Internationaux de France - Preview
Actually it’s more my pre-competition rambling instead of a genuine preview.
Men
So the men’s competition here will feature the anxiously awaited Nathan vs Shoma showdown (which shouldn’t even be happening because Shoma should have medalled at Worlds, but that’s another story). I think it’s no secret that I’m rooting for Shoma, but at the same time I think it’s unlikely that he has a chance of winning this. Nathan is getting overscored to the moon and back, and Shoma himself said that he’s not in top shape yet. I still wish him good luck and hope he can at least put out two performances he’s happy with and win silver.
Another skater I really like here is Kevin Aymoz. I hope he can skate as well as he did at ACI and hopefully have a shot at the bronze medal. Also want to wish good luck to Sergei Voronov.
Ladies
Since Kaori and Wakaba both have no chance at reaching the final anymore, I just hope they can have a great competition that will be a positive experience for them. I hope they have skates they’re happy with and maybe benefit from competing without as much pressure this time. (Theoretically Kaori still has a chance to reach the final, but she’d have to win here, which means defeating both Alina and Alyona, which is pretty much impossible unless they both make major mistakes.)
Speaking of Alina and Alyona, theirs is another anticipated battle for gold. I genuinely feel that everyone (maybe including RusFed?) who thinks that Alina has the easy route to the final is underestimating Alyona Kostornaia big time (and also underestimating Rika if we’re talking about NHK Trophy). In my opinion, if both of them skate clean there should be no question about Alyona winning this. Heck, even if she didn’t have a 3A, there should be no question about her winning this. Alyona has better components and better quality on almost everything. But as we know, Alina and inflated scores go hand in hand these days, so she actually has a shot here.
I also hope the insane pressure won’t get to Alyona. Both of her training mates have won their GPs, but she’s the only one up against the reigning Olympic and World champion. That can’t be easy to handle. I really hope Alyona can have a great competition (but leave Rika’s SP WR alone please?... it’s the only one she still has and I want her to keep it a little longer...)
I also want to wish good luck to Yuna Shiraiwa and Mae-Berenice Meite!
Pairs
There’s not that much to look forward to here (this is where James/Cipres were supposed to go, isn’t it?), but I still want to wish good luck to Hase/Seegert!
I’m desperately trying to stay positive and not think of any of the insane scoring we’ll see this weekend... I swear if they score Nathan anywhere close to Yuzu last week... or if Alina somehow scores higher than Rika last week... or if they announce another stupid award show...

Otabek Altin Dominates To Win Internationaux De France
Saturday, November 24, 2018
Otabek Altin dominated the free program to win the competition by about twenty points. The Reigning Olympic Bronze Medalist skated a clean free program, scoring 198.14 – one of the highest scores of the season so far, though still short of the scores of Jean-Jacques Leroy of Canada. His overall score was 299.30, also one of the highest of the season.
“I skated well, and I am proud of that,” said the 20-year-old. “I am right where I want to be going into the Grand Prix Final next month. I know my scores are lower than JJ’s, but it’s about where you finish not where you start.” His fiancé, Yuri Plisetsky, was seen cheering on his fiancé from the stands. He will join him in the Final.
Three-time Czech National Champion Emil Nekola fell on his opening Quad Lutz and stepped out of an underrotated Quad Loop. He scored 185.76 for his free program, good for third in the free, and scored 279.63 overall. He managed to hold onto second place, though it was not the program he wanted. “I am better than this,” said the 21-year-old. “It’s okay, though. I am going to go home and get back to work, and get ready for Nationals.” Nekola will be the first alternate to the GP Final next month. “I wish everyone the best of luck, and I will be ready to go if I need to, though I hope that’s not necessary!”
Kenjirou Minami had the comeback of the entire season. In seventh place after the short, he skated in the first group of skaters – and lead throughout the next four skaters. He two-footed his Quad, but was otherwise clean. He scored a personal best score of 186.00 for a total score of 269.94. “I have a Grand Prix medal!” the 20-year-old exclaimed. “I am so happy right now. I know I can keep improving because I want to get better. I don’t want the time that Viktor and Yuuri spent on me this summer to go to waste. I know I can win my second National title, and make Yuuri proud!”
