I was entertaining myself with Google Earth (as you do) and "found" this giant submarine channel southwest of Ireland.
This is the Gollum Channel System in the Porcupine Seabight basin.
The name catched my attention, of course, so I opened the first article about this huge underwater canyon (this one) and look what I found:
They're all there!!! Someone had fun with the the naming of these smaller canyons! This is the best thing in a long time...
#this is so so interesting!#I want to know everything about it#how does it look down there#the article says it isn't the result of glaciation#which is what I would assume#apparently it's older#gollum channel system#north atlantic#tolkien#hobbits#gollum

Dragon Age: Absolution Episode 3
some random bits and pieces on Episode 3. under a cut due to length
Episode 1 post, Ep 2
the episode title is clever, The Serpent's Coil. it's like, they're going further into danger/the lion's den, only with serpent Tevinter imagery instead, it's dangerous, etc, but also like, as Miriam meets Rezaren again for the first time since her escape at the end of the episode, that's her ensnared once again in this treacherous snake's clutches
"Emergency grenades" reminded me of "Emergency - induction - port"
Between three stories and five Lords of Fortune, the LoFs felt quite prominent in Tevinter Nights. Interestingly here they are once again front n center with Lacklon's character. LoFs are known for wearing trinkets and their treasure - I wonder if that's what the various gold items Lacklon wears is (earrings, bracelets, the belt etc). If so that means he survived as a LoF for more than a year or two, which entitles a LoF to do so
^ hh Lacklon's face in these scenes.. he never had a chance did he
hhh "nug-humping" takes me back to "BARTRAND! You nug-humping bastard!". this insult always feels like the dwarf equivalent of "sheep-shagger"
Building on what we learned in episode 2, which stated that the palace's security system is designed to kill everyone in the palace in order to stop a full-scale coup, in this episode we learn that "full-scale coup" more specifically means a full scale slave revolt/rebellion. designing a security system to brutally put down a slave rebellion using the bodies of dead slaves as walking corpse fighters to kill said slaves is.. grim
Tassia is really badass, strong and stalwart, a tank, protective of her men and refusing to put a magical macguffin above the lives of her men
^ from the fact that they're walking corpses who appeared from the palace, I guess these are the bodies of the dead slaves that Marconius IV put in the walls
in DA:I the Necromancy skill tree color is all purpley, I guess that's why when the walking corpses are felled they burst into that purpley-colored cloud
aaaaa but the fight scenes in this show just make me really excited and hyped for combat in DA:D
I appreciate that Mr Lacklon is sometimes shown out of breath or sweating after physical exertion such as walking long distances uphill or a fight. not everyone ever is a high-stamina, chiselled athlete, but they can still be badass, cool and fight :) u know?
"Rolls" 🥺🥺..
another thing I appreciate about the show, even with the moments of light-heartedness and the animation style etc, is that the characters get to swear
battle boyfriends!! Σd(゚∀゚)
when Hira is stuck in the vault, if they were to blast it open, wouldn't Hira be able to stay in one piece if she just.. moved away from and back from the entrance/blast zone?
when Hira asks "You have the Circulum?" she is channelling Gollum there a lil for a min there
when Hira says "Not if you want me to stay in one piece too" she looks down, looks sad, shuts her eyes and touches her necklace. it feels like a moment of apology to the dead father she won't avenge and a moment of resignation that she won't be able to personally carry out her plan
'Take it to my own contact in Kirkwall, at a place called the Hanged Man' - so this was basically a fake story from Hira, right, or there is a Red Templar remnant contact that she really would have met in the Hanged Man to on-pass the Circulum. on the first watch I believed Hira's story here at face-value, I was led by the suggestion of the familiar and wondered if perhaps the so-called contact was Varric Tethras. smart, a good misleading/twist. like, that would have made a lot of sense if it was true, Varric's still doing Inquisition remnant stuff e.g. the report of the Genitivi expedition in Tevinter Nights being sent to Varric, Gatt in Half Up Front basically telling Irian and Vadis "go talk to Varric Tethras" etc. showrunners, I see what you did there!!
