Christmas with Rambo headcanons
this one's a little very long and super fluffy. strap in.
Tumblr media
John enjoys the holiday season, focusing more on the meaning and family time rather than the gifts.
He says you don't have to give him gifts, but he'll get you some meaningful presents (you give him presents anyway)
he does give one similar gift to you every year:
it's a small wood-carved animal sculpture that he makes by hand with his knife
for the other gifts, he subtly notices what you show interest in throughout the year and makes a mental note about it.
He likes going for morning walks in the snowy woods, it just makes him feel at peace.
Occasionally you wake up early enough to join him, and you see why he likes it so much
the two of you talk a lot during your walks and John shares stories about his past. And it's not always the trauma, he has some really cool and even fun stories about his travels
he also teaches you about things you see on your walks, like animal tracks and survival methods
one day when you were both out, you saw some deer prints, so you followed them to see a herd, a few close ones raising their heads in your direction as you approached
You were both able to get a little closer and spend some time observing the beautiful creatures, holding hands and leaning on each other, whispering and pointing at things you saw
it's one of your favorite memories with John
That year, the wood animal he made for you was a little doe.
and if you have kids in the future he'll make a little fawn to go with it awwwwww
hear me out: John teaches you to carve wood and one year you give him his own deer carving so now you have a lil deer family that you put on the fireplace mantle
so now it's a family tradition to make little wood animals for each other (kids get in on it too once John teaches them)
On days you don't go with him, he'll wake you up when he comes back with cold kisses on your forehead
sometimes when you take a long time to wake up, he teases you by pressing his freezing fingers along your face
that wakes you up pretty quickly
Also, he always makes sure to have plenty of firewood to keep you warm, even if he has to go chop more in a snowstorm (he only had to once, but it showed you he would sacrifice anything for you)
you even told him not to do it, but nothing on earth could stop that man from providing for you. (he protects you from everything, including the cold)
he's not much of a baker, but if you like it, he decides he likes it too
you guys make hearty meals with anything he hunts (which isn't a lot in the winter), but you also make sweets :))
you guys made a cute, kinda messy gingerbread cabin, along with cute cookies and yummy pies
it's too much for the two of you, so you'll take this opportunity to do some service and take the extras (most of them) to people in town, especially the people who need it
once you brought a pie to an old lady and when John went out to the car to get something, she pulled you aside
"Do you see the way he looks at you?" she asks.
you're not sure how to respond, but she continues before you can try
"He looks at you like you're the only one in the room. His eyes light up!" She exclaims.
and he DOES
Tautman occasionally visits during the holidays, and you all get to spend time together
And if you have kids OH MY GRANDPA TRAUTMAN
Trautman tells stories from his and John's past, the kids hanging onto every word.
John occasionally chimes in, "That's not how I remember it, Sam"
The tough, no-nonsense colonel SPOILS THEM with an arsenal of 'just one more' gifts
they're things like little camo outfits, compasses, toy soldiers, and walkie-talkies (regardless of whether you have boys or girls or both - the man believes in raising strong girls too)
And before you ask, yes, he shows them how to use everything - he turns your living room into a mini boot camp, marching your kids around
he plays a fun game with them where they line up and they're not allowed to laugh while he makes silly comments and noises, and if they laugh he bops their faces with the pillow of doom
"This is no laughing matter, recruits. The fate of the living room depends on your ability to stay serious"
the winner gets an honorary sticker badge
but it actually just turns into a pillow fight, everyone against everyone
John stifles his own laughter seeing this new side of the colonel before swooping in to rescue your youngest, who squealed, grabbing his neck as he picked them up
"Alright kids, give him a break - besides, I think it's time for dinner"
ANYWAY everyone settles down and after dinner you, John, and Trautman sit by the fire, talking with each other and catching up while the kids play in another room
bedtime inevitably rolls around, Trautman heads out, and now you and John get some alone time after all the (fun) chaos of the holiday
"The kids had fun today," you say, wrapping your arms around John
"It's good for them. Good for all of us," he replies softly. "But I swear Trautman has more energy than the kids," he jokes
You stay silent for a minute, enjoying the peace of the moment before breaking the hug to get ready to go to sleep
"Can't wait until next year," John mumbles in your ear as you get settled in bed together
