A Place I Want To Visit
Well, it’s about time.
How’s that again, DrG?
It was back on the 4th of September 1998 that Google launched. No one knew then that the upstart search engine would become not just a household word but a verb in its own right. Founded in a garage like so many other tech start-ups, it crushed its multiple competitors by simply doing the job best. It’s hard to argue with the jury of public opinion, as well as consumer choice.
So powerful is Google that it has about a 90% share of the search market, and has attracted DOJ scrutiny. But that’s a story for another time, because our focus today is that Google finally got around to doing something it should have done years ago: open a visitor center. Actually, it is more than just that, as it includes a cafe and retail store. It’s all at their corporate headquarters in Mountain View California.
And while visitors won’t be able to peak into the nerve center behind the curtain to see Googlers in their native habitat, it should suffice to at least let folks feel like they are welcome at the brand that has become so deeply entrenched in everyone’s lives.
Who knows, people may also leave money. Those shiny new phones, door bells, and digital home assistants may be hard to resist.
Now please know that I am not saying Google should plunge into retail. Actually, last year it opened a store in New York City, so its big toe is already in those waters. But Google knows nothing about retail, unlike Apple, which has long been a symbol of marketing success in that arena. There’s always a crowd inside an Apple Store. Microsoft tried and failed to emulate Apple’s success, and I bet Google would flop similarly were it to open a slew of shops across the land.
But a Visitor Center? That’s golden. The very phrase sounds welcoming. Of course, it’s not like you’re going to meet Sergey Brin or Larry Page as they grab a coffee, but it will no doubt evoke warm fuzzies. It’s almost like going to Tupperware headquarters in Orlando, because who among us doesn’t have at least one of their bomb-proof plastic storage containers in their cabinet?
This is also a shrewd move given the DOJ investigation, even though Google swears they have had this thing cooking for a while on a back burner. It shows a level of transparency at a time when others swear Google’s opacity is evidence of their guilt. Visitors may not see much, but at least they see something.
As for the retail, once again I must say that whenever any company ventures into uncharted waters thinking their good name will keep them floating along merrily in the current, they better be watching for icebergs. Retail is a very different animal, and Apple was lucky to find the secret sauce and run with it. I don’t think there is anywhere near the demand for Google products that there is for Apple’s.
Here is the difference. Google is a service that happens to dabble in hardware. Apple is hardware with just a smidge of homegrown software. When you say Apple, you think of phones, laptops, ear pods, and the like. When you say Google, you think of search. It’s hard to package and sell that.
Still, next time I find myself in Silicon Valley, count me in. This will become a pop culture shrine for many, even if all they buy is a t-shirt. It will be the national park of search. Let the pros handle the real retail, and have just enough on display to satisfy visitor curiosities.
And as for Google, maybe they can keep the DOJ off their back for another 25 years.

Year in Review Goals and Accomplishments
My word for the year of 2017 is transitioning. A lot of little things happened that shaped me into the woman I am at age 25. This post will serve as a reference for the years to come for the goals I will achieve and accomplishments I have overcome.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Accomplishments:
Got awarded for top urban blog (SEO is important)
Participated in Above All Sports for Nashville bloggers
Did a sponsored post for Cars.com and Seventh Generation
Launched course, got exactly one student - will relaunch again with a better plan and copyediting
Moved to my hometown of South Florida during the winter months
Attended my first blogger award show
Networked and met new people
Consistently hosted a guest post series all year.
Published 50 new blog posts. Nowhere near my goal of 120, but it’s a step up from last year
I have been working on my social media growth as often as possible. Social Media Accomplishments:
1300+ Instagram Followers 6000+ Twitter Followers 1800+ FaceBook Followers with another 1100+ Facebook Friends (I can't believe I have been on Facebook for 10 years as of June 2017!) 200+ Pinterest Followers These goals I wrote down and accomplished! The power of planning, strategizing, and speaking it into existence!
Personal accomplishments:
Procrastination - it wasn’t until my laptop was stolen out of my car that I had a wake-up call on just how much procrastination was affecting me negatively. Self Care - I have been vegan for a good 30 days which was a first for me. It’s also easier for me to say no to the things that don’t make me happy, don’t make me money, or don’t make me a better woman, partner, and businesswoman. This year I’ve been told many times that I am a good woman. It only motivates me to be an even better woman next year.
Personal and Business Goals for next year:
I will become a six-figure-aire by touching millions of lives. I will have seven streams of income including affiliate/sponsorships, book publishing, online courses, workshops and seminars, five new social media marketing clients every on 90 days on a recurring basis, photoshoots, which will all be aligned in my digital marketing agency. I will also be migrating over to the podcast world. As a result, it will reduce the stress on my husband as I also receive my dream car of a Lexus and my dream house of at least 2,000 sq ft 3 bedroom, 2.5 baths, 2 car garage, backyard and upstairs porch.
Be better organized - I am subscribed to so many platforms. Now I just need to focus on continuing to minimize them down to the ones I definitely utilize.
Cook Less - Ever since I have moved back to South Florida, I can understand why people eat out so much, it’s much more convenient. Now I just need to be able to make and maintain a budget for it.
Of course, I’m not going to exclude writing things down in a journal. Sure sharing things here and in Google Docs and in these respective apps help me to be accountable, but nothing feels truer that writing it down in a physical journal.
Travel Goals:
Brazil
It was actually one of the first countries my husband said he wanted to visit. There’s a lot of culture and history in Rio De Janeiro. A couple of my favorite Black travel bloggers have shown me that. I cannot wait to witness the beauty for myself especially since they are removing visa requirement for U.S. Citizens. If I can squeeze in a visit to Bahia, that would be cool too.
