xs chinese masterpost
source: me ABC, grew up w chinese-speaking family (mando)
note: christy hui comes from hong kong, which iirc speaks canto so some of the pinyin is diff from in-show pronunciation/official spelling + in-show spelling/pronunciation does not use tones so its p hard to be 100% sure but here's my best guesses. also my phone cant make the 1st or 3rd tone so itll be represented äëïöü and âêîôû respectively
xiaolin: 小林 (xiâolín) - actual martial art is called shàolín 少林, so the first character is most likely swapped out for the character for "small"
shen gong wu: 神功物 (shéngöng wù) - literally, "miraculous objects"
dashi: 大师 (dàshï) - literally, "grand master" (so like how master shifu from kung fu panda is "master master," grand master dashi is "grand master grand master")
wuya: 乌鸦 (wüyä) - "crow" (you probably already knew this one)
fung: 丰 (fëng) - "abundant/plentiful"/common surname (quick note, east asian cultures put the surname first so it's v likely he just goes by his surname. fung is the canto pinyin from what i can tell bc it literally doesnt exist in mando pinyin, plus im p sure closeups show that character on his medallion sometimes)
shen yi bu: 伸一步 (shën yíbù) - "extend (by) a step" - so like, "extend the showdown by a step by wagering two wu at a time"
lao mang lone: 老命龙 (lâo mìng lóng) - "long life dragon" - this one is harder bc i have no idea where the official spelling came from but in-show it's always pronounced lao ming long, so that's what i always assumed it meant...long life dragon...
wudai/shoku: frick man, idk. my best guess for wudai is like, 五带 wûdài (fifth belt)? i can't think of any specifically good fits. shoku looks japanese though so dont ask me about that
guan: 观 (guän) - "to observe" but more importantly, my theory re: guan is that he's a boddhisatva and specificaly named/modeled after guanyin, thus, the guan from guanyin's name 观音
#xiaolin showdown#elsh says#anyway since there's no in-show chinese and the official spellings are kind of...weird...#i could be totally off the mark#and since there's no tones i could totally be even more off the mark#for example dashi's name#is homophonous with like 3000 things#most noticeably#大屎#big shit#grand master large poop#me and my sister had a giggle about that back in the day#so yeah if you have a diff hc or have a diff combo of characters ur probably just as valid as me#this is also pretty fun for kung fu panda btw like po's name is literally 'chubby/fat'#and tai lung is probably literally named#(something) dragon#eh#anyway#long post

Beginner’s housing for a pet pigeon
We can go into the complexities involved in housing multiple pigeons at a later time.
Right now, we’re going to focus primarily on setting up for a single bird who is intended to be a companion animal.
The biggest problem you are going to run into is that the housing commercially available for birds is designed either to display a finch or a parrot.
Finch cages make excellent hospital cages for pigeons, but that is their only useful application.
A Hospital cage needs to be small to discourage the bird from moving around too much and doing anything other than eating and drinking, so that their recovery, be that from disease or injury, can progress with as few delays as possible.
A healthy bird cannot tolerate this degree of confinement for long.
Parrot cages are huge and expensive, but too narrow for a pigeon to be physically able to use.
The bare minimum requirements for any cage a pigeon will be housed in for more than an hour a day is that it be two inches wider than the full wingspan of the bird at the narrowest point, to allow their wings at least an inch of clearance on either side.
They are cliff nesters that don’t roost on branches. Round perches hurt their feet, so they need either flat platforms or square perches.
Pigeons cannot climb the way parrots can. They can only walk or fly, and they cannot comfortably fly if their wings will clip into things like hanging toys or ramps.
So they tend to prefer their enclosure be as uncluttered as possible.
Socialization is best done outside the enclosure, so that’s where most of the toys should be.
Dog kennels set up like this one above are kinder to both the pigeons and the wallets of their care taker than pretty much any indoor bird cage available.
A Labrador sized (usually marketed as a “Large”) kennel will fit bird about homer sized and smaller.
Larger breeds or breeds with longer flight and tail feathers will need a larger size as a base line.
These are very simple to modify.
The nest box is a bunny/ferret corner litter box, about $8-10 at most pet shops. Easy to clean and comfortable.
The perch is a garden stake cut to length, about $5 from the garden center at Walmart or a hardware store like Lowes or home Depot.
