Food & Drinks in Gotham 4x06

* No food for you!  Harvey Bullock throwing the cop´s food to the ground is one joke among many where someone just can´t have their food. “Jim! Come on, it's lunchtime.” (1x05) Quite often it´s Victor Zsasz who gets denied some: Muffins “None for you, creep” (1x07) or Selina Kyle closing the pepperoni pizza box (4x01). He is raiding fridges, like when he drinks Jim´s milk (3x12) or aids Oswald raiding Loeb´s kitchen for peanut butter (2x01). And here he is snatching some food again. “It´s just gonna go to waste.”  And he is right, who knows what happened with the whole banquet on the table when Oswald was waiting for Edward. (3x06)

* Lobster ravioli & tagliatelle  When Victor Zsasz is bound to do secretary work and answer Oswald´s phone, or report to him what whoever answered it told him he doesn´t do the best work (“I don't know. I wasn't listening.”) but when Oswald sends him on a job he reports back in detail. He even lists what tasty food the persons he was observing  were eating to a Oswald who opted for some less nutritious fast food. Which does not look like healthy eating habits, even with all the stress he should take some time for it. 

 * Food & strategy  1. Harvey Bullock and Jim Gordon intimidate a cop they put into a car trunk by suggesting to leave him in there while they get lunch.  2.  “We were seen at dinner, as we have been the past three nights.” Sofia Falcone & Oswald Cobblepot have used food and publicity for a social and political message. With being seen eating in public various times they communicated support. Moreover this has additionally been used as means of relationship building and bonding. We will see if Sofia´s friendliness was sincere or this was merely another part of her manipulating Oswald.  She obviously utilized another situation to her advantage. It seems telling that instead of having dinner, like they did in public the private meeting was set up to be a lunch. Her cancelling it was used to raise suspicions and have Oswald investigate just to find something that would dissipate those suspicions and help her with the emotional bonding.  * Alcohol is not a solution  “Barkeep, another grasshopper.” “Those won't help.” Leslie Thompkins probably refers to alcohol not being a good method to gain back mental capacity but the way she says it I felt she was also putting a more general statement into it. Since the last episode we´ve seen her drinking at Cherry´s place and she never seemed overly happy to be there. Now we know she´s only doing it to be able to provide health care for others and it looks like the drinking is her trying to get over the part of the deal she does not like so much. Just that her comment to Edward makes me think that it isn´t really working for her. 

* Sausages & Metaphors  “No one wants to see how the sausage is made, but once it is made .. Isn't it delicious? Bite?”  Pyg is referring to his plan to kill all the corrupt cops at the GCPD. With offering Jim a bite from the sausage he is also offering him his plans. Jim declines both.  This could also work for a lot of things Jim has done, of course not for his “own demented reasons” but truly for Gotham. (On a side note: I really wonder if Pyg knows about Jim trying to get Carmine Falcone back and trying to collaborate with Sofia.) Also: It works fine for the current license system under Penguin as well. No one even addressed that the sunken crime rate is due to Oswald hunting down (and very likely) killing criminals and  even in the current state most turn a blind eye to the crime being committed and the victims of those in favor of looking at the finished sausage statistic.

But can we talk about this?!  * How Mr. Penn flinches and jumps back at Penguins violent reaction. How he clutches his hands close to his heart. How in comparison Victor is calm and thinking “ah, yes finally”.  * How Victors sinister but content smirk wanders over the left side of his face while Mr. Penn´s right eyebrow raises in worry and horror.   * How discussing Sofia Falcone´s demise makes Penn move his heads upwards and slightly back while Zsasz goes down and further into the matter. 

I really want to know how Mr. Penn got involved with Oswald Cobblepot. If the Penguin sometimes really makes him resent his decision to work for him.  He certainly was not happy about having to read to Sofia Falcone that she is on Oswald´s kill list, he did not look very happy with his job when Oswald was not content with the numbers he deemed “very good” (4x05) Also his little huff when he runs into Gordon after having been basically thrown out of Harvey Bullocks office.. (4x01)  But the thing is since Oswald only provides the guidelines and leaves the details to him Oswald´s outburst can´t be his only exposure to “violence.” Even if he has personell to deal with the criminals the crime he is licencing is rather violent. But of course if you only see it on paper ..  

Also up until this episode I did not know I needed this but can we have a scene where Penn & Victor Zsasz interact with each other ..  The scene looks like they must have gone over the information before presenting it to Penguin. Victor brought the photos and results from his surveillance to Mr. Penn, who added his knowledge about the property situation of the building and did further research about the involvement of the zoning commissioner. Do the Accountant & the Assassin have some private chats too?

Victor Zsasz: Stellar Hitman and mediocre Secretary  * I can´t help but headcanon Victor as the one to rush to the phone every time it rings and he is around because he loved to watch Star Trek TOS and his favorite character up to this day is  Lt. Nyota Uhura and every time he answers a call he feels a bit like the communications officer. He just is not interested in the communications part of the whole thing at all, or pretends to not be to mask that he actually enjoys it, whenever it´s possible without any important information getting lost. “Something came up. I don't know. I wasn't listening” (4x06)  * Does someone want to do a vintage AU where Victor Zsasz is a  switchboard operator in the finest, smoothest stockings with backseam .......

