2nd day, so I spent the evening in my "living room" tent, which is a blissful haven to eat, read and drink some wine.
Spent Saturday very chilled in the capital; although downtown Ottawa is small it is very lively due to all the tourists (like me) and I always enjoy walking around the highlights; I had planned to visit the National Art Gallery but wasn't attracted by any of the current exhibits so gave it a miss and visited the neighbouring Royal Mint instead for what turned out to be a private tour of the facilities - cool to see how they make 99.99% pure silver and gold coins! Thereafter past the Rideau Canal to Parliament Hill which was disappointing because of the construction but also because I couldn't find my favourite sculpture 'Women are Persons!" celebrating the suffragette movement that allowed women to vote...I did find it later in front of the Senate building, but only after I attended (unplanned) the annual D-Day commemorative ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We cannot afford forgetting the horrible impacts of war so it was a sobering but important moment. I ended on a Byward patio; nothing beats drinking a beer in the sun and watch the world go by!
And today I had a beautiful day at Gatineau Park where I had never been despite having wanted to on previous trips, due to rain/snow etc...I initially did not plan to hike and go supping instead but there was a lot of wind and it turned out no mosquitos due to the cooler weather, so I ended up doing several hikes after all, up to some viewpoints that were no longer visible (as is often the case as they don't cut the trees so that beautiful view when the bench was installed 10+ years ago is long gone), around Pink Lake which is green from the many algae, and to a waterfall that hadn't seen a lot of rain but was pretty nevertheless. I always struggle with making forest hike pictures interesting as it's very green without much variation and not able to capture the true essence of hearing the wind & the birds, the dappled light on the forest floor etc. Tried anyway, and also made a picture of the forest along the parkway to capture the bright apple green of the trees in spring, so refreshing! Ended the day at the Champlain lookout over the Ottawa valley.
Not sure I'll keep up writing so much each time but am clearly excited about how the trip has started so far! 😍
Wildlife: 1 marmot (Bon Echo), 2 male mergansers fighting with each other (Bon Echo), 10,000 mosquitos (Bon Echo), 2 snakes (Toronto Island and Sheffield), 2 turtles (Gatineau), 2 deer (along the road in Gatineau)
SUPs: three (Toronto Island, Bon Echo, Sheffield)
Hikes: one small one (eaten alive) and one aborted (more eaten alive), both at Bon Echo. Three hikes at Gatineau (no single mosquito bite!)

