A DASH OF (IN)SANITY
Tumblr media
It had been several weeks of frightening immobility before Shahara mustered the courage to turn her back on apathy and face what lied behind the door of her small condo. Her two sisters, Kasen and Tessa, and brother, Caillen —especially Caillen had refused to grant her some semblance of peace by mothering her like fierce lorinas without rest, ever since her younger brother had found her half-dead on that life-changing, fatidic night. Tonight, armored with the lethal skills of Seax – a protector of justice, Shahara rose from the ashes like a flaming phoenix. There was only one thing and one thing only in her mind. Caillen’s sigh of relief shook her to the core of a fragmented soul. He even dared to smile upon seeing her readying herself for the imminent confrontation with the world. At last, Shahara abandoned the chair she had been sitting on for the past days, lost to her own somber thoughts and haunting memories as silent rivulets of salty tears fell down her cheeks. Caillen in his optimistic ways thought it was cause for celebration hence the encouraging smile. Clad in her worn-out battlesuit, Shahara holstered her blasters and sheathed her dagger without falter, and with one deep breath, she ventured into Gondaria’s wintry night. Under her expressed order, Caillen was not to vacate the premises. Unlike her, her brother’s spirit remained strong. Lighthearted. Complete. She would not jeopardize that by allowing him to join her in her delivery of justice. On her way to Gaelin’s place, she sought for mercy inside her but found none left. Instead, vivid flashes of the tragedy that had befallen her tormented on repeated loops that combined with the angry fire scorching her from inside gave her the motivation needed for the deed she was about to commit. Blinded by sheer rage, she told herself she was doing this to prevent the same fate from catching up with other teenage girls. After all, she’d been only seventeen when her innocence along with her dreams was violently stolen from her. Gaelin had stumbled into her life when she’d needed him most. In her eyes, he’d been like a mythical hero that had instantly bowed before her and courted her like an innate gentleman. It’d been barely a year after her father’s death and her training as a tracer had just begun when he seeped in through the cracks of her defenses. Him following after her like some lovesick puppy had only accelerated the process. “Come on, baby. Give me a smile. That’s all I ask. Don’t worry, I don’t bite. I’m one of the good guys.” The mode in which he’d carried himself around her convinced her that he was truthful about his words and harmless in his intentions. In no time, she’d released her armor. At the time she hadn’t been aware of the consequences that single act of pure stupidity would bring her. God, if only she could go back in time. Why had she not seen the ugly truth that lied beneath the mask right in the beginning? But then, she knew why. She’d been so strong for so long that the instant she’d found temporary shelter from the restless storm of her life, she had immediately welcomed the devil inside and learned on him. And he’d seemed so reliable and genuine. . . Still innocent and untainted by the workings of a merciless path known as life, she’d believed goodness was still possible and a real concept. Not another abstract notion kids dreamed of in a world colored in pink. She’d wanted so bad to trust in the existence of happy endings and the decency of people. Yeah, right. Turned out all he’d ever been interested in was her unused body and what little money she had managed to collect. And when his patience had fled, he’d wasted no time to take what he wanted and left her bleeding. That day, she’d died. Not on a physical level but on an emotional, spiritual level. Every dream and hope for her future was now a distant memory, closed behind a red door that was sealed to never be opened again. And from that day forward, the blustering flames that had painted visions of a partner and children were vanquished – Gaelin had seen to it that would never happen. No love. No joy. Except for a long existence operating as her siblings’ servant while doing her damnedest not to let it turn her into a creature of bitterness. And making sure that what had been brutally taken from her would not happen to them. Her throat tightened suddenly, making her wish she could cry. But to what use? Tears were cheap and she wasn’t one to wallow. Still, she wished she’d never met that sorry excuse of human being. Gaelin had beaten and raped her without hesitancy. Not for a single instant did he pause to consider on his actions. Instead, he laughed while at it. Mocking her suffering and agony. The transport came to a halt to allow her exit. Closer than ever to end her unfinished business with Gaelin, her mind began a continuous loop of the reasons why she was pursuing him. To keep him from repeating the same ordeal to another teenager. To keep Caillen from ruining his life by killing Gaelin should he ever find him. Inside, she knew the absolute truth. Her notions of justice were blurred into a painting that bled red. The color of revenge. She wanted bestow on him equal pain and horror, and the degradation he’d given her. Gaelin’s eyes fell on her as soon as she made her presence known. Her skills as a tracer proved to be profitable when she searched for his new place. The initial shock reflected on those eyes that once burned with malice was rapidly replaced by confidence and desire. The acknowledgement of how she managed to find him forgotten. “Decided to come for round 