Andrew Garfield's search for ultimate philosophy of his life

Living the last year in Andrew's skin would be both - fulfilling and terrifying. Golden Globe win, an Emmy nomination, re-playing SpiderMan - Andrew is speaking about the freedom he feels while choosing his next projects. Not excluding the new experience, new life he'd been living since last year.

Interviewer: I cannot not start this conversation with congratulating you.

Andrew: (blushing) Oh, thank you very much. Thank you.

I: You won a Golden Globe for your portrayal of Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick...Boom!

A: Yeah. Super cool. Yes. It- you know how it can be with awards. I don't say I don't like them. It's pleasing to be recognised by the critics. But (scratching his beard) with this film it never was made for awards. Or I've never treated it like it. The storytelling of Jonathan's life, genius and impeccable talent was what I wanted to present as genuinely as it could be possible. Showing young and older people that this man did so much for theatre, for music, for people.

I: You definitely brought him to life.

A: That's- that's what I wanted. Thank you for acknowledging my pains.

I: Of course. I'd never deny someone's genius in acting.

A: No, no. Please no. I have this problem with that word. Genius is something that remarkable people could be blessed with. People making difference in the world, changing it for the better. No genius in my head. But like all words and feelings there is no universal meaning to them. So, in your understanding of the word: thank you.

I: You said about changing the world, but last year your world changed completely.

A: (smiling) Yes. Yes, it did.

I: You're a married man.

A: I am. I am married to the most delicate, understanding, caring, mesmerising woman I've ever met. I don't think my or your lifetime would be enough for me to express how much this woman changed my life. The- the absolute love I feel is one of the greatest feelings I've experienced. Such an eternal feeling.

I: It's not the only change, is it?

A: (laughs, while blushing) No.

I: Last year you welcomed your daughter in the world. You're a dad!

A: Yes! I finally can shamelessly make those ludicrous jokes. Even if not funny it's a dad joke.

I: How's that? Being a father?

A: Don't make me start. (laughs) At home, I have two rays of sunshine, beaming at me, making me absolutely awestruck. It's not helping when the little one is the picture of her mother - mind-bogglingly precious. It's- it's funny because my brother has kids. And whenever he spoke about how much he loved, appreciated and just - just valued them and his wife, I couldn't comprehend that. Love was always such a beautiful but mysterious feeling for me, somehow uncomprehending. And then YN came into my life. And little L was born. Those feelings just started burning my heart. My whole body. I still can't understand it. But it's so magical. You're really ready to do anything for that little human.

I: How are all the milestones?

A: Exciting. (tears up) Fuck. See? Oh God. Being so full of that love is- oh screw it. I'm done. (laughs)

I: What are your plans?

A: There's not many of them. We're trying to live the moment with YN, appreciate the joy that Universe gave us - little Lynn. We're living from one milestone to the other. From her first smile, through first prattle, first solo sitting situation to those attempts of the first word. I'm not the youngest, the big 40 is waiting around the corner, and experiencing those joys with my love is, I think, the essence of my existence.

I: Do you think without that you'd be lost?

I: Fullfilled.

A: I don't know. Maybe. Probably. It's a big thing to derive your happiness from other people, even if it's your absolute partner and child. It's dangerous. (Andrew thinks for a moment.) That's why I surf. It clears my mind, brings me my own, autarcik joy. It's something that is only mine. YN isn't a fan of surfing, but accepts and supports my endeavours. So to answer your question, without them my existence wouldn't feel pure. They make me complete.

A: Yes. It's strange getting to know in your late 30s that you lack so much. That your life could be so different if you met that on person earlier or not at all. There always was that perpetual search in me, for meaning of life, for love, for - you know - answers. Why, why why. There still is that search, but now I can just leave one room and go look for my wife and talk to her about it, search together. Or I can find my daughter, hug her and speak to her, sing. And even though she, for now, only can be a blabbery little human, the search is united.

I: What do you wish for now, in your life?

A: Like a dad would say, health. (laughs) My dad has so fun with calling me out on sounding just like him. I do. I do sound just like him. That's what fathers do apparently.

Here at GQ, we first met Chalamet six years ago, just as the rest of the world was also discovering it had developed a thirst that could only be quenched by this strange new creature—the sensitive and beguiling mop-haired kid who played Elio in Call Me by Your Name. Women wanted him…and wanted to be him. Men, the same. It was confusing and awesome; a breakout moment of a kind we haven’t seen since DiCaprio, or maybe more like Brando and Dean.