From Drab to Fab: Inspiring Kitchen Renovation Ideas for Every Home
The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home—a space where meals are prepared, memories are made, and families gather. If your kitchen feels outdated, cramped, or uninspired, a renovation can transform it into a functional and stylish haven. Whether you’re looking for a complete overhaul or just a few updates, here are some inspiring Kitchen Renovation Ottawa ideas to spark your creativity.
1. Open Up Your Space
If your kitchen feels cramped, consider knocking down walls to create an open-concept layout. Open kitchens seamlessly integrate with dining and living areas, making them ideal for entertaining. An open design not only improves flow but also allows for more natural light, making the space feel larger and more inviting.
Tip: Consult with a contractor to ensure that any walls you plan to remove are non-load-bearing.
2. Upgrade Your Cabinets
Cabinets can dramatically impact the look and functionality of your kitchen. If your cabinets are outdated or worn, consider:
Refinishing or Painting: A fresh coat of paint or stain can give your cabinets a whole new life. Light colors can brighten a small space, while bold colors can add personality.
Replacing Doors: If the cabinet frames are still in good condition, consider just replacing the doors with modern styles, such as shaker or flat-panel designs.
Adding Open Shelving: Open shelves can create a contemporary look and provide easy access to your favorite dishware or cookbooks.
3. Invest in Quality Countertops
Countertops are both functional and aesthetic focal points in the kitchen. Upgrading to high-quality materials can elevate the overall look. Consider:
Quartz: Durable and low-maintenance, quartz offers a wide variety of colors and patterns.
Granite: A classic choice, granite is heat and scratch-resistant and adds a touch of luxury.
Butcher Block: Perfect for a warm, rustic feel, butcher block is excellent for food prep and adds character.
4. Refresh Your Backsplash
A new backsplash can instantly update the look of your kitchen. Consider these ideas:
Subway Tiles: Timeless and versatile, subway tiles can be arranged in various patterns to create a stylish backdrop.
Mosaic Tiles: Colorful mosaic tiles can add visual interest and personality to your kitchen.
Bold Patterns: For a statement piece, opt for patterned tiles or even peel-and-stick options for a quick update.
5. Upgrade Appliances
Modern appliances can improve functionality and energy efficiency in your kitchen. Consider upgrading to stainless steel or energy-efficient models that not only look sleek but also save you money on utility bills. Look for features that suit your cooking style, such as smart technology, double ovens, or induction cooktops.
6. Enhance Lighting
Lighting plays a crucial role in both the functionality and ambiance of your kitchen. Layered lighting can create a warm and inviting atmosphere:
Pendant Lights: Install stylish pendant lights above islands or dining areas to create focal points.
Under-Cabinet Lighting: This practical solution not only brightens your workspace but also adds a modern touch.
Recessed Lighting: For a clean and contemporary look, recessed lighting can provide even illumination throughout the kitchen.
7. Create a Functional Layout
A well-designed layout enhances the kitchen’s efficiency. Consider the work triangle—ensuring the stove, sink, and refrigerator are in a convenient arrangement for cooking. If space allows, add an island for extra prep space and seating.
Tip: If your kitchen is small, consider a galley layout that maximizes efficiency without sacrificing style.
8. Incorporate Smart Storage Solutions
Maximize your kitchen’s functionality with clever storage solutions:
Pull-Out Drawers: These make accessing pots and pans easier and can help keep your cabinets organized.
Lazy Susans: Ideal for corner cabinets, lazy Susans ensure every item is within reach.
Vertical Storage: Use tall cabinets or shelves to make the most of vertical space, and consider hanging pots and pans to free up counter space.
9. Add Personal Touches
Make your kitchen feel like home by incorporating personal touches that reflect your style:
Art and Decor: Hang artwork or display decorative items on shelves to add character.
Plants: Incorporate greenery with potted herbs or small plants that thrive in kitchen environments.
Textiles: Add color and warmth with stylish curtains, table linens, or area rugs.
10. Consider Sustainability
If you’re eco-conscious, consider incorporating sustainable materials and practices into your Renovations In Ottawa. Look for reclaimed wood for cabinets, energy-efficient appliances, and low-VOC paints to create a healthier kitchen environment.
Conclusion
Transforming your kitchen from drab to fab is an exciting journey that can significantly enhance your home and lifestyle. By considering these inspiring renovation ideas, you can create a space that is not only beautiful but also functional and tailored to your needs. Whether you tackle a full renovation or just make a few updates, the result will be a kitchen that you and your family will love for years to come. Happy renovating!

Edmonton, AB (No. 5)
The Hudson's Bay Company Department Store is a three-storey Tyndall stone and black granite commercial building occupying an entire block-face on Jasper Avenue in downtown Edmonton.
HERITAGE VALUE
The Hudson's Bay Company Department Store is significant because of its association with the Hudson's Bay Company (H.B.C.), which played an essential role in the early development of Edmonton. Having been established as an H.B.C. fort, Edmonton's growth was integrally linked to the growth of the company. The 1939 building's large size reflected the company's later retail growth and its strong presence in the city's downtown until the store was closed in 1984. The Hudson's Bay Company Department Store is also significant because it is a rare and excellent surviving example of the Moderne style of architecture in Edmonton. Founded on smooth, clean and simple lines, the style paid tribute to the emerging machine age, which reflected optimism for the future. The design of the store was meant not only to herald in the new age of technology, but also to ride the wave of success associated with the new style and the economic recovery of the late 1930s and 1940s which fostered it. The Hudson's Bay Company Department Store is also significant for its association with the Winnipeg architectural firm of Moody and Moore, formed in 1936, which was among the first western Canadian firms to introduce the International Style to the Prairies. They designed the H.B.C. Stores (both new buildings and additions) in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg and elsewhere. The Hudson's Bay Company Department Store is valued as a landmark along Jasper Avenue. The building occupies an entire block-face with minimal setback, sparsely articulated walls and little fenestration above the ground floor, which contribute to the building's imposing appearance, despite its low horizontal massing. The large scale and prominent carvings on the building ornament the exterior and contribute to its monumental scale and presence. The Hudson's Bay Company Department Store is also significant because of its association with architects Kelvin C. Stanley and Company, who designed the north addition in 1955. Stanley was recognized for his prominent modern designs in Edmonton, including the 1957 Edmonton City Hall. He later became Director of Structures for Expo 67 and Chief Architect for the federal Department of Public Works in Ottawa.

