Episode 2:Â âI am typically regarded as a jokeâ - Livingston
Anyways... rip Colin, no idea who that was.. obviously Okay well I think we are out of the first impressions stage of this game and I think I've done an okay job of not making a strong impression one way or another, except to DeNara who I've been talking to most consistently since the start of this game. Except for today lmfao I was NOT active on purpose but I'll try to get to that in this confessional. I saw that the tribe went on a call so I decided to join and chit-chat with the girlies of this tribe and I've gotta say.. I'm lowkey disappointed to learn that despite being a returning player, everybody else on the tribe is friends with each other. Aside from Mo it sounds like they all know each other one way or another and I'm kinda left out of that connection. Even though they might not all be friends, it is a bit uncomfortable to be in a call with people where you know NOTHING they're talking about and you're not catching any of the jokes or references to other games. Also, I noticed that the personalities kinda blended together and these aren't people that I'd get along with in other orgs I play, so.. oops. One highlight of the call was that Nik was talking about Rachael and they were saying that Rachael got rid of them, I believe. Basically just talking about how they view Rachael differently because of that I guess? I was kind of in and out during that. But then DeNara posted IN THE TRIBE CHAT when it was just us three plus Kailyn on the call that Nik was spilling tea... and it was just. so. cringe. Idk if Nik or Kailyn noticed and the fact that everyone else was acting so nonchalant makes me think I missed something but either way I was on mute howling bc of second-hand embarrassment. As far as my current position, I do feel a bit comfortable with where I'm at because although I AM uncomfortable being left out of the friend group, normally I thrive early game when I get underestimated. I'm trying to just not make waves and stick to whatever plans come my way and hopefully people don't view me as a threat. Every time I'd leave and rejoin the call everybody was talking about totally normal IRL stuff so it doesn't seem like people are playing the game yet, but last round I did make a bit of an alliance with DeNara for the time being. Despite feeling like an outsider, I'm going to just continue to look at the positives of every situation because as a pessimistic person by nature, I'm inclined to feel doomed in any scenario. But this is my redemption season. I'm not here to get tenth place, I'm here to win and this season will prove itself to be an uphill battle and I'm just getting started. Tumblr Survivor has always felt like the story of Sisyphus and the Boulder to me. Look into the deeper meaning of the story and I promise a lot of the details do kind of relate to me and my character throughout my run in this community, but the general idea is that I've been tasked with a chore of having to push this heavy boulder up a neverending mountain in Hell. As a returning player, I've faced a lot of hardship when I could've just gotten the outcome I want the first time, and each return to Tumblr Survivor, I've pretty much done worse and worse since then. I'm ready to finally push that fucking boulder out of the underworld and bring myself back to the playing field I deserve to be on. For now, I'm just going to keep pushing.
So glad we won that first immunity. Why am I not surprise to see a unanimous vote for the first tribal. Even a self vote.... hopefully we win again todayÂ
Iâm already over this tribe. Keegan and Liv are the only fun ones to talk to, Joey I think tries but also doesnât. Also low key hoping people donât know too much about Svalbard cause if people know about Rachael and I being close that could be a problem. Iâm not letting my work schedule get in the way of my activity, but itâs a bad sign to me when Iâm of the most active people on the tribe. I should be the baseline, not the gold standard
I think our Tribe is a bit laid back. Not much interaction, not really that engaging. I hope Jake and Kevin did a good job at the challenge, I don't want to go to Tribal again. The typhoon here passed, I hope Tribal passes too!
Woo we got out the main inactive person. Although really my entire tribe is quiet and lowkey inactive, but Jake and I talk a lot in PMs which is good. Also Stephen is doing his best with timezones so I know he wants to play bc he's always on when he is able to be on. The next biggest inactive person on the tribe is Kevin, but he instantly volunteered to do the challenge so yay I guess. If we lose though, he is still an option to go in my mind. I'm not trying to make too much of a plan because we could win this challenge and then I'm going to try to open the vault because if we come in first I will have 10 chips. But I still need to figure out if it costs 10 chips to open the vault or if you're just not allowed to look at it until you have 10 chips.
You want a confessional, well here it is. Nothing has happened. To be honest, Iâve barely even spoken to anyone today. Or yesterday for that matter. Itâs also been quiet in tribe chat.
