Absolute Skating interview with Marie-France Dubreuil - the whole thing is worth a read- about working with Kaori and Nathan and how she picks one non-ice dance skater or team per season to choreograph for, about working with Peng/Jin and Wang/Liu by zoom during covid, about embracing the Ukrainian team into the school
Let's talk a bit about your Academy. It's really inspiring to see your work and the growth of your school. And I loved how your students don't want to leave the sport when they retire, and you open opportunities for them, to work as coaches. There is a branch in London, Ontario now, with Scott Moir, Adrián Díaz and Madison Hubbell. Are there plans to open more?
I don't know. This also happened because we all couldn't travel so Scott started teaching in London and we said: "Okay, let's expand in Canada." We were stuck at home for a while and when you have a chance to work with champions like Scott or Madison... It was a privilege to teach them and now we have a common vision, so it just made sense for us to help them grow into the coaches we knew they could become and give them a "fast track". Because it takes time to build a school, but we've done it, we've spent ten years on the basic organisation of a school. And then we could just transfer it to another place and put the right people there and then it's going to grow much faster than what we built. If we can shave off some "building" time, then it's easy. And also, we were getting a lot of requests and couldn't fulfill them. So, it's nice to have another school to say: "No, we're full, but you have a great option." And the London school spent three weeks in Montreal in July, we really trained as a big camp. Storing energy like this is great for everyone.
I noticed that during this event, during practices and competition, you really give Scott his own space.
He is the head coach. But I'm always standing between Romain and Scott. If he needs something he just grabs me by the arm and we work together but he's the head coach of the London school.

The pilot’s job was to handle the aircraft and watch over the automatic systems to make sure they were doing their jobs properly. Meanwhile, the RSO handled the cameras, sensors, and the all-important Astroinertial Navigation System (ANS).
The ANS was the 1960’s version of GPS, but instead of using satellites to locate itself, the ANS used the stars. This is because, before the invention of the modern satnav networks, there wasn’t a way to navigate the SR-71 in the areas where it operated. The SR-71 needed to be able to fix its position within 1,885 feet (575 m) and 300 ft (91 m) of the center of its flight path while traveling at high speeds for up to ten hours in the air.’
The ANS works by tracking at least two stars at a time listed in an onboard catalog, and with the aid of a chronometer, calculates a fix of the SR-71 over the ground. It was programmed before each flight. They had to double check to make sure the navigational system was not aligning the floodlights in the hanger. The aircraft’s primary alignment and the flight plan were recorded on a punched tape that told the aircraft where to go, when to turn, and when to turn the sensors on and off. The stars were sighted through a special quartz window (located behind the RSO cockpit) and there was a special star tracker that could see the stars even in daylight.’

Didn't think about how rare it actually is, aside from the fact that there is no home race for some drivers on the grid. So who even could be next?
Canadian GP: Stroll
Spanish GP: Alonso, Sainz
British GP: Norris, Russell
USA GP (and Las Vegas and potentially next year, Miami): Sargeant
Mexican GP: Perez
And potentially next year:
Australian GP: Piastri, Ricciardo
Japanese GP: Tsunoda
Chinese GP: Zhou
No home Grand Prix (anymore): Bottas, Albon, Magnussen, Hulkenberg, Gasly, Ocon
Fun Home GP Facts:
On the current grid, only 5 drivers are actually from the city their home Grand Prix is held at:
Piastri / Melbourne: grew up about 12 km from Albert Park, although moved to the UK when he was 14
Sargeant / Miami: technically from Ft Lauderdale (29 km from the track), moved to Switzerland at age 12
Stroll / Montreal: born in Montreal, moved to Geneva when he was 12 as well
Zhou / Shanghai: born in Shanghai - also moved (to Sheffield) when he was 12
Leclerc / Monte Carlo: literally took the bus to school on the race track, lived here his entire life
For those without a home GP, these are the closest to their birthplace (distance measured as the crow flies):
Bottas: Hungarian GP
Albon: Silverstone
Magnussen: Zandvoort
Hulkenberg: Zandvoort (with Spa a close second)
Gasly: Silverstone (with Spa a close second)
Ocon: Silverstone (almost a tie with Spa which is only 6 km further!)
Furthest born from (one of) their home race(s):
Sargeant: Las Vegas GP is 3492 km from Ft Lauderdale
Ricciardo: born in Perth 2721 km from Melbourne
Special mention for 2 drivers not born in the country they drive for:
Albon: born in London, UK - if there were a home Grand Prix for him in Bangkok, Thailand, it would be 9535 km from where he was born
Verstappen: born in Hasselt, Belgium - only 70 km from Spa-Francorchamps, but 168 km from his home GP in Zandvoort in the Netherlands
And finally, Barcelona is almost the same distance to Madrid (where Sainz was born) as to Monaco (where Leclerc was born). When the Spanish GP moves to Madrid, it will be home turf for Sainz, but still 372 km from where Alonso was born.