Jack Morgan of the US had a shaky free program, only scoring 175.56 and stayed in fourth place, overtaken by Minami.
The Grand Prix Final takes place in two weeks in Vancouver, Canada.

Bordeaux Marathon Race Recap
I was so nervous all day before Bordeaux. The waiting around the house, the getting ready in the afternoon, the wondering if I’d eaten enough or too much really made the run up particularly unenjoyable. It was vey different to the fitful night’s sleep and pre-marathon breakfast I experienced the first time.
To be honest I think as soon as I’d pinned my number on I felt a bit more relaxed. We did a quick warm up together and then said goodybye and good luck and made our way to our separate starting pens. Once I’d jumped over the barrier into the blue start I started thinking to myself “What on earth are you DOING? This is INSANE! You said NEVER AGAIN!”. Thankfully the gun went off pretty quick and 8 minutes later I was over the line.
The first five 5k took us across the new bridge and over to the other side of the river. There were loads of awesome warehouse projects and artists spaces with people lining the streets and cheering us on. I forced myself to take it nice and slow- around 9 minute pace- for the first few miles to gague how I felt. Then it was back over the Pont De Pierre and into central Bordeaux.
I started to pick it up a bit as we climbed out of Bordeaux and into Pessac, by this time the sun had gone down over the city and I knew I was feeling good at around 8.50. The support through the residential streets was amazing; there were loads of families out having barbecues, people having flat parties, kids holding out their hands for high fives. I literally couldnt resist and high fived a whole row of little kids as I ran along- I’ve always wanted to do that!!
Through miles 7 and 8 I felt really good pushing into the 8.45s and was having to forcibly hold myself back, smiling like an idiot all the way. Until...with mile 8 ticked off, my watch beeped and suddenly died.
I nearly stopped. I felt this awful sense of dread come over me. I nearly threw the bloody thing into the road.
I tried turning it off and restarting it but everytime it got GPS signal it reverted to the home screen. Ok, I thought, I can time when I need to drink and work out when I need to take my gels by the kilometer markers (this is France, there are no mile markers) and as long as the 4 hour pacer doesn’t over take me I’ll be ok.
Within 5 minutes I had decided that my watch dying was the best thing to have happend to me, I ran 3 awesome miles, blissfully unaware of my pace and only thinking about how I felt and soaking up the atmosphere of the race.
At mile 11 my garmin suddenly came back to life which allowed me to focus on maintaining my goal pace of 8.55- it varied between 8.45-8.55 until mile 23, the miles just seemed to tick by, my legs were just rolling on by themselves, it felt effortless and natural.
The last 5 km were hard, but not shockingly so, not unexpectedly so and as Craig said to me afterwards “If those last 5k weren’t hard it would probably mean you hadn’t pushed yourself enough up to that point”. I didn’t however experience that awful, interminable dragging feeling I experienced when I ran London, just a real struggle, but a surmountable one. A tunnel of noise carried me from the Grosse Cloche to the finish line, I had no idea what time I had run and I didn’t really care- I knew I had broken 4 hours which was what I had been working for all these months.
It turns out I crossed the finish line in 3:54:55, a 30 minute PB, which I feel immensely proud of, and contrary to last time round where I said “Never EVER again”, I just keep thinking “That was fun, when’s the next one?”

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 9 June, 2019
A limited edition version of the beautiful Saroléa Manx7, a Honda FMX 650 built for the Scram Africa event, and a rare Maserati motorcycle from the 1950s. Plus a stunning Honda CB750 Bol d’Or from France.
Honda FMX 650 by De Angelis Elaborazioni Fuel Motorcycles’ annual Scram Africa tour is all about riding classic-style scramblers in North Africa. To partake, you need either a vintage scrambler, a modern classic scrambler, or a bike customized in the scrambler style. For Giorgio De Angelis at De Angelis Elaborazioni in Italy, this custom Honda FMX 650 was just the ticket.
The FMX was a thumping supermotard that Honda made in the mid 2000s, with the same 644 cc motor as the XR650L. That means it’s tough and reliable. Giorgio’s converted his FMX from motard to enduro, adding a host of juicy upgrades along the way.
