Personas
Tumblr media
Most of us are out here doing the best we can on the social media front. There are, however, a few Facebook and Instagram offenders (myself included) whose online antics drive me to drink*. They are as follows:
The “I love my husband” poster - Nine out of every 10 photos are of me and my husband, who is very gay, doing something absolutely adorable like apple picking or pretending he’s not gay.
The “My children are my life” poster - I didn’t have three kids by 30 not to post about them, so buckle up and enjoy this carousel of images of my children smeared in an unknown goop at some shit kid’s birthday party.
The “I travel a lot for work, but it’s cool because I get to really see the world” poster - Me in front of the Eiffel Tower after a three-hour work meeting. Me by the Cloud Gate statue right before the big client presentation. Life is an adventure. Travel is life. I wish I was dead.
The “I fly to exotic locations exclusively to post about it on Instagram” poster - I factor in “gramability” before roping in my friends (attractive ones only, thank you) to book a flight to St. Creliz for a long girls’ weekend. Is St. Creliz an actual place? Not technically — I basically discovered it. Am I in major credit card debt? Yes. Will my photos get the likes I crave? They fucking better or you can bet my dad’s frequent flyer miles I will delete this vacation album.
The “So all over the place that you wonder if I’m doing alright” poster** - I post when the mood strikes and it could be of anything: Roadkill — me in a facemask — my dog in a facemask — a throwback to when I dressed like a lady Sasquatch to scare the neighbors — my mom on her birthday (Love you, Mama!). The photo quality varies from high resolution to Rorschach Test. There is no consistency in my behavior on or offline.
The “I’m basically an influencer’s influencer” poster - I’m always at the hottest hip new restaurant opening. I know the owner because I dated him one summer. He was horrible to me, but HE OWNS A RESTAURANT NOW, so let’s let bygones be bygones. I pose in lots of photos at his new Euro-Arctic fusion spot smiling and twirling because I am wild and young and fun and free. When I post I make sure to tag the restaurant, the patrons, the vendors, and the insurance company. I have an eating disorder.
The “How am I a lawyer?” poster - I am and have always been a bit of a dumbdumb. I not only believe St. Creliz is real, I’m convinced that I got a stick and poke tattoo with my buddy the last time I was there. It’s of the Philadelphia Eagle’s logo and it’s on my ass. How the frick did I pass the bar exam? Because life works in mysterious ways. And, GO BIRDS, that’s why.
The “Workin on my fitness” poster - I am fit and need you to know just how much. Will you hold my Swell bottle while I take a selfie after my Soulcycle session? (#swelllife #soulcycleoflife #imonsteroids) Oh, make sure to follow my YouTube channel because I’ll be live streaming my run of the New York City Marathon. If you can dream it, you can do it! And if you can’t dream it, you are fat!
*Yes, you can drive yourself to drink with your own antics.
**Don’t worry, I’m fine! All is well! Nothing to see here!

Disco Shrine – Alright
Tumblr media
Hey, guys.
New music this week from a Liner Notes fave and interviewee. On Tuesday, Disco Shrine released a video for her single, “Alright.” Check it out.
youtube
In the press release for the video, DS confides:
“When I first started in music a lot of men would tell me how I should sound, what I should look like, what was wrong, and what was right. They would make me feel inferior. This video is the embodiment of me finding that power and taking it back. It’s proof that girls can appreciate a cliché without being one.”
The new clip features “an all-female cast of badass women reading magazines, playing Nintendo, snapping polaroids, chewing bubble gum in a hyper-girly and very ‘gramable dream pop sleepover. They create choreographed dance sequences, skate through clouds, and have dance offs – all while giving a middle finger attitude. Instead of rejecting the stereotype, they’re taking it back and having fun while doing it.” DS says that, here, she’s going “next level Persian Barbie.
According to DS,
“This video first came about when the director and overall badass Nicole Lipp (@flowerhitsthebigtime) first heard Alright. Nicole loved the song and felt really inspired so we started scheming together. We wanted the video to be an ode to y2k nostalgia with an all-female cast of badass babes. We partnered with the super talented Marti Hoyos (@martihoyos) to edit, and he helped bring it all to life.”
The track is super bright – strong lyrics, stronger vocals, and an unmistakable message of self belief. It’s a collaboration between DS and “Pop-tronic Futurist and Producer” UNBLOOM. Here’s DS on the track and the collab:
“This is the ultimate girl power song. It’s saying even though you’re out to make me feel inferior, F.U. I’m gonna make it to the top because I know nothing can hold me down – ‘I’m Alright’ no matter what obstacles I face. This one is a lot more dancey and fun. The lyrics really say it all. It’s all about empowerment and taking back your power.
UNBLOOM reached out to me after hearing my music on Soundcloud. I recorded the stems in LA, and UNBLOOM worked on the production in Canada. We never met in person. It really goes to show how music can bring people together.”
UNBLOOM calls the track “an anthem that promotes personal empowerment and disrupts toxic masculinity.” He wrote music in late 2017/early 2018. At that time, he found DS. According to UNBLOOM,
“I was completely floored by her persona and lyricism. When she sent me her idea for ‘Alright,’ the song immediately became so much more – it was like ‘Yes! This is what the song deserved, this is what it needed to be.’ The song transcended cliché narratives and actually stood for something. I have friends in the industry that identify as femme or associate with the LGBTQ+ community. To hear Jess’ lyrics empower people of any background and give them a song to rally around made me so happy.”
You can listen to the track in a couple of ways: DS has it on Spotify, and UNBLOOM has it on Soundcloud.
If you’re in LA, the video release party on October 3.