Do you think Guard Dog designated pets should be legally required to wear an auditory identifier in public?
Summary of the proposed law: Guard Dog class pets will have to wear an auditory device such as a bell collar or proximity alarm at all times whilst in public spaces.
Yes
David Cooper, Talk Radio presenter and former owner of GDS Ltd
In all pets there is the danger of them running off, to name one problem, but not all are likely to harm people. This honour is reserved mainly for Guard Dogs.
In 2022, 54% of all reported violent pet-related incidents were caused by Guard Dogs. This is compared to 22% caused by Domestics, 9% by Platonics, 12% by Romantics, and only 3% by Objects. Clearly, something needs to be done to regulate Guard Dogs further and reduce their detrimental impact on the general population. They are a danger to adults and children alike, and although an extremely useful asset, precautions must be taken to ensure nothing gets out of hand. They are inherently violent, and if training is done badly then they can become killers — and not just in defence of their owners.
I recognise that a lot of proposals, such as MP North's in September 2021 to keep Guard Dogs muzzled at all times around vulnerable people, go too far, and are unworkable in terms of ensuring their owners can still be protected, but something needs to be done. And a warning causes no harm to anyone.
I know there are arguments that this dehumanises Guard Dogs, and that it is unneeded, but I disagree. These are the same type of people who argue that bell collars aren't good for cats despite the numerous evidence that they prevent bird kills. Pets do not feel embarrassed, that is the fact of the matter, and a bell or proximity alarm would not be an annoyance but rather an acceptable fact of having a Guard Dog. You own a Guard Dog, you must have a bell, and that would be the end of the matter.
One thing I do object to though is the lack of consideration given to disabled people throughout this proposal. If a deaf person were to need an alert to a nearby Guard Dog, for example, how would it work? They wouldn't be able to hear an auditory identifier.
I propose that, in addition to the auditory identifier, Guard Dog pets should be fitted with a device that emits a flashing light. This would allow those with low or no hearing to know when a Guard Dog is nearby. A GPS device would be useful if the Guard Dog is unseen, for example in an adjoining supermarket aisle, but this would be an invasion of the people’s privacy and technically very difficult to adapt.
However, something must be done to improve the safety of the general public and it is for that reason that I, with the expertise of my years as CEO of Guard Dog Security Ltd, support these proposals.
No
Ade Olayinke, Mayor of Sheffield and founder of Help4Pets
In my role as Mayor of Sheffield, I have met many residents, some of whom own Guard Dogs. In this job, and while working on the ground for Help4Pets, I have rarely met any dangerous pets — owners, however, can be a different story. Research conducted by YouGov suggests that over 90% of Guard Dog-related incidents can be traced back to their owners or training. Surely then the legislations on pet owners and training should be tightened, instead of these frankly humiliating proposals for Guard Dogs themselves?
Because yes, they are humiliating. Some say that pets can't be humiliated, but if that's the case, why do many books on pet care suggest it as the first choice of punishment? Alongside pain, of course.
Why should a pet have to pay for another's mistakes? Although I don't necessarily agree I can see the argument with pets that truly are dangerous, but most aren't (if not all — remember, pets are trained to obey their owners in all things. If they're hurting members of the public, this suggests that either their owner wants them to, or their training has gone wrong in some way. In either case, why should the pet be the one to pay when they are not at fault?). In fact, another poll by YouGov from September last year showed that out of pet-related groups (including the pets themselves) the general public are by far most afraid of WRU recapture squads, and for good reason, given their powers to act with almost complete impunity. One thing I can commend in this country is at least they aren't allowed to be armed.
But one of the stated aims of this new legislation is to reassure the general public, and if WRU recapture squads are the biggest obstacle to that, surely they should be the ones who need to be identified at a distance? Unless you view it as too extreme a measure for people, in which case you should ask yourself why you think it's okay for those classed as pets. However you view them, they are still human.
It is legislation on owners and trainers (both WRU and others) that should be tightened. The solution is not to force pets, who are already under tight control with existing laws heavily biased against them, to wear such a humiliating and unnecessary device, but to help everyone, both pets and people, live peacefully together without causing unnecessary fear, humiliation or other types of harm. To anyone.

