i’m popping in because i’ve finally had another sleep token dream!!! i missed having the eepy boys in my brain 🥹

i must be getting antsy about seeing them in may because i dreamt that i was at my concert! i got barricade (manifesting that for real plsssss) on iii’s side of the stage.

at one point iii walked over to vessel then shouted at the crowd and i thought he sounded scottish? then i’m not sure what pulled my attention but i clearly missed iii climbing off the stage because next thing i knew he was at barricade and right in front of me! it was once again intimidating to have him right there in front of me lol, but it was also sooooooo exciting! lots of fun haha

anyways. that’s all for now! i’m in my final two weeks of university and have to go finish a paper now 🙈

Keep in mind I am very tired rn so this will likely be very unpolished okay here we go–

The order of age goes Victim Chosen Dark Orange, we all know this, but I think for a long time Dark thought he and Chosen were a lot closer in age than they actually were. Chosen had to warm up to telling Dark about all the horrible things he went through, and that included the fact that he was alone for four years. (it's four years right? it might be five. I can't be bothered to look it up rn, its fine)

In between the Showdown and Wanted Orange is starting to think of Chosen as an older brother. He connected the dots to figure out that Chosen was also made by Alan and he saved them! He's so cool! This idea was only a little bit shattered when this older brother figure barged into the PC and kidnapped him and promptly got them both captured. But honestly what are older siblings for.

In canon Chosen does not let himself feel emotions enough for him to see Orange as a little brother, but the connection is there. He'll come around :)

SPEAKING OF CONNECTIONS– I recently had this idea that the Hollowheads had some sort of empathy-telepathy with each other. For example, one normal day out in the Outernet Chosen feels the exact moment Orange was created. He doesn't know what that feeling meant, and he never felt it again. Orange felt drawn to this new stick figure who saved their lives, and immediately follows him through the portal. Chosen felt something snap in his chest the moment Dark died. Orange and Victim lock eyes for a moment in the Box and feel something click. None of them talk about it, but it's there.

(that last one might qualify as an AU, who knows maybe I'll do something with it)

This one is more of a wish than a headcanon– Chosen takes Orange under his wing at some point, teaching him how to use his powers as best he can. However, since Orange's powers are rather different from Chosen's, it just results in a chaotic sparring session and setting a field on fire. The CG are not amused by the amount of bruises Orange gets, but Orange is having an absolute blast.

Orange is Chosen's "Second Coming"– surely that comes with consequences. I saw a hc where they shared portions of code and I liked that; something like Orange and Chosen have similar tastes in foods. Their eyes shine the same way when they smile. Sometimes they accidentally speak in unison because they each had the exact same thought. When stuff gets serious, they both narrow their eyes and make an expression that promises pain on their enemies.

Dark would be the best big brother and let me tell you why. Orange is often left with the Braincell of the CG. Have you seen how stressed this boy gets. He gets premonitions of his friends getting hurt. Dark allows him to mess around a bit more, in a "We might get in trouble, isn't that fun!!" kind of way. Orange has always had a chaotic streak, it just takes certain circumstances for him to tap into it. They would be able to get Red back for his pranking.

Orange would teach Chosen and Dark all about modern video games. They know video games, sure, they destroyed Angry Birds. But I think playing Minecraft would solve both of their problems. At least a lot of them.

I don't have many headcanons for Victim, I just haven't seen enough of him to get a solid enough foundation to make headcanons, but as an oldest child I can relate to him on a spiritual level. He may be gray now but with those three as younger siblings he's gonna get a whole lot grayer.

Gosh I love them so much, a house with all four Hollowheads would be the most chaotic house ever. Victim– the eldest with an actual job, no nonsense, the less-than-respected Holder of the Braincell. Since he is out of the house a lot because of Job, the responsibility falls to Chosen– older middle child, delinquent, failure of a cook and the only one Dark will listen to. Speaking of Dark– younger middle child, Chaos Incarnate, fellow delinquent and Escape Artist Extraordinaire, he is a terrible influence on the youngest– Orange. Orange is the black sheep of the family in that he is actually rather emotionally stable. He's in school, has friends, hobbies– his brothers just a bit jealous but supportive anyway. He also helps Dark prank the others; he's got great aim with water balloon catapults.

