second of all it was. a mix of things.

I spent a LOT of time working on my portfolio, and really pushing myself to do things I wasn't used to. I used a pretty wide variety of mediums, included both realism and illustration, observational and storytelling. I focused on the creativity of the process just as much as the pieces themselves.

I also had the advantage of getting to go to a precollege program at an art school over the summer, where I learned a lot of really helpful skills and where I got to do live figure drawing. However!!! Another really good way to practice figure is to just go sit down in some public place and do quick sketches of people, and if you search around a bit you might be able to find some local figure drawing classes!

I asked a LOT of people for help with reviewing my portfolio. My art teachers at school, staff at a local art studio, I went to national portfolio day, and my neighbor actually used to work in RISD admissions and had a lot of good advice.

My grades are also pretty good, I've taken several AP classes, and I did well on the SAT. Grades aren't quite as important when applying to art school but with RISD especially they can definitely help. With the commonapp stuff, I talked with my guidance counselor about what to include, and asked for help reviewing my essay. I also applied early decision.

I watched videos about accepted portfolios (tip: if looking at other art, try to look for specific aspects that make it a good portfolio piece, not just "wow that drawing is good"- what technical skills are being displayed, how much variety is there in skills shown, etc. how pleasing the piece itself looks isn't what they're looking for, they wanna see that you can do different things, in your process, etc.). I also went to some of RISD's online webinars!

Sorry for the essay lol, but I hope this has helped :) Basically- don't be afraid to ask for help, use the resources available to you, push yourself to do new things, and be prepared to have basically no free time for the fall of your senior year (this last one isn't entirely true,,,it depends on how you space stuff out but trust me with a portfolio on top of the standard application you will be BUSY.)

Allow me, if you will, a moment to go absolutely rabid over your blog and everything that goes on here. I’ve always loved history but the USA hardly likes teaching anything that isn’t American History. I’ve forgotten how much I love WORLD history, specifically the rise and fall of empires.

I’ve been smothering myself in your posts and I love it ALL. JC, Pompey, Crassus, Sulla, Octavian, Antony, Cassius, and Brutus. Wow what a mood. You don’t miss on your references or your modern AU’s and I’m over here like- I’m trying to buy whatever web comic you put out, book you write, etc.

Also, if you’d be so kind to list some material with like themes to start breaking into these topics. Preferably materials in English or translated materials.

if you really want to start on the ground floor for breaking into something, I'd recommend my personal favorite approach which is picking the figure that's most interesting to you, reading through plutarch's biography on them (free! online! in english!) and then putting their name through a jstor search and reading whatever sounds fun.

what advices would you give for someone to survive college without completely ending their mental health?

i think having hobbies (even if it was just like. giffing and watching tv. 😭) really got me through most of the worst of my uni life 😭 i also had extra-curriculars / a job at uni so i think those also helped bc it was something OTHER than studying which kinda distracted me from the stress? especially the job, bc it was a physical job, it really gave me no time or energy to think which did wonders for me bc overthinking is like my go-to 😭

See I think one of the terrible things about pressuring autistic & neurodivergent youngins to go to college right after high school is that there’s people like me who take most things at face value & didn’t realize I was supposed to be networking, going to job fairs, & other stuff I found unpleasant. I was just initially told do good in school & you’ll succeed. I did good, now, where’s that “success” at? No ones hiring & I never networked much either. Everyone wants someone with years of experience now, yet no ones willing to pay you during said experiences, in this economy no less! This is without going into the can of worms that is student debt! This doesn’t even factor in how looking or sounding a little different as a trans person can limit your employment opportunities as well & being white already makes my struggle not as bad as other folks’. This system is shit & the people running it should feel bad that it’s so shit!

-I’m finishing up my third year, but since I chose my major at the start of this year, I might need to take an extra semester to finish up my required courses

-my mental health has been pretty good lately, finals have been tough so far but I’ll survive :)

-actually currently actively working on a group project where I’m the only one doing anything, my only advice is get as much work done yourself as possible so you don’t all fail, and if you have a good teacher who would let you report that your groupmates aren’t doing any work then yeah in cases of group projects, I find it perfectly ok to tattle on people (unless they have some level of reason or excuse for why they’re ghosting everyone)

College Essays

You know when target posts back to school ads than that means our summer has officially ended. Sadly, I live in a place where usually I start school on August 1st. This year I’m actually attending university and wanted to help the future seniors or students who need help writing essays for college admissions. 

To be honest I’m going to keep this on the shorter end because I feel like there are so many others who’re more qualified to tell you about this information. 

1. Read this It is by Sharon Murchie, a high school teacher who went above and beyond for her students. I’d say read all the stories she suggested. Analyze/look over all of them by thinking “how could you write a story from that perspective?”. Find one you’re most comfortable with to work with and start writing. I’d definitely say you’re going to mess up and going to have to do some rewrites which is perfectly fine! I did that myself. 

2. Watch the word limit. Get your story over in the least amount of words as possible. The overall purpose needs to describe a significant moment in your life and who you are as a person. Don’t mind the fluffly stuff as much (and this pertains to anything that doesn’t have to do with the topic to your essay). Your introduction should be at max three sentences. You need the words for answering your topic is a very memorizing way. 

3. This is your story. Write about the people closest to you or a star you’ve never met but it all has to come back down to you! Who you are as a person and who you want to be at this school. What will you provide this school and how will you take what you’ve learned at said university and put it out in the world? Know, there are many different essays, most popular, why do you want to attend this university? Who are you? Tell us a challenge you overcame? What’s a funny story about yourself? (This was one of my topics actually). 

Why do you want to attend this uni? Be specific, look up facts and opportunities to the school you want to go to. Co-ops, undergraduate research, libraries and the ability to double major are so many good reasons you can talk so much about. Think instead of why do you want to attend this school, think what fascinates you most about this institution? What makes you so excited that on day one you need to join (a club, organization, start prepping for co-ops, or signing up for classes, or minors etc). 

Who are you? This can be formatted in so many different ways but I feel like so many of the Common App essays fall under this category. Using the New York times post above should help with writing who you are with all of the hidden messages within the story.

Slime Witch’s zine that they’re hyping up like it’s some super bold avant-garde transgressive media ™️ and they’re like the second coming of John Waters, the Marquis De Sade, Robert Mapplethorpe, Keneth Anger, and Lucifer Valentine all at the same time, even though John is not even dead. It will also (sic) “blow your tits clean off”. But it turned out to be just a collection of deliberately poorly drawn (because Underground Comix) pictures of the characters from Paw Patrol reenacting Salo and the 120 Days of Sodom for no other reason than “wouldn’t it be fucked up if… yeah I’m totally subverting innocence and making a statement and not just being a common edgelord”, and selected snippets from their MCU Thorki BNF days with the names are changed because they want people to forget that era. As if was even possible for them to ever be into something like the MCU because they’ve rebranded and are a serious transgressive ™️ artistic genius who would never stoop so low in their entire life.

Also one of Slime’s former partners is about to drop another round of Allegations about why they broke up, how they were a complete nightmare to be in a relationship with, and how Slime got both of them kicked out of the Punk house they were living in three months ago and Slime lied about getting kicked out by their parents and they just wanted to slum it a bit to make their art more “authentic”. Their dad is Anna’s boss at Lockheed and probably a huge thorn in Anna’s side in the tech support department because he still does not know that a PDF and a Word Doc are different.

Heaven forbid they ever find out that there is more to being a transgressive subversive artist than just writing edgy fanfic about the same fandoms that are the most mainstream fandoms ever at the time.

Even though we haven’t talked since at least three years before your first call out post, I’ll never forget you *******.
