My personal least favorite thing about SRIV is how they handled Johnny Gat tbh. He's my favorite of the core side characters up through three, but in four he's just... kind of obnoxious. I would've thought it would be cool if the aliens had brought him back to try and infiltrate the gang, and then he turns back to their side when he realizes how much the Boss and the others really do care about him and didn't forget about him, but the whole "Wow! Look at Johnny Gat! He should be the real leader of the saints!" bit that carried over into GooH was just unfunny at best and outright meanspirited at worst. We've had three games up to this point that've established why Johnny isn't the leader of the gang and respects the Boss as a person. I know his character isn't exactly the deepest well in the universe but there was something interesting in that dynamic, where despite his capability for violence and charm he wasn't suited to actually leading the gang. Why ruin that for jokes that just didn't land. But that's just my personal take on it, obviously others are allowed to feel differently!

i think you’re onto something and it’s not just a johnny issue, it’s a larger problem of the actual handling of all the characters in sriv. johnny gets it pretty bad tho. we get the most banal, surface level introspections on characters who have had 2-3 games by now to have gotten this exploration. the idea of simulations is reflecting their fears/regrets/etc is a good idea when done well, but the game can’t even be bothered to give everyone that much. pierce, kinzie. i’m so sorry.

and what you bring up about johnny i 100% agree with—the game feels more concerned w being quippy and referential and painfully unfunny rather than like. giving us any of the apparent reflection it wants to give. you’re right, johnny isn’t better equipped to handle things than the boss, and i think it’d actually be interesting if there was conflict related to that. the boss got them into this mess, and if others think johnny would be better whereas johnny doesn’t feel that way or is unsure, it could’ve made for interesting, long-lasting tension. or even the idea you brought up w him being primed and used as a mole could’ve been fascinating. in the original drafts of sriv, it was gonna have (a clone of) johnny be the antagonist. and while i don’t think that route would’ve been…..ideal, i do think setting up johnny and the boss against each other makes for engaging conflict. ofc it would be resolved bc we know johnny respects and cares for the boss immensely, and instead of just bad jokes about it we could have the space to show and explore that connection. sr2 works so well for the boss and johnny’s dynamic bc we really see that love come into play w the lengths they’re willing to go to for each other.

it’s why the idea of undercover w there being an actual schism within the saints is interesting. why the conflict between pierce and shaundi in srtt is one of its strongest points. why dex and troy have one of the most interesting dynamics. why the reboot’s “power of friendship” angle fell flat for me. bc saints row’s cast works best when there’s conflict between them that means something. instead of just wasting it on bad jokes and problems that get resolved by the time the cutscene is over.

maybe i got away from the original point but. yeah. johnny deserved better in that game. also imo i do still think the boss is the worst written character of sriv. but i think i’ve talked about that before so i won’t repeat myself. but everyone got it bad. at least sriv let us kiss johnny gat tho right😭

“#gooh is in my top 5 “i question writing this into my hc” things gonna be honest” i would honestly LOVE to know what things you hesitate to include in your canon? one thing i really love and respect about your work is your dedication to sticking to the actual canon so i’m super curious to hear what things you actually don’t consider part of it. or at least the ones you go back and forth on.

OK firstly, thank you, that means a lot to me 😊

There probably isn't anything that isn't a part of it at all unless I forgot about it which does happen pretty often! Things I go back and forth on is definitely the best description of it.  Like, almost all have led me to write some moments I really like and yeah I am proud of making the canon (at least the bits I didn't forget!) fit, but I feel like when I started writing I didn't even think about just *not* sticking to canon. This list is not ordered or exhaustive, it's just the stuff I could think of off the top of my head.

1. GOOH. This is actually a kind of minor one, bc the pros outweigh the cons massively but it's been on my mind today bc of the chapter I've been writing.

Pros: a very sweet Matt/Boss moment and Matt/Boss/Johnny friendship moment after they return from hell, throwing in Jezebel as a character, and obviously the new planet ending is sort of essential to my "they tried to save the earth but couldn't so now they need somewhere new" thing. Plenty of smaller jokes and again some other good parts that factor in.