Ottawa Kitchen Renovation Essentials
A successful kitchen renovation in Ottawa involves careful planning and execution. Important factors include effective design strategies, material selection, and hiring qualified professionals to bring the vision to life.
Designing Your Dream Kitchen
Creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchen starts with a solid design plan. Homeowners should consider the kitchen layout, which can significantly impact flow and usability. Common designs include the L-shaped, U-shaped, and galley layouts.
Key elements to focus on include:
Work Triangle: Ensure that the refrigerator, stove, and sink are positioned for easy access.
Storage Solutions: Incorporate cabinets, drawers, and pantry space to keep clutter at bay.
Lighting: Utilize a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to enhance both functionality and mood.
Incorporating personalized touches, such as color schemes and decorative elements, can reflect individual style while maximizing efficiency.
Choosing the Right Materials
Selecting materials plays a crucial role in both aesthetics and durability. Popular choices for countertops include granite, quartz, and laminate, each offering different benefits. Granite provides natural durability, while quartz is known for its low maintenance.
Cabinet materials vary widely, ranging from solid wood to plywood and MDF. Solid wood is a classic option for its longevity, while MDF can be more cost-effective.
Flooring options should also be considered. Hardwood, tile, and luxury vinyl are popular choices, each offering distinct advantages in terms of maintenance and style.
It's essential to balance cost, durability, and style when selecting materials for a kitchen renovation.

Comprehensive Guide to Basement Renovations
Basement renovations can enhance living space and increase property value. Proper planning, waterproofing, and selecting the right contractors are crucial for a successful outcome.
Basement Renovation Planning
Effective planning is essential for any basement renovation. Homeowners should begin by defining the purpose of the space, whether it’s a recreational area, guest suite, or home office.
Key considerations include:
Budget: Determine the total amount available for renovations.

Permits: Research local building codes and necessary permits before starting.
Timeline: Establish an expected completion date to manage the project efficiently.
Careful planning helps prevent unnecessary costs and ensures the project aligns with the homeowner’s vision.
Waterproofing and Foundation Considerations
Waterproofing is crucial for basement renovations to prevent moisture issues. A damp basement can lead to mold and structural damage. Homeowners should assess their foundation and address any existing water intrusion problems.
Recommended waterproofing methods include:
Exterior Waterproofing: This involves excavating around the foundation, applying a waterproof barrier, and installing drainage systems.
Interior Waterproofing: Techniques such as sealants and sump pumps can be installed.
Additionally, it is essential to check for cracks or structural issues that might affect the renovation. Addressing these concerns early on guarantees a safe, durable space.