Caribbean (Cuba, Aruba, Barbados, Belize, Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Trinidad, Tobago) I’ve been told it is easiest to accomplish visiting a majority of these countries by cruise. Ever since Cuba has reopened its “arms” to the U.S., I have seen blogger friends take advantage of that opportunity by visiting. Cuba has a long, amazing history. As a photographer, it would be a perfect opportunity. I am especially interested in visiting the Virgin Islands because that is where my maternal grandfather is from. I look forward to learning more about that side of my ancestry.
Toronto, Canada
I have yet to visit Canada, not even as close as the Niagara Falls. Toronto is becoming a more popular music scene thanks to Drake. I am also a big fan of diversity. So I would love to see for myself just how multi-cultural it is.
Los Angeles, California BET Awards Weekend Experience, Coachella, or NBA All-Star Weekend occur there. It is full of events, history, and landmarks that I would like to see before they completely float or burn away.
San Diego, California I had the pleasure of photographing my first social worker's conference in 2016. For their 60th anniversary, they will be in San Diego. I have heard a lot about San Diego so it would be a pleasure to see it for myself.
New York City Hubby has not been yet, so I look forward to creating memories with him for my return to New York City. The Grammys and Operation Crossroads Africa 60th Anniversary Celebration are both happening in the City that doesn't sleep.
South Africa for a Photography Workshop When I traveled in 2016, I met some amazing ladies, one of them who has a side gig as a travel event planner. Together we will host the National Geographic workshop for people of color.
Visiting as many African countries as possible such as Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Lesotho, Swaziland. Participating in Yacht Week East Africa will cover The Seychelles.
Operation Crossroads Africa Group Leader Ever since I returned as a volunteer at the ripe age of 18, I knew I wanted to return as a group leader. Now, I am finally old enough to participate this summer.
United Arab Emirates, to be more specific, Dubai, Oman, Qatar.
Aside from my husband’s home country of The Gambia and the towns surrounding Larabanga, Ghana, I don’t know what it feels like to be in a predominantly Muslim country and I would like to know.
Italy I would love to return to Italy and visit Venice before it is no longer there.
With that being said, that basically sums up my remaining countries needed in order to achieve my goal of 30 countries by age 30. As of 2017, I have five years and 20 countries left.
Thanks for reading. Like this post? Please share. You may also pin this image to save for later.

When Work Anxiety & Stress Strikes, What Should We Do?
Nobody likes getting out of bed in the winter season.
A minimum of not in New England, where the air outside is so freezing, it harms to breathe. Why would anybody live someplace where it injures to breathe for two months out of the year? I don't understand.
Anyway, one especially cold Tuesday morning in February comes to mind. It was so early, it was still dark out. When I left the house, my hair froze in the perhaps 30-second dash to my cars and truck. And despite the fact that I had left the car running for 15 minutes to warm up, it was still no place near habitable. Obviously.
I was trying to enter the workplace early to crank some exercise for a client whose Google Advertising campaigns required additional TLC to get the outcomes they were searching for. I find I get a lot more done in those early a.m. hours when nobody else is in the office yet.
That may not sound like enjoyable for you, but I had been eagerly anticipating it. It feels incredible to get a half a day's worth of operate in prior to the day even starts.
Then Panic Struck Out of No place
As I was driving, my heart rate shot up, my palms started sweating, and I had a hard time to catch my breath. The anxiety of facing another demanding day with a demanding client had captured up with me.
I pulled over.
I had never ever had a problem with anxiety or high quantities of tension before.
There I sat on the side of the road, not able to stop freaking out about the insurmountable amount of work I had to get done that week. About difficult discussions I might have to have with clients. And on, and on.
I highly thought about simply turning around and saying, "Forget this. Not today. It doesn't matter. Who cares. Screw all of this. I'm going back to hibernate up until springtime lastly cuts through this miserable weather."
I had been flexing over backwards for months attempting to get my workload under control, to a point where I might breathe and in fact lean into the delight my job typically brings me. Rather, I was still crippled with stress and anxiety and asking myself:
"Why is it taking so long for me to figure it out this time around?"
"From now on, will difficult times always lead me to have a pre-dawn mental breakdown on the side of the road?"
"Why am I putting myself through this?"
"Why would anyone let it get to this point?"
"What Am I Doing with My Life?"
Have you ever asked yourself that concern? I thought I was the only one who fell under ruts of asking myself, "What am I doing? What's the point?" on an often everyday basis.
As it turns out, I'm not. All of us do.
What's even worse, however, is that-- on top of questioning whatever-- you then observe your peers around you, appearing like they understand what's going on and oh, so put together. There you are, spiraling, right? While they have everything under control. They understand precisely what's going to occur next.
They understand what their "strategy" is.
And after that there was me, who had actually never related more to Phoebe than in the last 6 months:
Sometimes this psychological spiral can feel never-ending.
Every minute of every day, you think to yourself:
"I'm not regular. I need to be doing something incorrect. Everybody else has it together, however I am various. I am defective."
When that would occur, I would breathe and tell myself, "This will pass. All of these sensations will pass."
And right away, I would feel ... relief.
Well, till I understood, "Wait, if this is all expected to pass, why the heck hasn't it in fact passed yet? Why does this anxiety keep returning?"
For me, it also appeared like it was a various sort of anxiety every day.
One day it was, "Why aren't things forming?"
The next, "Where are they in fact supposed to fall into?"
