Day 13 - Tofino to Victoria
It wasn’t the best start to the day when I discovered there had been a suncream explosion in one of my bags, but after a quick clean up and some eggy bread coated in maple syrup (sorry heart) I was back on track. We had a fair amount of miles to cover before we reached Victoria, so off we went making a few stops along the way, but nothing major of note. Other than to ‘Old Town Bakery’ where I got a sarny for lunch and G opted for a cinnamon bun the size of her head. She did share a bit of it with me, but it was so tasty I have no doubt she could have forced it down on her own! We also went to a visitor centre and by the time we realised there was a more interesting discovery centre across the road it was almost time to go! Google Maps informed us there was a bit of traffic on our route, so we wouldn’t be getting to Victoria as early as planned.
But before we could head to Victoria, we had to go pitch up our tents. I didn’t catch the official name but I’d hazard a guess at Redneck Camp Site. Some of our party weren’t all that impressed with the facilities, but as a novice camper I was happy for somewhere to crash for the night! We were given half an hour to get our tents up and be back on the bus. There were several outfit changes and make up bags flying around and that was just me! By the time we arrived in Victoria it was too late to visit the museum, which G was most disappointed about, but we couldn’t have got here any quicker, so it’s more an issue with the itinerary and will be reported in the feedback I’m sure! There was a lot of activity around the fisherman’s wharf, including a live band and a bit of pow wow for the local ‘American’ football team, the British Columbia Lions.
Instead of wallowing in our grief at the lack of culture we had planned to absorb, we went for a walk around the park, which may not have been as informative, but had beauty and charm of its own. There were totem polls, patches of plush grass for chilling out, lakes and fountains, lots of vibrant flower beds and exotic plants, various sporting activities and even peacocks and black squirrels. We opted for a trail that took us as far as the beach front via the world’s tallest totem pole - wouldn’t have seen that in the museum! We headed back via some of the tackier souvenir shops we’ve seen out here until Mikaela mentioned one that contained items made from local businesses, in which Georgie picked up some stickers for her journal.
We rendezvoused at a restaurant by the name of Frankie’s Modern Diner, which had an excellent selection on offer as well as good Whitehouse size portions (like most of the places we’ve eaten at to be fair!) Their only downfall was the lack of apple cider! I opted for a bbq chicken burger and upgraded the sides to poutine (the best I’ve had so far I think, sorry Chief!) and G went for Parmesan chicken with a fettuccini in a cream sauce and vegetables (and very nice it was too she tells me!) As this was to be our final dinner we presented Megan with a thank you card and a combined tip from all of us, which should be enough for a new pair of crocs!
Despite it being our last night the spirits were high as we went for a little stroll around the wharf to take a few sunset photos and then a group picture over by the Canada sign, which wasn’t as easy as it sounds! Firstly lots of people are taking pictures so you have to wait for your chance to jump in, secondly the sign is lit up, meaning those stood around it or in front of it may be blurred out depending on the phone and who’s taking the photo! After a bit of trial and error we eventually got one that was half decent, but I think the crap ones are far better for comical effect!
Whilst waiting for Little Fingers to attend a little business (after some how demolishing a huge sea food linguine) we were approached by a gentleman from Guernsey no less as he recognised a couple of British accents coming from our direction. It turns out he was there for marine research and couldn’t recommend the BC museum enough (salt in the wound!) saying it was even much better than the Natural History museum! After pulling Georgie back from hearing any more about the museum that never was, we jumped back in the minibus and headed back to Redneck Campsite, for a final sleep in our tents!
Georgie’s highlight of the day: Cinnamon bun and the flowers in the park!

So I just saw your post about ThunderBay location and I just wanted to add a silly thought. So Im from Canada (Quebec, Montreal more specifically). I think you should look at the map of Montreal, it'll be easier for you to see a bit more clearly where Thunderbay could be in the US. Montreal is an island (surrounded by a body of water), but still within the province of Quebec, it reminds me of Meridian City. The closest town to Montreal is Laval, which is a smaller town (20 min drive from Montreal), it reminds me of the distance between Thunderbay and Meridian. In Corrupt they could go back and forth between the two locations really "quickly". It's basically the same for Montreal and Laval. There are about 4 million people living in Montreal. Laval is not really a small town (about 49,000), but the distance between the two always reminded me of Thunderbay and Meridian City.
There's also this neighborhood in Montreal, named Westmount. Basically, all of the really wealthy people on the island live there. About 20,000 people, which is still a lot for Thunderbay, but the aesthetic of Thunderbay always screamed Westmount when I was reading the series.
Anyway just a thought, and your blog is amazing
Love you
Ahh, thank you. Happy you’re enjoying the blog!
This is the exact type of response I was hoping for. I didn’t even think to expand outside of New England. Since people often ask where I think Thunder Bay would be located, I was trying to figure it out geographically.
Aesthetically is another matter.
Montreal fits exactly how I imagined Meridian. I still think Thunder Bay is probably farther, since in Corrupt when they burned Rika’s home down, and she was racing back to see if her mom was okay, it took her a little over an hour. Other times, they note it took them just under an hour. With this, I estimate the travel time to be at least 45 minutes with good traffic.
However, the way Montreal and Laval are situated remind me of Meridian and Whitehall. I know technically Whitehall is just a neighborhood within Meridian, but Kai notes it's on the other side of the river that cuts through Meridian and the way Michael and the others talk is as if Kai is farther away than would be normal, so a twenty-minute drive from where the rest of them live makes sense.