Honestly, if I had this to do over, the birds would get a wider, shallower food dish.
Pigeons are ground foragers. It’s easier for them to eat comfortably from a shallow dish than a deep one.
The water dish can be as deep as the pigeon can reach the bottom of.
This is the upper level of a ferret nation Double modified for my first breeding pair of Lucerne waaaay back before my loft was built, when I had a grand total of four breeding pair of pigeons and 16 pairs of Ringneck doves.
This one also has a garden steak cut to fit as a perch.
Their nest box is a large dog bowl full of timothy hay.
Notice that this enclosure has a single hanging bell toy exactly at standing head height for the birds, well out of the way of their wings.
This probably looks unbearably spartan, especially if you come form a parrot back ground.
Remember that pigeons cannot climb and will not fly in a space where their wings may bump into clutter.
The cage for an indoor pet pigeon should serve the same function as the kennel does for an indoor dog:
That is NOT where the dog lives!
At most, it’s where they sleep at night, and where a puppy stays when they can’t be supervised until they’ve learned the house rules.
Pigeons are absolutely smart enough to learn house rules just like a dog or cat.
And pet pigeons are happiest when they have the freedom of motion to exercise, play, and interact with their human flock mates at will.
While they can free fly an entire house, a single bedroom is enough space for most breeds to move around happily.
Pigeon proofing is pretty simple.
They aren’t capable of chewing like parrots, so no need to worry about your electrical chords being damaged and your bird giving them self a nasty shock.
They can’t damage wood or drywall or fabric by chewing.
Pigeons don’t eat plants, but do like the feel of ripping them and will use strips of leaves as nest bedding, so house plants may need to be protected by glass covers.
Things displayed on shelves in the room or rooms the pigeon will have access to need to be heavy enough or well enough wedged in that the bird can’t pull them down if they land awkwardly on them or push them off if they bump into or try to squeeze past them.
Papers need to be stored where they won’t be scattered by the wind that their powerful wings kick up in flight.
Any crevices too high or awkward for you to easily clean need to be blocked some how.
Poop is simple.
The poop of a well fed, healthy pigeon with a good diet should be round and solid enough that it can be easily picked up with a square of toilet paper or a tissue when wet or vacuumed up when dry.
Once you know your bird’s favorite perches, you can make clean up even easier on yourself by laying down puppy pads under them that you can just change out as often as needed.
Once a pigeon has mastered the house rules, you can do away with the cage entirely.
This is the feeding station we set up for Ankhou and Bird-bird.
On the little feed tray for cats were the feeder and waterer with oystershell offered free choice from a dish between them.
Pigeons are one of the very few animals that recognize their reflection in the mirror as a a reflected view of themselves, instead of another bird.
Most like to practice dancing, strutting, their sweeping charge, and bow-cooing in front of mirrors, so those are excellent enrichment for them.
Being cliff nesters, bricks are simply the most comfortable thing for a pigeon to stand on.
Strutting back and forth on the rough surface in front of a mirror will help them keep their claws blunted.
The bricks are holding down a crinkle sack for cats, laid out flat.
Pigeons love noise stims. Particularly crinkly, jingly, or chiming.
The noise it made made dancing in front of the mirror extra fun on the crinkle mat.
The dead keyboard serves a similar function.
This beans box from Walmart full of straw served as Bird-Bird’s nest box.
She laid eggs fairly regularly, and slept in there most of the time.
Ankhou was a man of simple tastes.
This baby doll blanket on the nightstand at my bedside was where he slept at night.
Social bird was social and wanted to be as close as possible to us at all times and involved somehow in everything we did.
Pigeons like to take baths, and our free flying pet liked to be offered the opportunity to take one when we showered, but did not like to actually be in the shower with us.
So we got him a little pyrex casserole dish about as long as he was that stayed on the side of the bathtub and made a habit of filling it for him before we got into the shower.
Anhkou didn’t care much for forage pans or puzzle toys, but many pigeons do and they are very simple to make.
A pan or tray with a few fists full of straw, paper strips, sand, or a mix of all three with a high value treat like Safflower seeds sprinkled in to find mimics the way rock doves would forage for seed in the wild.
Puzzle feeders for pigeons are as simple to make as crumpling a sheet of paper with a few high value seeds inside.