from @lisa_buchanan — @downtowndartmouth just got more ‘gramable with the reveal of the new neon lights mural at Portland & Victoria. The lights are actually LEDs, but they really have a look of neon, and the painted aspect of the mural brightens things up during the day. Lots of people and dogs turned up for the reveal party. I love how Dartmouth folks show up for stuff like this and how our neighbourhood embraces public art. #publicart #neonmural #downtowndartmouth https://ift.tt/2Z69JeN

International Costumes - Toddler Matador Costume
Theme Halloween Costumes
Spanish Costumes
Is your little one a bit of a proverbial bull in a china shop? Maybe teaching him to tame his inner animal will help set him straight for at least a week or two. Or…maybe not!But even if that grand plan doesn’t work, your little guy deserves a great and unique costume for trick-or-treating! This toddler matador costume is so seriously cute that he’ll be doted on by spectators near and far and all across the neighborhood. He may even be able to train the family dog to chase this included intricate red cape, with its two rows of gold ball fringe. Side note: did you know that bulls are colorblind and that it really doesn’t matter what color a matador’s cape is? Amazing, right! The cape is red primarily for show–for the audience; the bull can’t tell the difference! What the animal reacts to is the movement of the cape, not the color. Now that we’ve set the record straight there, we can go back to fawning over this costume’s finery, from its gray brocade bolero jacket to its braid-adorned poplin pants. The black foam Montera-style hat will make him instantly ‘gramable, so you can share your little guy’s shining moment with friends all the way in Spain, if you want! Just remember, a good matador becomes one with the mind of the animal; maybe you can get your little torero to mind meld with his inner beast and pick up his room before he heads out for the candy-fest. We said “maybe.”

Nahita Effortlessly Blends the Brutal and the Serene
Tumblr media
The Eater Award winner for Design of the Year boasts a truly singular space
It’s hard to imagine a space once defined by brutalist concrete columns and soaring ceilings could ever feel warm or organic. But the folks behind Nahita in Back Bay managed to transform the space at 100 Arlington St. — formerly home to Liquid Art House — from its old form (cold and cavernous) into one that feels like its diners are stepping into a natural landscape that just so happens to boast a bar and a dining room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The abundance of greenery helps. Adorable little shrubs sit at the center of each table, and the many lush ferns growing throughout the restaurant conjure a tropical rainforest. When framed against and only against one of the many concrete columns, an eerie (but somehow pleasing) sense of post-apocalypse creeps to mind. The deliciously plated raw fish dishes do well to subvert that, though.
“The goal for us is to allow people to step into something they haven’t seen before in Boston,” said Rob Saunders, Nahita’s general manager. “Something that’s comfortable and cozy, but also eye-opening. There’s no better moment than seeing someone experience that jaw-dropping moment — the phone comes out, and they start taking an Instagram photo or making a Snapchat post.”
Nahita is not short on ‘gramable scenery. The back wall is adorned with a psychedelic mural depicting fantastical beasts (a hybrid turkey-raptor) living among more readily recognizable ones (zebras, humans), and there are trellises hung above the bar and lounge, around which grow more greenery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nahita opened in September 2018, and is owned and operated by an international restaurant group called Dream (stylized as d.ream) based out of Istanbul, Turkey. (Dream is also behind Salt Bae’s restaurants.) Nahita was inspired by one of Dream’s other restaurants, Fenix, which has two locations in Turkey. And indeed, Nahita has a secret bar, called Fenix, open by special invitation or rentable for private events.
The space was designed by Zeynep Fadıllıoglu Design, the same firm that worked on Dream’s Fenix properties.
Nahita focuses on Japanese-tinged Peruvian food known as “nikkei,” and offers various raw fish dishes (sashimi, tiraditos, ceviche), along with tacos served on house-made corn tortillas made with Oaxacan heirloom corn, and other snacks like shishito peppers and elote.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Various sashimi (top), tuna tartare (bottom left), and duck tacos (bottom right)
The beautiful, simple plating and the stunning design choices — in spite of the concrete, in spite of the all that space created by those soaring ceilings — combine to form a coherent aesthetic.
“You walk in and you have these beautiful high ceilings, almost cathedral like,” said Saunders. “But the restaurant also has an element that makes you feel like you’re outside, and in a space that is majestic and pure. It allows people to get comfortable while they’re dining.”
Tumblr media
About those high ceilings — and those plants!
Nahita’s sheer size means that diners can have several experiences, depending on where they choose to sit. Saunders said that’s part of the allure.
“You can enjoy the fine dining elements, but we also have a lounge space — people can come in and enjoy a cocktail at the bar, or sit down and enjoy dinner. You can come in five, six, seven times and have five, six, seven experiences.”
This story part of a series of features highlighting the 2018 Eater Awards winners. Stay tuned for the next installment, and look back at a feature on last year’s Design of the Year winner, Lolita, here.

This all comes back to the “Can I take a picture of your hair 😩🥵😻😳” scenario bc they always want It to look gramable which makes hair feel horrible and I just want to be clean
My hairdresser be like parts my hair too far and on the wrong side and also puts quick dry spray in it that leaves a sticky residue forcing me to once again wet my hair when I get home to get it out and fix the style