The Honda now rolls on bigger Excel hoops, with Wilbers suspension propping it up. Giorgio’s added a race transmission from KK-Bike and an Accossato cluch lever, and the Honda scrambler also wears new fenders and a pair of Arrow mufflers.
Closer inspection reveals a swapped-out fuel tank, improved lighting, tough hand guards, and a luggage net and handlebar bag for practicality. A new seat and a minimalist livery add to the utilitarian appeal. Blasting this thumper across North African sand sounds like a good day out to us. [More]
Saroléa x Mighty Machines The Saroléa Manx7 is one of the most beautiful electric motorcycles out there. Now the Belgian company has lifted its game even further with a naked version and a special edition rolled into one—the ‘N60 MM.01’.
From what we can gather, the N60 shares a basic platform with the Manx7, but sheds the fairings and superbike styling. The MM.01 is a limited series, with just 20 units on the roster. Or rather, 20 packages—the collaboration includes a suit from Café Costume, a helmet from Hedon, and a Damascus steel knife from Studio Blade.
The bike itself is stunning, with a high-end spec to match. There’s carbon fiber everywhere—from the frame and swingarm right through to the bodywork. Suspension is from Öhlins, and the brakes are from Beringer.
Saroléa claim a 20 min charge time, and a range of 330 km. The Manx7 lists power at 163 hp and torque at 450 Nm, so if the N60’s numbers are anywhere near that in the real world, it should be a fun ride. There’s no word on pricing, but we can’t imagine it’ll be cheap. [More]
Maserati Regolarità Scrambler Even though vintage Maserati motorcycles wear the same badge as the Italian marque’s automobiles, they weren’t technically made by the same company. Our friends over at Silodrome have a great history lesson on how that came about, along with a look at this ultra-rare 1956 Maserati Regolarità Scrambler.
The Regolarità is so rare, there’s little info available on the model. This one’s been fully restored, and is thought to have come from the factory in the configuration you see here. That would have included the knobby tires, high fenders and exhaust, and braced handlebars.
Maserati motorcycles used engine designs licensed from German firm DKW. So there’s a good chance that the 125 cc motor in the Regolarità would have been the same.
This Regolarità looks factory fresh, and is thought to be worth somewhere between €11,000 (S12,475) and €15,000 (S17,000). If that sounds fair to you, it’ll be up for auction soon.
Regent No.1 Regent Motorcycles is a Swedish company, launched late last year by Jonathan Åström. His concept is simple and appealing: build an electric bike, but in a vintage style. And it sure does look cute.
‘No.1’ has a Yamaha SR vibe about it, with a classic teardrop tank, twin shocks and a generously padded seat. It uses a rear hub motor, which makes between 11 and 20 hp. Range is listed at 150 km (93 miles), and the top speed at 130 kph (80 mph).
Despite the vintage looks, No.1 does have some modern tech built in. It uses regenerative braking, and has a touch screen dash with a built-in GPS. It’s available in four colours, and the company’s website also hints that it’s built with customization in mind.
It’s early days for Regent; they’re taking pre-orders right now, while also looking for investors to grow the company. Pricing is set at €9500 ($10,770), with a ten percent discount for early birds. We wish them luck—because, honestly, we’re surprised more companies aren’t making electric bikes like these. [More]
Honda CB750 Bol d’Or by Bullita We’ve lost count of how many custom CB750s we’ve seen already. So it’s always refreshing to see someone put a new spin on this iconic Honda. And this one is particularly fresh.
It’s a 1980 model, belonging to a designer named Tristan. Tristan approached Jean-Phillipe at Bullita with a proposal: the former would handle design, and the latter would do the heavy lifting. It paid off—this Honda is sharp, well balanced and kitted with sweet upgrades.
The suspension’s been overhauled with upside-down forks up front, and a mono-shock conversion at the rear. The original Comstar wheels have been ditched for spoked numbers, wrapped in modern street rubber. There’s no internal engine work; just an air-box removal and a new exhaust.
For the bodywork, Tristan wanted to maintain a clean line from front to back. The new parts were laser cut from an alloy sheet, then bent and welded into shape. A pair of projectors in a quirky housing add lighting up front, with a taillight that combines an LED strip with a Perspex fin out back. Clip-ons, rear sets and a sprinkling of Motogadget bits round things out. [More]