minor lore: two of Tassia's men are called Kal and Rankin
^ just Tassia being badass, once again my weakness for tall, heavily armed and armored, warrior women has got me by the throat
Qwydion is brave 🥺 she's scared, and the exit and salvation was right there shining bright and within touching distance, but despite all she'd seen and her fear she went back to help those less capable than she 🥺.. it's harder to be brave and do the right thing when you're afraid. a good egg
^ Mustache elf!! Beard elf!! The elven facial hair lore ?¿? continues. in DA:O, Sarel the Dalish elf has a beard/stubble, then in Dragon Age: Redemption Yevven has facial hair. meanwhile Fenris tells Varric elves can't grow beards
^ are those bangs? shades have bangs? emo bangs? I always thought they were just flaps on their lil shade hats
^ Arcane grenades are pretty :) sera would like these
Ooh, Qwydion used that metal pole she took from one of the elves as a lightning rod for Chain Lightning! very cool. also I like how some of the spells in the show are clearly identifiable as in-game spells, like Chain Lightning or Wall of Fire. it makes it feel like Dragon Age and shows the show creators played the games and tried to incorporate small details like this
^ a superhero landing here from Tassia
is the right trope Stepford Smiler? Rezaren is a bit of a Stepford Smiler

Signals Thursday #7 – Interview Margin Signals
All good things come to an end at one time – and now it is time to say goodbye to the Signal Thursday series (temporarily) – but wait, before you close the tab – we have one interview partner left, and you are definitely advised (hold on, not financial advice!) to read what Robbo by MARGIN SIGNALS has to tell us about their trading style, their auto trader, his dark & shady past (just kidding, he is a goody two shoes) and of course his precioussss gems, which he protects like Gollum. Ladies & Gentlemen – pull the curtains up one last time and enjoy with me our auto-trading hero: ROBBO!
SmartOptions.io: You are more a swing trader than a scalper. With the signals in your channel, you are often pretty long in your trades. Aren’t the fees, especially with leveraged positions and the funding rate, a problem when doing so?
Robbo [Margin Signals]: Yes, we execute trades from a 1hr time frame as a day trader would but we generally manage on a 4hr or daily and try to take advantage of longer trending markets. The fees can add up, but due to our ability to gain a bigger ROI on our winners, it really negates the costs. We also have many fewer trades than a scalper on a monthly basis, so I would even argue to a degree that our fees may end up reasonably the same. Unfortunately, fees are unavoidable, its a cost of business, but can also be managed with good risk/reward consideration.
SmartOptions.io: You guys developed an auto trader, by using the Bitmex API. How are things running with it? Do you face problems like transmission lags, failed orders, unfilled stops from time to time or is it running smoothly? What does the future hold with Margin Signals – what can we expect?
Robbo [Margin Signals]: The Auto Trader is amazing, we love it!!! Its really designed to be set up as an extra income producing vehicle for our members that they can literally set and forget. We haven’t had any lags or failed orders at this stage and don’t expect to do so. We generally use market stops to ensure that we are guaranteed to exit our trades, that sometimes means on the lower volume ALTs our fill price can vary a bit to what the order was, we are aware of this and are just a bit tighter with our management to compensate… Other than that, Auto Trader has been smooth as silk and our members love it.
The future for Margins Signals… Well, sooooo many plans and ideas. Already, some are coming along nicely… We are currently writing a Trading Course, its reasonably compact but will cover key areas such as technical analysis, reading price action, indicators, Mindset, Risk/Reward, Trade management, Finding a profitable edge, plus a few other gems. My co-founder has developed a great trading/tracking tool for all areas of your portfolio, this is soon to be sent off and developed into an App, the interface on this already looks amazing. We’re also looking and reintroducing forex signals soon, 1v1 coaching and mentoring. Plenty of other plans coming along too, its exciting times at Margin Signals.
SmartOptions.io: What is the most important thing you want your subscribers to know? Is there anything that makes you go nuts when reading it in your chat room?
Robbo [Margin Signals]: Hahaha, God help me sometimes….. The main things I drill in regularly is risk:reward, strike rate, compounding profits and most of all capital preservation. If you have a 1:2 risk reward and a strike rate of 70% for your trades, you will make a lot of money in the long-term… Block out the 3 or 4 losing trades in a row. Focus on a trade sample of 20 + trades… Also, trade quantity… You don’t have to always be in a trade… Its ok to not have a trade for a week. You can still make massive gains with 10 trades a month… ppl get hung up too much on trying to have multiple trades each day, it just leads to shitty trades and a poor strike rate
SmartOptions.io: Tell us a bit about your personal history as a trader. How did you come to trading and especially to crypto, assuming you started with fx first.