Cons: so this is actually stuff that just canonises monotheistic religious views that my characters wouldn't normally hold that makes me feel... weird... idk. I feel like they have enough time between GOOH and my fanfic to process that but I was thinking about it today and it bothered me. GOOH also canonizes Matt and Asha sleeping together in some capacity... ok that's not so bad, it adds some depth to the storyline and stops them having unresolved sexual/romantic tension as implied in SRIV. But at times I worry I'm portraying one or both of them as pretty dickish.

2. All SRIV romance options

Pros: I mean, Casey probably would fuck all her friends if it was the only option. And I hc SRIV as taking place over 2-3 months. After that time-travel ONSs were an option. And her whole one time rule has its place in the plot.

Cons: Kind of forces everyone into bi/pan/other mspec apart from Ben and Keith. I would have highly considered making Pierce gay. Maybe Asha would've got thrown token straight lol. Plus who says everyone (again, except Ben, who... seemed like he would say yes to whatever she was about to ask... and Keith) would fuck her? Seems a tad Mary-Sueish. 🤔 Also doesn't gel well with her and Johnny having a primarily brother/sister relationship but I think I've mostly explained that with her having a false romantic epiphany and the fact that he struggles to connect 'hot 30ishyo woman who I massively respect' with 'that kid i knew back in Stilwater' after the 6 year gap. Plus... romance options aren't really true canon, I definitely could have left some out! But considering I did use them all, I could've said better things about the Casey/Pierce time bc that was a culmination of a lot of UST.

3. Cyrus Temple plastic surgery disguise thing.

Pros: definitive 'end date' for Casey getting plastic surgery for scars etc.; it put her off. One amusing joke.

Cons: Idk I just hate it hate it hate it. I think because a lot of game mechanics are easily explainable e.g. forgive&forget and notoriety wipe being bribes, an advanced alien race COULD have time travel etc. whereas this is something that's pretty batshit by SR3 standards but mostly at the expense of like two moments I COULD'VE JUST NOT MENTIONED IT. So if this list was in order I suspect this would be #1 😂

4. The destruction of Earth; or more specifically that they don't/can't undo the destruction of Earth despite having time travel.

Pros: I mean it's inkeeping with the Saints for me. Some people do just die and don't come back. The idea that the new planet thing is moving on from something irretrievable. A new beginning.

Cons: It just feels like a cop out using the 'oh they have time travel but can't use it to save the world bc that's a paradox' thing?

5. Matt and Casey's age gap.

Pros: The millenial/zoomer dynamic, parallels being drawn i.e. joining/creating gangs at 15, Casey being 24 when they met and Matt being 24 when the story begins. I guess relationships where the woman is older are also underepresented compared to the reverse, and being able to give Matt a "coma years don't count" line.

Cons: Idk just on a personal level obviously I'd just prefer them NOT to have a 7.5 year gap. I make it clear that she wasn't ever attracted to him until he was 22 and that the spaceship changes things in terms of life stages but still.

Bonus of some things that were my own decision that I go back and forth on: the name Casey Clark at times (there is a whole thing of 'bc she is secretly a nerd like Matt/Kinzie but she's an analog nerd' but still), Matt being (at least based on his own history) heteroromantic (ok supports split model of attraction but at the same time... Matt to me reads as a canonically bisexual character which we don't often get, why not make him bi/panromantic too?), Casey and Johnny's brother/sister thing in general (idk if that was trying too hard to make them platonic bc generally I rather like GatBoss), writing in accents, not giving enough focus to the secondary pairings esp the more visibly queer ones all bc I originally wanted to keep secondary pairings up in the air for the reader, Casey's SR3 look at times, POSTING HER NAME ALL OVER FUCKING TUMBLR. I could go on ����

This all seems more negative than I'm meaning it to be bc I put pros first. I love working in the canon and the way plot points have blossomed from it. In fact I put something at the end of my last chapter about how things for this often just fall into place and just leave me 😲.

I will probably make a second list at some point when I think of more 😅

Prompt: When Cisco called Barry his best friend, it was because Caitlin was more than a friend to him.

