We awoke this morning to clear blue skies. As all the cloud and mist has disappeared we could see the surroundings much more clearly. Although this old tea factory building is on a hill, to one side there is a hillside full of tea plants.

The outside of the building retains the factory appearance as it has not been altered.

Inside, the hotel is of a high standard with the old packing area being used as the bar. The bedrooms are where the drying racks were stacked. The refurbishment as a hotel works really well retaining parts of the factory for interest like a huge engine visible in the basement from all floors turning huge ventilation fans which were part of the tea factory process.

As we travelled into Nuwara Eliya this morning we got a splendid view of the hotel in the sunshine:

We then had a leisurely morning in the town which was established by the British in the 19th Century. It is referred to in Sri Lanka as “little England” and we could see why. The cool climate compared to lower areas is a relief to hot and humid conditions. It has a horse racing circuit and we passed people training for a polo match on their horses. We also saw a golf course in the middle of the town. We drove east to have a short boat ride on Lake Gregory. The green grass and houses often built in a British style which surrounded the lake, reminded us of places in England. Back in the main town we visited Victoria Park.

One end of the park is near a huge covered market which we took to be the wholesale market for fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. Opposite the market is one of the colonial buildings - the Post Office which is fully operational with a 1929 post box.

Not too long after we returned to the hotel, it began to rain heavily. The visibility was poor when we arrived back with low cloud as we had seen the previous day. After a leisurely breakfast we made the relatively short drive further south and up into the higher levels of the Hill Country and the multitude of tea plantations. We headed for the Nuwara Eliya, the capital of the tea industry in Sri Lanka.

The height here is 1868m which results in a huge contrast in the temperatures and humidity.

On the way we stopped at a tea plantation and had a tour of the factory. It was really interesting to learn about the production of the different types of tea and also to sample a few. After this refreshing visit we continued to climb the zigzagging road to Nuwara Eliya where we headed to the golf club for lunch. Would have been great to have played a few holes but alas no time!

After lunch we walked around the town, often referred to as ‘Little England’ due to the plethora of colonial bungalows, traditional English style post office, well-tended box hedgerows and some pretty rose gardens.

As there is a full moon, today is a poya day in Sri Lanka when no alcohol can be purchased or consumed in public, including hotels. This has our northern and Scottish friends in a near state of panic! (not that I’m stereotyping, of course!).