I finally got my tribe on a call. Most of them joined in, at least for a little bit so that was nice. The only person that wasn't on call was Ben, which kind of paints him as the outsider of the tribe right now.Â
...five seconds later
I want to get to know Mo better and maybe set up some sort of alliance with them, but they are so spotty with when they are on, it is difficult to keep a conversation going. I am not chill enough for this game yet lol.
ok. so like that's annoying. that challenge was supposed to be fun but jake is making a big stink. and like yeah i'm mad too but like it's over and it's just a game it's not like actual money lol. also, i don't really care if we go to tribal. makes you stronger. whatever. i'm sure he's a nice person but like i think he's just mad he lost. whatevs.Â
Nik and Rachael did our challenge and won. Thank goodness it wasn't me! What my tribe will soon come to realize is I am basically useless at challenges. Rip me.
...five seconds later
Yay! Mo finally asked if I wanted to work together! Took them long enough ;-) jkjk I am excited to finally start playing this game
So after a heated and undeserved loss - sorry Dan I know we talked about it but I'm sticking to my guns - I start packing my bags. All of a sudden Stephen wants to target John, John wants to target Timmy; and nobody is throwing my name out there... Like... Hello? I just got into a public fight with production, shouldn't I be target number one? And now, Xavier and I are the swing votes... How the hell did the worst Tumblr Survivor Player and a 45 Year old man end up stuck in the middle? What the hell even is this season?
WE LOST AGAIN. So now which alliance to choose?!Â
youtube
I can't believe this round. I should be the target, why - why am I not the target? I lost the challenge. I yelled at production. I am the easiest vote, but nobody is voting me! What is happening?? Timmy and Stephen made an alliance chat with Xavier and I to vote John. John and Kevin are working together to vote Timmy. Xavier says - "Jake tell me what to do!" Timmy and John are both telling me everything the other one is saying to each other, and it's amazing. I have no idea how Xavier and I are voting tonight. On one hand, you have Stephen and Timmy who seem like a really strong duo. But Stephen trusts me a lot, and if I vote out his closest ally than I'll go down that list - which could be trouble in case of the inevitable swap. John is MY closest ally, but if we vote him out the team is much more united. Do I play for ME or do I play for WE? I'm 95% sure the vote is going to be 4-2, and people are going to be blindsided.
âTheres three tribes! Means weâre less likely to have back to back tribalsâ -_- sure jan. So we lost again, blergh, looked like an annoying challenge. The tribe is still pretty muted, who knows whether theyâre voting for me or not. I made a 4-man alliance with Timmy Jake and Xavier, which i do want, but weâll have to see if everyone is legit. The two bad possibilities are if everyone is actually voting me for various reasons (timezone, round one oopsie, etc.) or if the real vote is jake for arguing with dan. idk, time will tell. From my POV the vote is John, pretty randomly just based on the fact of who competed in the challenge.
Hiiiiiii So I am very excited to be back in the game again. I very much enjoy my original tribe especially Andrew. We already have a Pennsylvania alliance with Stephanie and I think that that is good groundwork to have moving forward should we ever lose a challenge we already have three that are tight in at seven so if we hear anything about any of them targeting us we can do something about it. I like Livingston a lot and Joey but I canât tell if Joey is 14 years old or not and that kind of bothers me. I am v excited to get with Kevin and see where me him and Andrew can goÂ
Winning is great, but we need to lose the next one or itâs gonna be a weird spot if the first swap is at 18, although it is very possible that itâs at 16. I donât want to go into a swap with all the agency being with Luxor, or us having the most players because in both cases we get painted as the targets. Bad news all around
I have yet to confess but here goes! I feel very good on my tribe. We seem to be doing fairly well at comps so far and I would love to continue to miss Tribal as much as humanly possible. I have talked to everyone on my tribe in some capacity but I am not trying to be the one to initiate like alliances and shit before we even have to attend tribal. I just wanna be chill and lay low while also being a good member of the tribe whom people like. Keegan and I have a mutual agreement to make sure each other gets far. I got first boot in my last game and he has never made single digits here in Tumblr Survivor so let's change that. One fear with working with Keegan is that he knows how I play. I played his game, Forest of Horrors, and got rocked out at the Final 7. Keegan has since told me that I was runner up for Player of the Season. I am typically regarded as a joke in this community but Keegan is someone who knows how I play and respects how I play. This game is an entirely different scenario so I am going to likely try to keep my connection up with him.