Pigeons love crinkly sounds and tugging on the crumpled paper or blowing it around by flapping at it will reward them with a few spilled seeds and a fun noise.
The little wicker balls for kitties with a jingle bell inside complete the holy trinity of stick-texture, shiny, and jingly, and many pigeons love to kick, peck, and toss them.
They like to pick up and shake and toss bread ties with a small jingle bell fastened to the end.
Bird-Bird’s favorite toy was the bell intended to go on a kittens collar.
She liked to strut around with it holding it by the loop by which it was supposed to fasten and very softly jingling it.
Q-tips with the cotton tips removed and toothpicks with blunted or clipped ends are basically pigeon Legos.
Miniature wind chimes like this little angel and her harp are fun auditory stims too.
If you can swing it (ha!), pigeons enjoy swings, as long as the perch is flat.
Experiment with your birds and see what kind of enrichment they enjoy. ^v^

Abbie Hebein in Fez - Day 1
Inside is where the beauty is in the Medina. The Medina- a labrinth of narrow cobbled streets and alleyways- is both chaotic and mesmerizing. Each exterior has the same yellow brick and stucco facade. Inside is a surprise of elaborate decoration.
Badiaa, a mother of two, was my tour guide for the morning. To start, she brought me to a madrasa, a university for the study of the Koran. Now vacant, visitors can wander through the maze of rooms once reserved for dedicated students which circle a grand courtyard. We were the first to arrive and it was calm and meditative until larger groups began to join.
For the rest of the afternoon, we visited shops for rugs, fabric and leather. Each place revealed a unique interior full of patterns-in colored tile, intricately carved wood and plaster- and often a winding narrow staircase to a rooftop. The rooftops of Fez reveal the dense layers of the Medina as well as beyond to the old City and the surrounding hills. Every rooftop has several satellite dishes, all looking west- like entranced globes.
At lunch, an hour when students come home from school and fill the tiny streets with colored backpacks, we shared a disc of fresh warm bread and made our way to the tanneries- where animal skins are soaked in pigeon poop (for softness) and then washed and dyed in vates colored orange by saffron and other natural pigments. You are given mint leaves to ward off the pungent smell of the process.
Most of the tour had a commercial bent. At each stop, Badiaa introduced me to the vendor who took me through the process of making, often highlighting the natural elements and degree of handcraft, and then brought out rugs or fabric or leather goods to display for my purchase. I disappointed each shop save for a vendor of argan oil where I overpaid for shampoo (something I forgot to pack).
I rested for awhile at my apartment (riad) before daring myself to wander the Medina solo and without the buffer of a local. Certainly a different experience and one that I had built up in my mind from all the warnings I received before traveling, and from nearly everyone I have met here about being alone, specifically as a woman. My destination was the main gate to the Medina (Bab boujloud or blue gate) where I was told I could buy a sim card. There are small successes that feel o so victorious when traveling alone and this was one of them- navigating to and from my Fes home with gathered confidence.
In the evening, I set out to Cafe Clock, an international and local hub for cultural events. Mondays are for storytelling. Two men shared several folktales passed down to them from a revered storyteller- each with an essential moral- and translated to English to bring to a wider audience. It was an intimate crowd- only a few tables listened in and participated so I was able to speak with the man who leads the event afterwards to learn more. He had tested the audience early with a question about expected gender roles in the stories and whether they were still true. They are to a large degree in Morocco. This led to more conversation- mostly about education. In Morocco, you can study for free through a master's degree. He had studied English and cultural studies but felt the only way of making a living was to teach or to go into tourism. We talked more about progressive and popular education and the difficulty of modeling student centered learning in a traditional system. He asked how it was traveling alone - a question that usually makes me guarded because there is a narrative of danger and warning- but he asked because he had never traveled alone and was hoping to go to Istanbul in the Spring and wanted advice.
Something I am thinking about today is the push-pull of being guarded (safe) and being open (vulnerable)- and the things we do to activate either mode. A novel or sketchbook allows me to avoid conversation and linger at a cafe table longer. Today, in the spirit of openness, I resisted resorting to journaling at the cafe and chatted with the waiter for awhile (open). Afterwards he asked if I'd like to get coffee after his shift. Which tettered the scale between guarded and open. How do we decide to trust?