And I’ve gone to google maps to bop around Westmount for a while. It is gorgeous! No matter where I dropped, it was stunning! I love all the red brick and stone. That’s one thing I was missing with the towns in Maine. Brick and stone weren’t materials that were used often in that area. But there’s something about Thunder Bay that says old stone buildings, but maybe that’s just me. Still, I can see why this area works for Thunder Bay though.
Honestly, Victoria Hall is sort of how I pictured TBP, whether that makes sense or not. But I guess either The Study or the one of Mt. Pleasant Ave work too (when I say I'm easily influenced not picky, I mean it).
Tumblr media
I’m in conflict here, though. Because while I picture stone and brick – old, historic buildings – I also picture the little seaside village main streets I’ve seeing. It’s not one consistent image in my head.
Personally, This is how I pictured Thunder Bay when reading. Lots of space, green during the spring and summer, colors in the fall. The larger houses spread out, ocean views from just about everywhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above, we can see on the right side those larger houses right on the coastline, but they're still really close to the town. That's sort of how I pictured it. This is Bar Harbor, ME. It's the one that has the cute little gazebo in the right on main street and I could really picture the burning scene as well as the one where Emmy watches Will go into Sticks, since there's a bar/restaurant right across the street.
But I don’t know. I think it’s great that we all have different ideas about what it would look like for them.

Okay so other than the xavier riddle idea that is currently on the back burner (i can talk about it more if you want idk if i've told you i know i rambled to tobi though) and the scioly fedex au that i'm currently almost done with chapter 2 of (!!!), I had yet another idea while in the shower.
So circa halloween 2020, my mom had an idea to take my grandparents and my aunt/uncle/cousin on her side on a virtual cruise because we'd done an actual cruise the two years before but then covid and yeah. We called it squishmallow cruises and well it's expanded to squishmallow tours (road trips) and squishmallow resorts (cottage) but that's not super important.
Anyway we've had 3 cruises and 1 tour since with another tour scheduled for this winter break and a vague idea of one for spring break.
Then my brain pretty much goes "hey what if you used that as a fanfic?" so it'd have a chapter for each day the kotlc crew are on the cruise/tour and like Dex (because i project on to dex) and Sophie? (Because human) or Fitz? (Because he's a nerd like that. I think he would know geography) and everybody else would be unwilling participants.
Not sure which one of our cruises i'd go with but i'd go with one i already have in my google drive instead of making another one just for this. Cause i've got
Caribbean 1 - board in Ft. lauderdale, florida-> st. Penelope (squishmallow cruises' fictional private island in the bahamas) -> us virgin islands -> st. Kitts and nevis -> turks and caicos -> at sea (tea party) -> ft. Lauderdale. Overall quality was real bad because first attempt.
Caribbean 2 - board in Ft. Lauderdale -> usvi -> st. Lucia -> curaçao -> aruba -> at sea -> ft. Lauderdale. I don't have an immediate counterpoint to this one
Alaska - board in seattle -> at sea -> juneau -> skagway -> glacier bay national park (scenic cruising) -> ketchikan -> victoria (british colombia, canada). This is where we started adding youtube videos to our slide presentations for each of our excursion and it's the one i'm probably most familiar with
Ireland (tour) - this one's gonna be too difficult to list but basically fly into shannon, stay in ennis, stay in galway, then up to giants causeway, stay just south of dublin, then down and over to killarney and stay there before going back to shannon to fly home. This one was shortened to 3 days because we didn't want to do a whole week but it certainly deserved it
(Winter break) Italy (tour) - pisa, siena (tea party), rome, panicale (squishmallow cooking channel-hey i could do something with fitz's baking), florence, and back to pisa to fly home. The only problem is that this isn't finished and i haven't lived through it that much and i don't have any slides
(Spring break...maybe) Scandinavia & baltic - copenhagen, aarhus, berlin, at sea, tallinn, helsinki, stockholm, copenhagen and go home. Unless i want until next summer for this i won't be doing this one for similar reasons as above
why i knew so much about alaska/british colombia with keefe's house location on the canon map, should make sense now. The itineraries were probably unnecessary but *shrug*
Idk if it'll happen considering the rate of the scioly au that'll only slow down more once the scioly season starts and i've got cyberpatriot starting monday so idk we'll see. It's not like someone else can take this one off my hands though. All the slides for the excursions live comfortably in my google drive and i'd rather not let my mom know that i write fanfic by sharing it with someone and the email notif pops up on her phone. I already almost broke the system by sending a word tracker google sheet to swan i'm not making that mistake again
Idk if this idea makes any sense and i haven't really given it much thought but hey we're suffering together :)
we sure are suffering together in the too-many-fic-ideas department, my dude. we are tired office workers banging our heads against our desks at how much paperwork (ideas) are piling up. but reading through this file was interesting! even if my geography-dunce brain didn't understand some of the specifics super well. (also, you're right, your extensive knowledge on british columbia and alaska makes more sense now.) also, that part about accidentally notifying your mom that you're a fic writer - mood. biiiiig mood.
my only question with this fun idea is whether or not the kotlc kids are going to all these places irl or doing virtual tours like you did. because that definitely changes up how the story plays out. i would say i'd give you ideas if you need them, but you're far more familiar with geography and virtual tours than i am. but i'm here anyway! to listen if you need me to!