And lastly, "How do I get to the point where I feel like I suffice!.
?.!?"We've All Existed (Even If We Don't Admit It)
Certainly, you're not here to hear about a quarter-life crisis -- is that even a genuine thing?-- or listen to me panic about what's going on.
Like me, you're enthusiastic about digital sales and marketing, helping grow an organisation (either your own or somebody else's), and establishing your career. However even for those of us who really enjoy what we do and where we work, all of us come across these difficult times.
Sadly, those minutes are extremely isolating and lonely. We think nobody is feeling the way we do. So, we keep quiet, due to the fact that we don't wish to be perceived as weak or incapable by those we deal with and for.
What are we expected to do?
Maybe you're reading this wishing to hear somebody older and better state that this industry is difficult, however do not fret, you'll get through it somehow. Or, my personal favorite, "It will all pass."
Well, I'm sorry to state, I do not have an answer.
I'm quite sure that is the response-- no one understands exactly what's going to happen next. Nobody has a hint. And we should welcome that, as it's the one universal reality that links all of us.
You are not alone in this. The entire world has actually felt the precise very same method you carry out in those minutes-- lots of most likely do right now. The issue is that we do not talk about it with each other.
Things are constantly changing in our lives-- the industries we pick to work in, the technology we rely upon to do our jobs, the individuals we work with. However you can't lose sight of the fact that you have actually likewise achieved a lot. Romantically, academically, professionally, athletically, or whatever other qualifier you wish to pick.
And that's where you require to start.
Discover Something That Makes You Feel Excellent
For me, it's working with my hands.
The minute I have that "What am I finishing with my life?" sensation, I hit the garage and start putting something together. Revitalizing an old coffee table, fixing a broken chair, developing a cornhole set, or perhaps building a freaking LEGO set puts me straight.
I can inform myself, "Take a look at this. I did this. I did something efficient today."
I can look at whatever that thing is and be happy that it came from my head to my hands. I created something from nothing. Since of me, that thing exists. It's a prideful moment that helps me put things into viewpoint.
Or perhaps I'll talk with one of the kids I sponsor in the Dominican Republic.
They definitely like speaking with their buddies in America-- and that feeling of pride comes back again. I made a child's day today. It's a tip that, regardless of that periodic sensation of insignificance, I can be good and do good.
Of course, what helps me might be meaningless to you.
And what assists you may be worthless to others. It does not matter; it's significant to you, so who cares? Discover your thing. It's your life, so simply live it and don't spend it stressing over things beyond your control. Do what unwinds you and what you're passionate about, and enjoy that immense pressure dissipate.
Everybody goes through it, and frequently.
Whatever your "pick me up" is, it doesn't even require to be for you personally. I know I instantly feel better about life when I can bring something of value into another individual's life. You are important to not just yourself, however others around you.
Acknowledge the Pressure We All Feel & & Then Talk to Someone
It appears that a great deal of us put ourselves under a lots of pressure to be doing something considerable and impactful with everything we carry out in our professions -- which pressure of needing to do that all the time suffices to drive anybody crazy.
But once again, the most important thing to understand is that others are experiencing the very same fears, stress factors, and anxieties you are.
We get caught up in competition at work, to a point where we are afraid to be susceptible with each other. Colleagues stop to be good friends and people, and instead become competitors in a struggle to advance.
Speak to them.
Others that remain in your role are the finest individuals to open to. You'll be surprised at how similar your situations are. Odds are they are or have actually gone through the specific same thing.
After that bitter cold early morning in February, I lastly talked with somebody here at EFFECT-- a man who started around the very same time as I performed in a comparable role. Over a couple of beers after work, we talked about life and our professions and what was occurring-- and quickly we recognized we were both feeling a great deal of the exact same things.
And for the very first time, I felt a weight lift-- I wasn't actually alone. While that was exactly what I required, the genuine worth of that discussion came afterward. No longer feeling isolated, I felt empowered to seek out others at IMPACT who could help me discover and develop the options I needed.
As it ended up, "they" were right. It-- whatever "it" may be for you-- will in fact pass.
It's everything about how you manage those stressful times and feelings of crippling self-doubt. So, the next time it occurs to you, stop and bring yourself back to focus by doing something that fulfills you. Talk to someone.
You're not alone. You'll make it through it. And you'll be better off when you do.

To mention that the future for (even more) linked and energy-efficient automobiles is actually bright, having said that, is an unlike pointing out that this is imminent.

Portfolio Production
Introduction
My name is Emma (Beatrice Alberghini Maltoni for my course leader and tutor); I'm a student at Greenwich University, studying Digital Film Production. As requested, this is a Factual On-line Portfolio Production about the one minute observational documentary our group shot on the 13th of November.
The aim of this Portfolio is to describe my experience of filming and working in team. We chose to focus our project on a single contributor being a mechanic who works in his own garage. I will be also reporting the analysis and general evaluation of the whole film making experience.
Research and Influences
Our working team was composed by Jose-Luis Aldridge Flores, as the director, Joe Anderson as the editor, Naser Aslam as the cameramen, Shahad Mumin as the sound man, Kishanthan Nogarajah as the marketing guy, Edvinas Pankratovas as the Writer / Researcher, and me as the producer.
Having learnt that an observational documentary is an attempt to observe lived life, or, in our case, a specific contributor, as simply and spontaneously as possible with a minimum of intervention, our group started laying down ideas for our project.
As I stated before, our working team was pretty big, since it was composed by seven people, and this didn't particularly help in the brainstorming process. Each and everybody had a different idea on who to focus the documentary on and, to be completely honest, it was hard, really hard, but somehow, we reached a mutual decision: Kebarber Shop.