I cannot impress upon you enough how much they love each other. Their lives have been filled with isolation, suffering, rejection– but now they've found family in likewise people. None of them are alone anymore. Sure, Orange wasn't really alone to begin with, but surely he noticed how different he was from RYGB. He's not replacing them, not for a million dollars, but it is nice to have brothers who are similar to you.

i got some free time to talk about the last two chapters but I don’t remember them in detail. I usually re read the last one the day before you upload the new one so I remember but I’m blanking a lot bc life has been pretty hectic. I’ll point out the things that stood out in the last chapter and maybe some from the one b4 since I remember lots maybes

namjoon- we are getting so much more closer w him and it makes me so happy. He’s really starting to trust her and the stone he gave her 🥹 i squealed. Honestly y/n goes above and beyond for them cause she literally got him whole trailer back like wtf 😭 I assume this is his first birthday celebration because before during jk’s b day he was confused about the candle thing. And him loving sweets YAS 👏 he’s salty at first but sweet in the inside!

jin- im glad that he was able to share his trauma w y/n I feel so bad for all of them. They were trained all their lives to be abused and used. I hope we get to meet Jin’s friend and that she’s safe. Omg not Jin being shy when he was being praised for his looks when they went out to eat like 🥹 he is such a handsome boi.

yoongi- he’s trying to kill us fr that basket ball scene no like stop actually fr. They just know and understand each other. They literally can get each others signal in a snap 🫰 I assume they must’ve met b4 I just wonder how. He played basket ball near where she went to college so maybe then it went she went out to a bar. No but back to The basketball scene. The moment they win he LOOKED for HER. She RAN into his ARMS that a literal k drama scene right there holy shit. Omg I got so many butterflies cause that’s true loooove. I just cant- that scene was everything I don’t have anymore words periot ☺️

hobi- I think the shifting scene was the one before the recent chapter but I t’embêtes about it. Jin is so cute he loves little scratches it made me go uwu. Hobi and yoongi are such menaces fr omg. Like not them being naked in front of her and yoongi covering her eyes they’re such teased especially hobi. The whistle thing where he was self conscious about it but then she said she would be able to find him in a grocery store as a marker ahhhh 🥹 and then when she whistled at him when he won his race ahhh. He was caught up in his friends hugging him and then heard it from her and was shocked gosh it’s so cute it’s like their little thang. Him being buddy buddy w Alice is sweet but also y/nie is totally jelly fr. Cause her meeting all seven of them was in the making and she was already catching feels before but now that she knows she’s meant to be w all of em. The seeds~ Honestly tho Alice is charming enough and she’s kind where I don’t feel threatened by her but also at the same time I do. Ahhh it’s like not her fault but hobi eyes over HERE please. I’m so interested to see what happends if they Alice and hobi get together. Hobi didn’t want to mark her and really restraint himself and maybe it’s bc if the idea of sharing her w other people or bc he’s scared he’s gonna be abandoned or bc he wants that connect w someone else I dunno.

Joonie - Ahhh Joon is warming up so well lately, isn't he? His birthday was a blast to write, and had me squealing the whole time. It has been kind of hard to keep him so grouchy all these chapters considering he's my main bias, but I think for the character development it is well worth it-- I hope you think so too. You're right, Y/N definitely goes all out for the hybrids on their birthday, I wonder if she'll spoil them for Christmas, too? Also, you're right again, that was probably Namjoon's first birthday celebration, maybe that's why he felt like he wanted to give her that moonstone. Adorable!

Seokjinnie - Truly, Jin might be my fave hybrid but also so is Yoongi. He's just a total sweetheart and so whipped for Y/N already. He did not deserve that horrible treatment from the circus, and honestly I hope in the future Y/N and Ben cook up a lawsuit and tear the company to shreds. Jin's friend... well, she'll make her comeback soon, don't you worry! As for him getting shy over Alice calling him handsome, I kind of took that from IRL Seokjin. He often calls himself handsome (as he should!!!) but gets bashful when others confirm this or compliment him themselves. I think it's super endearing! 🥰

Yoongi - No like Yoongi is such a menace bro!!! He's just constantly flirting with Y/N, doting on her, and they just get each other. It's super sweet, and I adore leopard Yoongi with all my heart fr. I've said it before, but they definitely have past life lovers vibes or something adjacent to that.... AH and the basketball scene its definitely a Kdrama scene in the making, I wanna be held like that by Yoongi so bad.... he just wanted to see his girl!! (Also... so hot lmao) 💀

Hoseok - The scene a couple of chapters ago where Seokjin and Hoseok shifted was so much fun to write, seriously. If I were Y/N, I'd want to be snuggling up to the shifted hybrids all day long. (Like, imagine getting to cozy up with friendly bear Tae? PLS) But Hoseok really is such a tease, especially when he didn't even warn Y/N about the fact that he'd be naked in front of her when he'd shift back-- lucky (or maybe unlucky, for some) that Yoongi covered her eyes. The whistle!!! I think he was touched/taken aback when Y/N whistled it back to him at his track meet. He probably never had someone else learn it and repeat it back to him, and it was a special moment to include in the last chapter. As for him and Alice... things will definitely get a little tricky with that as time goes on, and it do not blame Y/N for being jealous at all. Y/N loves Alice, but she certainly wouldn't be thrilled to see her with Hoseok... And when Hoseok scented her, you're right, he was holding back! I think that he likely was hesitant to scent her because he has some abandonment issues that he needs to work through. Y/N will help him for sure!

