My Sumner High School Class of 1987 30th year reunion was last Friday. On my birthday. It was a good time.

I’ve been planning the 30th year festivities since last summer with a few other folks, and our preparation paid off. We started off in October 2016 with a very informal Homecoming gathering, and about 30 classmates attended. We rode a float in the Homecoming parade and got together before the big game. Six of us were all in the same kindergarten class. How great is that?

I was in a graduating class of about 250 students, and we typically have had good turnouts at our 10, 15, 20, 25, and now 30. Yes, we’ve had reunions every five years. Because we’re from a small town, and we’re awesome!

The official festivities were last Friday. The morning started out with some reunion golf, and Scott--my awesome husband who did not attend my high school but might as well have since he’s friends with all my classmates--agreed to play when one of the guys dropped out at the last minute.

Scott hasn’t played golf in almost 20 years. He was on the golf team in high school, and he played a little bit in his 20s, but he gave it up for all sorts of reasons. He had to rent clubs, and I guess the outing was a success, because since Friday he has purchased clubs, signed up for a tournament next month, checked out local courses, practiced at a local course, loaned his clubs to a young lefty on the driving range (and gave him tips), and watched The Golf Channel 24/7. All in less than a week. The man officially has Golf Fever. I’m happy for him. He was a good golfer, and he never should have given it up. #GolfWidow

The evening event was at The Elks, and about 85 of us had a blast over dinner and cocktails. We listened to live music from Aaron Elsworth, 80s music, took pictures in the photobooth, and gave away gift baskets. Several classmates brought me little gifts (mostly wine), and they all sang happy birthday. I swear I didn’t intentionally plan the reunion on my birthday--it was just a date that worked best for all those planning it--but I must say it made for one of the best birthdays ever. It’s going to be hard to top!

At 11:00 pm we had to clean up (I LOVE seeing men vacuum), and about 20 of us went down the street to continue the party and sing some karaoke. We closed the bar down, and I finally fell into bed around 3 am. 

It was a fun and very successful night. We should probably do this every year. We ain’t getting any younger.