For you, my dear reader, who weren't part of the decision-making, I will explain the previously cited term. “kebarber” /'kɪˈbaːbə'/ n. word that indicates a mixture of the two terms “kebab” and “barber”, which means that we yet hadn't reached a final decision. The main idea was to film a kebab shop in downtown Greenwich, near our university, but it wasn't that terrific in our minds.
We had already found interesting influences such as a documentary about the making of kebab itself and a whole show about a fried chicken shop on Channel 4 which we were going to use as a sort of inspiration for the shots.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NrNJgQuguU
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-fried-chicken-shop
We spent almost a week thinking about what to film and include in our documentary, so we asked Julie, our course tutor, to give us some words of advice. She invited us to think about our everyday life and find someone we may already know, and cast him or her as our contributor. Everyone in our group started putting forward their own ideas and what particularly caught our attention was the unconventional story of Shahad's (sound man) barber. The guy is a Mexican immigrant who just moved to London and started working in a Chinese barber shop; but our dreams shattered when we asked the owner for permission to film his employee working and he denied it.
We kept thinking about it, discussing in group and confronting our ideas, because we didn't want to film something banal or our documentary to be labeled as 'obvious and uninspiring'. We wanted something interesting and uncommon, something like an old Lithuanian lady who was a Soviet Union computer engineer, but her nephew Edvinas, our researcher, wasn't particularly happy about the idea of filming his grandma who only speaks Lithuanian and, apparently, it wouldn't have been as brilliant as it seemed to film a documentary about her, since she had no pictures or videos that we could include in the documentary itself. So he suggested something else: what's better than filming a retired mechanic who works in his own garage? Apparently Edvinas' neighbor; who strips down cars to transform them into sports cars. I found the idea absolutely thrilling and mind blowing as, back in Italy, I used to live near the factory of Ferrari cars.
I started my research surfing the internet about documentaries and articles which focused on the topic of mechanics, discovering a lot of interesting facts about such profession."Today's mechanics are not the mechanics of five years ago. The training for auto technicians today is incredible. The industry is moving extremely fast with technology, and so is the ongoing and advanced training that our mechanics are engaged in" said Marc Cannon (senior vice president, AutoNation, a retailer of new cars, trucks and SUVs, with 18 store locations in Houston) and many other experts in the field, so, being the producer, I wanted to explore the other side of it and be able to show what Terry, our contributor, can do by himself, with his own equipment and without the help of any sort of new technology.
Doing my research through YouTube, trying to find documentaries related to our topic, I realized that the majority of the projects that can be found online deal with mechanics in order to talk about racing cars. As this “How To Build A Super Car (McLaren Documentary)” shows.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KTATXWICKU
The profession of mechanic is more than that, at least that's my opinion. I watched an incredibly huge amount of documentaries about this job and I found out that from 2018 both mechanics and electrical mechanics have to convey in one singular profession, this occupation being the mechatronic. The more I found out about it, the more I wanted to focus all of my energy and thoughts in realizing the best (as far as I'm concerned) documentary about a mechanic of all times.
The idea of showing the process of making something start to finish came from a short documentary we watched during seminars; it was about a woman named Eleanor, Londoner #230, who creates very interesting pieces of art... from Play Doh. She reproduces famous, and non, pictures using this unusual material that we all thought was for kids, stuck in the past; we obviously wanted to show the making of cars, and not Play Doh pictures, but the initial idea was the same. We were going to show something from the past, as the profession of mechanic is decaying nowadays, because they all are being replaced by machines, but it still is, in some way, relevant in the present. Our contributor, Terry, somehow, manages to keep his profession alive doing something that appeals people nowadays. I mean, who doesn't love sports cars? I do, even if I don't know a single thing about them.
Back to our documentary now. So, as I'm investing money in this project (theoretically since we don't pay our contributor and we were, somehow, able to steal some cookies from our researcher's cupboard) I wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing and remarkable.
As I previously stated, I was thrilled about the idea of including sports cars in our documentary as I lived near Enzo Ferrari's cars factory, so I kept wondering how I could give my personal touch to it. I wanted to know more about Ferrari and more about Terry as well; the aim of this project was to depict the process of making cars just as well as the history behind the place and the contributor himself. For this particular reason I've done my research trying not only to focus on the making off of sports cars, but also on the passion behind it. All of the articles I've read about Ferrari depict him as a passionate man: “Non si può descrivere la passione, la si può solo vivere”, as he said, which translates into “passion can't be described, it can only be lived”.
http://auto.ferrari.com/it_IT/corporate/azienda/storia/enzo-ferrari/
So I wanted to do the same with our contributor, show his passion and hard work. Willing to find the beat way to show it I watched a movie which focuses on Ferrari's life and work ethic, which shows how he became who he is now, a legend.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSN9mRavSZ8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2izlSKkLCi0
My aim was to do the same thing with Terry, depict him as a sort of a living legend, a hard working man who enjoys what he does but who has also other passions.
Talking with Terry I discovered that he is passionate about music and has a few friends who sometimes he jams with. I decided to include that in my documentary, together with his profession as well, to show a little bit more about him as a person; I discussed this with my director and chose to ask him a very simple question ('tell us more about yourself, did you always wanted to do this?') that led him to speak about his interests, and music, in particular.
Professional Practice
I was assigned the role of producer in this assessment, and I didn't know anything about producing a documentary. I did a little bit of research and discovered that I practically am in command of anything that's happening during preproduction, production and post-production, and I'm also responsible for it. I was terrified and honored at the same time.