Whether we like to believe it or not, we are all masters at something. Some are talented at more grand and majestic things like painting, while others at more simple things like handling hamsters. While handling hamsters may not seem to require much work, there is a process to everything, and this would be no exception. I want to write this essay for people who know nothing about raising a hamster, but are willing to learn. If you have no current intent to get a hamster, perhaps you should consider doing so. Giving time to a hamster instead of a dog or cat has many benefits. Hamsters need less room to live and take up less of your time. Hamster owners do not have to worry about pee stains, nor will they have to think about picking up stinky dog poop. Hamsters are very easy to maintain but are also very interactive pets. In no time, you will begin to notice that the hamster most certainly has a mind of its own. It will blossom into an inevitable character and will begin to develop a strong connection to its owner.
There are only four steps to proper hamster upbringing. This is my approach of bringing up the perfect hamster. It is a formula of love which has worked for me throughout the years, and with many little critters.
The first step is that these little guys are to be raised in a loving and peaceful environment. The environment should be a dimly lighted room, the one in which to keep the hamster’s cage, of course! It should always be kept at room temperature and must not have extremely loud noises such as children screaming or loud dogs barking. This is for many reasons. You should always remember the size of hamsters. Obviously, being so small, they have a heightened sense of smell, light, and sound. Be considerate of these surroundings and you will have no problems with your hamster feeling free from danger and trusting towards you.
The next step is getting you hamster the perfect home! You will need an adequate sized habitat in relation to your hamster’s proportions. They do not need a large amount of room, just enough for them to run around and play. However, there are many cages to choose from, and if you have the money to obtain a little extra space, that will not hurt. There are one-story cages, two-story cages and even lit up cages! Two-story cages will allow your hamster to run up and down as well as side to side! There are also cages which have tubes for you to connect to other cages and give them multiple homes! Some more objects you must include inside your little critter’s house are a wheel and water bottle. The wheel should be big enough for your hamster to comfortably get his daily exercise. The water bottle should be reachable and refilled every time your hamster finishes his dose. There should also be some toys and a small house for them to hide in when they feel like doing so. Chewing toys are very good for your hamster’s teeth since they never stop growing. Gnawing on wood or straw prevents overgrowth. The small house your hamster will need is for when he feels threatened. In the case of dogs barking or fireworks he can just hide under his little toy house and feel safe. The bedding should consist of only paper. Be careful to avoid pine bedding as it may be poisonous to your hamster.
Next, your hamster must be tamed if you plan on holding him and spending quality time without getting tiny bites on your hands every time you do so. This can be achieved in many ways, but I will tell you the way I have done it for four years and it has worked great every time. You grab toilet paper (which is not scented) and rub it on your skin; then, you place the paper in your hamster’s cage. By doing so he will get accustomed to your scent and the next time you hold him, voila no teeth mark! Also, imagine you are living in another animal’s territory and confined to life in four walls in, what is in the end, a limited space. You will want to be taken out, right? Something important to note is that a hamster, as small as it is, can be let out to explore, but this can only be accomplished if it is tamed, or else it will run away, and very fast at that. Therefore, you must slowly let your hamster gain your respect and trust. Do so by handling him at least twice a day for at least ten minutes each time. Believe me that in no time he will be the one coming to you once he catches your scent.
Finally, we have reached the fourth step! Your hamster must be kept healthy and content. Keep in mind that the food you give your hamster will show outwardly, so if you want a soft, furry, cheeky looking hamster you will make sure to get him nutritious food. A hamster’s diet consists mainly of dry corn, seeds and fiber. If you are feeding the little critter right, daily, a little treat from time to time will not hurt him. What can be considered a treat? Well a variety of delicacies. From a small piece of juicy nectarine to a pecan. They enjoy fresh tangy mango slices and they absolutely adore red juicy strawberries. Now, since all these fruits are very high in sugar, you have got to keep the treats to occasion and in only small amounts. Meaning, you should be able to tell if the hamster’s treat is around the same size as both their little paws. You should, however, stay away from very watery fruits which could give them wet tail, a very deadly form of diarrhea. Watermelon is one of those watery fruits which a lot of people believe is safe, but it is very dangerous, as it will lead to wet tail. Also avoid giving your hamster apple seeds and almonds as they contain cyanide in amounts enough to kill your hamster.