Cisco unfolded the takeout menu he kept in his bottom drawer. Two pizzas and a side order of fries were usually enough to share between Ralph and Caitlin, but he wasn’t too sure what Iris went for. 

He walked into the Cortex. “Hey,” he said, tossing her the menu. “What do you want?” 

She caught it after fumbling a bit because of her long nails, before smoothing it out on the table. It only took her thirty seconds before she closed it again. “Steak sub.” 

“For real?” Cisco was impressed, taking it back. It took years of practice to narrow down his choices from Heszo’s 24/7 Diner in less than five minutes unless he already had a hankering for something. 

He browsed the pasta dishes as if he didn’t know them all already. 

“Yeah, I want something hearty.” 

“Good idea.” 

20 minutes later they were digging into steak and cheeses while watching the coms. Barry and Ralph were on patrol, but it was a quiet night, so they muted their mics and left on a live feed instead.

Caitlin was on a date. 

Cisco glanced over at his phone.

Iris put her soggy food down in its styrofoam container, licking at the corner of her thumb. “Okay,” she said. “That’s the hundredth time I’ve seen you checking your phone, and I think I’m getting offended on Caitlin’s behalf.” 

Her words struck him with an irrational panic. “What do you mean?” 

She rolled her eyes. “Caitlin doesn’t need your constant vigilance. I was there when she did the background check on the guy. He checked out. Ivy League Ph.D. and everything actually, seems her type.” 

Cisco didn’t realize he was chewing on his inner cheek until he tasted the blood. He made a disgruntled face and dropped his phone on the table, cramming a handful of fries into his mouth to wash away the copper on his tongue. And to stop him from saying something stupid. 

“’ish noh a gooh idea!” He swallowed. “I don’t think she should be dating right now.” 

Iris crossed her arms and frowned. “You don’t get to decide that for her. She hasn’t dated in three years, Cisco. When would be a good time?” 

He didn’t answer. 

Her eyebrows pulled together as her face did that thing it did when she was making an epiphany. It usually was the last thing Barry would see before he’d whisk her out of danger. Also usually the precursor to a hell of an article the next day. 

“Oh,” she said, and it came out very gentle. 

Cisco didn’t like the sound of that. “What?” 

She busied herself with sprinkling back on the shredded lettuce that had fallen off her steak sub. “True or false: Barry is your best friend.” 

Cisco eyeballed her. “...True?” 

“Why?” she asked lightly before taking another big bite. 

Cisco watched her eat for a moment with utter confusion before he answered, “He was your best friend first, you tell me.” He glanced over at the monitors just in time to watch Ralph stretch his arms out to catch a bird. Iris snorted.

“If Barry is your best friend, then what is Caitlin to you?” 

Cisco laughed, swinging around lazily in the rolling office chair. “What is this, kindergarten? You can have more than one best friend.” 

Cisco’s phone buzzed. They both froze, staring at it. Somehow, he felt that Iris was not experiencing the heart-pounding in his chest the way he was. 

Caitlin: Made it home safe 

Cisco texted her back immediately. 

Cisco: All good?

She typed and then stopped. Cisco waited, ignoring Iris’ telling looks for her to start typing again. 

Caitlin: Ean was nice but boring. Details tomorrow. Goodnight!  

Cisco: Ew. 

Cisco: Night! 

Cisco reported to Iris what Caitlin said. She raised an eyebrow. 

“Interesting.” 

“That Ean was a bust? Not really.” Cisco gathered his containers and got up to shove them into the trash. The garbage was full actually. He yanked it out of the bin to breach it outside. 

“I meant... it’s interesting that you’ve both refused to realize that your best romantic relationship is with each other.” 

He stepped through his breach and into Central City’s midnight.

8. Oldest WIP

… … …the FFI novelization I started when I started writing seriously as a teenager.  I got several chapters in, then restarted it, then restarted it again and parts of it are still up on the internet, wheeze

I still intend to finish it, and it’s kinda a good thing I didn’t just blow through it, because it’s ambitious and I’ve come to a lot of worldbuilding conclusions I wouldn’t have by letting it set.  It’s still way overdue for the writing it out part, though.