Being the producer, it was up to me to complete and make Terry sign the contributor and the location agreement, in which I was helped by my writer/researcher since he lives near what we designed was the shooting location.
It was my pleasure to constantly keep in touch with my director and cameraman, as well as the editor, to ensure that they knew what they were doing. On the 11th of November we went to look around the location to see if it was suitable for filming since a technical issue had occurred the previous week as somebody sat on fire one of the two locations we were supposed to be filming in.
Since our documentary didn't require a specific script, but we wanted to go with the flow and follow the hints our contributor would have given us, it wasn't particularly necessary to sketch a storyboard; so, when we went location scouting, instead of putting down on paper the storyboard and sketch out the camera angles we wanted, we took the common decision to take pictures of them, and the elements we also wanted to include in the shots, and, in the end, it was way easier to use them and refer to them while we were shooting since everyone in the crew had a copy of them, shared in our google drive group.
Now, don't worry about that, the cars are fine, and we're safe and sound as well as I filled out an exhaustive risk assessment approved by the one and only Chris Nunn (had technical difficulties there too).
As a producer it was my responsibility to book the equipment through SiSo and pick it up on the scheduled date. I got to talk to both the sound man and the cameraman to sort out what kind of tools they needed and wanted to use. So, after visiting the location and filling out a recce that is reported in the table below, I made my booking and discussed about the equipment with the university technical team.
I planned a very thigh schedule for our filming day, which was, as I reported in the first paragraph of this portfolio, the 13th of November.
I stayed in contact with my team throughout a Whatsapp group chat to ensure everyone was on time. On the shooting day we got there to pick up the resources we asked for, but the absence of the technical team in the basement caused an approximately 40 minutes delay on our work schedule. Regardless to say, we had a small inconvenience, but we were prepared even for that, since I assumed we could have had some sort of situation.
Once we had arrived to the shooting location, being Terry's garage, I got to know from our cameraman that the camera we were given was not the one we asked for. There should have been no problems at all if it wasn't for the fact that the camera the technical team gave us could not support an SD Card, but needed, instead, an adapter. Luckily we had one of our cameras as a backup, in case something went wrong, and in fact it did go wrong since we were prepared to use another piece of equipment, but the cameraman was good enough to be able to ace the shots with what he had at his disposal.
For the four hours of the shooting I was constantly discussing with my crew about what type of shots we wanted and how to take them properly. I helped out the sound man and told him how to position the microphone in order to get a quite neat recording, without any background noise. Since, as I previously stated, the contributor likes music, and he has a small radio he always keeps on when he is working, I told my editor it would be nice to include a hint of music in the final product of the documentary, just to show a little bit more of his artistic side. We then proceeded to record a few minutes of room sounds in order to give continuity during the post production process; we even managed to record some birds cheeping in the background, as I'd like to portrait Terry not just as a mechanic but as an interesting character who enjoys music and nature in all its beauty.
However, even though we managed to record birds, the most interesting part came when the camera was turned off. Our contributor started talking about what he is really interested in, extraterrestrails and UFOs; but unluckily, as I said at the beginning of this paragraph, we didn’t manage to capture this moment on camera. Maybe we’ll focus on this for a future project.
Here are some backstage pictures:
Analysis & Evaluation
Despite a few issues the shooting was absolutely fine. We got what we wished for and more. The shots we wanted required a few takes but it all went well. We were even offered a cup of tea by our lovely contributor.
I am not able to show the final video, yet, but I will link it in one of the next posts, when the editing is completed.
I can say that I am highly satisfied with the shots we were able to take and the overall team work. Considering we didn't have much time and we struggled a lot in the pre-production process, we were really organized during the production of this documentary. All of the crew was well prepared to face even the major inconveniences and we all helped each others throughout the whole film making process.
The footage we have looks a little bit shaky but nothing that can't be fixed in post-production. My hopes for the final product are for it to reflect the contributor's personality and show his working methods. I'd love our documentary to inspire people to do what they're passionate about and do it with enthusiasm everyday, like Terry.
As we've learned in class, “observational documentaries tend to simply observe, allowing viewers to reach whatever conclusions they may deduce” (Chris Nunn), so that's what I want from our final product. For it to show people what they want to know and to feed their curiosity, but at the same time to leave a mark on them, 7 marks in particular, the marks of my crew.
I think we worked well as a group, despite the fact that in the beginning and a few times later on, it was usual to miss one or two members since we are pretty busy students. I wasn't honestly convinced that we could make it the way we wanted from the start, but we worked hard on it and we'll continue to do that during the post-production process. We should have had the courage to speak up from the first seminar and not be afraid to speak our minds, I, in the first place, struggled a lot with that, but I managed to overcome my fear and give the best contribution to the group work I possibly could.
I'd like to conclude this portfolio saying that we could have done better, each one of us could have done a better job, but we were inexperienced, a word that I can't say anymore now. We worked together for just a little bit more than a month and I'm proud to say that I saw the members of my crew grow in their respective roles, we grew as a group, helping each others out to obtain what we wanted (hopefully).

Are Voice Assistants Like Alexa Making Your Car Less Secure?
–
Amazon’s wildly popular voice assistant, Alexa, is making her debut in several cars this year. But as seductive and convenient as many consumers have found her in the living room, Alexa could open up a Pandora’s box of potential risks in the automotive realm.
–
Numerous automakers, including BMW, Hyundai, and Ford, and telematics firms, including Inrix, are rolling out Alexa skills. With just a few spoken commands, owners can check the fuel and charge levels of their cars from their Barcaloungers.