Annnddd I’m back! so I know it’s been a while since the last update and I just wanna thank you all for having patience with me while I finished up with college, just a warning this chapter may feel a little awkward to read due to me just getting back into my writing mind so apologises in advance for this one. Anyways I’ll quit blabbering, Enjoy everyone! :)

This was my day of reckoning, my punishment for all the bad deeds I’d done over the past couple of years…I was finally being sent to school. Okay maybe that was a tad dramatic, but can you blame me? I mean who wants to be trapped in a building against their will for 7 hours straight learning about dead guys?! No sane person would willingly agree to that crap!

I’ve tried just about everything to avoid my approaching doom, hell I even went as far as hiding in the basement surrounded by cobwebs to try and get out of this, but as per usual neither Steve or Bucky took mercy on me, hence why in currently trapped between the two. “You are aware I’m perfectly capable of walkin’ by myself aren’t ya? The looping of the arms is not needed boys” I swear down these two are being more annoying than usual, and I didn’t think that was humanly possible cause these two are basically the living embodiment of annoyance. Steve turned and raised his eyebrows at me, shaking his head as he let out a small laugh, “Yeah there’s absolutely no way I’m fallin’ for that again, last time that happened it look me and Buck an hour to get you outta that tree”. Ah crap there goes that plan.

I’m pretty sure the noise I made wasn’t even human, it was a mix between a seal and a possessed monkey “I’m not gonna get outta this am I?” “Nope” and que another frustrated groan. “Is this payback for the time I placed that bucket of flour above your bedroom door and watched the both of you turn into ghosts? If it is then I want you to know I regret nothin’” both of them stopped and glared at me, for some reason they didn’t find that as funny as I did, and I have no idea why. Okay whatever you do y/n don’t laugh, even if Steve’s face looks like a slapped arse don’t laugh! A snicker slipped past my lips and a few seconds later I was full on laughin’.  Goddamn it.

Both of em just let out a bunch of sighs and started draggin’ my butt along the street, wait there’s somethin’ I haven’t tried yet…in hindsight this is completely stupid but screw it. “OH MY GOD LOOK A SPACESHIP!” I’m pretty sure poor Bucky jumped outta his skin, Steve ended up trippin’ up and falling down, I’ll admit that I felt bad about but hey may plan worked! So why am I still standin’ there?… maybe we try this thing called running y/n! I quickly pulled my arm away from Bucky and used my new-found freedom to run in the opposite direction of them, I could hear the shouts of protest from the both of them, so I decided to kindly ignore them and absolutely leg it.  “GODAMMN IT Y/N! THIS IS THE FIFTH TIME THIS MORNIN’!” when were the boys gonna catch on that I didn’t wanna go? Do I need to prepare a firework show and blast it in their faces or somethin’…probably.  

I know I probably shouldn’t be smiling, but the feeling of the wind flowing through my hair as my feet hit the ground made me feel free, after so many years I could finally begin acting my age and enjoy my childhood. I finally felt content with my life, which is probably the opposite of what I should be feeling at this moment in time, considering I was currently making my grand escape. And to completely honest I’ve got no bloody clue as to where I am. I glanced behind me to see where the hell those idiots were, to my surprise Steve was directly behind me, Buck was somewhere in the back holdin’ his knee and I’m guessing the daft sod decked it. Why am I not surprised? Okay maybe I should of kept my mouth shut cause literally a second later my foot tripped over a rock and, you guessed correctly, I landed on my ass for the thousandth time!

“Sh*t! Cr*p! B*lls! That f**king hurt!” and that ladies and gentlemen is my fine command of the queens English, a groan of pain made me loose my train of thought as I turned my head to Steve, to put it simply he was laid flat on his back with his eye closed. Well there’s the rush of guilt I’ve been waiting for, “Sh*t Steve I’m sorry, you okay down there tough guy?” I quickly offered him my hand to help him up, I mean it’s the least I could do. Steve’s hand grabbed mine, a not so quiet grunt of pain made me feel even worse, quick question why am I such an assh*le at times? “Yeah, I’m fine y/n, don’t worry about it you know for a fact I’ve had worse” a quiet sigh left my lips as I brought him in for a hug, which was a tiny bit awkward due to the height difference. Once we pulled away from each other, I couldn’t supress the need to check him for anymore injuries, much to Steve’s embarrassment and Bucky’s amusement, “Jesus I’m gonna have to start wrapping ya up in blankets and pillows, Steve how the hell did you manage to get a bruise on your ear?!”