I also have a full series Ultima novelization series planned.  Pray for me.

Not that I know anyone else really likes video game novelizations other than the people writing them, even for pretty bare-bones games, but I like them so I presume some other folks enjoy them too.

10. Doyou set yourself deadlines?

Occasionally.  Usually it’s like, “I wanna get this fic completed by [x] date” or “before I start on [y],” though.

I have more luck with fic exchange deadlines and challenge deadlines and things like that, though.  Though I missed the last challenge deadline I signed up for because I signed up for too many exchanges this year and it snuck up on me.  Oops.

Fanfiction.  Really, though, give me that emotional continuity or whatever it’s been called recently.  If I love a thing I love me more of the same.

I like Sci-fi, Sci-fantasy, and High Fantasy.  I like heavily worldbuilt stuff but with characters that are engaging.  I really like rogue types.  Cosmic horror is its own thing, but it’s fun when it’s built into one of the above.

I especially like stuff that engages my brain in a clever or creative way, because I’m one of those people who spots the plot twist three chapters in regardless of whether you intended to write foreshadowing or not.  XD

Writing:

I … actually really like writing plot-heavy stuff and new adventures for characters and all kinds of side stories, I’m just not very good at long plot stuff before I start second guessing myself and end up putting it on the back burner.  And I enjoy worldbuilding the same.  Magic can be very fun, especially the magic that makes no logical sense, but also the magic that works according to rules.  Same with sci-fi that just works because it’s advanced and taken for granted by the people who live within that world, no explanation given.

That aside, I’ve actually really enjoyed writing the ‘mundane’ RL analogue stuff that is early Saints Row.  Even if I keep putting ghosts and paladin-style magic into it, but hey - GooH is a thing now.

And I really, really enjoy rogues.

I have a bad habit of getting hung up on little details here for two hours and eventually handwaving everything anyway there.  It can’t be said I don’t make the effort, though.

the criticism levelled towards AoM was pretty fuckin consistent so if V have any sense -- which ill assume they do, theyre a company that wants to make money after all -- theyre going to have to take some of that on board or its going to really fuck up their reputation. SRIV did good (but not as good as SR3) but GOoH was a critical flop and AoM was critically and financially disappointing. theyve been constantly and consistently talking about how GOoH led to a kind of split universe where theres multiple endings they could follow, one of which being AoM. i dont think theyd be so insistent on the idea they could more than one thing with the franchise if they didnt intend on doing multiple, different things with the franchise. 

V havent had a real banger release since 2013 and with AoM absolutely not being a successful enough vehicle on its own terms to franchise, theres a lot of pressure on them to come out with something good right now. im very sure the next game they release is gonna be a Saints Row game because they need to remind people what they loved about the franchise, but what exactly it is i cant say. AoM relied a lot on selling itself by having familiar fan favourites, but that didnt actually work and at this point my gut instinct is that theyre probably not going to try that again. i would not be surprised if the next Saints Row game was a complete hard reset with an entirely new cast in a totally new location. 

i also dont think its going to have a huge number of super powers and shit because again, they just did that, and it didnt work. it kind of worked once but they havent been able to recapture that magic and it would foolish to keep pushing it when it hasnt been working out. 

so yeah. i think its way too early to make any solid guesses about what we’re getting, but my instinct atm is that V are going to hard swerve away from AoM because that direction isnt working out. they have to listen to critics and they have to listen to fans. i dont know how much impact the Nordic buyout is going to have, if any, but we’ll see. but V are going to be in trouble if they dont mix things up and i think they know it.

It is encouraged that you only stay for two nights so others do not think you’re squatting in the area. Some areas also have exceptions which you need to take note of.

If you love camping and want to really save on that budget, go on right ahead.

CHEAP EATS

One tip we discovered about saving on food in Scandinavia is simply to cook most of your meals. Groceries are not too expensive and budget supermarkets can be found easily in major cities. All you need is a kitchen.

Even if you don’t have access to a kitchen, many travellers advised on putting together simple sandwiches which do not require cooking.

NORWAY

For Norway, there are a few options for discount groceries and ingredients. Our first recommendation is Coop Prix which is a discount store chain which sells ingredients and other types of groceries.

