goodbyemotel: Live in 4D
From the land down under to the city that never sleeps, goodbyemotel has managed to stake legitimate claims in the musical soundscapes of their hometown in Australia and their home away from home, New York City. One break came when their music was picked up for a Chrysler advertisement that aired in Australia and not long after, the band was in the living room with millions of television viewers as their music aired during the show Gossip Girl. Things seemed to be lining up well and moving quickly, however in the music business nothing comes easy nor without complications. This is an important lesson that the band learned shortly after earning a showcase spot at the 2011 CMJ Music Festival. Just two weeks before the showcase they found themselves lacking a drummer but given their drive to make it, they scrambled and made the situation work; they played the showcase with session players and were invited back the subsequent years.
Fast forward to 2014 and the band finds themselves in a productive space, with their creativity flourishing. They wrapped up work on their latest effort If, with the help of some pretty big industry names and somehow found time to develop a very unique 4D stage show. Producer Kevin Killen (U2, Bush) and Engineer Ken Thomas (David Bowie, Sigur Rios) were brought into the studio to pitch in behind the scenes whie David Bowie guitarist, Gerry Leonard contributed with his guitar; additionally, the album artwork was designed by longtime Pink Floyd artist Storm Thorgerson. With so much to do in such little time its amazing that the band has time to think, let alone sit around and answer questions for an interview. With that said, we here at DEVISE Magazine are humbled and thankful for the time goodbyemotel spent on us to do just that. So, sit back and take a minute to get to know drummer Paul Amorese, singer/guitarist Gustaf Sjodin Enstrom, guitarist Scott Pioro, Moog synth/bass guitarist Tom Marks and keyboardist Dave Schmidt as we discuss all things goodbyemotel.
In regards to the “creative process”, can you explain a bit about how you guys tackle the process. Where does the initial spark of inspiration come from, if there is indeed a common place so to speak?
We really don’t have a clear “creative process” when it comes to writing our music. Sometimes one of us will have an idea that we all then refine together, then other times a song will evolve out of an organic jam session in rehearsal. I guess we get inspiration from everywhere. We love film and art so I guess we enjoy those themes in music.
Is one person typically the song writer (lyrics) and someone else tackles the music, or does each member write song lyrics and or music at times?
We like to all right together so that each song represents the band as a whole. So if a band member does have a sketch or an idea, we don’t like to let that idea get too far down the road and it not feel like everyones song. We all chime in a bit with lyrics which can be a hard slog, but ultimately our lead singer Gustaf has to identify with the lyrics as he is the one who has to win audiences over with his delivery. We like to think our sound is a result of what each band member brings to the band with their instrument.
goodbyemotel’s 4D LIVE MUSIC EXPERIENCE from goodbyemotel on Vimeo.
Can you discuss a bit about how the 4D show concept came about? Is one person primarily driving that idea from conception to reality?
We came up with the concept a few years ago. We did it as a “one of” special gig that went for 45mins of purely vision projected on a screen in front of our band. At the time we had the theme ‘End Of Excess”, which was just a whole lot of themes and visuals surrounding things that scared the crap out of us. Like overpopulation, pollution, old growth forest clearing etc. We really loved what we came up with but felt like the themes were a little heavy for a 45min show. So we brought a bit more fun to the concept by making all of the vision 3D and adding synchronized lighting as well. Our themes are also a little lighter which makes for a fun visual experience with lighting, projections and music working together. I guess we all have to really sign up to the concept to make it work. We do everything ourselves and pitch in to set it up and bring it all together. Tom and Scotty really pushed the concept at the start. Dave does a lot of the video editing, Paul runs the lighting from his laptop and Gustaf puts the screen up and plugs in lights etc. It’s an big team effort to be able to set up the whole thing in 15-20mins. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a real buzz to play music in this way and really gets the blood rushing!
Some influences in music world and outside?
On our last road trip to SXSW, we enjoyed listening to the following: St Vincent, TV on the Radio, Sigur Rios, The National, Midlake, Elbow, Soul Coughing, King Missile, Crowded House amongst many others. We also had a moment driving through Memphis where we were listening to Elvis tracks from his ‘fat’ era. If became our “Fat Elvis” playlist. As a band we love films (who doesn’t really). We love to educate young Gustaf on great movie classics from the 80′s and 90′s. The list is enormous but films like Stand By Me, The Three Amigos, The Golden Child, ET, Coming to America, The Thin Red Line (anything by Terrence Malik really) etc etc.. the list goes on forever.
Before we get going, could you each talk briefly about “Gear Obsession”? This topic is going to be a recurring theme throughout DEVISE Magazine as it is interesting to see what bits of equipment musicians and artist alike just can not produce without.
Paul: The piece of gear I cannot play without is my 18 inch hi hats. The sound is washy and big with our rock sound and makes playing any other hats sound wimpy. It’s best noted in our song Mona Lisa in the verse groove.
Gustaf: My Boss DD-7 Digital Delay. This is an incredibly versatile piece of gear that I really enjoy using. The amount of experimental sounds you can make with the turn of 4 knobs is fantastic. I use it throughout our sets in different occasions for ambience and rhythmic additions.
Scott: I cant live without my E bow. It creates a very unique sound. It vibrates the strings without picking the strings and I use it for at least half our set.
Tom: My Rickenbacker bass, Moog Taurus synth. and Sony Walkman to play my cassette tapes.
Dave: I can’t do without my laptop, which contains all of my sounds! Unfortunately it’s lighter and more efficient than the 8 different analogue synths that I use during our set.

Be sure to catch goodbyemotel the next time they stop in your neck of the woods and if they bring the 4D show anywhere remotely close, get on it!