The sudden gasp behind me pretty much answered the question for me, it’s safe to say barney boy is in trouble…for the first in my life Bucky looks pretty f**king terrified of me, perfect. Slowly I started inching towards him, the glare I was sending him would probably make a demon cry for his mum…so yeah imma go kill the boy. I didn’t even have to say anything, he just started runnin’, “IT’S NOT MY FAULT HE STOLE MY FR**KING PUDDIN’ AND THE PUNK KNOWS I LOVE MY PUDDIN!’” YEP DEFINITELY KILLIN’ HIM “HE IS A SMALL AND GENTLE BOY HOW IN THE NAME OF HELL CAN YOU EVEN THINK OF LAYIN’ A HAND ON ‘IM?!” god this sounds like a bleeding soap opera.

 At this point I wouldn’t be surprised of someone called the cops on us, all everyone woulda seen was a big lad runnin’ for his life as a small lass tried to murder him while a smaller lad ran after the pair yellin’ for em to quit it.  Now that I think about, that’s actually hilarious. Wait, where was I? ah yes the murdering of one James Barnes…okay that is not a normal sentence I am aware. “HE.STOLE.MY.PUDDIN’! THAT A CRIME WORTHY OF DEATH!” oh for f**ksake “HOW THE HELL DO YA KNOW IT WAS HIM?! DID YOU NOT THINK IT COULDA BE BECCA?!” I think he made a sudden realisation, cause the dumbass stopped running and BOOM I was on the freakin’ floor. Again. We both groaned, mine was mostly in annoyance more than anything, but seriously the bloody floor is quickly becoming me best mate! “…. It just dawned on me that that could be a possibility…” if my neck twisted any quicker I’m 100% sure that I’d end up doin’ that weird owl thing “Oh now you realise?! Ya gonna say sorry to Steve or not?” a few seconds of silence gave me my answer. “Don’t give me that look y/n! I ain’t doing s**t till I’ve got some evidence so he’s still under my list of suspects!” oh my Jesus Christ this is gonna be the day I get arrested for murder isn’t it?

“Barnaby…you have exactly five seconds to run for your life so I highly recommend you get your affairs in order and kiss ya ass goodbye” oh hey look at that I didn’t yell at him! Well done me I’m so proud! “could you two quit trying to kill each other for 5 minutes?! We’re already late enough as is it and I ain’t explainin’ to the teacher why Buck’s outta it on the floor!” my f**kin god Steve just yelled! At me! why do I never have a camera when this s**t happens?  “Jeez, alright I’ll murder him later, calm your damn t*ts Rogers” and cue the sound of barely contained frustration in 3,2,1….

“I’m beginning to get the feelin’ that you don’t like me y/n” oh really? I wonder what gave that away “wow you catch on quickly don’t ya Barnaby?” by the looks of things I’m really doing wonders for his ego, buck’s head looks like it’s gotten smaller so the risk of him turning into a hot air balloon’s gone down. The feeling of a pair of eyes glaring at the back of my head once again reminded me that the blonde boy was quickly getting tired of our crap, my worst fears were confirmed once I met Steve’s surprisingly intimidating glare…how he manages to be both adorable and beyond f**king terrifying is a mystery to me. “Okay I’m comin’ just stop staring at me like I just murdered your kitten!” and the little s**t has the nerve to smirk and look pleased with himself, ugh he’s been hanging ‘round me and Bucky too long that’s for sure.

“Ya know Buck and you are gonna be the death of me” right do I be offended or pleased with that statement? “actually, if anything it’s gonna be the pair of you that send me to an early grave cause god knows the both of ya don’t know how to stay outta trouble” two muffled sounds of protest came from my left and from behind me, “what’s that supposed to mean?!” once again the point has been missed “do you really wanna know the answer to that? I’ve got my report and presentation ready on how you two are a pair of numpties”.

Maybe that was a tad harsh…okay wait never mind it seems I’ve learned how to fly again with the assistance of one James Buchannan Barnes. “this is coming from the girl who can’t walk five feet without fallin’ over somethin’?” as much as I hate to admit it the walking embodiment of frustration and annoyance has a point “what you call fallin’ I call floor hugs, now how about you pUT ME DOWN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!” wait when did Steve walk off? See this is what happens when an overgrown ape demands attention. I don’t even have to look at Buck to know he’s givin’ me that look that says, “what the hell?” and “I’m not surprised by this” at the same time, “Nah I don’t think that’s gonna happen doll” the temptation to kick ‘im where the sun doesn’t shine is too much to bare for me at this point. “And you wonder why I love Steve more that you” Buck’s face kinda looked like someone just shoved a whole lemon in his mouth, I’m almost certain that he woulda dropped me on my ass if it wasn’t for the fact that Steve came over and dragged us both through the gates of hell.

