Calico Valley families: the Benassers

(a.k.a.: the Golightly Silk Cat family)

Itri Benasser is a second-year student at Country School. He plays the xylophone in band and loves hanging out with the other members of the band, especially Mei. Unfortunately due to a recent accident he has been left caring for his little siblings, but he has help from everyone in Calico Valley and his cousin, Violet Darzi, in Briarcliff.

Tayri Benasser is a butterfly at Country Kindergarten. She thinks she’s much more grown up than she really is, and resents Itri’s protectiveness of her.

Damya is a pupa at Country Kindergarten, and Izem is a larva.

They live with the Abecassis-Lyall family in the 1985 Deluxe Family House on 5 Orchard Road.

I made Lulu a fancy new dress! I adapted a pattern for an 1869 "Watteau" dress (shoutout to @realhistoricalpatterns for making these patterns so easy to access!) in vintage floral ribbon and some tailoring scraps, gave her a little charm crown, and even made her a little pair of shoes! My next project might be making her a little hoop skirt to fill out that underskirt better...

how to style black velvet elbow-length gloves?

Generally speaking, I do love the concept of Holly Golightly-ing it by putting extreme elegance (black dress, glittering tiara, gloves) into a mundane context (sunglasses, croissant in a paper bag and to-go cup of coffee) — can’t imagine anything more chic than that. Apart from that, three other looks immediately came to mind:

I. 🦪Venus de Milo, The Dreamers🦪

white sheets wrapped decoratively around the hip (low-rise, ideally belly button should be exposed), no other garments (save for the gloves of course). hair pinned up loosely with two strands framing the face, no or very minimal make up (tinted lip balm, curled lashes if unavoidable). bare feet. a scent that’s clear and light like glass upon which the light breaks (Boudoir, Womanity…). A shadow of Venus caught between dream and waking, unreal yet soft to the touch.

II. 🏹90s Amazon🏹

white blouse with rolled up sleeves and wide lapels (cotton or linen preferred, silk accepted. the sleeves should be rolled up at around elbow-height so there’s no flash of skin between blouse and glove), super high-waisted black trousers (leather, velvet). black boots with a slight heel (riding or ankle) or black loafers. hair brushed from the face, minimal eye make up (mascara, maybe a soft 90s style smokey eye) with lipstick with gold particles and a warm blush. Optional accessories: silk handkerchief close to the throat, gold button earrings. Warm-sweet-spicy perfume (Cinema, Obsession, Opium…). Artemis taking a break from hunting to channel Kate Moss.

III. ☕️Autumnal Noir☕️

big wool or cashmere sweater with pushed up or folded up sleeves (green, brown, beige, grey…), long pencil skirt (leather or wool, black, grey or brown. knee-length at least, but longer would be ideal. the silhouette of the skirt and gloves should contrast with the chunkiness of the sweater). any shoe with a vintage-delicate feel to it. porcelain make up (powder, red lips, mascara, liner optional), hair open or in vintage waves. Optional accessories: silk scarf to wrap around the hair, black purse, cat-eye sunglasses. A seductive, sophisticated fragrance (black orchid, lust, jo malone’s saffron…). The darling with the well-kept secret stepping out from behind the silver screen to have coffee.

Alexa Chung’s New Sleepwear Collection Is The Cat’s Pyjamas

Just as the temperature drops, Alexa Chung gives us yet another reason to hate leaving our bed in the morning. Today, the designer is launching sleepwear for the first time under her eponymous label and boy, does it make hibernating all the more tempting.

The collection, AC Sleep, is the creative result of Chung’s deep dive into what makes the perfect pyjama. Looking to historical references, the creative director drew inspiration from the likes of Victorian cotton nightgowns and oversized Dickensian shirts, creating a collection that recalls such cinematic sleepwear moments as Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly (that men’s white shirt and blue eye mask will forever be our bedtime style goal) and Grandpa Joe’s ankle-skimming white bed shirt in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.

At once nostalgic and contemporary, there are seven sets in total, coming in four colourways: pinstriped cornflower blue, brown paisley, pistachio, and Dijon yellow with contrast red piping. As well as two matching silk eye masks to ensure the best cat nap possible, there are two tie-up robes in the collection reminiscent of Hugh Hefner’s ’70s smoking jackets.

“I was always told that purchasing a good bed was a wise investment since you spend around a third of your life sleeping, and I’d like to think the same can be said about sleepwear,” Chung says of the AC Sleep launch. “I have spent a considerable number of hours mastering the art of sleep and can now, much like a cat, fall asleep in pretty much any given place at any given time. For me, sleepwear felt like the next logical step in the brand’s offering.”

To celebrate the launch, the designer is releasing a series all about slumber called ‘Sleep Talking with Alexa Chung.’ Episode one, ‘Bediquette’ starring actress Amber Anderson, can be viewed on Chung’s YouTube channel from 5pm today. Here’s a sneak preview of what’s to come…

While we’ll be hard-pressed to leave the comfort of our bed when wearing these pyjamas, we’ll be teaming the paisley shirts with leather trousers and Mary Jane heels for party season and, come summer, pairing the green camisoles with true blue denim and chunky sandals. Trust Chung to have every aspect of our wardrobe covered. Now, we’re off for forty winks.