–
Hyundai started the trend last fall, announcing that it would connect cars to Alexa via the company’s Blue Link app, enabling owners to issue commands from home, such as “Alexa, ask Blue Link to start my Santa Fe.”
–
–
“
–
“Someone can’t just shout from outside to your Echo -and unlock your car.” – Dave Hatton, Ford –
–
”
–
–
Since then, Ford has added to Alexa’s skill set. Owners of 2017 Fusion Energi sedans, for example, can use their Echo or Tap, which are both Alexa devices sold by Amazon, to trigger home-to-car features, said Dave Hatton, manager of mobile applications for connected vehicles at Ford. Without rising from their beanbag chairs, drivers can start or stop their cars, unlock or lock doors, and ask for information such as fuel levels and battery range.
–
And that’s just the beginning.
–
“We want to make it something much cooler than just stopping and starting your car,” explained Brian McGarvey, senior director of business development at Inrix. So the company is integrating Alexa with its host of navigation, traffic, and app management software.
–
Indeed, the vehicular potential of Alexa looks nearly limitless, from EV power management to control over autonomous vehicles. In the future, designers expect you’ll be able to ask Alexa to summon your self-driving car from the garage to come and fetch you. There’s also the potential for coordinating smart cars and smart homes.
–
–
Technology companies continue to throw everything from smart door locks to remote-controlled Crock-Pots into the marketplace, but coordinating such gadgets has been an elusive goal—until Amazon’s Alexa came along. Consumers have embraced Alexa’s voice-activated “skills,” which are essentially preset functions. According to a recent survey by Parks Associates, 55 percent of U.S. households now would prefer to use voice controls to manage smart home and entertainment devices.
–
Could the same become true for the American automobile?
–
“Consumers already see Alexa as not only convenient but as an enjoyable way to control devices around the home,” said Kevin Kraus, director of product management at lockmaker Yale. The company recently made its Z-Wave Touchscreen Deadbolt door lock compatible with Amazon’s voice assistant. “Alexa offers more efficient and effective control,” said Kraus. Connecting it to the car and, in turn, connecting the car to the Internet of Things is the next logical step.
–
As you turn down your street, you could ask Alexa to preheat the oven, open the back door to let the dog out, and tune your Sonos smart speaker in the kitchen to the Pandora channel you’re currently listening to in the car. In the morning, while sipping your fair-trade coffee, you might ask Alexa for the quickest way to the Staples Center and have the directions automatically sent to the car. Once you’re behind the wheel, not only would the navigation engage automatically, but Alexa would remind you to pick up almond milk (based on your to-do list) and then start reading aloud the Audible book you were listening to last night.
–
Ford CEO Mark Fields (right) and Greg Hart, vice president of Amazon Echo and Alexa Voice Services, at CES 2016.
–
–
But is there a dark side to the Alexa-enabled car of the future?
–
One can just as easily imagine teenagers pranking their parents by starting the car in the middle of the night while it’s parked in the garage (creating potentially worrisome concentrations of carbon monoxide) or opening the minivan’s windows when the vehicle is parked outside in a thunderstorm.
–
Worse, like something out of a Stephen King novel, imagine eavesdropping thieves taking control of your autonomous car (“Alexa, have Christine leave the garage and pick me up at the 7-Eleven”). Without so much as breaking a window or scratching the paint, burglars could simply ask Alexa to open the doors to extract any valuables inside.
–
Although such scenarios may sound far-fetched, Alexa does not yet have built-in security features. Alexa cannot perform voiceprint analysis, for example, so it cannot tell the difference between your voice, your daughter’s voice, and that of a stranger. Theoretically, anyone within earshot of a connected Alexa Echo or Tap could trigger any skills the owner had enabled.
–
Automakers and technology firms acknowledge there are risks and have taken some initial steps to mitigate the potential for Alexa abuse. One approach is simply to limit her powers. At the BMW Group Technology Offices in Mountain View, California, Dirk Rossberg acknowledged there are security issues. So to obviate the problem, Alexa commands will be limited to a subset of what’s already enabled on BMW’s smartphone app, according to Rossberg. You will be able to lock a 2017 BMW 5-series with voice commands, for example, but not unlock it.
–
–
Yale’s Kraus similarly noted that his company isn’t giving Alexa unfettered freedom. Using a custom skill that works with smart devices, homeowners can use the voice assistant to lock Yale’s Z-Wave Touchscreen Deadbolt—but not unlock it.
–
“And someone can’t just shout from outside to your Echo and unlock your car,” said Ford’s Hatton. “You have to have a PIN, so we did build in some precautions.” And there are other existing restrictions, such as a time limit on how long a remotely started car will run before it shuts itself off.
–
Of course, mischievous family members or friends could remember your spoken PIN and still pull a prank or two. However, Hatton pointed out that such cases aren’t dissimilar to someone simply stealing your key fob.
–
Furthermore, unlike Google Voice or Siri, Alexa is not a full-fledged natural-language speech-recognition program. She only understands specific commands. Ask Alexa when the next Formula 1 race is, and she’s stymied, even though the most rudimentary search engine can deliver the answer in milliseconds. This apparent weakness of Alexa is also her strength. By limiting the skills available, it improves its accuracy in recognizing specific commands—and limits the program’s vulnerability to digital break-ins.
–
–
“
–
“The next generation of cars will be a lot less self-contained and easily disabled if stolen, so what’s the incentive for a bad actor?” – Steve Grobman, McAfee –
–
”
–
–
Nevertheless, Alexa’s skills are multiplying exponentially, with thousands already enabled. Auto companies plan to add more in the near future. Both Ford and Inrix will soon offer Alexa skills from within vehicles, for example, unleashing a whole new set of features—and associated risks.