This is gonna be so much fun!……said no-one ever.  

Okay…maybe it didn’t suck as much a thought it did, hopefully my skills as a writer will come back for the next couple of chapters XD Thanks for reading ! :)

Top 10 Personal Favorite Hit Songs from 2018

I’m kinda sad this series of posts is coming to a close, especially with two mediocre years for the kind of hit songs I enjoy.

I was very depressed in 2018 so I thought maybe it was the reason why I didn’t like most songs I heard, so I revisited the entire catalogue of 2018 hit songs from the year-end lists and... no, it wasn’t just me.

Disclaimers:

Keep in mind I’m using both the year-end top 100 lists from the US and from France while making these top 10 things. There’s songs in English that charted in my country way higher than they did in their home countries, or even earlier or later, so that might get surprising at times.

Of course there will be stuff in French. We suck. I know. It’s my list. Deal with it.

My musical tastes have always been terrible and I’m not a critic, just a listener and an idiot.

I have sound to color synesthesia which justifies nothing but might explain why I have trouble describing some songs in other terms than visual ones.

As I mentioned before I was super depressed in 2018, which wasn’t helped by the death of two family members including one I was super close to, and by catching a mysterious infection on a finger that doctors didn’t seem to be able to cure and which made my left hand hurt all year long, until I had to have an operation in early 2019 to fix the issue (plot twist, it wasn’t an infection, which is why nothing was working). On the plus side, my s.o and I decided to get married but it only happened the next year.

Ok so, hit songs weren’t that good (stay tuned for that), but albums? Some great stuff dropped in 2018. Unfortunately, Eminem’s Kamikaze wasn’t among those great albums and at that point he was basically dead to me. BUT! A Perfect Circle came back, which was completely unexpected! Nine Inch Nails released Bad Witch which contained the excellent and super hypnotic Over And Out! Mike Shinoda released Post Traumatic and every single Linkin Park fan was like “oh god what a mood”! Moby, which I hadn’t liked for years at that point after loving his stuff so much when I was 15 or so, released Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt and it was unexpectedly good! And The 1975 released A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, which, in my opinion, isn’t quite as great as their second album (I refuse to write its super long title again), but still super good. Just like the previous one, a lot of songs had crossover potential and I’m very sad it didn’t happen. Stay tuned for the unelligible songs.

But you know what? The album of the year, at least to me, was always going to be something much darker. Fortunately, the end of the year was when VNV Nation decided to drop its best album of the entire decade, Noire. In these trying times, an album about the fight between light and darkness was exactly what I needed to hear. I was super emotional when I first listened to it. Armour might just be the best song on the album. Collide explodes into a million colors after a super slow start. Wonders is a big mood. Lights Go Out is a super angry song which basically says ‘we’re dancing while the apocalypse is happening because they won’t let us do anything else’, and we need more stuff like this. When is the Future was a super solid first single and yeah, exactly, where is the future we were promised as kids? Only Satellites became one of my fight songs in record time. And All Of Our Sins is terrifying and super good. Just an amazing album all around. I certainly hope they make more in the future, but if they don’t, that would be a super high note to finish on.

As for unelligible stuff, there’s Chun Li (Nicki Minaj) which I found super weird at first, but it grew on me a lot as the year went on. I’m very surprised it’s not on the US year-end list, by the way. And I wish more stuff from Indochine had charted... again, I know. Apart from that, it’s all The 1975. Love it if we made it should have been a hit but wasn’t a safe bet for a leading single so it kind of makes sense. TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME despite its stupid title was a much more convincing hit, and yet, it wasn’t one, and that pisses me off more. And It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You) is one of their best songs ever. Catch me on the right day and I’ll call it better than The Sound, even. This should have been a hit. I’m so angry it didn’t happen.

But hey! Their new album is getting released in just a couple of days! Maybe 2020 is finally going to be their year? Wait and see.

Holy shit there hasn’t been a shorter list of honorable mentions since my 2008 list.

Remind Me To Forget (Kygo) - Good but (ironically) a bit too forgettable to be on the list.

Later Bitches (The Prince Karma) - So bad it’s good at its finest right there. Not enough to put it higher though.

High Hopes (Panic! At The Disco) - Tiptoes the line between good and super annoying too much to be higher. Not even the best song on the album (that would be Say Amen (Saturday Night)). Not sure why this was more popular.

Sicko Mode (Travis Scott) - God I want to love this song so bad. I tried so hard and it never completely clicked for me.