For that first cover, we photographed Chalamet during a January snowstorm (one so severe it became known as a “bomb cyclone”) in a decrepit old mansion just outside of New York City. When Chalamet’s lips started turning blue as he shivered for Ryan McGinley’s camera in a freezing-cold bathtub wearing only spring’s best lightweight, stone-colored double denim, I remember telling myself: Don’t kill Timothée Chalamet. The world will never forgive you. He survived. He thrived. He lost the Oscar. He won our hearts.

In 2020, in the depths of the pandemic, we returned to Chalamet. He was hiding out in a cabin in Woodstock. He had finished shooting Dune: Part One and was now downshifting, immersing himself in the life and catalog of Bob Dylan. With Dan, Timmy unpacked his complicated thoughts, feelings, fears, and aspirations duringa very transitional moment when he’d become extremely globally famous in a neck-snappingly short period of time. Meanwhile, Timmy and photographer Renell Medrano tripped around Woodstock, making pictures by fields, campfires, and creeks.

And now, part three. I won’t step on Dan’s story by prefacing it in any way, other than to say this: To read these three pieces together is to map the complex mental and emotional landscape of an era-defining figure as he evolves—a person who is, at once, both just like you and me and not at all like you and me. He’s universal and he’s singular. It’s hard to explain, but of course you know what I mean because this is exactly his appeal.

When I first read the manuscript of Dan’s piece I remember thinking, If only every person on earth got to have their story told in such a rich, profound, ennobling way. Since that is not possible, we get to have our stories told vicariously through one portal: Timmy.

It has been said that a trilogy is the perfect way to articulate the full arc of a character. But Chalamet’s career is just getting going, and so are we. I like to think of this as Book I, Chapter III. If all goes well, in just a few short years, it’ll be time to start writing Book II. Timothée, for his part, has already started living it.

On January 13, the musician stole the show at the Gucci runway presentation at Milan Fashion Week in a black and red plaid suit paired with a chic yet edgy boot.

Before his arrival, Gucci proclaimed that Kai had made his way to the show on Twitter, announcing his arrival in almost royal fashion. "Global Brand Ambassador #KAI has arrived at the men's #GucciFW23 fashion show," the brand wrote.

The K-Pop star donned a black Gucci suit with red plaid detailing and gold buttons, layered over a pastel blue shirt fastened with a classic slim black tie.

Kai grounded the suit with a pair of chunky square-toe motorcycle boots and skipped other accessories.

Kai was seated in the front row for the show, posing for pics next to all sorts of celebrities, including Francois-Henri Pinault, the chairman and CEO of Kering, the luxury group that manages Gucci.

He was also snapped next to actor Desmond Tan, who looked equally chic in a gray suit with flared pants layered over a similar light blue shirt. Desmond styled his Gucci look with a sleek ivory Gucci bag that we are definitely coveting. Another celeb encounter? Wednesday star Percy Hynes White, who jet-setted from Los Angeles after attending the Golden Globes 2023 with Jenna Ortega earlier in the week. Talk about a star-studded event.

Kai's style influence should come as no surprise since fashion is a huge part of the star's identity. He has worked with Gucci since 2019, even releasing his first capsule collection with the brand in 2021. The singer was named one of Lyst's Style Icons in 2021. He also made GQ's Best Dressed Men of 2020 list.

Also in 2021, Kai served as Global Fashion Ambassador for Seoul Fashion Week and even took walking classes for the runway portion. "I use clothes to express myself," he shared at the time. "I used to only think about how to sing or how to dance, but now that I've been a singer for ten years, I came to think about how to express myself as an artist."

A quick call about leather fits and Legolas' dad with Lee Pace

“Times have changed a bit, and the world recognises that there's not just one kind of man out there.”

Lee Pace, who is currently on the press tour for the second series of the Apple TV galactic epic Foundation, loves to get dressed up. The guy with the devastatingly good ‘brows is known for having fun with his clothes. We recently saw The Hobbit alum wear an armour-like leather tabard under a suit while promoting the upcoming miniseries in London, and not long before, the 6’5 actor showed off his calves in a pleated skirt in a GQ from 2020. “I'm still learning though,” Pace, who's midway through getting changed, says via Zoom from the Intercontinental hotel in Paris ahead of the Thom Browne haute couture show. “I don't really know the boundaries of getting dressed, or if there even are any. That leather look last week just felt sexy. I felt sexy.”

44-year-old Pace, who was raised Catholic, hasn't always felt this comfortable getting wavy with his wardrobe. “When I was younger, you definitely felt like men were prescribed a certain way of dressing and you didn't really deviate from the example sets,” he says. “Times have changed a bit since then, you know, and the world recognises that there's not just one kind of man out there.” Pace admits that when he was filming his breakthrough show Pushing Daisies back in the early '00s, there was not a chance that he'd be dressing the way he does now. “I don't think that I would have felt comfortable during that time of my life.”