“Jim´s way”

Things have changed in Gotham. Jim Gordon has changed. In season 4 Harvey Bullock declares “Fine. We’ll do it your way.” (4x06) before they push a cop into the trunk of a car. While I can see why it makes sense in the context of this episode that Jim Gordon is declared the “bad” and violent cop (Harvey is seemingly going along with Penguin´s licensing system but Jim keeps making trouble so it´s more likely that he would be the one to push for the bagmen to be exposed) we can´t pretend this was the only incident. Jim has changed.   In the first season he looked at cops who beat or mistreat suspects with disdain. Harvey Bullock referred to that in another interrogation situation “You see that man there? He doesn't like it when I beat people. But for you, no objection. Why is that? Math. The lives of 30 children versus one scumbag. So I can beat you like a bongo drum, and St. Jim here won't intervene.” (1x02)  Jim did not hide his disapproval from his colleagues, eg. Lieutenant Bill Cranston who used his award from the Chamber of Commerce to beat confessions out of suspects. “Bullock tells me you're a real boy scout. Don't think we should be roughing up the skells?” “They do have their rights.” // “I just met Lieutenant Cranston.. He's a thug” (1x03)  In season 1 it was Harvey Bullock initiating the interrogation by "car torture”. He managed to get information from Charlie Griggs about Loeb and Falcone that way. (1x18) Jim Gordon already was a accomplice in this but a couple episodes later he has adapted those methods as “his way.” The first episode has introduced Jim Gordon as someone who sees a situation where everyone has drawn a gun and finds a way to to de escalate it without having to even touch his own. He shows empathy for the suspect who “just wants his pills” he shows to be responsive for his needs and does use violence only when the deception fails but then stops. When he´s trying to stop the other cops from beating the man further he needs to be shoved away. When Bullock scolds him he isn´t having any of his “shoot the son of a bitch” (1x1) principle. I miss this side of his character.

Gotham s4ep6 “Hog Day Afternoon” Personal Review 

“I just like to know where I stand” Warning spoilers below  

* LESLIE THOMPKINS addressing things like Kristen and stuff wow I´m so not used to this. Gotham acknowledges reasons why characters shouldn’t be on good terms with each other * Find yourself a neurologist, which I am not. Lee says and makes so much sense * It has to be her Ed says, she knows him, what he is capable of. This is exactly why her answer is no. Great point love this! What I don´t love however is how they portray Ed not that he would not “deserve” some ridicule but have him not being able to remember words, be at loss at what kind of something he should do to that clinic idk I just don´t like it. Her telling Ed how he should have used his leverage was nice though. * Lee feeling responsible for preventing the Virus from getting stopped even despite having been infected and trying to give something back to the areas the Virus seemed to have had the worst effects one. She´s a muffin. Love her. But yeah that kinda opens up the question of responsibility for others too. * Lee unofficially treating people YAY, healthcare system making that necessary BOOO * I wonder if Lee telling Solomon Grundy about Ed using him and Ed hearing it will lead to issues later. 

* Oswald taunting Jim with the license system. What is this fanfiction? * Also Jim hiding and being sneaky round Sofia and Oswald what is this the new love triangle .. * Generals & foot soldiers I really like OSWALD COBBLEPOT talking about things like that things like including the Pax Romana. Makes you really think about what kind of books the bird reads! * It´s just that I don´t like him asking so many questions that would let others have to do the thinking for him.  Jim telling Oswald about the murdered cop with the pig head maybe being a message to him and Oswald goes like: “What sort of message?” Then there´s that other “Why?” before Penn and Zsasz present him what they found out about Sofia´s doings. Since when is Oswald asking all others to think for him? Delegating work is one thing but that starts to become worrisome. Is Ed contagious?!  Least he puts together the obvious puzzle pieces. “All while she´s pretending to be my friend. She has been planning a war”  And oh honey it´s just like you did yourself in S1. I hope they will refer to this more! Just Oswald you know, think just a tiny bit farther. Why would she go on all those sensitive meetings while she was supposed to eat with you. If she is planning to take you out she would certainly not risk putting her actions on a display like that. I would bet a lot of money that she wanted him to see that.  I know I have the benefit of hearing her talk about taking over the city from Penguin so that’s more reason to be suspicious but we as audience still can´t be sure if she is actually carrying out what she presents Jim soooo, if I can think of that Oswald should have thought of that three days ago.  “A general does not need to know every foot soldier.” Are you sure? Are you yourself Oswald? Since when does your own ego and grandeur come in the way of things? I get that he would have to delegate things but that´s starting to be pure recklessness. Listen to yourself:  “I guess you're always one step ahead, Oswald.” “It's why I'm alive.” * Zsasz looks at the orphanage make me wonder if he is suspicious though. But I guess most of it is his god damn it I came here to murder and kill and here are children I cant murder and kill in front of children, why is that happening face * SOFIA FALCONE is so good though: “Oswald, I want you to know I understand the pressure you face. Your very survival depends on seeing everyone as a potential threat. And I watched my father bear that weight for years. I don't want you to end up like him.” * Why does it always turn out so bad for Oswald when people and with people I mean Edward and Sofia let him wait in front of prepared food? Least he seemed to have learned from the last disaster. It´s just the salad on the table not a whole table filled with food that you gotta pack back up and store it in the fridge. “Now Victor”  Oswald and VICTOR ZSASZ are a joy as always. Victor just keeps taking food as usual.  I just don´t like that “it´s not a date” joke, that´s not even funny in sitcoms. Okay granted Victor being the one keeping referring to it as a date and being totally indifferent to the corrections kind of makes it less insufferable. (Also Oswald screaming about it not being a date kind of resembles parts of the fandom doesn´t it .. ) * “Just so we're clear is this a chat chat or a shovel in the trunk kind of chat?” “Get the shovel.” Victor as well keeps checking if he is meant to murder. Love this.  But dear what you two did was a chat chat not a shovel situation. Dead people don´t talk, they can´t change your minds. 