Robbo [Margin Signals]: Yeah, I came from the FX world, I’ve been trading full time for a living for approximately for 3 years. It offers an amazing lifestyle with flexibility, I wouldn’t change it for the world. I was introduced to Crypto in about March 2017 by my brother… Seems like most, I loaded up on a heap of shitcoins like they were candy… Lucky a lot turned out OK… From there I quickly transferred my TA skills to Crypto, made a few tweaks to my style of trading and, well.. the rest is history. I still trade forex, but Crypto is certainly my main game.
SmartOptions.io: Can you tell us about your personal views on the crypto ecosystem? What do you think about “the bubble”, how will crypto evolve and what is the missing link for mass adaption and the crypto takeover in your opinion.
Robbo [Margin Signals]: I don’t think the real “bubble” has happened yet, in fact, I’m sure of it. The combination of projects coming online (mainnets), some of these partnerships showing real-world use, and the SEC allowing institution money comes in will see a new level that will dwarf the last ATH. But, its going to take a little time… It is a little disappointing there are still so many “shitcoins” that haven’t died off yet… maybe that will happen after the next “bubble” pop, but from the ashes will rise the true blockchain projects and payment systems that will shape the world for generations to come….
SmartOptions.io: Last but not least, what are your personal gems – do hold any cryptos for the long-term with no intention to sell them in the short-term?
Robbo [Margin Signals]: I haven’t got too many holds just now, but I plan to start building them up again pretty soon actually. My little gems are (that I DO hold):
Matrix (See Coin check for Matrix AI Network here)
Origin Trail
Halo
On top of that, I plan to build and hold long term (dollar cost average as I go) VET, NEO, IOTA, ICX
SmartOptions.io: Thank you for your time, Robbo! It was a breeze (and happily didn’t leave the taste of a Foster’s).

One little bookshop repairs despair in search of books of Nobel Laureate
LiTTscapes - Landscapesof Fiction which treats with Naipaul and hundreds of other fictional works finds its place among a tribute to Nobel Laureate Sir Vidia Naipaul at Signature Stationary & Business Works
I was despairing. I was searching the bookshops to replace copies from my Naipaul collection that were borrowed and never returned. In any real country, the bookshops would be all over themselves to outdo the other in their displays of the works of the Nobel Laureate spawned by on and on its soils who had just passed. But not here. The biggest chain had none. It only stocked one that was on the school's booklist, I am told. After all, school books is the biggest market and reading is about commerce, eh, and well, the parents filling their children's booklist took those so there were none left, I am told. A few others had a few copies that had lingered in the back of stock rooms, and a couple that had remained on their shelves. I dreaded to ask for the works of the other Nobel Laureate, whose primary form was poetry and drama. I got a description from someone of what the shelves for local books in those stockrooms looked like, smaller than the little free libraries my friends were launching in different districts For The Love Of Reading. I know from experience with my own books that one has to beg and plead with the local bookshops to stock one's book. If one is lucky they may take one or two copies and unless one is are constantly watching their shelves once those are gone, well...
The bookshops borrow the shortsightedness of the education system and they both feed into the myopia of the society, chasing cheap paperbacks, and that only when they are in fad. I had long tried to stop shedding tears at the unending spiral or about despairing about the numbness about the institutions that are in name only. Hundreds of articles and book reviews and interviews and even a penning dozens of episodes of the television programme Booktalk and the society is yet still too deeply buried in the sands of ignorance. It is something tragic to have to add bookshops to the list of those institutions. The ones proactively promoting a culture of reading are less than the fingers on one hand. And then I came upon this that moved me to tears. Happy tears. One bookshop. It is not even a bookshop really, but labels iself a stationary supply store. 'We have no other branches. This is our only one,' the woman deputising for the owner told me. One bookshop had on its display, a tribute to the Nobel Laureate, Sir Vidia Naipaul, a photo encased, a few flowers below in reverence, and his books around. A handmade banner urges, "Support Our Local Writers". Below the photo was what moved me even more: at the base of the photo, and surrounded with the copies of the books written by Sir Vidia Naipaul was my compendium of the literary imagination - LiTTscapes - Landscapes of Fiction: the book hailed as the quintessential go to book for everything one wants to know about the literature of Trinidad and Tobago. How the works and thoughts of Sir Vidia Naipaul fits into and was born from and seeps into and out of the lifestyles and Landscapes of Fiction from Trinidad and Tobago.