So the vote seems like it's going to be John Coffey. I'm quite sad about it for a few reasons. He is really nice and I know we work well together in games and he is a very loyal player. Also, Jake had an entire temper tantrum last night after results and that was just extremely annoying. But, Jake is more active and talks to me more while John is a rare sighting. Tbh I would rather it be Kevin but I think they're getting a pass since they participated in the challenge...always next tribal because knowing this tribe it's a strong possibility. I swear if the next challenge is a music video though I will punch a wall since that will be my death sentence since I do not participate in those. I never feel comfortable so I just don't. If we go to tribal as a tribe of 5, that might not be that good, so just really hoping that that is not the next challenge.
ok here's the tea guys. i am pretty solid in my tribe right now. after this vote tonight there 5 of us, and 4 of us are in an alliance, which is good. HOWEVER, i'm solid with the 3 people separately. that's put me in a good spot for a tribe swap/merge. obviously we're like years away from a merge. but we could tribe swap soon. we shall see!Â

Bound by Circumstance â Chapter 13: What Was Given Can Be Taken Away
PAIRING: Nik Ryder x trans*M!MC (Taylor Hunter) RATING: Mature
ℌ MASTERLIST ℜ
ℌ Bound by Circumstance ℜ
Taylor Hunter (MC) has made it good for himself in New Orleans; turns out moving to a new city fresh out of college to reinvent yourself isnât as hard as people make it out to be. Things only start to get confusing when he finds himself the target of a malevolent wraith. Good thing someoneâs looking out for him though â because without Nighthunter Nik Ryder as his bodyguard he definitely wonât survive long in the twisting darkness of the supernatural underworld heâs tripped into.
Bound by Circumstance and the rest of the Oblivion Bound series is an ongoing dramatic retelling project of the book Nightbound and the rest of the Bloodbound series. Find out more [HERE].
Note: Circumstance only loosely follows the events and plotline of Nightbound, and features a separate antagonist, different character motivations, and further worldbuilding.
*Let me know if you would like to be added to the Circumstance/series tag list!
ℌ Chapter Summary ℜ
After her encounter with the bloodwraith leaves Lady Smoke without her cursed touch, Katherine sets out to organize a meeting with the only power in the city left uninterrogated: the Garden Coven. Taylor takes advantage of their time left hanging to finally visit Kristinâs hospital bed. There he finds a familiar face and finally gets an outsiderâs perspective on the weirdness his life has become.
[READ IT ON AO3]
âNo wonder youâre a dead name in this town, Ryder. Canât even follow simple orders. Didnât I tell you to keep Vera away from here?â
âHarsh, Tonya â harsh.â
Vera shoves the Nighthunter aside and almost falls on her knees at her motherâs bedside. Apparently the bad blood that parted them ran a little thinner than the blood they shared.
He recognizes that face â remembers a similar look in his motherâs eyes when she was watching him from his own hospital bedside. Kind of understands the way Tonya Reimonenq tries to look at anything but her daughter.
âAs if I wasnât gonna come see you?â Vera canât help but sound a little frustrated; a little broken. Takes in the thin black spiderwebbing of her veins theyâve all become a little too familiar with at this point. âYouâre lucky to be alive.â
âThereâs nothinâ lucky about this, Vera.â
Her voice is thick with anger. Itâs enough to pull her daughter out of her familial grief. Where she reaches up and Taylor helps her back to standing. Still she holds on to the railing of Tonyaâs bed with a hard grip.
She looks her mother over head to toe. Flinches as she takes in the burn unit casts on her hands and forearms. The way her hair is no longer coiffed with a salt-and-pepper streak of refinement but now, instead, lays in disarray over the thin hospital pillows.
Just as her ID band says, the woman lying in bed is Tonya Reimonenq, nothing more and nothing less. Lady Smoke is no more than what her name implies â smoke on the wind.
Vera swallows down something else, maybe some fondness or affectionate word. Instead just lets her hand hover over the nearest cast-bound hand with hesitation.
âKathy said youâŠâ but the words get lost somewhere between her head and her mouth and she has to try again, âthat the⊠the thing, itâŠâ
Even when Tonya physically turns her head away thereâs no hiding it. Not in the monitors that start to beep louder on the other side of her, not in the numbers that jump erratically. Not in the lights overhead â unflattering things to everyone, really â that illuminate the shame in her dark eyes.
âI canât feel it anymore.â
âFeel what?â
âThe connection, baby girl,â and thereâs something a little manic in the way she looks at her daughter then, the way she reaches out but canât touch, âthe connection to our birthright. Always there and thenâŠâ
The words come out of Taylor unbidden; âThen gone like smoke.â
A tear falls down Tonyaâs cheek. Dampens the pillowcase where it lands. Her vitals have slowed down now but the damage is done.
