I had a dream last night about a DS9 episode that doesnt exist and I dont remember the A plot but the B plot was Julian getting Worf to train him in combat and it was so good I just might have to write it
putting what I remember from the dream under the cut
it started off with Julian going to Worf and asking for his help with combat training. Worf was surprised by it, but agreed. I couldnt tell you where exactly this fell in the timeline but it felt like somewhere in season 6? camp 371 had definitely happened cause it gets mentioned. more on that later
it starts off pretty comedically cause Julian is just. very much not a fighter. Worf is constantly correcting him, and keeps knocking him on his ass. but Julian keeps getting back up, keeps trying again. this is all clearly combat training meant for a Klingon, and its obvious that Julian is struggling HARD with it, and the lessons arent really sticking so much as they are just bruising
gradually the comedic tone dropped as both Julian and Worf start to get increasingly frustrated. the others are also getting. concerned. because Worf is in a near-constant bad mood and keeps snapping at everyone, and Julian keeps healing his own injuries. so its obvious that this is now very much not healthy for either of them, but neither of them is willing to give up
it all comes to an explosive head during one of their training sessions, cause both of them are clearly bottling a lot of shit up and it all just blows up. and in the heat of the moment Worf isnt as careful as he should be, and accidentally hurts Julian pretty badly
everything's fine, of course. Julian gets patched up in the infirmary. but then him and Worf won't talk to each other and avoid each other for days. and at this point, the concerned parties intervene to see just what the fuck is up with these two
Jadzia talks to Worf. she sees right through his shit and knows that he's mad at himself. she gets him to admit that he's been furious with himself because he doesn't understand what he's doing wrong, as a teacher, that Julian hasn't improved. Julian came to him for help, and he feels he's failed him. Jadzia points out that Julian was never going to get very far on a Klingon training program. he's Human- augmented, sure, but still Human, even if he's too stubborn to admit that that might have its limitations in terms of what kind of combat he can realistically train for. she manages to get Worf to see that he hasn't failed as a teacher and he isnt horrible at it, he just needs to adjust his approach, and perhaps actually TALK to Julian about all of this. Worf isnt sure Julian will want to talk to him, certain that Julian blames him for his lack of progress and for injuring him, but Jadzia convinces him to at least try
meanwhile, Miles talks to Julian. Miles assumes Julian is mad that Worf pushed him too much, but Julian isnt. Julian's been mad at himself, blaming himself for the fact that he just cant get anything in this right. he praises Worf's teaching abilities, and blames himself entirely for being a bad student. Miles asks why Julian wanted to learn Klingon combat in the first place, since he's a doctor and not a fighter, and Julian confesses he's sick of being helpless when bad things to happen to him, and he wants to be able to defend himself. Miles suggests that he can learn to defend himself, but he doesnt necessarily need Klingon combat training to do so. he points out that Julian, as a Human, was always going to struggle with learning it. Julian insists he wants Worf to be the one to train him, and Miles says he should tell Worf that. Julian is hesitant to approach Worf, embarrassed about how he let himself get hurt and certain Worf thinks he's weak, but Miles pushes him until he agrees
Julian and Worf meet and talk. and it all gets aired out- they were mad at themselves, not each other, and its a relief for both of them to hear that. Julian admits to Worf what he did to Miles- that he wanted Klingon combat training so that he could defend himself- but he goes further and explains that he wanted Worf specifically to train him because of what happened at 371. he admires Worf's determination, his endurance, and seeing Worf handle himself the way he did, the way he kept going, he thought if he could be half that strong, he wouldnt end up being helpless again. Worf is surprised, and tells Julian he is all of those things- determined, enduring, strong- and points out how Julian lasted 5 weeks unbroken in that camp, and how in their sessions he always got back up and kept going. Worf admits to respecting Julian both as a healer and for having a warrior's spirit, and that he was honoured that Julian wanted him to be his teacher. Julian asks if Worf will still train him, then, and Worf agrees- but this time, they'll go with a training regiment more suited to Julian's abilities. they shake on it
episode ended with time clearly having passed, showing a sparring session between Worf and Julian. we see that Julian has noticeably improved and is much more confident holding his own against Worf, and even manages to knock Worf down. Julian celebrates, and Worf lets him have his moment before he sweeps his legs out from under him and brings Julian right down with him. Worf makes a crack about Julian needing to keep his guard up, and Julian just lies there laughing, and Worf even cracks a smile as we end

star trek picard episodes 1-3 thots
THE THOTS ARE BACK
So this post directly follows on from the angry freakout I had earlier this week where I live incepted myself into watching picard season 3 ride or die, because sometimes you've just got to go down to the highway and watch the car crash in person.