Pace finds that, as he's now older, he's stopped caring so much about what people think about his appearance. “I just can't take anything too seriously, you know?" he says. "I used to think if I didn't adhere or look respectable then I'd be kicked out of whatever I was at. But I've been here a while now, doing this acting thing, and I'm not going anywhere.”

For Thom Browne's first ever couture show, Pace wore an outfit that he describes as “a little bit nuts. It's super fun. But you know, I like to have a good time. I don't take anything too seriously.” Which meant a pair of Browne's signature grey trousers scissor cut at the knees to create a pair of shorts. To match, the Guardians of the Galaxy star requested a shirt have its arms torn off, as well as a waistcoat. “I've been kind of cutting the sleeves off my shirts for years now, it's just something I do,” Pace says. “Cut the shorts, I said. Cut the shorts!”

To complete his outfit he threw an oversized paisley jacket over his shoulders and wore a pair of chunky rubberised boots. It's the sexy, fleshier vibe that menswear's moving towards: aka the reason why the Internet loves Pedro Pascal. And Pace is down for it. “Thom Browne represents a bit of everybody, whether it's queerness, gender expression or something else. It's a brand that has a special alchemy. It's all about individuality. And it's cultivated a sort of community through his crazy, crazy clothing.”

Pace recognises that with clothing, comes power. He's also obsessed with the theatre – he's a self-confessed Shakespeare nut – and sees an element of the dramatic arts in Thom Browne. “As an actor, I know that clothing and costumes give you a certain feeling. They can change your mindset and will actually force you to get into character,” he says, explaining that he found the costumes he wore as Legolas' dad on the set of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit some of his favourites to date. “We had so many fun fittings, where we just had a good time exploring who this Elvenking was and the story we can tell through his clothes.” It's with Foundation, too, that Pace is really enjoying himself. “I play this crazy guy who thinks he's a god. I think about that in the costume fittings and think about how he dresses and presents himself. I think his delusion – he thinks he's a goddamn god – informs how he puts on his clothes.”

Pace approaches it all with a little less ego, though. It still feels like fun. “I'm just enjoying using clothes to express who I am. I'm not all about stiff suits that many think are the signs of masculinity. There's other ways to express your masculinity.”

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Step Out in N.Y.C. Ahead of 'Midnights' Release

Taylor Swift previously said the upcoming track "Lavender Haze" is partially inspired by "my relationship for six years"

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn are taking a bite out of the Big Apple!

Just days before the release of her upcoming 10th studio album Midnights, the "Willow" singer and her actor boyfriend were photographed on a walk in New York City.

 

Swift, 32, wore a long black sweater, plaid skirt and black tights as she smiled next to Alwyn, 31, who donned a long-sleeved green sweater and blue jeans.

The Conversations with Friends star, who wore glasses, also held tight to a book as they walked.

The Monday outing came just three days before the release of Midnights, which Swift previously hinted will contain a track called "Lavender Haze" inspired by her romance with Alwyn, whom she's been dating since 2016.

"I happened upon the phrase 'Lavender Haze' when I was watching Mad Men, and I looked it up because I thought it sounded cool," Swift said in a video shared on Instagram. "And it turns out that it's a common phrase used in the '50s, where they would just describe being in love."

She then explained, "If you were in the lavender haze, then that meant that you were in that all-encompassing love glow, and I thought that was really beautiful."

"I think a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just like 'public figures,' because we live in the era of social media," she said. "And if the world finds out that you're in love with somebody, they're gonna weigh in on it."

Though she didn't mention Alwyn by name, Swift said that in her current relationship, she and her significant other have had to stay strong in the face of public scrutiny.

 

"Like my relationship for six years, we've had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it," Swift said. "And so this song is sort of about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff."

Though Alwyn is an actor by trade, he's also flexed his songwriting muscles with contributions to recent Swift records.

He co-wrote "Betty" and "Exile" off the star's 2020 album Folklore under the alias William Bowery, and also produced six tracks. On Evermore, he co-wrote "Champagne Problems," "Coney Island" and the title track. There has also been fan speculation that Alwyn co-wrote an as-yet-unreleased track on Midnights.

The Boy Erased star told GQ U.K. in May that he does have a musical background, and used to perform in a band called Anger Management while in school.

He called his album contributions "the most accidental thing to happen in lockdown," as he was just "messing around on a piano and singing badly and being overheard."

