children are the future of our societies therefore, maternal and child health is very important.

Have you ever thought about why maternal and child health is so important in our society? When I thought about it, I ended up going back to the saying that says “children are the future of each and every community” different communities form 1 society therefore children are the future of our societies. In order for children to be our future their mothers need to be able to properly raise them within the society. With that said we need to realize the importance of the health of the mother as well. To elaborate on this point, almost everyone would agree with me if I say, “a healthy and happy child needs a healthy and happy mother”, although the society  plays a role in raising each and every child in many different ways it’s also important for the society to ensure that the mothers are also healthy because the health and happiness of every child is strongly linked to the health and happiness of the mother.

According to WHO (2001) Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Each and every stage is important, and it should be a positive and joyful experience for both the mother and child. But if we take a look at our societies mostly in the developing countries, the mothers are unlikely to have a positive experience that ensures full potential health and well being for their babies and for themselves. With that said, the future of our societies is compromised by that because of these non-positive experiences during this phase. These non-positive experiences are usually a result of many factors such as lack knowledge, inability to access the correct services, not having enough social support, poor socio-economic backgrounds and more the list goes on and on. I believe that most of our societies are conditioned to believe that help concerning our health issues can only be received in health care facilities which are usually hard to access in developing countries, but according to (Rosato et al., 2008)   “Health is not the responsibility of the health sector alone but it is also affected by development activities in other sectors such as communities and societies”. I strongly agree with  (Rosato et al., 2008) because as an aspiring occupational therapist I believe that in order for the society to have a better and greater future they need to see the importance of working together to ensure health for new young members of the society and mothers.  Development of self-reliance and social awareness in societies is very important as it is the key factor in improving maternal and child health to ensure a bright and better future for the entire society.

I’m currently rendering occupational therapy services at Inanda community. What I noticed is that the community has a lot of children with learning difficulties, this might be due complications during the maternal phase that negatively affected the mothers or the children (remember that the health of the child is linked to the health of the mother). This ongoing problem in this community might be a result of lack of knowledge or inability to access the correct services at an earlier stage to ensure that the children receive intervention in order for them to be able to carry on with education and succeed in the near future which would also be an achievement for the entire community as well. As  an aspiring occupational therapist working at Inanda community, I believe that community-based intervention combined with services rendered by the health care system will help to prevent the increasing numbers of children with learning difficulties which also affects the mothers because of the whole stigma of having a child that’s not coping at school. According to Ronsmans et.al (2010), providing community-based intervention and care is important especially in the low resourced communities, I agree with this because community based interventions will not be concerned with advanced medical technology but rather with practical, applied, tried and tested health care procedures to ensure maternal and child health at Inanda. This will not only assist with the learning difficulty problem, but it will also assist in other components such as providing social support to these mothers, providing knowledge about different complications during maternal phase and providing knowledge of how to deal with such complications faced during the maternal phase.

 I believe that this could be done by Concentrating on encouraging and training community care givers about the maternal phase, this could be done by the occupational therapists and the nurses that work at the Inanda Seminary clinic.  If the mothers are provided with enough information and practical knowledge a lot of challenges experienced by children and themselves as well would decrease.  I believe that Knowledge automatically creates desired changes in behavior therefore, training the community care givers and other community facilitators will help to engage mothers  and young adults in educational and health promoting activities which will empower community knowledge and encourage the community to improve their health. In that way the children, mothers and the entire community stand a chance to fix the future of the community, they stand a chance to improve their community in many ways.

Giving  societies appropriate knowledge and training will help them to be more aware of problems experienced by the entire society, that is the key that can be used to solve so many problems and challenges faced by mothers and their children in the maternal phase which will lead to a better and improved society in the future. Lastly, we should always remember that “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself." – Henry Ford”