also, I reminded myself that I dont care about other people's star trek opinions, only my own. therefore, I needed to have star trek opinions.
here are my thots, here be spoilers
first off: gates mcfadden's face lift is fucking spectacular, the woman looks amazing. Her eye sockets are so sculpted, her cheeks are so taut, her jawline is so sharp, and yet she still looks her age. this is what growing old in the socialist utopia promises: you too can look like a woman who has not actually had to work since the early 90s. also credit to everyone looking great in their 60s, 70s and 80s.
second: jack crusher (the second??!?! how does that work anyway), is so fucking hot.
third: I went into this knowing broadly what happened in episode 1 and 2, and that episode 3 the twist is changelings, because I saw a spoiler yesterday on una mccormack's tumblr. changelings is interesting, because to do a ds9 plot in tng is bold, especially when you can't bring odo back since ya man rene audeboujournois died a few years ago. worf doesnt even mention him by name: ffs worf raffi was alive during the dominion war, she'll know who fucking odo is. he's odo.
fourth: the moment I was like, I am here for the long run was Worf's whole introduction and his everything. I think its always hard to give credit to michael dorn for being so great because he has to act stoic through SO much makeup and he just is worf, but honestly, it felt like if they'd just put the black hair on him he would have looked exactly the same as he did thirty years ago. Like they had to make his hair white just to make time have passed. The man is so well preserved, maybe he also has a very good surgeon, but I am down to believe that he just Is Like That. Damn.
five: worf is the best thing that happened to raffi, I love them together, they are the best team.
six: all of this is going to fall apart when brent spiner comes to Lore it all up, as that is obviously what was stolen from the daystrom institute alongside the portal gun.
seven: so episode 3 won me over because I had kind of forgotten how good an actor patstew is when he really gives it?? because fuck me the scene between beverly and picard where they talk about how the whole baby thing happened was so good, so subtle, so emotive. It also crucially made sense: they had tried to be together. they had failed to be together. crusher was tired of his shit, he's always been a terrible partner and it just didn't work, but then she was pregnant and ready to leave anyway, ready to move on, so just went, fine, breakup over, beverly out. Also, reminded picard that the universe keeps trying to kill him, that he'd basically killed her husband and her son, and she had no other family....thanks for the sperm donation, I'm gonna go retire and have a redo. I was already 100% team bev but now I am 200% team bev, also fuck off picard with your 'oh yeah actually I wouldn't have been my horrible abusive father fuck you for taking me at my word, my whole /r/childfree carefree bachelor attitude, how could I have known anything about myself in my early 60s, I was but a boy, we could have had it all, rolling in the deep' etc. Father and husband fuck the fuck off you traditionalist old bastard you just told us you had broken up for the FIFTH TIME.
eight: should have reserved point seven for seven herself but: SEVEN!!!! I am fucking going to do it, I'm going to write the seven of nineifesto. She is so fucking deep waters, shes been so betrayed by authority figures none of who actually give a shit about whats best for her, just for what is best for the story, she is not meant to be in starfleet ffs, she got the worst possibly mentors in janeway and picard. also seven and raffi just need to hang out with worf and tell the rest of them to fuck off.
nine: captain shaw was right and he should say it. He was having a nice time, just running his ship, doing his duty, when he gets fucking hijacked by two guys who literally are mavericks and crash ships all the time, who are manipulating seven, who MUTINIES, and they literally destroy his ship and ruin his life in the space of about 12 hours and he saw through their bullshit within 30 seconds of the 'surprise inspection' gig. justice for captain liam shaw, only sane man on the titan.
ten: look, the show is never going to stick the landing, but like all star trek, it is a journey. there are changelings, there is worf, there is raffi, there is my forthcoming 200k seven of nine fix it fic, there is so much to enjoy, and also there was the absolutely awful deaging makeup, please stop doing it, it made me feel seasick.
anyway these are my thots on yaoi kthxbye

no i care about ur tng s1 opinions !!
Well anon since you asked..... (imagine we are hiking together, lol :)
Alright... season one of TNG... well... it wasn’t great. In fact, if it was not a Star Trek show, I’m not sure I would have gotten through it at all. Now I'm not saying that I hated it, in fact there was plenty that i did actually like. But overall it just kinda boring and it was hard to really get into it. Sometimes mediocracy is a worse then just being flat out bad, ya know? To keep things comprehensive, since half of this was written in an RV and the other half is written whilst im on 3 hours of sleep, lets put my review into a nice list of things i did not like, and things i did about season one of TNG
The bad:
-I have talked about this before, but I think my main issue with TNG so far is the extremely awkward vibe it has. Shots linger way too long after characters are done talking. the jokes do not hit most the time. the dialogue is often stilted and awkward. The characters just do not feel real to me at all. It's just very very strange. I don't know if its a problem with the writing, the directing or the producing, or maybe just all three, but overall shit is just awkward all the time. I wish the charecters felt more real. Like yeah, maybe we didn't see much of Sulu in TOS, but they still managed to make him a guy you could imagine yourself meeting at a bar or whatever. what am i gonna go have some drinks with fuckin season 1 William Riker?? Nah, wtf is that bitches motivations and aspirations ?? that he wants to be captain and has blue eyes ?? what i am trying to say is that nothing feels real and no smart ass not because its a fictional sci-fi show, but because the characters all act super weird or literally just do nothing.