"The idea was that people would just listen to the music rather than focus on the fact that we wrote it together," he said. "It was fun to do it together, and I was proud of it. It was nice getting such a positive reception."

Ahead of Midnight's release, Swift teased a brand-new lyric on Monday via a billboard in New York City's Times Square: "I should not be left to my own devices…"

The song lyric arrived around the same time that Swift unveiled the album release week's promotional schedule in a video shared across her social media pages. "Mark your calendars! Meet the Midnights Manifest," read the post's caption.

Among the various album-related promotional ventures is a "special very chaotic surprise" that Swift said will arrive at 3 a.m. EST Friday morning, as well as an "Anti-Hero" music video at 8 a.m.

Week 2 SDL: Developing a draft pitch for a test idea

Big dream ideas/where I want to go with my career, work?

As a communication design major, I aspire for my photography to make a big impact alongside my design work. As a communication designer, I believe it's my job to use my graphic and visual communicator skills to step into the role of a visual storyteller to convey the idea of brands, personas, and individual identities.

Moodboard/Ideas

Following up with my big dream ideas. My photography is based around the idea of personas, self expression and storytelling. Over the summer I've been involved in the creative art scene in Auckland, going to gigs, photoshoot, modelling for fashion brands and I find myself being interested in different artists across various creative fields like fashion, photography and performance art and how they represent themselves. There are also aspects of sexuality and gender norms in and outside the creative industries, of how people should wear and act so I want to explore this idea further.

2. Kristin-Lee Moolman (Photographer) and Ibrahim Kamara (Stylist) - 2026 (2016)

Overview: Photographer and stylist duo Kristin-Lee Moolman and Ib Kamara styles and photographs young Africans on the streets of London. A sense of expression and a lot of underlying issues about gender blend fashion was shown through his "2026" exhibition in 2016.

Target audience: People who are interested in gender blend fashion and the creative world.

Goals & deliverables: Clothes don't have gender. Breaking the stereotype of societal norms of what men or women should wear. An expression and appreciation for personal styles and Ibrahim Kamara's position in the industry of trying to create a new wave for creatives to tell stories that are authentic to themselves.

2. Harry Styles for Beauty Papers (2020)

Overview: Harry Styles, a famous singer appeared wearing fishnet stockings, make ups for a fashion magazine, and beauty papers. The idea of defying gender norms. Harry Styles expressed his point of view on his style and the idea of gender fluid aspect in fashion:

“What women wear. What men wear. For me it’s not a question of that,” Styles told The Guardian in the accompanying interview. “If I see a nice shirt and get told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay?’ Doesn’t make me want to wear it less though… I think the moment you feel more comfortable with yourself, it all becomes a lot easier.”

Target audience: Harry Styles fans or music supporters. But also those who embrace gender-blending fashion.

Goals & deliverables: Exploring fashion as a means of expression while challenging gender norms, this project celebrates the playful versatility of clothing, and the idea of freedom of self-expression regardless of societal expectations regarding gendered attire.

The global athleisure market size is expected to reach USD 662.56 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 9.3% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Athleisure is a popular category as it taps into several broad trends, including a global shift toward consumers wearing more casual clothing & seeking comfortable clothing. The rising popularity of athletic activities that require performance clothing will support market growth. True Fit’s Fashion Genome (via Direct Commerce), which analyses data from 17,000 brands and 180 million True Fit users, confirms that athleisure orders have increased by 84% since the pandemic began; sales of women’s athleisure bottoms in the United Kingdom alone were five times higher in December 2020 than in April 2020. In addition, order volumes for men's athleisure wear sales increased by 20% from the previous year.

Jung Kook Feels Nervous to See Himself on a Calvin Klein Billboard

The BTS singer tells GQ about his first-ever solo campaign for the American megabrand, which marks the seventh major fashion deal he and his bandmates have inked since the start of 2023. Plus, check out an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the shoot.

As a member of the biggest band on the planet, BTS’s Jung Kook has performed for a collective audience of millions. But there’s one thing he hasn’t done, until now: appear on the most famous billboard on earth. For that, he had to become the global ambassador, and newest face, of Calvin Klein’s denim and underwear lines. How did this latest accomplishment compare to singing and dancing in front of tens of thousands of people at a time? “I think I’m more nervous about seeing myself on a billboard,” Jung Kook tells GQ via email.

The singer joins Michael B. Jordan, Kendall Jenner, Blackpink’s Jennie, FKA Twigs, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson to star in the American megabrand’s spring campaign. But unlike Creed III actor-director MBJ, who recently told GQ that his buddies (jokingly) gave him a hard time overseeing his smoldering shirtless shots all over their Instagram feeds, Jung Kook says his friends have been supportive.

