The Only Place Left To Go

[“Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” It’s a quote from a Robert Frost poem. I’d never realized how true it was until now. I mean my life had been pretty decent to this point. Sure there were things that I wish I had, things I regretted, but overall I was happy up until a couple months ago. It started with the talk of  a merger or some financial business at my job. I worked at a pretty decent newspaper in a big city up north. Nothing crazy like the Chicago Tribune, the New York Post, or the Boston Globe. However, it was still a big enough deal to draw me from the Southern comforts of my hometown in News Orleans where there was already the Times-Picayune. For several years I’d worked as one of the photojournalists at the Baltimore Gazette, that was until what was left of it was acquired by the Baltimore Sun. There had been rumblings that the paper was going the same way as a previous newspaper had, the Baltimore Examiner. However, some workers had felt confident things would get settled for the better, and for some it did. 

Sadly I wasn’t one of them. The already prominent newspaper only needed so many more photographers and despite being pretty good, if I do say so myself, I was also the lowest on the totem pole. I’d been let go with a small, yet reasonable, severance package. Sure it stung that some of my friends and coworkers were lucky enough to stay on. Like my roommate who was a sports writer, Richard Espinosa. Maybe roommate wasn’t the right word for him. He was a friend, a crush, and obviously a co-worker. When I’d first moved to Baltimore we’d bonded as newbies and there was something about him that just drew me to him. For the past two years I could have sworn we were growing closer. I mean hell we moved in together… as friend, but if you knew my very religious parents, you’d know that was a big deal and one I didn’t necessarily talk over with them beforehand. Granted after a couple of years of no movement and then losing my job, I was ready for us to take the next step… I just didn’t realize those steps would be in separate directions. 

When Richard had been offered a job and I hadn’t, he insisted I not worry about the rent. That he could afford to cover me for a little while as I got back on my feet and found a new job. But finding a job in my particular field wasn’t necessarily easy, especially as newspapers across the country were downsizing as people shifted to online video media. The frustration of it all got to me and to him as well. What was a gesture of goodwill turned into a cheap shot anytime the subject of work or money was brought up. It was all about what was owed and keeping track of debts which only increased my stress of not being able to find a damn job. Until one day I came home from a miserable interview. A last ditch effort at some photography studio which had gone badly to say the least. I was out of options and not looking forward to talking to Richard about it. My feelings for him were being impacted by everything going on and I’d found myself both wishing we’d finally be more and at the same time dreading it with how he was acting. Thankfully that decision was made for me… though I still wasn’t feeling quite thankful. “Why is that?” 

My head turns toward the middle-aged woman who was sitting next to me at the truck stop diner. I’d forgotten that her simple question about where I was headed had sent me on the downward rambling spiral about my currently sad and pathetic life.] Because in the end he turned out to be a dick… no literally. His nickname was Dick. My crush had turned into an asshole as I walked into our shared apartment to find him banging one of my former coworkers who just happened to get the last spot instead of me. [My grip around my burger started tightening before I realized I was about to crush my lunch.] So yeah, suffice to say there were some heated words and a lot of yelling and some throwing too. [Leaning over as if to stage whisper to this random stranger.] His stuff, not mine obviously. After that I packed up my belongings and did the only thing I could do. 

[Feeling my face fall at the thought, eyes dropping downcast to my plate of french fries as I take another bite of burger. The woman next to me looking on eager to know exactly what it was. How to explain to this woman that at the age of 29 I was headed back to my parents’ house. That I’d be living with them because I could barely afford a place of my own and food and clothes and my car note and car insurance. The list of bills and debts causing my stress levels to rise. Being an adult was fucking hard. They never explained that to you as a kid. You rushed to grow up, only find out how much it can fucking suck. 

“Well…” The woman asked, clearly tired of waiting for me to continue.] I’m headed back home to New Orleans. See if I can’t find a job down there. This is just one of my pit stops. I’ve got another day and a half of driving. [“Well good luck to you, sweetheart.” My gaze finally looking to the woman’s plate to see she was done and had even paid already. Clearly she was just waiting for me to finish my sob story. Even though I’d still left out some highlights. Like how calling my parents to let them know I needed to come home had practically crushed my soul. That I’d be sleeping in my car overnight because I couldn’t afford to book a hotel and I’d rather sleep in my car than a dingy motel room where there were probably ax murderers hacking people up and affairs going on. 

The only solace I found in coming home was Teddy and Wendy, my two best friends since childhood. I had reached out to let them know I was coming home, but the shame behind why had stopped me from divulging the reason I was coming home to both them and my family. For now I was saying that I wanted to come home to be around my family that I hadn’t seen on a regular basis in over 3 years. After the woman left, I focused on finishing my food so I could get back on the road to the place where they’d have to take me in.]