Expensive footsteps stop in the doorway brisk enough to turn their heads. To where a crisp and starched man fusses with a dark trench coat, practically wrenches it off of his shoulders and into the arms of an attendant passing in the hall.
His icy eyes land first on Tonya in bed and then sweep her guests â nothing short of critical, dismissive; borderline angry.
âMoney can buy you a good room and unlimited care, Reimonenq, but it wonât buy you out of hospital rules.â He snaps, takes the white doctorâs coat from a different attendant as its given to him.
Along with it a laminated badge: DIAGNOSTIC STAFF, TULANE MEDICAL CENTER. With AUTHORIZED VISITOR on a bright red sticker beneath it.
The doctor pushes through them carelessly â is already fixated on the clipboard of Tonyaâs information when he growls out âAnyone who isnât family get the hell out of my sight before I call security,â and he definitely isnât kidding.
âGood to see you again, Doctor Ramsey.â
He only looks up at his patient to see the condition of her arms and their bandages. âIt isnât a sentiment shared.â
Because they have no desire to stay and see what the doctorâs wrath looks like, since it sounds violent enough, Taylor and Nik make their way out. Stop only when Vera turns hot on their heels.
âYou should stay with her â you know, never know what could happen.â Nik mutters under his breath. Heâs so unaccustomed to showing concern that it sounds almost sarcastic for a moment. âI just mean ââ
âI know what you mean. But I ainât doinâ any good standinâ here.â
Taylor reaches and their hands meet between one another. He squeezes her gloves with the same concern and support as he had at the Shift.
âNikâs right.â
But Vera is, at least on the surface, adamant. âNo, Tayâ. Iâm useless in here. Out there I canâI mean we couldââ
Neither of them miss the half-glance she nearly throws over her shoulder.
âStay,â Taylor tries again; feels her resolve crumble just a little â itâs enough, âweâre not even going far. And if anything changes youâre the first call. Okay?â
âOkay.â
Taylor knows he has no right to try and mend the holes in the Reimonenq family tapestry. Thatâs not even what heâs trying to do if heâs honest. But underneath all that anger he can feel the threads of regret Vera is trying desperately to hide.
If something did happen she wouldnât forgive herself. And thatâs worse than feeling helpless.
When they finally find their way back to the front lobby (two wrong turns, five angry nurses, and a mentally scarring view of an old manâs ass later) Cal is sitting alone in one of the uncomfortable half-bench chairs. Heâs pretending to be focused intently on the muted play of college football on the nearby mounted television â badly. Keeps looking over to where a father distracts his son from the noise and bustle around them with one of those outdated planks with colorful metal wires criss-crossing each other for simple beads to travel on.
Makes sense, though. The kidâs mop of messy dark hair could place him for a younger version of Calâs brother, Donny.
âHey, Kujo!â Ryder snaps to get the wolfâs attention â gets more than that when Calâs upper lip curls like heâs baring fangs.
âYou call me that one more time, Ryder, and I swear to god Iâll ââ
âEnough, guys.â Taylor forces his way between them.
Ryder, however, is either entirely too used to threats by now or doesnât find the werewolf to be much of a threat. Both arenât very healthy reasons.
âWhereâs Katherine?â
And yeah, where is Katherine? Sheâd been so insistent at the Shift to see Tonyaâs condition for herself yet had been more than willing to hang back and make a call while Vera reunited with her mother.
Cal jerks his head towards the automated doors. âShe dipped out.â
âReally, I hadnât noticed,â luckily all it takes is a glare from Taylor to tone down his dangerous levels of sass, âyou find out where she was goinâ?â
âNaw, she ââ
âSheâs making arrangements for us to meet with the Garden Coven â ideally as soon as possible.â
Cadence arrives bearing the holy grail of all holy grails; hospital coffee. Makes balancing the three cups sans lids while swerving his way through a minefield of professionals, patients, and problematic persons downright easy. He hands each of them their caffeinated prizes while continuing; âTime is of the essence after all.â
A grim silence settles over the group. Just another time when, once again, thereâs more going on than whatâs being said and Taylor is left out of the loop. But he wonât fall into the trap this time â he simply wonât ask.
No matter how burning the compulsion is, how desperately he wants to know? Nope. Not asking.