“They actually liked it,” he says. It has also gone over well with the world’s most powerful fanbase. “I was happy to hear that,” he says, referring to his friends co-signing the campaign, “but I couldn’t be happier that our ARMY loves it!”

Ever since BTS went on musical hiatus late last year, members of the band have been racking up brand endorsements of their own. Jung Kook was just the first of two BTS members to star in a huge brand deal in the last week; the day after his CK announcement, the Italian luxury brand Bottega Veneta released their spring campaign starring his bandmate RM. Six of BTS’s seven members have landed major fashion partnerships since the start of 2023 alone: SUGA for Valentino, Jimin for Dior and Tiffany & Co., j-hope for Louis Vuitton, V for Celine, and now, Jung Kook for Calvin Klein and RM for Bottega Veneta. News of a massive campaign starring singer Jin could arrive any day now.

BTS the group has been on the global fashion radar for years: Dior’s Kim Jones designed their tour uniforms in 2019, and the bandmates collectively became Louis Vuitton brand ambassadors in April 2021, shortly after wearing head-to-toe LV to the 2021 Grammys—and then did so again in 2022. (At the 2020 ceremony, they went full Bottega Veneta.) They’ve also repped Korean brands, including last summer when they rolled up, Reservoir Dogs style, to deliver a press briefing at the White House while wearing classic suits from the Korean menswear brand Tailorable. 

The members of the band were stars of fashion month this last season, which saw more European luxury brands inviting K-pop idols to sit in their front rows than ever before. Their attendance at various shows foreshadowed some of the brand deals that have followed: Not long after Suga went to the Valentino couture show in January, J-Hope hit the men’s shows for Hermès and Vuitton and sat beside his bandmate Jimin at Dior. The next month, RM was in the front row at Bottega Veneta. While high-fashion houses have been bringing in more celebrity ambassadors in recent years, Calvin Klein has featured famous people in its high-vis ad spots for decades. And because the products themselves—blue jeans, underwear—are relatively bare-bones and personal, they center their celebrity marketing campaigns on authenticity and intimacy, which usually includes some degree of undress. The shots of Jung Kook, shot by photographer Park Jong Ha in CK’s signature smoldering, black-and-white mode, are some of his most revealing public images yet; in the official press release, Jung Kook says he’s “incredibly excited for people to see a new side of me in this first campaign for the brand.”

It’s safe to assume the last few years have been a whirlwind for Jung Kook, who is 25 and presumably still discovering new sides of himself. Though he admits that his “taste in music changes so much that sometimes I don’t even know how my taste changes over time,” he’s made some definitive changes to his wardrobe as of late.

“In terms of fashion, I don’t think I can wear anything that fits tight on me anymore,” he says. “And I LOVE ‘all black’ looks, except for anything Calvin Klein Jeans. :)”

COVID-19 And Supply Chain Disruption Impacts Analysis On Athleisure Market

The global athleisure market size is expected to reach USD 662.56 billion by 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 8.9% from 2022 to 2030. Athleisure is a popular category because it taps into several broad trends, including a global shift toward consumers wearing more casual clothing, consumers seeking comfortable clothing, and health-conscious consumers engaging in more athletic activities and requiring performance clothing for these activities.

True Fit's Fashion Genome (via Direct Commerce), which analyses data from 17,000 brands and 180 million True Fit users, confirms that athleisure orders have increased by 84 percent since the pandemic began; sales of women's athleisure bottoms in the United Kingdom alone were five times higher in December 2020 than in April 2020. In addition, order volumes for men's athleisure wear sales increased by 20% from the previous year. Target's activewear line, All in Motion, which had only been launched before the pandemic, reportedly surpassed $1 billion in sales.

Despite this bleak outlook for fresh commercial opportunities, independent gear manufacturers continue to emerge, targeting those athletes who have remained committed to this sport. The majority of these new firms are the consequence of their creators' desire for a fresh running-apparel aesthetic or their ongoing hunt for high-quality athletic apparel.

According to GQ, at least a dozen new businesses have joined the market with identical origin stories in the previous five years. To mention a few, the British companies Ashmei and Iffley Road; the Danish brand Doxarun; and the American brands Isaora and Tracksmith, with the former focusing on high-end training gear and parkas and the latter investing in a retro Ivy League look.

The desire for highly comfortable clothes with sports features while undertaking any activity has increased in recent seasons, and wide pockets and elastic knot elements have become important products for carrying their large mobile phones, purses, and a few other daily essentials. The growing popularity of the utility fashion trend has spurred the demand for utility-active apparel.