Other popular ones are Kiwi and REMA 1000 which are basically no frills supermarket chains which would work just fine for travellers looking for basic and simple ingredients for cooking.

If you happen to travel from Copenhagen, we recommend looking for overnight cruises or boats to Oslo, Norway. They usually come very cheap and will minus one day’s spending on accommodation.

To watch the Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis, you’d have to travel as close to the Arctic Circle as possible. Unfortunately, the cities up North in Scandinavia are pretty far from the capital cities and travelling there will take a portion of your budget.

If you do want to catch a sure glimpse of Aurora Borealis, travel up as far as Bodø in Norway. Any lower and there might not be a sure chance of catching the lights. If you can afford to set aside a portion of your budget, go on right ahead.

Hey, since you said srtt was your first of the series, can I ask what made you want to go back and play the first two? And how did 1+2 feel to you having played the third one first?

i’m pretty sure i got sr2 during hte same steam summer sale that i got srtt, simply because i fell head over heels in love with the latter and desired mroe of that good saints ro content (and it was like 2.50€). sriv hadn’t even been announced yet at that point if i remember correctly and i didn’t have an xbox. honestly i hated sr2 when i first played it but it was mostly because i’d made the grave error of checking out hte fanbase which at that point was filled to the brim with screaming shitnerds circlejerking themselves into stupor over SRTT BAD SR2 GOOD. the pc port is also an absolute travesty so that definitely didn’t help, and i think it took a year for me to give it another chance

fastforward to post-gooh and i’d started getting p disillusioned with the later games while getting more and more into sr2 and just really wanted to experience the full story for reals so i got an xbox basically just to play sr1. and now.... i’m the shitnerd (although hopefully with less screaming (unless its gooh we’re talking about then screaming is Allowed because gooh is really really bad))

hii since you asked for asks i wanted to say, i tried to get into the sr reboot bc it was ~new~ but it was just so hollow. so i decided to give sr3 a chance (i got them both for free) and it's so good! i wish they would've remastered sr1 and sr2 too since their plots sound really fun. but what do you think of sr3? do you think as someone new to the sr series i should wait to fully connect with sr3 or try sr1 or 2 to fully get the sr experience?

“hollow” is a good word to describe the reboot. but truthfully i think the later games in general end up ringing pretty hollow as well.

i’m glad you enjoyed srtt! i think it can be a really fun game to play, and i think it had a lot of potential and brought a lot of interesting ideas to the table even tho i’m not a huge fan of its execution. there’s a lot i still absolutely love about that game tho, in particular i adore several of the new characters. i truly love a lot of the ideas srtt had. for me it’s just that i see srtt as more of a…good foundation for me to rework things. i follow my own canon on here that rewrites pretty much everything from srtt-onwards if that gives you any indication of where i stand, w sriv in particular being completely rewritten from the ground-up.

if you spend any amount of time on my blog i think you’ll know right away where my bias lies, and i will always recommend ppl go play the first two games. sr1 in particular is everything to me. one of my favorite games of all time and i’ll never shut up about it. the themes, the storylines, the characters, the graphics, the music, everything about it.

w all that said tho, i think it’s really up to you and how you like to play/what you liked about srtt the most. if you’re interested in the characters and larger worldbuilding, i highly recommend going back and playing sr1 and sr2 to get the full scope of things. if you’re more into the absurdity/humor and crazy gameplay without much interest in the larger world/story, you might enjoy sriv and gooh.

sr1 and sr2 are just incredible tho and i think you’ll find the sincerity you’re looking for w those two, especially if the writing of the reboot left you feeling particularly empty.

IDK if you've played Agents Of Mayhem but its the game after GooH.

Kenzie codename: SafeWord is a dlc character as well as Gat, i just haven't unlocked him yet from doing his storyline.

i know about agents of mayhem! never played it, tbh it’s not really my type of game. i like that pierce, johnny, kinzie, and oleg are characters in it tho i think that’s cool. and the general style of the game is pretty nice. every time i’ve seen it around it goes for super cheap so maybe one day i’ll pick it up and give it a shot.