Shanghai GP Thoughts Pt. 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Besides other racing thoughts, the tweets above ^^ has made me so upset. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. The choice of criticising organisers for doing something special for their home driver at his first home race by putting a laughing emoji is so unacceptable. Why do certain creators have a platform? Like did you never have a childhood dream come true? It makes me LIVID AND DISGUSTED that this person and his fellow podcaster yet again say something controversial, but still get to meet drivers or does an podcast about the sport. I have loved since I was a kid while engaging in saying Kachow or singing Life is a Highway, or watching Fast and Furious.
REMINDER to everyone to look at the images below and to read this: Zhou mentioned that as a kid, it was his childhood dream to make it into F1 coming from a country with no big motorsport culture. Lets not forget that his mom sacrificed a lot for him to race as a kid including leaving her family for Sheffield, England when he was 12 so he could get racing opportunities without knowing a lot of English. Today, he made it becoming the first Chinese driver to do so and got to compete in his first home race at Shanghai. He is inspiring so many young kids in Asia as a role model that they too one day can make it into Formula 1. He deserves that celebratory spot and I am so glad that the organisers did this for him, he was my Driver of the Day today. Sending him all the love and hugs headed his way💚🏎️ 🐉

Trying to prove a point to my gp, but do you guys know if any nhs gender clinics actually give their patients their prescriptions?
(i know how everything works, i'm going through complaints process w my gp, my gic is aware, I just am asking so i can point this out to my gp)
Hi Anon,
GICs do the referral letters to give your GP the go ahead to prescribe you T. GICs do not normally prescribe T directly.
I have attached some guidelines that NHS Sheffield have produced to give you an idea of what support GPs can get from GICs. So it is likely each NHS area has similar guidelines that you will be able to search for and find out what the NHS advises for your area.
I have also attached some information from the general medical council for GPs.

I think it’s ridiculous to say that EVERYONE except a few out of 66 million people that live in the uk like him. You can say that out of the people you know, people kind of tolerate him.
the gp critized him for the bad acting in dwd an mp and the “bought “ articles where they tried to push a narrative that had him being the first “male to wear a dress” on vogue, new king of pop shit, for “winning” album of the year when beyonce had a far better album, they mocked him for his stupid ass answers about a movie that feels like a movie etc..
those are not just haters but the general public being fed up by having his stans and mainstream media shoving him and his alleged talent down our throats and he is still does the bare minimum, everyone can see it.
He has never put himself in a position where he can really talk to the gp, his gets interviewed by losers like rob sheffield who has clearly lost his mind and is just embarrassing or by people like zane lowe that works for apple. zane lowe is a good interviewer but he still says absolutely nothing and gives nothing. When Howard Stern interviewed him and was very aggressive with the questions, his stans were crying in the comments saying he is attacked and what not, not knowing that howard stern is even worse with other artists and has traumatised some of them. The only reason he said yes to being interviewed by him is because it’s a statement, it means you are relevant in the entertainment business, he even said that between the lines when talking about Matt Cardle.

