John Legend and Lunch Tables. (Rami Malek x reader)
Summary: High School AU You hate school dances but you have to be at this particular one. What can your best friend Rami do to make the night better?
A/N: so this is my first X Reader that I’m actually posting anywhere so any feedback is wonderful thinking about making this a kind of series, What do you think?
Word Count: 1.5k
You hated School dances, you always had. They encompassed your two least favorite things: loud, Shitty music and large crowds. How you found yourself at this dance was a conundrum. Well, It wasn’t really a conundrum per say, but If you had the choice to be anywhere but there you wouldn’t be at this stupid dance.
You were there as an obligation to your school’s National Honor Society. The Sadie Hawkins Dance was held every February and was hosted by the club, which made it a requirement for all members to attend.
There was, however an upside to the evening. Your best friend and long time crush, Rami would be there to keep you company. Events like these were exactly his scene. He was great with people and he loved to dance in sing and entertain people.
That’s how you ended up sitting right next to a good friend on your schools bleachers on a Saturday night people watching. There might have been one person in particular that you were watching but Joe, your friend, would be none the wiser about that detail.
Rami was dancing on the outskirts of the obligatory giant blob of teenagers. He was with his twin brother Sami. You and Sami had talked a few times before but you weren’t really good friends. He was wicked smart and a bit introverted, unlike his brother. It wasn’t that Rami was smart as well, but he wasn’t in the advanced classes like his brother, and since he was so extroverted and friendly, Rami had been the first one to make you feel welcome, so you had an easier time talking with him.
It was the first day of school when you met him. You were new and absolutely terrified. You went through the first part of the day only exchanging names and useless conversation. You got to lunch already thoroughly done with your day and with this school. You were just looking for a place to sit and eat your lunch in peace when you heard your name being called.
It turned out to be Rami. You joined him there and he was a godsend. He seemed to be the first person all day that actually took an interest in you rather than just skating over you. That day was also how you met the rest of your friends at the school. In all there were 12 people that continued to sit at that table every day. They became hour family in just a short time.
Firstly, was what you all affectionately called the five kings. They were the tightest knit of the group and a year older than the rest of you. There was Roger, who had a different girl every week and was considered a total Babe at school. Brian Super Genius, whose nose was often in a book. John was a quiet one. He would sit and listen but when he chimed in you could be surprised that such sass could come out of his mouth. He was a firecracker and everyone that sat with you knew it. Lastly were Fred and his boyfriend Jim. Fred was the camp one that took every opportunity to flirt with every person at the table. Jim on the contrary was pretty quiet but you could tell that the two of them loved each other wildly. You could already see them getting married in the future. You even called them your two dads.
Then there was the rest of the group. This group comprised of Gwil, who was pretty reserved in school except for a few witty one liners and some conversation, but he was a real goofball when he was outside of school. Ben was part of the soccer team along with Gwil and was another smart kid. He was, however, another one to have a new girl quite often. Joe was probably your best friend at the table. He was a total goof all of the time and you loved it. He was also the sweetest boy that you had ever met you could trust him with anything. Then of course there was Sami, quiet and studious most of the time, and Rami. You and Rami took to each other like
A fish takes to water. He brought out the best in you. Things that even you didn't know existed. You had become bolder and less afraid of the world as a whole.
Unfortunately for you was that you had developed a giant crush on him since that first day, but there was no way that he could ever like you back. You two got to the point where your normal conversations sounded like flirting but you both knew it was just friendly banter so you didn't read into it. At least you tried to but every compliment that he gave you made your heart leap with joy that he thought that way about you. When you had explained to him that you were going to the dance he seemed excited to declare that he was going as well. You didn't want to think about what girl had asked him to go with them and you certainly did not want to think about him saying yes to her.
That's how you found yourself on the bleachers in your school gymnasium wishing you were brave enough to go dance where Rami was with his brother and a few others from your table with Joe rattling on about whatever new video game he was trying to beat.
The loud Music banged on your eardrums as you let thoughts that tighten your chest float through your head. You aren’t even listening anymore until a familiar song seeps through the fog and fills your thoughts with longing.
All of me loves all of you… All your curves and all your edges… All your perfect imperfections.
You loved this song, you always had. And at that moment you wanted nothing more than for Rami to sweep you up to dance with him. You wanted im to hold you tight and sing the song softly in your ear and mean every word.
You closed your eyes losing yourself in the fantasy. Until you felt a hand on your shoulder. You looked up expecting to see Joe in front of you. Instead you found yourself looking into the eyes of Rami.
“Dance with me, Y/N” He gave you that smile that could melt your heart, but there was something else there as well. Something that you never saw there. Was it Nervousness? No, it couldn’t be, it had to be something else. Whatever it was, you decided not to question it. You were going to dance with him.
“Of course Rami, how could I resist a dance with the most handsome boy here?” His eyes gleamed and the strange look in them disappeared. He took your hand and lead you to the edge of the crowd. To your surprise he tugged you close and put his hands on your waist.
“Is this alright” He asked. And there it was again. The unmistakable look of uncertainty was back in his eyes again. Your answer was to wrap your arms around his neck and him closer. You started swaying to the music.
Give your all to me... I’ll give my all to you... you're my end and my beginning… even when I lose I’m winning
Neither of you had spoken for quite some time until Rami broke the silence.
“Y/n, I have to tell you something.” You held your breath as you waited for him to continue. He took a deep breath as he did. “Y/N, I bought a ticket just so I could be here with you tonight. I like you, I have since that first day in the cafeteria.”’ You stared into his not believing what he was saying, not knowing to saw. You watched as his eyes filled with fear and sadness. “I’m sorry, that was crossing a line just forget-”
You stopped him right there before he said anything else. “NO! No. I-” you didn't know what you wanted to say so you just winged it. “I.. uh… I feel the same way. I always have but I thought you weren’t Interested so I -”
It was his turn to cut you off with a finger to your lips. You both had stopped moving by this time. He cupped your cheeks and looked deep into your eyes. “Stop me if this isn’t ok.”
You didn't dare stop him though, you had been waiting for this for way too long. He slowly leaned in and his lips met yours. It wasn’t longer than a few seconds but it was tender with the promise of so much more.
“Fucking finally darlings.” You heard someone from behind you. Both of you turned to see Freddie dancing with Jim. They were both smiling ear to ear. “Dear, frankly we were about to lock you two in a closet until you pulled your heads out of your asses to finally notice the way you looked at each other.”
You laughed and Jim, ever the man of few words, confirmed what fred was saying. “Well, He’s not wrong.”
You thanked the heavens in that moment for John Legend and lunch tables.