–
By the end of the year, Hatton said, drivers will be able to access grocery lists, navigation features, and other Alexa-triggered features from within some Ford vehicles. Some parents may envision it as an invitation to obnoxious kids in the back seat, allowing tweens to wreak Alexa havoc such as messing up grocery lists, turning the lights on at home, and switching from your Metallica channel to Justin Bieber. Fortunately, that’s not likely to happen. Unlike the home version of Alexa, Ford will require you to push the talk button on the steering wheel to get Alexa to listen to you in a car.
–
Of course, any passengers in the car who overhear private codes during such exchanges could theoretically break in later, but in Ford’s case, the feature is authenticated in conjunction with the smartphone, so pranksters would have to steal your phone, too. Yet Inrix, which hopes to sell its new software features to carmakers, will enable Alexa and allow her to control apps with or without a smartphone.
–
–
Both Ford’s Hatton and Inrix’s McGarvey underscore the fact that it will take some time and consumer feedback to determine what kind of Alexa apps, such as games that keep drivers alert, might be appropriate for the car. It will also be a learning curve to figure out how secure cars need to be. And there are competing voice assistants, such as Google Assistant, which Hyundai has just announced is now available on the 2018 Sonata.
–
“It’s often a matter of convenience versus security,” said Steve Grobman, chief technology officer of McAfee, which was recently spun out of Intel. Grobman pointed out that another layer of security, such as voiceprint analysis or another biometric, could be added, but that may be unnecessary: “The next generation of cars will be a lot less self-contained and easily disabled if stolen, so what’s the incentive for a bad actor?”

–
–
“Ultimately, if it’s a computer connected to the outside world,” said Yoni Heilbronn, chief marketing officer of Argus Cyber Security, which works with automakers, “nothing is going to be 100 percent secure.”
–
So given the fact that cars with connected systems are already online, the cat may already be out of the bag—with or without Alexa.

Evaluate: Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus This is What Android Became Supposed To Be
After months of waiting for Verizon to launch the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, it ultimately landed ultimate week (after some delays). The net hype for the Galaxy Nexus had basically made this device out to be the unicorn of Android, it would do and be the whole lot that everyone could have ever desired in a phone. Then when it launched, Verizon had the body of workers that Changed into now not organized, not enough inventory, and a few career hiccups to make matters greater tough. However, despite all the challenges the tool has made it’s way into the fingers of keen buyers, and bloggers and the critiques are starting to are available and anyone has their opinion. Some of the one’s evaluations are primarily based on what shoppers expected the tool to be, some are based on what buyers desired the tool to be. After two weeks with the Galaxy Nexus as our every day motive force we felt that it Was sooner or later time to throw our hat into the ring and can help you realize definitively what we our impression of the pure Google Galaxy Nexus telephone is.
Unboxing: The Verizon Galaxy Nexus comes in a plain white field (vanilla even). Within the container, itself is simple purple lining and of a route the tool itself. Accompanying the device is an 1850 batter, well-known micro-USB charger, headphones, and of course guidance manual.
Initial Impressions: Upon beginning the container you notice what you have been watching for all these many months. The Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Just looking for the tool your Preliminary effect is WOW that display screen is Big. You take it out of the field and experience it to your palms and Just can’t wait to look what is lurking beneath it’s curved outdoors.
Once you switch the tool on you’re greeted with a new boot collection, that takes A number of the queues from the Honeycomb boot sequence. The boot sequence itself shows off the skills of the First rate AMOLED display. The blacks are black, the colors are vivid and vibrant. After the booting is completed you get your first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich and the way the Android OS is going to deal with your enjoy to any extent further.
Hardware: Once you get passed the display length, and hues, the primary element you observe is Just how light the Galaxy Nexus is to your hands. it is no longer mild in a reasonably-priced feeling way, But in an I can’t believe how mild This is in my arms. The smartphone additionally fits on your hand higher than you will assume, knowing that it has a 4.sixty five” display screen I used to be watching for it to experience huge and awkward, However, while not having to have area for hard keys the cellphone isn’t larger than it desires to be and the curved layout makes it feel Just right within the hand.
The display screen and weight of the telephone are Simply two elements of the phone that make up a tool that appears like Samsungs designers went above and beyond to supply a Hardware experience that hasn’t been seen or felt before. The Body:
There are easy difficult buttons on the sides of the tool, at the left aspect the usual quantity rocker, and the right has the energy / standby button. The lowest of the device has the Micro-USB port and the headphone jack, aside from that the tool is smooth lines all around the lining of the device. The Back:
The Again panel is something of a piece of discussion right now. it’s now not a traditional difficult plastic (or kevlar) guard piece, it is a flexible snap-in piece that off the device feels almost flimsy. As soon as the SIM card and battery are in location and you snap the Returned in the vicinity, it feels more strong than you can consider on its own. also, the Again has mild diamond ridges in it that hold it from feeling slippery or week. Towards the palm of your hand you know it’s there, and on your hands, you comprehend it’s not going to slip or slide out like A number of the “smooth” backs on phones like the Thunderbolt or the unique Droid.
You furthermore may have the 5MP rear facing digicam with LED flash, we’ll do a full digicam write up separately But suffice to mention that coming from the 8MP shooter in the HTC Thunderbolt I used to be initially concerned with what my pictures were going to appear to be, after per week with the cell phone, I haven’t any purpose of holding round a factor and shooting digital camera anymore.