-Picard. I’m kind of turning the corner here but like... he just doesn’t do it for me as captain. I feel like since he’s the captain that makes him the “””””main character”””” and yet... what does Picard do? He’s just kinda boring. Like the man doesn’t even always bean down to the planet or whatever. And you guys already know my thoughts on his relationship with Wes... yeah :/ so no, I don’t hate Picard, I just kinda hate that he’s the captain.
-Where is the action ? Am I an old white male boomer for wishing TNG had a little more tits out violence like TOS did. I mean where is the punching? Where is the redshirt deaths and photon torpedos and shit. I need more violence, and I know that’s like, opposite of the message of Star Trek but dammit... more violence!
-Every single thing that happened to Tasha Yar in Skin of evil. I know you know :/ we all know. :/ and mini rant but in the beginning of that episode Worf and Tasha had a cute little moment and I actually thought “wow they would make a good couple actually or at least best buds” but.. well you know :/ too bad. Also I feel like they spent a lot of time trying to set up Tashas backstory and she actually had something interesting going on so like.... again too bad I guess :/
*cough cough*
anyway, here is what i did like:
-despite their awkwardness i do think some of the characters are neat. Geordi has to be my favorite, he just brings such a good vibe to the crew and I think the whole concept of his character is really interesting. I like Worf but I still feel like we don’t get enough Worf time and of course I like Data, tbh I never disliked him but he definitely grew on me more as I watched. Data does have the tendency to make me cringe... but like in the way your weird lovable friends do. And of course Wes, who deserves so much better then all the dumb ass situations they write for him.
-I think they do a good job of making it feel like the Star Trek universe without just copying everything they did in TOS. like its super different from TOS in a lot of ways, but still it feels like the same universe, and maybe even a little more true to the universe. like the prime directive thing is taken a lot more seriously, same with the federation not wanting to resort to violence right away, all that star trek jazz. its still there, its still trek.
-they don't do a bunch of annoying pandering. i feel like nowadays when they come out with remakes or spin-offs or whatever they always have to have a million callbacks like "hey remember this thing you loved?? here it is again exactly the same" because like yeah that is easy and it more fail-proof. like they could have just stuck a vulcan in the main cast, don't tell me you wouldn't have gotten Spock brain and just ate that shit up, but they were like nah and tried new stuff instead. and i respect that. because the callback episode they did do (naked now) kinda fuckin sucked. so good for them for trying to forge their own path.
okay anyway those are my general thoughts. More specifically, here are the epsidoes i think were the very worst
- Encounter at Fairpoint (literally the first episode and i kept checking my watch wondering when it would be over. it should not have been a 2 parter that was way too long. Q was annoying as hell. the main plot was not that interesting. )
- Where No One Has Gone Before (very tedious and hard to sit through. "oh we traveled too far into space.... oh we did it again! haha lol!" boring. did not like that Traveler guy sus as hell.... hated that Picard only made Wes and Ensign after the Traveler said Wes was important.)
-Skin of Evil (dumb stupid dumb)
-The Nuteral Zone ( i dont even want to get into this. i actually think this one stunk the worst and it was the last episode. so many things wrong)
annnnddd the episodes i liked!
- The Last Outpost (Ferengi Ferengi Ferengi Ferengi )
-Haven (how can you not love Lwaxana Troi this episode made me genuinely laugh so many times. lots of very good character moments here)
-Angle One (i really liked the concept of male wife girl boss society i thought it was funny and interesting)
-Conspiracy (i felt like this one actually kept me on my toes. also liked when that dude's head exploded)
annndddd that about sums it up people! was that a comprehensible review? no. was it long? yes. feel free to disagree with me or fight it out in the comments. what are your least favorite episodes from season one? do you agree with my takes here? let me know
#okay time to be a person now#so tired#so so tired#stick around for soon when i review killing time#yeah thats right bitch i read a book!#star trek#tng#the next generation#tng season 1#review#my takes#data#william riker#whatever whatever