Next To Me (Imagine Dragons) - Believe it or not, this was the last cut from the list. I sincerely hope that Imagine Dragons will make good music again in the future and that their new songs will stop sounding like a person dragging themselves accross the wet sand of some post-apocalyptic beach covered in ashes.

So how do I know this was a bad year for hit songs? Well I not only struggled to find ten songs for this list but also struggled to find a suitable #1. Then I just went “I’m gonna put the only 2018 song I ever put on my mp3 player at #1 by default.” Does it make 2018 as bad as 1990? I’m not so sure. The top 3 I made for 1990 contained two songs I absolutely adored, including one of my favorite songs of all time. On the other hand, it was a bit easier to find ten songs I liked (not loved) in 2018. So... I don’t know.

I should also mention that Bohemian Rhapsody made the French year-end list again, at #83, and that is hilarious, but putting it on the list feels like cheating. Consider it to be an alternative #1!

10 - Finesse (Bruno Mars)

I know. Everybody likes this song. I’m no exception, and I love its aesthetic, but I also like it wayyyyyy less than 24k Magic.

9 - New Rules (Dua Lipa)

US: #16 / FR: Not on the list

Basically, same thing here. I like it but I’m using it mostly as filler for this list. The lyrics are pretty great, though.

8 - This is America (Childish Gambino)

US: #51 / FR: Not on the list

This would be much better if the radio version had kept the gunshot sounds from the music video, but on the other hand it would have been pretty terrifying to hear gunshots on the radio while driving, so eh... this was probably the right decision to make. Apart from that, this song and this video have already been analysed by countless people on the internet and I don’t see what I could contribute after all this time.

7 - Sweet but Psycho (Ava Max)

US: Not on the list / FR: #42

This sounds like a song from the bygone era of Bad Romance and to be honest, it would have been annoying several years ago but in 2018 that was genuinely a refreshing blast from the past.

6 - Speed (Zazie)

US: Not on the list / FR: #74

To be honest, I never expected Zazie to show up on one of my lists again, but 2018′s general quality forced me to do it. This is a song that starts super slow and keeps getting faster, and it’s mostly about overcoming depression. Everything I needed that year.

5 - Let You Down (NF)

US: #29 / FR: Not on the list

I don’t think I know a single other person or critic who likes this song, and yet it charted super high. I don’t love it, and the chorus is grating, but there’s some damn powerful lyrics in there, and a lot of it is extremely relatable.

What can I say, in this day and age, if you give me a super-watered-down version of early 2000s Eminem, I’ll take it.

4 - Marry Me (Thomas Rhett)

US: #76 / FR: Not on the list

Yeah, it’s a slow emotional song and I tend to dislike those, but I heard this song only maybe four times in total and it destroyed me every single time.

No, I don’t have anything else to say about it.

3 - Un Été Français (Indochine)

US: Not on the list / FR: #67

I do not like this song’s chorus, it’s a mess and a half. There’s a lot of much better songs on the 13 album. 2033 should have been a single. But this is the one which charted instead. And you know what? I’ll take “super messy and clunkily written song about how the far right is gonna destroy this country if we let it exist any longer, sung over a nice tune” over everything I mentioned previously on this list.

In a better year, this wouldn’t have climbed higher than the honorable mentions. But yeah, I’m not gonna repeat my entire 2017 lecture about Indochine. It takes a lot for me to dislike one of their songs. Even at their weakest, their hearts are in the right place.

2 - Flames (David Guetta & Sia)

US: Not on the list / FR: #13

We’ve finally reached the songs I genuinely love and uh, yeah, there’s only two of them. This is sad. But this song is a lot of fun! And the music video is absolutely ridiculous in all the best ways.

It was also a super useful song to me. You’re being super sad and unenergetic, you’re climbing into your car to buy some food, you’re turning the radio on and suddenly you’re hearing “Go, go, go, figure it out / Figure it out, you can do this / So my love, keep on running / You gotta get through today / There my love, keep on running / Gotta keep those tears at bay / Oh my love, don't stop burning / Gotta send them up in flames” over a super good beat and yeah, definitely. You can do this.

1 - La Même (Maître Gims & Vianney)

US: Not on the list / FR: #1 (!! holy shit quality wins for once)

This might just be the weakest #1 I’ve ever put at the top of one of my lists, since the only criteria that put this one there was “this is actually on my mp3 player and none of the other songs are”. Also, somehow, I only discovered it last year even though it was the biggest song of 2018 in my country, apparently...

Even so, that’s a fantastic song with great lyrics and a wonderfully catchy tune and that would have been enough to put it at #1 on its own, I think. But look at those lyrics! (here’s a rather good translation) It’s about how society judges people by their looks in public. The chorus literally goes “If what I am bothers you, well, tough”. That’s even the title. And I like the music video a lot, with this white box in which people are put and as soon as they aren’t in it anymore you notice how different they act or look, like the buff guy who turns out to have prosthetic legs, or the grandma who turns out to be covered in tatoos. Simple but cool idea.