The front:
The Front of the Galaxy Nexus is dominated through its four.sixty-five” curved glass screen. on the top of the device is the in name speaker (that is the most effective smash in the easy floor) the proximity sensor (underneath the glass) and the Front facing digicam. At The bottom of the face, hidden underneath the glass is a notification LED, which takes a piece of getting used to as it’s miles a departure from the same old pinnacle proper notification indicator. proper now it lighting up white when you get any notification (, textual content, overlooked name, and so on) However I can see developers trying their notifications to the led and with a bit of luck changing the shade, or the blink price.
Over all of the Front Simply appears sleek and elegant and Just displaying it to human beings makes them forestall and pay interest. The guts:
The Galaxy Nexus is powered with the aid of a twin-core 1.2GHz, with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. It does now not function an SD or Micro-SD card slot so there’s no choice for expandable memory. Google is betting that users will make use of cloud garage for loads of their desires, and because the Galaxy Nexus syncs well with Google Music, Google Medical doctors, and Picasa, most of your high volume needs are included.
The processor is snappy and performs responsibilities with seemingly little effort, switching through apps, displays, multitasking all feature without any hiccups. Even strolling video games just like the newly released Cutting-edge Fight 3 doesn’t take a toll on the gadgets overall performance.
One Hardware characteristic inside the device that has been getting a lot of press is the NFC chip. That is simplest the second telephone in the US to have an NFC chip constructed in (the Dash Galaxy S being the primary). Lamentably Google Wallet is not enabled on the tool and apart from Google Beam, there isn’t always something to be had to take advantage of this new addition. it is going to be a while before builders start constructing apps that make use of NFC due to the shortage of devices supporting it right now however the possibilities for it are countless.
Software program:
This is wherein the real splendor of the tool begins to shine, with the first flavor of Android 4.zero Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). the whole thing looks like This is what Google intended while the first of all released Android. Gone are the greens that have accompanied Android considering release and income the new softer blue that Simply makes it sense more inviting. The responsiveness of the Software is implausible, some if This is thanks to the twin-center 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM, however the Software program itself Simply feels greater stable and greater labored out than previous versions of Android even Honeycomb.
ICS has made the texture and use of Android more intuitive and cleaner, without taking away any of the abilities or “energy” that users have had from the start. Switching thru monitors and apps are accomplished by way of swiping. Shifting and uninstalling apps works the same as on different Android versions, However, now you could organization apps together into folders by using definitely dropping them on the pinnacle of each other. Within folders, you can re-set up apps as you would like and have interaction with apps, but the folder floats over the home screen, you still realize wherein you’re and also you don’t sense like you’re diving too deep to get to something.
Individual apps open fast and you could manage the apps which you have strolling at any time through clicking on the menu button. This pulls up a faceted bar that indicates all of your latest and strolling packages just like the experience on Honeycomb. From this sidebar, you may transfer among apps easily or near them with the aid of truly swiping them. The capacity to shut apps from Inside this sidebar is a new and very welcome addition to ICS, I can’t tell you how frequently on Honeycomb I saw an app and Just desired to shut it, But could not.
additionally knowing that your device is going to be driven updates from Google so that you’re going to be on the modern-day and finest builds for as a minimum twelve months makes it that a lot sweeter.
real World Utilization:
What most of the people need to recognize is “have to I purchase the Verizon Galaxy Nexus” and one of the foremost questions they have is “what approximately the battery existence” nicely I’ve been the usage of the tool as my day by day motive force for a week now and felt I could simply solution those questions. First and foremost in case you’re inside the market for a brand new cell phone or improve eligible I endorse which you purchase the Galaxy Nexus without even hesitating. This device is the whole thing I used to be watching for and extra, it has made me forestall worrying if I used to be going to run out of battery existence, or if I needed to uninstall apps or root my tool to make it run smoother and faster.
Day 1: Day 1 Utilization Changed into quite a lot trendy for any new tool, Initial set up, downloading maximum used apps (Facebook, Social Scope, Reader and many others.), putting in syncing and ordinary scheduled occasions. Like any new devices, the battery came with a roughly forty% price to get commenced, and you could see from the display screen pictures below the way it completed.
Day 2: Day 2 Usage got a touch more excessive, loads extra app use, net browsing, essentially putting the tool through the paces to look what it could do. Battery Utilization Became higher than Day 1 But it still wasn’t extraordinary.
Day 3: Day 3 Changed into extra of fashionable Usage, calls, emails, browsing, app use, downloading apps and extra tweaks to settings. Battery use with the tool switching automatically between 3G/4G and utilizing WiFi when needed Became pretty superb particularly thinking about the display and the processor.
Day four: Day four persevered with trendy use and no real adjustments to settings. Again utilizing well known 3G/4G placing with the tool mechanically detecting the strongest signal and using WiFi whilst wished.
Day five: Day five we ran into a bit of a hiccup with Google Currents, it Became continuously walking and continuously trying to sync and live active, it used plenty of battery and put a big drain on the tool. As soon as Currents Was un-installed the entirety turned Back to normal and we experience cozy with the battery life. We’re seeing 14 hours of battery existence on a normal basis with standard d Usage.
Overall Impressions: My Overall impact of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is that That is the whole lot that Google intended Android to be. The Hardware is first-rate, light, and responsive. The OS, Ice Cream Sandwich is fluid and smooth it is intuitive and consumer pleasant extra patron-facing than any other version of Android to date and really takes the fight to Apple in terms of simplicity and “Simply working.”
