All about the Mahabalipuram’s Famed School of Architecture & Art
Even after 1300 years of Pallava rule, the town of Mahabalipuram still reverberates with the sound of chisel of stone. There are hundreds of talented artisans in the region that chisel images of the Hindu gods including Devi, Ganesa,Hanuman, Vishnu and dwarapalakas and create decorative artefacts from granite.Read on to know more on the famous Government College of Architecture and Sculpture set up in Mamallapuram.
Tumblr media
Established in the 1950s by the Government of TamilNadu, the Government College of Architecture and Sculpture set up in Mamallapuram was headed by the hereditary sculptor, Vaidyanatha Stapathi. With the help of Ganapati Stapathi, he moulded future architects and sculptors for several decades.
Ganapathi Stapathi was successful in reviving the Chola architecture form and structured it by tailoring a special course.
The duo created several successful careers and earnestly promoted this divine craft by supplying stone sculptures and artefacts to many temples for several decades in the country.
Artisans here also make animal figures such as peacocks, elephants, crocodiles and lions for the purpose of decoration supplying to many medium-sized outlets.
At present, lack of infrastructure and facilities for research and development has stunned the growth of the institution that is affiliated to the University of Madras. Almost all the artisans here have felt the need for consistent supply of granite for producing art and a sculptor village to sell their wares.
There are currently three courses offered in different streams: BFA in drawing and painting, BFA in sculpture and B.Tech in traditional architecture.
The different Tamil style of sculpture including Pallava, Chola, Pandya and Nayak is taught here. Students graduating out of the college get placed as engineers and architects in the CE and HR of Archaeology departments as they get trained in temple architecture. There are also job opportunities for stapathis, draughtsmen, designers, temple architects and sculptors in Government departments at various levels.
The college has also stressed the importance of traditional building architecture as to be aesthetically pleasing and suiting the climatic conditions of the country.