It may be a weak #1, but it’s an extremely useful song, because having “si je vous gêne, bah c’est la même” (”if I bother you, well tough”) turning in your head like a playground taunt, it really does wonders for your confidence.

And to think some French friends thought making these lists would make me hate Maître Gims’ music once I discovered it.

He knew it was foolish and he should stop because there was no way, in this lifetime, that he could ever be with you even though he wanted too. He tried, really, he did. He avoided eating at the company’s restaurant, blocked your social media accounts from his accounts, your number and acted very cold towards you. But he could only do that act for so long.

It was Saturday evening, around 10 pm and the members of NCT 127 was still at the company, busy practicing for their latest comeback. “Everyone, let’s take a break. We haven’t had dinner.” The leader, Taeyong, announced as he stopped the music and grabbed his towel.

“What? Really? I didn’t even realize we haven’t eaten.” Haechan said with a chuckle as Mark handed him a bottle of water and his towel.

“Alright, let’s go eat at the restaurant.” Johnny said and everyone agreed but Jaehyun.

“You guys go on ahead, I’ll stay here. I made plenty mistakes.” Jaehyun said, taking his cap off to run his fingers through his hair.

“Sure?” Taeyong asked as he eyed his dongsaeng in disbelief.

Jaehyun nodded, placing his cap back on as he walked towards the sound system and he played their new song once more. His members sighed.

“It’s okay, we’ll just send him food. Come on, let’s eat.” Taeil assured the younger members before ushering them out of the practice room.

YOU had always looked at Jaehyun as someone who was unattainable. Someone like a god who was untouchable by a mere mortal but you couldn’t help but to fall for him just like majority of the ladies (even the gentlemen) in the company. Not only because of his killer visuals but also for his personality and his talent. 

The first time you met Jaehyun was during your first day at the famous SM restaurant. You were really having financial troubles and needed another job in order to pay not only your tuition but also your little brother’s. By some miracle, you were accepted as the restaurant’s new cashier out of the thousands of applicants wanting to get in. Your first day was really nervewracking not only because it was your first day but also because you were going to meet several SM artists you never, in a million years, thought would ever meet. You had always been a fan of NCT, though, so you were most nervous to meet them. Especially your bias, Jaehyun. 

It was during lunch time when the members of NCT came into the restaurant. They were really loud since they were a huge group and you felt intimidated as you readied yourself on taking their orders. Your co-worker whispered, “Fighting!” at you when she noticed your nervousness and you thanked her in response before taking a deep breath and facing none other than your bias. 

“H-Hello, what can I get for you?” you stuttered out, blushing deep red in embarrassment. 

Jaehyun smiled at you, his dimples showing. “Hello, I haven’t seen you here before. Are you new?” 

You nodded. “Y-Yes, it’s my first day.” you replied, mentally smacking yourself for being so damn nervous. 

“Hey, it’s okay. You’re doing great. I’m Jaehyun, by the way.” he introduced himself, reaching out his hand for you to shake. 

You couldn’t hold his hand. “I know who you are.” you said in barely a whisper. 

“What?” he asked, leaning forward. 

You lowered your head, blushing mad now. “Your order, sir?” you asked, clearing your throat. 

“Hyung! Hurry up, we’re hungry!” Haechan exclaimed as the younger members rallied behind him. 

“Alright, alright, (Y/N)-ah, it’ll be quite an order so I hope you’re ready.” Jaehyun said which made you laugh lightly. 

“It’s okay, what can I get you guys?” 

Ever since then, Jaehyun would take his time to visit you when it was your shift. He would start up conversations, even staying up with you until he was needed for recording and practicing. You knew it was a risky situation for the both of you however as much as you wanted to stop, to tell Jaehyun to leave you alone—you couldn’t. You were really enjoying his company. He was kind, humble and funny. Sometimes, when you had a test to study for, you would bring your review materials to study during breaks and Jaehyun would help you studying. It was these moments that made you fall for him even more only now, not just as his fan but as a girl who was falling for a boy. 

But then, things changed. Jaehyun stopped stopping by. When he did cross paths with you, he wouldn’t acknowledge you. He was rude, to say the least. He acted like he never knew you. 

It was painful, heartbreaking but what else did you expect? It was too good to be true anyways. 

A familiar face appeared in front of you. It was Taeyong and a smile was etched on his handsome face. You smiled back, straightening your posture. “Hello, what can I get you?” 

“Can you send Jaehyun some food, (Y/N)? That kid is practicing so hard that he’s skipping meals.” Taeyong told you with a disappointed yet worried look on his face. 