I hope that by following these four steps you will find in no time a tiny friend and confidant. You will gain many new experiences from opening yourself to a different pet and you will cherish those memories forever!

I’m no scientist. I’m no Master Gardener. I’m just a girl who wants a nice garden and good vegetables. It’s been a bit of a haul from clay-based dirt to the rich, healthy soil that my plants now enjoy.
I live in a region where the ground is hard clay. Grass and weeds do fine, but flowers and vegetables have a rather rough time of it, due largely to the fact that the ground drinks up or runs off every drop of water that God or I put on it. Of course, one must learn this (as all things) the hard way.
My first year with my garden involved removing the grass from a section of yard, putting in some pre-started plants, and hoping for the best. The best is not what I got. In fact, I was lucky to harvest anything that first year. The tomatoes were small, the onions never did come “up”, the carrots were a joke that no one was laughing about.
Year 2…I had read an article in Mother Earth News that detailed how to grow a garden in poor soil. I felt that they’d written it for me! It described buying 25 twenty pound bags of topsoil, and laying them right next to each other on the ground of the garden area with a couple of walk ways between some rows. Then, one cuts a rectangular opening in the tops of the bags large enough to expose most of the dirt, but leaving the edges intact to hold the soil in the bag. One pokes many holes through the soil and bottom of the bag to allow for drainage and root growth. Then, just plant “non-root-type” vegetables, and they should grow nicely due to the quality of the potting or top soil in the bag. At the end of the season, just dump it all onto the garden area and till it under in spring. Hmmm….
O.k., so that was year 2, I learned that the above, while a great deterrent to weeds -due to the plastic covering most of the area- was also EXTREMELY needy when it came to water, and carrots, potatoes, and beets were out of the question due to the lack of depth of the “good ground”, but most things did well. My tomatoes were not huge, but did grow. My peppers, onions, and herbs did well. I learned how to water that year, and bought 150′ of hose and a sprinkler and ran it every 3 days.
So, year 3…. Over the winter, after the “soil bag year”, living on a horse farm, I decided that a great addition to the garden would be fresh horse manure. I’d seen commercial farmers doing the same on a grand scale with cow, horse, pig, chicken excrements, and it sounded like a great way to get nutrients into my clay ground. Also, if I put in the moldy hay flakes, that’d add drainage. $100 worth of topsoil delivered, and 500 Super Georgia Redworms, and I should have an incredible base for my beloved tomato plants. I asked the neighbor’s dad, a retired farmer (such as that’s possible) to come over with his big tractor and tiller, and till it under in May.
When he was done, I took my precious little seeds and my precious little plants, and put them in my new, improved garden. I put T-posts in the corners and surrounded it with chicken wire to keep the chickens out.
And everything GREW!!Including, but certainly not limited to, the weeds. My major mistake that year, which has haunted me since, was the moldy hay. A perennial grass, it has refused to die or remain down regardless of hours and days spent pulling or spraying it. It’s been 5 years since I did that, and I’m still pulling weeds. Mostly “hay type” grasses. Yeah.
Now-a-days I use a biodegradable top cover, and cut holes in the places that I want my plants. The learning curve on this one was to make the holes big enough to allow lots of rain or well water in. Too small of a hole, and the soil (which is no longer clay after 5 years of manure additions) dries out too fast. Pulling a few weeds around the bases of the plants can be done in a few hours per week, instead of the uncountable numbers of hours without the soil covering.I had been using plastic, but when the biodegradable stuff was brought to my attention, it sounded like a more environmentally healthy idea.
The Super Georgia Redworms from 7 years ago, have procreated to the extent that I now find worm casings over the 4 acres surrounding the garden. They eat bad stuff and poop out good stuff. An inexpensive way to aerate and feed the ground.
These are the few things that I’ve learned over the years, and so I thought I’d pass them on so that now you know, too. I have such an abundance of produce that I donate it, can it, and give it away every summer. Ah yes, pass on the blessings….it feels great!
Miss Holly, how does your garden grow?
Quite well, thank you.
Gardening from the Ground Up I'm no scientist. I'm no Master Gardener. I'm just a girl who wants a nice garden and good vegetables.