Ryder practically gags on his first sip of coffee â funny, thinks Taylor, since he chugs down alcohol strong enough to burn off his tastebuds any other time â before he speaks.
âAnd thereâs no one else suspect?â
Cadence shrugs. âThe Mayor wasnât at the garden, but even if it is him by some miracle or another heâd need a witch to summon that level of power.â
âAll roads lead to the Garden.â
âWorst case scenario they agree.â
âYou shouldâve gone with her,â hard to tell which one is sharper; the look Nik throws at the vampire or the edge of his words, âno one has it in good with those crones. She could use the protection.â
âOn the contrary I might be second to, well, you in how I stand with them.â
Context â context is good. And judging by said context this Garden Coven is rather the opposite. He pipes up; âThey donât know me yet, thatâs a positive, right?â
Three pairs of eyes in a deadpan stare that tells him no, no that isnât a positive at all.
âWell,â Cal smacks his open palms on his jeans and resumes his seat â the kid and his dad are gone now, the toy left abandoned and on its side, ânothinâ to do but wait. Least here I donât gotta move Garrusâ inventory.â
So thatâs it, theyâre just going to sit on their thumbs and wait?
Well â Calâs going to sit. The vampire shrugs and hands his number off to Ryder with a mention to call him if thereâs news; takes off back the way he had come towards the hospital cafeteria.
Then Nikâs leaning in close, voice low and breath a tickle in his ear that Taylor wasnât prepared for and canât exactly contain his reaction to. But luckily the front doors slide open at the same time and his shudder could easily be taken as a shiver against the chillier evening air.
âListen, Rook, about ââ
It makes him step back and gape. âYou really think now is the time to talk about that?â Because, uh, no.
Then Nikâs rolling his eyes with an arm thrown over his shoulder. âNo, Iâm not â shut up.â And he may very well be trying to get Taylor alone to talk about⊠about what happened in the apartment, but his dumb legs follow anyway. Like theyâre conditioned by now to know safety lies at the hells of that dumb leather duster.
He stops them just shy of an unmanned desk. Keeps his voice low; âThereâs a lot goinâ on right now.â
âGee, really?â
âI mean ââ Taylor takes a little pride in forcing Nik to pinch the bridge of his nose, just a little, ââ between Tonya in there, and I donât even know how to begin tellinâ you all the things not to do in frontâa the Garden Coven, and yeah sure at some point maybe⊠talkinâ about earlier would be good ââ
âNot. right. now.â
âI ainât sayinâ right now!â A rare grunt of genuine frustration. Maybe Taylorâs toed the line a little too far⊠makes him back off at the very least. He can let the man get his words out, sure.
An opportunity Nikâs grateful for. âI figure you wouldnât wanna do this without Vera but you werenât wrong when you said she oughta stay with Tonya. But I dunno the next time weâll be in this part of town. And I never intended not to keep this promise.â
Oh.
Nik notices the epiphany in his eyes and gives a curt nod. Stands with his hands shoved in his jeans pockets, which hunches his shoulders, which makes him seem more sincere than the hunterâs normal bravado allows for.
âSheâs two floors up. You⊠you up for this?â
No â he isnât. But as ever Nik is (begrudgingly) right. Who knows the next time theyâre not going to be kidnapped, or attacked, or potentially fatally worse?
So he just nods and follows the safety of Nikâs heels towards the elevator.
It should be a good thing that the Intensive Care Unit doesnât have many long-term patients. But Taylor already has a thing with hospitals. A nearly empty floor with all the blinds drawn and only one cantankerous-looking old guy manning the nurseâs station?
Welcome back to your own personal horror movie, Taylor.
The floorâs only occupants are side-by-side. So focused on getting to her after all this time, Taylor barely gives the man a passing glance. Catches sight of a smaller, frail-looking body in the bed over where his back is hunched and shaking with silent sobs.
The air is stale with the salty taste of grief.
The first thing he notices is how dull her room looks. Makes sense; sheâs in a different city in a different state than where she grew up and even if there were volunteers about theyâre probably all assigned to the patients who will appreciate and take advantage of a strangerâs generosity.
âI shouldâve brought flowers,â mutters Taylor absently.
She would have brought him flowers. Thatâs just the kind of friend Kristin is.
Only the chart at the foot of her bed says âJane Doe.â Lists extensive injuries Taylor catches only a glimpse of before he forces his gaze elsewhere. But because heâs back in the Hunter Horror Flick each new thing he sees is leagues worse than the last.