2?” The arrogance in his tone alone made her stomach convulse with disgust. “No. Actually, I came here to kill you,” she stated matter-of-factly. Disregarding the underlining tone of threat, he sputtered mocking laughter. Laughter that quickly died out when a firm hand wrapped itself methodically around his neck after crossing the distance between them. Choking, in desperate attempts to push air into his lungs, his hands clawed at hers in panic. Failure greeted him fast once he realized the extension of her strength. Her free hand unholstered her favored weapon, the blaster, before pushing it beneath his chin forcefully. “Still feeling powerful, asshole?” As she shifted from stun to kill mode on her blaster, her eyes gleamed with wicked satisfaction. She had him squirming like a little worm about to be squished. By now, Gaelin was more than convinced she wasn’t playing around and this time there was no escape from the past. So, he begged. Supplicated for her mercy, but she had none. So none was offered to him. At least she wasn’t laughing at his misery. (“What’s the matter, baby? You want some more of what I got? Let me show what a real man can do.”) He’d taken pleasure during the entire time he’d tortured her. For that, she still couldn’t stand having someone call her baby. That mocking endearment still rang in her ears. Until then, she’d thought herself in love with him. And then, she had asked why he’d done it. . . (“I take what I want, baby. That’s what a man does. You gave me all your money, you want me nice. Go get some more and come see me.”) Her torn clothes were tossed at her as he’d dismissed her. (“Now get out. You call the enforcers on me, and I promise you I’ll see you and those other little whore sisters of yours in the ground.”) Barely seventeen, she’d been forced to walk home on her foot, with no money and torn clothes. Hurt and bleeding. And not a single person stopped to come to her aid. As a result of not having any money left, treatment had been denied her and with it, she’d lost her ability to have children. She’d lost everything that day. She hadn’t known brokenness until then. Unable of being the same after that, she’d stopped laughing and smiling and joking around. Revisiting the past only fueled the burning passion and need of ending his life but she refused to gift him with a quick death. Oh no. Today, she willingly welcomed the dark side of her even though she pretended it didn’t exist most days. Gaelin’s lip busted open after delivery of a painful backhand across his face. Shaking with barely tamed anger, she forced him to sit on a chair after demanding him to remove every piece of clothing. Once tied up to the limbs of the chair, she walked in circles, purposely igniting his discomfort and dread. Then, she unsheathed her dagger. Glinting in the dim light, she brought the sharp blade to the base of his throat with purpose and precision. Without drawing blood just yet, she hauled it down his chest to his stomach, only pausing by the happy trail. Gagged, Gaelin protested against his restraints as a proverbial bucket of cold water rained down on him. True horror took claim of his features when she confirmed his fears. “I’m going to cut your dick. Then, I will kill you.” And she delivered well on her promise.

After a morning down pour, the ICC decided the teams play 15 ovals instead of 20 here in the capital Kampala.
Nigeria elected to bat and put on 105/5.
Leke Oyede was Nigeria’s top scorer with 27 runs, while Isaac Okpe picked 19 runs and Ovais Yousof had 14 runs.
Kenya later chased with ease to put on 106/2. Dhiren Gondaria was in excellent form when he picked 47 runs, while Alex Obanda picked 27 runs.
“This has been a good start for us and we need to keep the same momentum,” said Kenya’s Obanda.
Th other games to be played later will see hosts Uganda battle Botswana and Ghana facing favourites Namibia.
The six teams are playing on a round-and-robin base with the top two qualifying to represent Africa at the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup qualifier in the United Arab Emirates later this year – where six teams will advance to the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in October next year.

It adopts a round-robin format (where teams will be divided into groups of seven each) which will be followed by the playoffs. Out of these fourteen teams, six will qualify to the next stage. They will then meet Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the first round of the World Cup. These eight sides will further be divided into two groups of four each. The best teams will then advance to the Super 12s stage of the T20 World Cup 2020. All the matches of this tournament will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Being the hosts, the UAE has qualified directly for this T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament. With Zimbabwe currently serving a ban, Nigeria has replaced them in the tournament. Khawar, Bilal give Oman fifth-place finish
Oman 257 for 5 (Khawar 112*, Wategaonkar 67, Gondaria 2-17) beat Kenya 253 (Gondaria 68, Ngoche 66, Bilal 5-40, Khawar 3-48) by five wickets
Khawar Ali gets high-fived after taking the wicket of Ibrahim Khaleel Peter Della Penna
Khawar Ali triggered a middle-overs collapse and followed it up with his maiden List A century to give Oman a fifth-place finish in the WCL Division Two, with a five-wicket win over Kenya in Windhoek. Khawar’s three wickets reduced Kenya to 148 for 7, before a lower-order surge hauled them to 253. He then offset an early loss in the chase with an unbeaten 112 to steer Oman home with 18 balls to spare.