* HARVEY BULLOCK and JIM GORDON investigate the murder of a cop. One who was working for Penguin. * “I´m working on it”  Dear don´t tell me they are gonna have Bullock be one of those who took money too [Edit: damn it]  * Okay but that hospital scene with Jim saying to Harvey taking money from Penguin has to stop and Harvey talking bout bills and debts felt so off .. morally and idk just pulling debts and bills out of the hat like that seems lazy * All that detective work happening. Love it. All of it. More please. * “Bad cops. They deserve to be prosecuted and stripped of their badges, not butchered.” Hallelujah Jimbo, hallelujah * “Fine, we´ll do it your way” Harvey Bullock says before stuffing someone into a trunk for interrogation. Okay we´ve come a full circle. Now roughing up suspects is Jim´s way. In season 1 Jim was the one keeping Harvey from doing that. In season 1 it was Harvey who let someone dangle out of a driving car to get information.  But yeah I get that in the show it would be a play on Harvey going along with the system and Jim being the troublemaker but still ..   * Despite the weirdness I´m really enjoying the case. And that grenade.

* PYG is a fan of Jim Gordon I like how he lets his fingertips dace over Jim´s shoulders “If I were a policeman you could what reason with me, appeal to what we have in common. Well, Jim, may I call you Jim? Jim That´s exactly what I going to do” Both see the corruption. Both don´t like the corruption in the GCPD.  I have a question does Pyg know about Jim getting Falcone(s) back? Does Pyg need to read one of those “your fave is problematic” posts ? * Jim claims they have nothing in common though. “You're not doing this for Gotham, you're doing it for your own demented reasons.”  Jim does ugly things for Gotham, he knows what´s it like to do it for the city not for demented reason, least that’s what he obviously thinks. Thank god that there are pig´s heads on the victims (not umbrellas down their throats) to make that distinction crystal clear.   * No one wants to see how the sausage is made but they all eat it Pyg says and has a point. One about the license system. The crime statistics are down but that worked through Penguin killing criminals. Pyg of course is talking about his plans to kill all corrupt cops. Ugly at first but necessary for a nice picture at the end.   * Apparently the piece PYG listened to while applying the make up to the pigs head is Vesti la giubba from Pagliacci which “is sung when Canio discovers his wife's infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown ..  exemplifies the entire notion of the "tragic clown" smiling on the outside but crying on the inside.”  Well applying make up to a face is a parallel, maybe the infidelity can be found in the cops not adhering to the law they are meant to carry out  ..

* “specifically, not no cop” * “Hey, don´t leave me back here with this thing” * “I just like to know where I stand” * “If it takes less than three minutes I´m all ears” * Has Harvey ever worn black gloves? * What´s up with all those (tilted) ant and bird perspective shots. I mean I´m not complaining ..

That´s something I forgot to write in the review. I´m still asking myself why I quite enjoyed what should be appalling. Gender rolls got my eyes still rolling, do you really have to put makeup on the pig´s head determined for your female victim? But anyway is body language and habitus is kind of fun to watch and the tone of his “Oink, Oink” was somehow , I don´t know why just on point.   He certainly has a thing for names and pronouns.  “Well, Jim may I call you Jim? Jim, that’s exactly what I was going to do.” “ You, Detective, you, you are safe as safe can be.”   But what´s more amusing is another thing he kept repeating: “I'm a big fan. Big, big fan.”  If you keep listening it more and more sounds like I´m a big fan, Pig, Pyg fan.  I don´t know if he really talks fancy, (okay the intonation yes but it makes me more thing of stage actors?) but he´s certainly having fun with words and language, not only the pig themed words, the “cut and run” but also things like alliterations “I have suffered profound loss at the hands of the greedy pigs in power. Profound.”  Even a couple sentences apart “Never you fret. ..  Never you fear,”