Tonya had magic on her side. Even if it was gone now, even if it hadnât worked â it was more than the negative defenses Kristin had had against their attacker.
She looks like someone poured a gallon of ink over a kiddie pool of milk. Weird analogy but not a wrong one. The machine keeping track of her vitals beeps slow and rhythmic. Says good things about the state of her pulse and her heart⊠only that heâs pretty sure it should be a little more upbeat.
He would have thought the tube down her throat would make him gag but somehow knowing itâs helping keep her alive is enough to stay his weak stomach. The in-process transfusion between a healthy, red bag on her right and the barbecue sauce-looking contents of the left bag, though⊠well he has to look away some time.
Heâd hopedâno, thoughtâNik was still in the doorway; a reassuring presence giving him an inch of space. Instead the Nighthunter is given a mile and is nowhere to be found.
He shoves the âWhy Iâm Uncomfortable With Thatâ essay back inside â thereâs room to spare in the little mental box heâs assigned to process pretty much everything regarding Nik Ryder at a later and less perilous date.
Only when heâs taken in every part of her â no matter how frail or beaten â does Taylor pull up a chair from near the open doorway. Reaches out and covers Kristinâs hand with both of his own.
Because its easier than accepting the truth Taylor just tells himself heâs getting a fever, and that alone is the reason why sheâs as cold as ice.
The alternative is there, screaming in his face, but heâs willfully denied the existence of something before, right? Heâs pretty much a pro at this point.
âChrist, Krissy⊠Iâm â Iâm so sorry.â
Sorry heâs only just coming to see her now. Sorry he let this happen to her in the first place. Sorry he had such a stupid idea as he had.
Only barely registers the trembling in his hand when he reaches out and pushes a strand of her hair aside. He wants to rip the tube out of her mouth â it looks alien; wrong.
Can she hear him? Heâs heard different stories of coma patients being aware of whatâs around them but â but this isnât an ordinary coma. This is supernatural, this is painful.
This is all his fault.
ââBout time Miss Jane got herself a visitor. I told â oh, hey, donât I know you?â
He doesnât place the voice nor the face it belongs to at first. How could he â in such a short amount of time Taylorâs met so many different people, different creatures. To see someone from before all this began is jarring in a way he didnât expect.
That the badge tacked onto her olive green blazer says VOLUNTEER rather than a name doesnât help either. Not until her features waver in front of his face â a heat mirage on a distant desert road.
The cemetery tour guide is the literal last person he expected to see now. He tries to be discreet wracking his mind for her name but must not do a very good job; âTilly, not that Iâd expect ya to remember.â
âNo no, I â I do. I just⊠itâs been a weird couple of days.â
Her gaze, bright and with that cat-like intensity Garrus has helped him get accustomed to, look through him to Kristinâs bed. âI bet.â
Right â she had invited him back to the city with a free ride; traded stories about their plans for Mardi Gras and Taylor had gushed about seeing Kristin for the first time in ages.
And something tells him Tilly lives up to that look in her eyes.
âMight I be right in guessinâ this unlucky lady is that friendâa yours?â
Hesitantly he nods â checks behind her to make sure that grumpy nurse isnât listening in on them. âBut donât â donât say anything, okay? I ââ Nik would kill him if he was suddenly pulled in for questioning.
She taps her plush lips â how is everything about her just shy of perfect? â with a single finger.
âSecretâs safe with me. Iâm just glad sheâs finally got some company. I make my rounds when I can, but this ainât my day job.â
Though that begs the question doesnât it? âWhy do I have a feeling this meeting isnât coincidence?â
ââCause yaâve got a keen sense about you. I canât quite see what it is, litâle human, but itâs awful strong.â
Human, she says. âSo you know.â
âKnow what, cher?â
âI can see through your glamour.â
âHad a hunch ââ she takes the opportunity to step into the room properly, closes the curtain behind her for a barrier however thin, ââ âspecially when you kept starinâ at my ears when first we met. Talk about makinâ a girl self-conscious.â
âOhâIâm sorry.â At least heâs sheepish about it. But the fae woman waves it off with ease.
âYou didnât go tryinâ ta out me to all the humans in my guide group, so thereâs no reason for âsorries.â Most mortals donât got that kindâa sense about them.â
âYou run into this kind of thing often?â
âOhâwell no,â and Tilly goes a little red at the tips of her elven ears, âbut Iâve been âround for quite some time. In a town like Nawlins you canât even imagine what can be seen in one immortal lifetime.â
Actually, he can? Seeing Kristin and Tilly again reminds him just how little time has actually passed since his biggest concern was making sure he had all of the ingredients for his former roommateâs âtried and trueâ hangover cure.