youtube
Thanks to the little corner bookshop, Signature Stationary and Business Works in the Valpark Plaza where you can get a few Naipaul books and the book that puts him and the hundred others of our fiction writers in contexts of landscapes, culture, lifestyles. We are such a long way from the societies where bookshops are not only commercial entities but institutions of learning, relaxation and exchange, and we may never get there as the local indifference encourages and forces one to seek reading needs from online sources. We continue our journeys into the imagination this month of Patriots, with our LiTTributes to the NaTTion in our year of LiTTributes to the LaureaTTes at home and abroad in recognition of our distinguished literary and cultural heritage. Get your copy of LiTTscapes, and ask about LiTTours, LiTTeas and LiTTributes and how you can become a partner, sponsor or collaborator in our legacies of learning to redefining the role and function of the writer and literature in society. Radically Simple: AI Startup Makes 3D Motion Capture a Breeze for All
For animated characters to move us, they first have to move. But bringing virtual characters to life has never been a simple task.
Motion capture technology records and digitally replicates human movement to create 3D animations. Think of Andy Serkis’ work, transformed into Gollum, in the Lord of the Rings film series.
The problem is traditional motion capture relies on lots of expensive, bulky hardware. And it requires skilled professionals operating multi-camera setups, studio environments and special sensor suits worn by actors.
“All of that expense, skill and time is prohibitive,” said Gavan Gravesen, co-founder and CEO of RADiCAL. As its name implies, the New York-based member of NVIDIA’s Inception program for startup companies breaks with tradition. “We’re focused on delivering universal availability, seamless integration and speed — all at low cost,” he said.
The company’s AI-powered solution, driven by NVIDIA GPUs, only requires game developers, 3D graphics artists, filmmakers and AR/VR enthusiasts to have one physical item: a 2D camera, even one on a phone. No other hardware, studios or elaborate sensor gear are needed, which dramatically decreases the cost and effort involved.
Fast Motion Capture
Users anywhere in the world can upload their videos by smartphone or the web directly into RADiCAL’s cloud. The company processes the videos using AI and motion science to detect what’s there, represent human movement in 3D space, and even reconstruct what the camera can’t see.
The algorithms automatically adapt to different body proportions and human body movements, and create a model whose motion mirrors the video subject in 3D. While the model’s smooth motion makes the process look easy, it’s anything but.
“We integrate deep learning, robotics, computer vision and biomechanics, which required a powerful AI development environment,” said Anna-Chiara Bellini, co-founder and chief technology officer of RADiCAL. NVIDIA GPU computing plays a crucial role in making that possible.

Fast Iteration with TensorFlow and CUDA
In developing the AI, the first challenge RADiCAL faced, Bellini says, was the sheer amount of data to process. To develop their algorithms, a single still image could require analysis of up to 6GB of data. But with every second of motion, there are 120 frames, effectively creating a staggering 720GB of data.
Bellini and her team opted for TensorFlow to integrate GPU programming into their research process, giving them a “single execution model” for their entire pipeline. “With the use of ad-hoc kernels written in CUDA to supplement TensorFlow, we’ve come to a point where a simple kernel written in just a couple of hours can save us days in simulation,” she said.
To support its motion models, RADiCAL processes several frames in a staggered way on multi-GPU systems. “Technologies like the most recent generation of NVIDIA NVLink, supporting multiple Tesla V100 GPUs, make that possible,” Bellini said.
Using cloud-based, multi-GPU machines, Bellini and her team decreased the development cycle from ideation through deployment to production by 10x.
“NVIDIA GPUs allow us to work faster, explore more options and use the time of our machine learning engineers more efficiently,” she said. “It’s been a revelation.”
Ready-to-Use Animation Files
After a video is processed, RADiCAL offers live 3D previews presented side by side with the actual video footage through their website and its MOTiON app.
Users can also download animation files of their work in a format that is ready to use for 3D animation, augmented reality, VR, gaming engines and other 3D graphics programs and content channels.
RADiCAL has recently opened a public beta program for early adopters across creative industries. It’s aiming for a full commercial launch within weeks.
The company is one of the nearly 2,800 startups worldwide that have joined our Inception program. Through this program, NVIDIA helps accelerate startups by providing them with access to technology, expertise and marketing support.