You furrowed your eyebrows in worry. “Really? What does he want to eat?” you asked. 

“Carbonara? Maybe a cake for desert?” Taeyong suggested as you nodded, punching in the order. “Here, use my card. Also, he’s at practice room 5A. You can just go in; it’s not locked.” 

You nodded as you swiped Taeyong’s card then went to prepare Jaehyun’s food. You were nervous, not gonna lie. It would be the first time that you’ll be seeing him after things got awry between the two of you. Even though you were hesitant to deliver this meal to him; he was still your friend once upon a time and you were worried about his neglecting his health. Once finished, you made your way to the practice room Taeyong told you about. 

It didn’t take long and soon, you found yourself in front of the practice room. You took a deep breath before entering the room where the blasting sound of a song you didn’t recognize bounced off the wall. You saw Jaehyun immediately; dancing to the beat, not missing even one. You were in awe. He was truly a performer. You were in trance as you watched him move that when he turned and twisted his ankle, you were immediately on your way to his aid. He fell to the floor, groaning in pain. 

“Jaehyun!” you exclaimed, surprising him. 

“(Y/N)? What’re you—fuck, this hurts!” Jaehyun hissed in pain as you panicked, looking around for something to ease the pain.   

“Wait, wait, I’ll get ice!” you told him, rushing out of the room.

You ran back to the kitchen, grabbing a bucket and filling it with ice. Then, you grabbed the first aid kit and rushed back to the practice room. You were never a physically fit kind of person but the adrenaline was kicking in and all you could think about was Jaehyun. 

Once you arrived back, you placed some ice cubes inside the ice pack and gently placed it on Jaehyun’s ankle. He hissed at the contact. “It’s okay, it’s okay.” you comforted him. 

Fifteen minutes later, you removed the ice pack and grabbed the elastic bandage from the first aid kit. You gently wrapped his ankle, not too tight. Then, you faced him. He had been watching you the whole time. Sweat covered his face and you took off his hat, seeing his drenched hair. “You work too hard, you know?” you said, shaking your head. 

You sat down, propping his ankle on your lap. There weren’t anything else to use as elevation. 

“What are you doing here?” Jaehyun asked after a moment of silence. 

“Taeyong oppa said to bring you food... Why are you skipping meals? You shouldn’t be skipping meals now that you have a comeback coming up. You should be healthy.” you couldn’t help but to nag at him. You were really worked up with worry. 

“And why are you still here? It’s your finals, right? You should be studying.” Jaehyun retorted. 

You looked at him, surprised that he still remembered. He tilted his head to the side, avoiding your gaze. “I don’t even know if I could take my finals; I haven’t paid yet. I paid for Jiwoo’s tuition first.” 

Jaehyun slowly placed his gaze back on you. “How’s... how’s Jiwoo?” 

“Still the same. That brat got into a fight last week.” you said, scoffing at the memory. 

“Why?” Jaehyun asked. 

“Some stupid guys talked bad about me and—,” you started to say however Jaehyun cut you off. 

“What? Who? What did they say?” he asked, eyebrows furrowed and was clearly upset. 

You blinked your eyes at him. “It doesn’t matter,” you said, shaking your head. 

“It does. It’s a good thing Jiwoo had your back.” Jaehyun stated. 

“No, it’s not. He should have just walked away.” you argued. 

“I didn’t teach him that. It’s a good thing he stood up for you because I would too.” 

You shook your head as you lowered it. “Don’t be a liar, Jaehyun.” 

“(Y/N), look, I know I’ve been a dick to you. There was no denying that but I didn’t want to... I needed to.” Jaehyun said then he scoffed and shook his head. “It was dumb, really. I shouldn’t have treated you badly.”

“So why did you?” 

“It was you or my career.” Jaehyun said, narrowing his gaze at you. “I wish I chose you.” 

“Why didn’t you?” you asked, feeling your heart swell in pain. 

“I... I don’t know. I just debuted. What can I do?” 

You nodded, blinking away the tears forming in your eyes. “I’ll make sure to tell Taeyong oppa about your injury. He’ll know what to do. Until then, please take care of yourself, Jae... I’ll go now.” 

“Don’t,” Jaehyun grabbed your hand. “Don’t go.” 

“You expect me to stay?” you asked him as you looked at, your tears rolling down your cheeks. 

“Don’t you feel the same way?” he asked. “(Y/N), I’m so fucking in love with you.” 

“I love you too,” you told him. “But, this, us, we—we don’t belong together. That’s just how it is.” 

“Don’t say good bye. (Y/N), wait for me. I know it’s selfish but please...” 

You shook your head, yanking your hand from his. “I’ll cheer for you until the end. Good bye, Jaehyun-ah. Thank you.”