It feels like heâs been through the ordeal of several lifetimes in a matter of days.
His silence speaks volumes, has Tilly pulling up a rolling computer chair from outside the curtain to join him in his solitude. She surprises Taylor by reaching out and tilting his head up with a finger crooked under his chin.
Heâs quick to notice that unlike Cadence, whose years echo deep in the weaving colors of his irises, there isnât a hint of her age to be found.
âThough maybe you can imagineâŠâ Its a prompt â an opening.
And maybe its because sheâs caught him still raw from taking in Kristinâs current state or just because he needs to get it all out to someone before he literally explodes â but its an opening that Taylor takes. A little too gladly, maybe.
The levee holding in thoughts and words breaks somewhere on his tongue and just pours out. Keeps going and going and going until she feels compelled to stop him with a gesture, grabs an untouched cup of water from Kristinâs bedside, and practically forces him to drink before heâs allowed to, well, keep going.
Lucky for him though she doesnât seem bothered by it. In fact sheâs best described as enraptured in his tale. Gives nods of understanding; gasps of surprise.
Only when heâs exhausted himself of story to tell, catching up at the literal present withâ âand now weâre just waiting, but shit I donât know where he went, actually, I should go look for himâŠâ âdoes he stop and breathe.
When Tilly finally decides what to say he just knows, somehow, that sheâs chosen every word with care. âThatâs certainly a story for the ages, Taylor.â
âNot one I wouldâve picked for myself if I had the choice.â
âWe donât always get to choose our path in this life, or the next for that matter. You should count yaâself among the lucky to be a part of the makinâ of the world; of the future.â
His brow furrows in confusion. âI donât get it.â
âNo,â the smile she gives him is coy and full of secrets, âI donât suspect you would.â
He expects her to continue â she doesnât. And now being left hanging is just shy of uncomfortable. Again, where the hell is NikâŠ?
âIt strikes me, Taylor, that you might not know jusâ what you are. Ainât you ever wondered?â
Tilly stands and kicks her chair back, makes a point of looking at the closed curtain when the chair collides with the wall loudly but when nothing happens it only encourages her further.
Gets her to grab either side of Taylorâs chair and start pulling him closer to Kristinâs bedside.
âOiâhey, whatâre you doing?â What is she talking about, what he is?
Tillyâs words drip with mischief, âMaybe that bodyguard aâyours is to blame. All this happeninâ at once but no oneâs stopped to look at the big picture.â
Taylor recoils just on instinct when she goes to grab his hand but the fae isnât having it. She wraps her spidery fingers around his wrist and the contact isnât just warm its like a volcano â scorching hot, bubbling lava, something rising inside of him and swelling to a previously unheard sound.
But he can hear it now. Like its a part of her. Some distant lilting tune that brings to his mindâs eye towering bonfires of majestic purple flames, of waters thousands of miles deep but so clear you can see right to the bottom, of wings the size of an airplane beating heavy and true against a sky riddled with a dozen moons and infinite stars.
He jerks them apart with wide eyes. Finds the smile sheâs shining down upon him unnerving in that he can see all of her teeth at once. People who smile like that are always undoubtedly up to something.
The hospital lights flicker, then return to their usual brightness.
He hadnât even noticed them go dim.
It makes him look around wildly. âWhâWhat happened? What did you do to me?â And its only occurred to him what might be considered too late that this Tilly woman might be less a friend than a foe.
âI didnât do nothinâ, cher. Just showed you a teensy bitâa what youâre capable of. Since I bet no one else has bothered to try.â
Before he can protest or even question her thereâs a finger to his lips. That same spark only hinted at â the melody stuck on the tip of his tongue. âAll these miracles â the good and the bad â and nâone ever stopped to wonder why they keep happeninâ to you?
âWhy you can see through the fog, or why yaâve got literal hell on ya heels?â
âVery bad luck?â He tries through a smushed mouth. Tillyâs laugh is like wind-chimes of ethereal glass.
âLuck ainât got a side to choose. But luck â luck is a streak of random chance. This is more. After all⊠whatâs our reunitinâ but somethinâ that ought toâve happened to bring us in the here and now?â
Fabric rustles behind him, enough to distract the fae woman and give him the chance to get her out of his personal bubble.