Granite: Extremely durable and resistant to stains, granite is ideal for high-traffic areas.
Limestone: Limestone provides a natural, earthy look with subtle color variations.
Sandstone: Sandstone is easy to work with and comes in warm, inviting colors.
Factors to Consider
When selecting the stone for your patio, consider factors such as durability, color, texture, and cost. It's also essential to choose a stone that complements the overall style of your garden and home.
Designing Your Stone Patio
Planning and Layout
Before you start building your patio, create a detailed plan. Consider the following elements:
Purpose: Determine how you will use the patio. Will it be for dining, lounging, or as a pathway?
Size and Shape: Decide on the dimensions and layout that best suit your garden's size and shape.
Flow: Ensure that the patio integrates seamlessly with other garden features, such as pathways and flower beds.
Creative Design Ideas
1. Incorporate Natural Elements
Enhance your stone patio by incorporating natural elements such as water features, plants, and trees. A small pond, fountain, or waterfall can add a soothing ambiance, while carefully placed plants can provide shade and privacy.
2. Use Different Stone Patterns
Experiment with different stone patterns to create visual interest. Some popular patterns include:
Herringbone: This pattern uses rectangular stones laid out in a zigzag formation.
Basket Weave: Stones are laid in pairs to create a woven effect.
Running Bond: Stones are laid in a staggered pattern, similar to brickwork.
Random: A mix of different stone sizes and shapes for a more natural look.
3. Add Outdoor Furniture
Choose outdoor furniture that complements your stone patio's design. Materials such as wrought iron, teak, or rattan work well with natural stone. Consider adding comfortable seating, a dining table, and even an outdoor kitchen to enhance functionality.
4. Integrate Lighting
Incorporate various lighting options to extend the usability of your patio into the evening. String lights, lanterns, and solar-powered path lights can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Uplighting on trees or spotlights on key features can add drama and highlight your garden's beauty.
5. Create Multi-Level Spaces
If your garden has varying elevations, consider creating a multi-level stone patio. This can add depth and interest to your design, while also defining different areas for different activities. Use retaining walls, steps, and terraces to achieve this effect.
Building Your Stone Patio
Site Preparation
Proper site preparation is crucial for a successful Ottawa Interlock Installation. Follow these steps:
Mark the Area: Outline the patio area using stakes and string.
Excavate: Remove any grass, plants, or debris from the area. Excavate to a depth of about 6-8 inches.
Lay the Base: Fill the excavated area with a layer of gravel or crushed stone. Compact it thoroughly to create a stable base.
Installing the Stones
Lay Sand or Stone Dust: Spread a 2-inch layer of sand or stone dust over the base. This will help level the stones and provide a firm setting.
Place the Stones: Start laying the stones from one corner, working your way out. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap each stone into place.
Fill the Joints: Once all stones are laid, fill the joints with sand or stone dust. Sweep the material into the gaps, then mist with water to help it settle.
Compact and Clean: Compact the patio surface again to ensure stability. Sweep away any excess material and clean the stones as needed.
Maintaining Your Stone Patio
Regular Cleaning
Keep your stone patio looking its best with regular cleaning. Sweep away leaves and debris, and use a mild detergent mixed with water for deeper cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the stones.
Sealing
Sealing your stone patio can help protect it from stains and weather damage. Choose a sealant that is appropriate for your stone type and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Reseal as needed, typically every 2-3 years.
Weed and Moss Control
Prevent weeds and moss from growing between the stones by applying a weed control solution. Regularly inspect the joints and remove any unwanted growth.
Repair and Replacement
If a stone becomes damaged or dislodged, it can be easily replaced. Keep extra stones on hand for quick repairs, and address any issues promptly to maintain the integrity of your patio.
Enhancing Your Garden with a Stone Patio
Creating a Relaxation Area
Design your stone patio to be a tranquil retreat where you can unwind. Add comfortable seating, shade options like umbrellas or pergolas, and accessories such as cushions and throws to create a cozy atmosphere.
Entertainment Space
A stone patio can be an excellent space for entertaining guests. Consider adding features such as an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, or barbecue area. Arrange seating to encourage conversation and make the space inviting for social gatherings.
Connecting Garden Features
Use your stone patio to connect different areas of your garden. Create pathways that lead to various garden features, such as flower beds, vegetable gardens, or water features. This can create a cohesive and harmonious garden design.
Seasonal Decorations
Keep your stone patio fresh and inviting by updating it with seasonal decorations. Use potted plants, lanterns, and outdoor rugs to reflect the changing seasons and add a touch of personal style.

French Style Chateau
Don't forget, there is also a very entertaining video of this location as well!!
youtube
Now let's shift our focus to the main staircase in the oversized front entry hall, it was pretty spectacular…there are also a few images from the second floor as well!!