Kenya dominated the early exchanges, with Dhiren Gondaria blasting 68 off 49 balls. But Oman hit back with quick wickets as Kenya moved from 79 for no loss to 88 for 3, before Gondaria became Khawar’s first victim.
It took an eighth-wicket partnership between their captain Shem Ngoche (66) and Nehemiah Odhiambo (42) to stem the slide. The two fell in successive overs before Kenya folded with one ball remaining in the innings. Left-arm pacer Bilal Khan was responsible for the bulk of the damage, snaring his second five-for in four matches.
Oman lost Jatinder Singh in the ninth ball of the chase, before Khawar put the chase back on track through partnerships of 57 with Zeeshan Maqsood, the captain, and 131 with Vaibhav Wategaonkar (67). He struck his 11th boundary, and the winning runs, off Gondaria in the last ball of the 47th over.

Namibia relegate Kenya, set up semi-final against UAE

Namibia relegate Kenya, set up semi-final against UAE
Namibia 111 for 2 ( Baard 37 retired hurt, Davin 22) beat Kenya 110 ( Gondaria 60, Scholtz 4-15, Burger 3-17) by eight wickets Scorecard
Bernard Scholtz accepts the Man of the Match award from ICC Associate board representative Francois Erasmus Peter Della Penna
Kenya’s fiery start was put on ice by the spin duo of Bernard Scholtz and Petrus Burger as Namibia secured an eight-wicket win before lunch. It was Namibia’s third victory in as many days, and a fourth on Wednesday over UAE would put them in the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.
Kenya had been eliminated from contention for the Qualifier a day earlier, but they were now looking to avoid relegation to WCL Division Three. After Irfan Karim fell on the second ball of the match to Sarel Burger, Dhiren Gondaria torched the medium-pace trio of Burger KK Smit and Craig Williams. Ghondaria smashed five sixes on his way to 60 off 46 balls as Kenya motored to 77 for 1 in 12 overs.
But after an early crest, the trough came just as quickly for Kenya when Burger and Scholtz entered the attack. Gondaria’s innings came to an end when he holed out to Jan Frylinck at long-on off the first ball of the 13th over. Two balls later, Collins Obuya attempted a paddle sweep only to pop a catch to wicketkeeper Zane Green. The downward spiral continued to twist through Kenya’s scorecard.
Scholtz struck with his first balls in the 16th and 18th and over the next eight overs Kenya managed to add just 10 runs. The pressure created panic and resulted in the run out of Rakep Patel. The left-arm spinner struck two more times to bowl Kenya out 90 minutes before lunch.
Stephan Baard got Namibia’s chase rolling to make sure the match would not suffer the same fate as the first replay, washed away after five overs with no result. The opener spanked 37 off 39 balls before retiring hurt with a muscle strain in his left shoulder. He is expected to be available for Wednesday’s match against UAE.
After Lohan Louwrens and Zane Green fell off successive balls, Williams came out and settled the nerves with an unbeaten 28 off 18 balls. All but two of those runs came in the last over of the match in which Williams slugged Nehemiah Odhiambo for two fours and two sixes, including the match-winning boundary off a free hit.
On the final day of the group stage, Namibia and UAE will play a semi-final at Affies Park while Canada and Nepal will do likewise next door at Wanderers. Both Canada and Nepal have three wins and one loss in four matches, and the winner of this match will clinch a spot in the Qualifier. Namibia also have three wins in four matches and will face UAE who have two wins and two losses. . A win for Namibia will also clinch a promotion berth. A win for UAE, on the other hand, will create a three-way tie for second with Namibia and the loser of the Canada v Nepal match. However, UAE’s net run-rate – the tournament tiebreaker – is superior to the three other teams, none of whom can improve their net run-rate through a loss.

Peter Della Penna: The agony and ecstasy of World Cricket League

Peter Della Penna: The agony and ecstasy of World Cricket League
At 3:15pm local time on Monday afternoon, UAE coach Dougie Brown was standing alone on the east side cover boundary at Affies Park, far away from the UAE squad tent. The clock was ticking on UAE’s time as an ODI nation.
Entering the day at 1-2, UAE and Oman were effectively playing an elimination playoff: the winner would stay in the hunt for a shot at progressing to the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, the loser knocked out.
With Oman 89 for 3, having just clattered legspinner Imran Haider for two boundaries in a 10-run 26th over in a chase of 160, the professional livelihoods of Brown’s players – even his own job status – were under threat.
Two days earlier, Brown had spoken about players sticking to regimented processes that, if consistently followed, will lead to the desired winning results. But that can only be done by the players inside the boundary. Outside the ropes, standing in the shade of the bleachers, Brown had all the time in the world to ponder existential thoughts.