Heâs never been so goddamn happy to see Nik in his life. Even if he plans on hitting the man for abandoning him when this is over with.
Thereâs a small bouquet of tulips hanging at his side; still with the tag from the hospital gift shop downstairs.
Okay, maybe heâll save that for another well-deserving time. Because thatâs just sweet.
Only thereâs nothing sweet about the glower on his face. The way it makes the dark circles under his eyes look harder, the set in his jaw more prominent. He bypasses Taylor to glare right at Tilly. An unreadable expression hidden beneath his well-placed mask.
âWhat exactly are you implying?â He asks; joins in on the conversation like heâs always been there. Maybe he was â lurking just out of sight.
She cocks her head playfully. âOh, you know.â
âPretend I donât.â
âWhereâs the fun in that?â
He knows Nik well enough by now â when he doesnât answer its because heâs still waiting for an answer to his first question.
Then they both look to Taylor â like theyâre in each otherâs heads. Its unnerving enough already and that just sends goosebumps down his spine.
Tilly with that same hidden knowing. And NikâŠ
Nikâs scaring him, to be honest, with the unfamiliar expression. An actual expression is rare enough but this⊠like heâs seeing Taylor for the first time. When he couldnât have even managed it after being on top of him, being in his most intimate space?
The hunter rubs a hand over his mouth. âI had a hunch, just didnât have the chance to figure out if it was even possible.â
âHow muchâa this world is born on impossible, Nik Ryder?â she asks. Earns her a sharp look.
âHow can you prove it?â
She wiggles her fingers. âI jusâ did.â
âThat ainât enough to go on.â
âNot for certain â but itâs enough to get yâall in the door.â
âHow quickly ââ
âSay the word.â
âIf he wonât listen ââ
âHe will.â
âWhat makes you so sure?â
âEasy-peasy,â she presses the tips of her fingers together and Taylor swears he catches sight of sparks where they meet, âit all makes too much sense tâa be just circumstance.â
When Tilly pries her fingertips apart an unnatural breeze, warm and somehow ringed with sunlight, wafts over the room. Rustles the tips of Kristinâs hair and the thin hospital blanket resting atop her. Flutters the drawn curtain and the hem of Nikâs coat.
A single pink petal falls from one of the tulips in his hand â dances practically alive along the tile floor only to be swept out of the room.
Somehow, though, deep in his chest Taylor knows it isnât the lobby theyâll find on the other side.
In the same way he knows thatâs where they need to go next.
He knew he wouldnât be able to stay. Not with everything going on; the danger heâd be putting her back in. They were still waiting for word on when to join the others for their confrontation with the Garden Coven.
But looking down at Kristin â frail and so so cold⊠can Nik blame him for finding it hard to leave her side?
âDonât worry â sheâs safe here.â
He doesnât take the hand the fae offers and thankfully she seems to understand. âAnd you wonât tell the hospital who she is?â
âA faeâs word is bond.â
âThank you.â For watching over her, for letting him vent, for whatever she seems to know that Nik hasnât yet brought to light.
When Taylor turns its to Nikâs bouquet held out in offering. Heâs seen those hands; what theyâre capable of. Strangling goblins and firing crossbows and the way they cradled his jaw with yearning. Yet now theyâre trembling â the fear of rejection silent but there.
âYou said you shouldâa gotten her flowers.â Explains the Nighthunter absently.
Taylor takes them for the gift â and wayward apology â that they are. Lays them across Kristinâs lap and presses a chaste kiss to her clammy forehead.
âIâll be back, Krissy. Get well soon.â
Nik waits until they can cross the curtainâs threshold together. Must be feeling some kind of sappy because he doesnât even try to move away when Taylor finds reassurance in his hand.
Thereâs a light that shouldnât be there glowing through the gap where it brushes the floor.
âAre you gonna explain whatâs happening before we go, or ââ
âI donât wanna be wrong â you deserve better than that,â small blessings in the fact that Nik seems just as apprehensive about the first foot forward, âbut if Iâm not⊠you need to be ready for everything to change from here on out.â
He probably doesnât mean to be funny. Taylor laughs anyway. âLike it hasnât already?â â then, because the humor is fleeting â âYouâll stay with me, right?â
âThe whole way.â
Those three words â and not even the three most important words in someoneâs life â are enough to give him the courage to do what Nik wonât.
He puts his first foot forward and pulls back the curtain.