Your 50s Dane is soo cool, also opinion on gooh? GOOH despite being a hated and weied spinoff had those cool wings and its concept fascinated me but the activity grinding, the references in Fraud missions and them themselves, the music getting muted after you jack a car plus how unbelievably quick you can complete it is very meh but at least it has identity unlike SRIV

i can’t bring myself to fully hate GooH because i thought parts of it were just so campy that it really did get a smile out of me. like the musical number was so fucking funny. i can appreciate its more clear identity comparatively, but all that said i think the repetitive gameplay and grinding really drags it down so overall it’s. not great to me. but similar to sriv it has some really good ideas that i wish were used better.

like ok. i love dane coming back and having him be central to the plot. super fun. i wish they cut out the stuff with the historical figures and instead used other old characters like viola and kiki; like dex’s return REALLY frustrates me because they got his old voice actor back and it really feels like they wanted to do more with him. i wish he had an actual model and wasn’t just a fucking. husk with a hat. have him be one of the people that helps along with the twins. or something. it would’ve been really funny for johnny and dex to have to team up again and butt heads like old times while kinzie and dane just watch. so much of GooH felt like it could’ve been a nice callback to the older games but felt more like a jab more often than not, even if that wasn’t the intention😭 but i will say if nothing else, i really, really love how hell itself looks. it’s genuinely so cool.

Fuck it, I’ll answer all of them.

1. My Boss prefers to keep his real name and pre-Saints life behind. As far as he’s concerned, his life truly started once he was caught in the crossfire of the Carnales, Rollerz and Vice Kings in the SR1 opening cutscene.

2. Saints Row 1 and 2 are canon to my Boss’ story. SRTT is some Hollywood hack’s script for a movie about the Saints. Saints Row IV and Gooh is fanfiction by weirdos who thirst after criminals and killers and ship real people.

3. Probably dabbled in small time drug dealing. Easier to sell drugs without talking than being silent in “real” jobs.

4. He saw Julius as a father figure, Troy as the cool older brother, Johnny as the badass brother and Dex as the smart brother. Had a crush on Lin. Loathes Donny not only for not lifting a finger to save Lin, but because how much he hates cowards. By SR2, he and Johnny are like brothers, Shaundi is like a sister and Pierce is the friend he secretly respects, but likes to fuck with and get under his skin.

5. Born and bred in Stilwater.

6. I see Playa being in his early to mid twenties or at the least aged 18-19 in SR1.

7. No pairings. Has trouble connecting with people on a romantic level after the events of SR2. Probably has fuck buddies that he’s on good terms with, but no romantic relationship

8. Was somewhat attracted to Samantha but never acted on it or showed it. Had a massive crush on Lin. Her death hit him hard and was the beginning of his dark turn.

9. No family outside. Cut ties with them when he came of age.

10. He went from a loyal grunt who saw Julius as a father figure to a cynical, ruthless, teetering on paranoia, strong and charismatic gang leader whose main drive is his rage at the world for betraying him.

11. We both like 80′s music.

12. He is about as different from me in personality as he can get.

13. He’s a straight male but isn’t embarrassed compliment another man’s attractiveness.

14. Male Voice 1 from SR2 aka thick English accent voice. Best voice in the franchise.

15. The idea that Boss was “too scared to talk back then”. I like to think he was really embarrassed about his English accent, especially since its not really “gangsta”. So he fakes an American accent in the first game.

16. I try to include as much of in-game tomfoolery, lore and shenanigans as possible.

17. If SRIV was canon to my boss, the most likely romance, with how its portrayed, would probably be Shaundi. Yes, I’m a vanilla straight guy. Sue me.

18. Johnny Gat is his best friend, and he considered Dex a close second before his betrayal. He was also fond of Chicken Ned and Samantha.

19. He favors the katana as far as melee weapons go, because he views it as an exotic weapons and the fact that he gets an ego boost because he beat Jyunichi at his own game

20. In-game tats only, all Saints related.

21. He sees the lieutenants as equals. He’d also expect them to either leads the Saints together or figure out who the new leader is, should anything happen to Boss.
