Beyond the Clouds (2017)
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
At the outset, Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi captures your attention with a stunning opening shot that draws you into his version of Mumbai. This is not the first time a foreign director has shown the city through his lens while telling a story so intrinsic to it. But Majidi’s perspective isn’t bound by the cliché…

Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor among 20 Indians invited to The Academy
Twenty Indian film personalities, including actors Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Madhabi Mukherjee, Soumitra Chatterjee, Naseeruddin Shah, Ali Fazal, Anil Kapoor and Tabu, have been invited to be a part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The honorary organization has extended invitations to a record number of 928 new members from 59 different countries.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited a record number of 928 new members, including twenty personalities from Bollywood and Indian cinema. Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Madhabi Mukherjee, Soumitra Chatterjee, Naseeruddin Shah, Ali Fazal, Anil Kapoor and Tabu are the Indian actors on the list, while Aditya Chopra and Guneet Monga are the Indian producers invited to the honorary body. Cinematographer Anil Mehta, costume designers Dolly Ahluwalia and Manish Malhotra, sound designers Debajit Changmai and Biswadeep Chatterjee, production designers Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray, music composers Usha Khanna and Sneha Khanwalkar and film editor Ballu Saluja have also made it to the list.
As observed by Variety, the expansion of the Academy membership is an outcome of the anti-diversity backlash faced by the Oscars in 2015 and 2016. If all invitees in the list accept the membership, the total strength of the Academy will become 9,226.
Last year, Aamir Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Irrfan, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai, Mrinal Sen and Goutam Ghose and Sooni Taraporevala were invited by the Academy from India, reported Scroll.in.
“It’s interesting that though (past Indian) winners were Indian, it was for their work in international films — largely about India, but not made by India. For a global community like India to be represented on a larger scale, I think it will have to move beyond a single award for all foreign language films. It is very rare to see foreign language films represented in the other categories,” Priyanka was quoted as saying by TheQuint.com after accepting the invitation.
This year around, the Academy has extended its invitations to personalities from 59 different countries.

Mubi India January 2020 Releases: 62 Indian, World Films Announced
New streaming entrant Mubi has announced the list of 62 movies — 31 from India, and 31 from the rest of the world — that will release in January 2020 on its platform. That includes films from the likes of Satyajit Ray, François Truffaut, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Raj Kapoor, Gulzar, Bimal Roy, Shekhar Kapur, Shyam Benegal, Nandita Das, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Noah Baumbach, Yûzô Kawashima, Olivier Assayas, and Ram Gopal Varma among others. One film — Ladj Ly's Les Misérables — exclusive to Mubi, is currently shortlisted for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2020 Oscars. Mubi Lets You Watch Art Films, and Offers Free Movie Tickets In keeping with its policies, two new films — one Indian and international apiece — will be added every day, with each movie available for the next 30 days. While most Indian films, save for two — Benegal's 1975 drama Nishant, and Sai Paranjpye's 1980 drama Sparsh — are already available on other streaming services in India, the opposite is true for the international fare. Five of Truffaut's and three of Kawashima's previously unavailable movies are coming to Mubi India in January 2020. A few films premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam last year. In India, Mubi is currently available at an introductory price of Rs. 199 for three months. After that, it costs Rs. 499 per month.