“This form of cricket is brutal,” Brown said on Monday. “Every single ball that is bowled or run that’s scored, wicket taken, has got a knock-on consequence to not just the game but to people’s careers. I don’t think people actually appreciate that everybody here is playing for their career, coaches included.
“I’ve never played in a World Cup final but I can only imagine what the coaches and players are actually going through when they get to that point because ultimately it’s the same emotion. So yeah, it was a huge emotional rollercoaster today.”
Minutes after that costly Haider over, a rip occurred in the space-time continuum of UAE’s cricketing universe, and that of the Oman squad too. Ajay Lalcheta, fairly new to the crease, set off for a questionable run from the non-striker’s end and was sent back by the well-set Jatinder Singh.
UAE captain Rohan Mustafa circled around the ball before collecting to throw. Two outcomes were possible, creating divergent futures for both sides: miss the stumps and the clock begins ticking faster for UAE. Hit and the moment may be frozen in time, a line of demarcation tracing back to joy for UAE and heartbreak for Oman.
At 4:15pm, the post-match presentation pop-up stand was in the midst of being set up. UAE’s players had their sunglasses on to shield the dry sun from their eyes. Oman’s players had their sunglasses on to hide the watery red in theirs.
Oman’s journey from WCL Division Five was one of the best stories in world cricket over the past 20 months. The satisfaction experienced at each step of a grueling pathway to three consecutive promotions is a feeling that only Afghanistan can identify with. They had been hoping to make it four and continue replicating their fellow Asian side’s Cinderella rise to ODI status. But the clock struck midnight for Oman about eight hours early on Monday afternoon.
Shem Ngoche walks off the field alone and disconsolate after a last-ball defeat Peter Della Penna
Adjacent to Affies Park, a similar drama was unfolding in the game between Nepal and Kenya. After starting their campaign with a thrilling one-wicket win, Nepal were left needing two runs off two balls on Monday.
A chaotic run-out had just dismissed Rohit Paudel for 47 on the fourth ball of the last over in a chase of 178. Sompal Kami had been the culprit calling for a non-existent run, which had Paudel slamming his bat on his pads and walking off the field. Sompal missed the fifth ball and for the first time since Nepal were 82 for 5, Kenya looked like favorites.
That they still had runs to defend was due to the lower-order heroics of Shem Ngoche in the first innings. Kenya had a bright start until Sandeep Lamichhane bulldozed his way through the batting line-up. When the legspinner came on in the 17th over, Kenya were 62 for 0. When he took his fifth wicket off his final delivery in the 45th over, Kenya had fallen to 139 for 8.
But in came Ngoche at No. 9, smashing Sompal for six to end the 47th and again to begin the 49th on his way to 23 not out off 15 balls. Fate would have the two meet again on the final ball. A win for Nepal would put them at 3-1 and in pole position for one of two promotion berths to move on to Zimbabwe. A loss for Kenya would eliminate them from contention.
Nelson Odhiambo charged in and his attempted yorker wasn’t full enough, giving Sompal room to get under and drive the ball between long-on and deep midwicket. Karan KC, who came in off strike after Paudel fell, got an excellent start making the first run and there was little doubt he’d make it back for the second. Sompal’s trek back to the striker’s end for two wasn’t as assured. If Ngoche fielded cleanly, he had a genuine chance to beat Sompal with a relay to the wicketkeeper to secure a tie.
But in his haste to get a throw off, Ngoche fumbled the ball before stumbling past it completely. He slid to a stop on his knees, as Nepal’s bench stormed the field, first to swarm Karan at the non-striker’s end before moving on to piggyback Sompal with glee.
“In the past, we were always on the other side of these finishes, the wrong side,” Nepal vice-captain Gyanendra Malla said. “This week, we are on the right side.”
Meanwhile, a glum Ngoche had his face buried in the turf. Dhiren Gondaria, who had been running in from long-on, kept walking past Ngoche, his face an emotionless blank. Gurdeep Singh trudged from square leg to pick up the ball sitting on the turf behind Ngoche before joining Kenya’s handshake line as they waited for Nepal’s celebrations to break up. After a few moments, Ngoche was able to bring himself to kneel on his left knee, arms crossed over his right, gazing back at the pitch with lips quivering, trying not to break down in tears.
While both teams were heading back to their change rooms, Ngoche, 40 yards away, was only just getting back on his feet. There was no Andrew Flintoff or Grant Elliott to console him. Ngoche began a long and lonely walk back to the pavilion, pausing briefly at the boundary rope to look up at the skies.
This is the agony and the ecstasy of the World Cricket League.