five good things
oh, I really need one of these right about now. I am Not Having A Good Time at the moment, and when I looked up the symptoms of Age-Related Loss of Plot at the weekend, I had almost all of them and have been collecting them for some time (some of them probably more than five years wtaf). I am the world's least self-aware person, but I have been meaning to do something about this for a while (like a year, it has taken me a year to even fill in the online consultation form for the GP, given that it requires executive function to remember to fill the form in during surgery hours because that's the only time it's available, and I have Precisely None of That Any More...) So, let's try and think of five good things to remind myself that not everything is anxiety and depression and lack of executive function and motivation...
I have a doctor's appointment for the aforementioned Age-Related Loss of Plot, having had an absolute crisis last weekend and then set myself a reminder for 8am on Monday morning when the GP surgery opens to fill in the blasted online form. I may have slightly over-egged some of my symptoms, but then again I may not have, my idea of what's normal is clearly a little skewed, and at least it got me not only an appointment, but an in-person appointment, in just under two weeks, no less. I can hang on till then.
I have a pair of bike jeans that fit! I've spent the last three or four gloriously sunny weeks unable to get on the bike because my effing protective jeans don't fit any more, and I've been ordering pairs, finding they don't fit, sending them back, ordering more, finding they don't fit, sending them back - but my latest order actually FITS (more or less, I'm going to have to take the ends up a little but that's OK), so on Monday I can finally take the bike to work again! I've been SO frustrated sitting in traffic in the car, and I can't wait to get back to filtering :D :D :D
@writersmonth's Writers' Pride Month Bingo event has got me writing my original characters Hal and Jack again and I'm so enjoying it. I bloody love them, especialy Jack, who is damaged and obnoxious and unintentionally hilarious on occasion, and I'm off to the pub in a bit to do a bit of writing (with any luck), either on that or the Barduil reincarnation story that @piyo-13 gave me the idea for during Barduil Month...
The weather is lovely - warm and sunny, not too hot, and it's been such a relief after all the rain we had in March and April.
We've been watching Ted Lasso, Yellowjackets and Peaky Blinders just recently and enjoying them all.
I went to see Def Leppard in Sheffield the other week with my friend from work and we had a brilliant time - they were the first band I ever saw, in June 1992, and I hadn't seen them again since - they were absolutely excellent, and even though we had to sit through Mötley Crüe being utter throwback misogynistic shite first (I have issues with them anyway, long story, but ffs, they think they can still get away with their 80s creepiness and it was very unpleasant to watch), it was deeply pleasurable to see the Leps absolutely blowing them off stage.
And I'm seeing Placebo for the first time in about ten years on Monday, postponed from December when Wee Brian Molko got the flu. Super excited about that!
That'll do. Little reminders to myself that all is not yet lost...

Can deuxmoi made up her mind first she said they were fake dating or whatever but now she's not sure if they were enough serious for him to get a tatto for her so it means they were at least a lil bit serious and it means they were actually dating but she said they didn't what?
She is not a fan, and she aggregates crowd-sourced info. She doesn’t really know.
And Taylor has been really careful at controlling the narrative for public consumption over the years (for safety) while Harry has been willing to *erase himself from the narrative* to protect her.
For a really long time, I thought *I* was going crazy noticing things. It was Rob Sheffield at Rolling Stone’s observations that helped me realize I was NOT seeing things. I loved him as an author and journo before I knew his Haylor heart, and his encyclopedic knowledge of lyrics allows him to draw the same conclusion that I was drawing.
But for the GP? The depth of their story (and their capacity to keep it quiet) would be shocking, and that includes DM.
