Fore the Love of the Game
Pictured above: Ryan McDonald.
Anything can be a golf course, even a pasture that holds nothing but farm animals. Wenham Golf Club is the result of aspiring young golf caddies who needed a place of their own to golf. What was once the Tarr’s family pasture was soon established into Wenham Golf Club in 1899. Throughout generations the club was passed down and able to survive with the growing popularity of golf. Fast forward to today to a course that hosts 350 members a season but still welcomes the public with restricted hours, making them a semi-private club. The rolling greens take you through 18 well manicured holes, each offering a spectacular view. One very passionate employee for the club is Ryan McDonald, the Head Golf Professional working in his 8th season. McDonald has an impressive golf background that started from a young age. He grew up playing on Hillview Golf Course in North Reading, MA where he fell in love with the game and soon decided that he wanted to make a career out of his passion. McDonald attended Salem State for his undergrad but decided he wanted more and transferred to the Golf Academy of America in Orlando, Florida where he finished his degree. His talents pushed him to turn pro at 21 and he received his Class “A” card from the PGA of America in 2005. Throughout his young career he made a name for himself and shared his talents with numerous golf courses including ones in Vermont and Florida. But for the last eight years he has been head golf pro at Wenham Country Club in addition to being Gordon Colleges golf coach. McDonald has a passion for teaching anybody the game of golf, hoping to show them the light it brought him at such a young age.
Q: When do you typically open and close for the season?
A: We are basically open April 1st until December 1st.
Q: What does a typical day for you look like?
A: I’m usually here from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. I typically come in in the summer around 9:30 a.m. We have the biggest junior program in New England so every night we have kids programs. Throughout the course of the day I’m giving lessons to members and also running tournaments, we have a very heavy tournament schedule here. Then basically every night from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. we have kids programs. A lot of teaching and a lot of kids.
Q: For the tournaments are they members only or can non members play?
A: We have 350 members here so it’s very member oriented even though the public is welcome at certain times. But the weekend is member only until noon. All the member tournaments take place on weekend mornings. Then we have about 15-20 other outings that are public.
Q: When is your busiest month for golf?
A: End of June to mid September is really our busiest time.
Q: What are some of the most important things you have learned about the industry and from those around you?
A: The owner here has done a nice job of teaching me about value. I’ve worked all over the country including poor rural areas. I was always cost conscious and I often used discounts. Whether it be for the clothing in the pro shops or even the greens fees at certain times. The owner here basically never discounts anything, everything is always the same price. I’ve learned that people actually appreciate that, they always know what the price is going to be. Golf is so popular right now that people will pay the appropriate prices so you don’t have to discount them.
Q: What is it like to work for a family run business?
A: This property has been in the family for 250 years, so to work for a family now is something I had never done before. I always worked for a board or board of directors or owners but now I work for a family business. I learned a different side of business.
Q: Being head golf pro how are you able to connect with the members, guests, and anybody else you work with?
A: Part of being a golf pro is building relationships. Typically you’re at a club for many years so the members become family. It’s like I have a bunch of moms and dads and uncles. They get on your nerves just like your family but I really am able to feel that connection with them.
Q: What are daily challenges that you face over the course of a season?
A: Definitely challenges with the weather. Two summers ago we basically had a lake out front and then we’ve had years where we had no rain or when we lost our irrigation system. That was a battle. The biggest challenge here though is honestly keeping the members happy. They can be difficult because they’re are so many of them and they all want different things.
Q: Do you feel like you are losing money from the public when they can’t come in because of weather or do you feel like you are well set with having the money in from the members?
A: No, it’s still concerning to us because we have an interesting financial dynamic. Every afternoon throughout the year we have leagues here so that’s a humongous money maker for us. The member money we are able to get in January or February so we already have their money for the start of the season. But it is still important to make the other half with nonmembers.
Q: Do you only focus on the duties of Head Golf Pro or do you help out in other departments?
A: Each staff member has their own duty. The superintendent has his grounds crew out working, there’s usually a specific guy cutting the cups, a specific guy mowing. But I’ve done everything in this business so in times of need I’ve cut cups, helped with the greens mower, and helped anybody else that may need it.
Q: What does your off season typically look like?
A: I work for 8 months straight and then have 4 months off. I spent 15 winters in Vero Beach Florida and worked there for many many years but I got married and had kids and the wife said no more.
Q: When is your favorite time to golf?
A: The fall, I don’t like the extreme heat but I don’t really like the cold either. I’m kind of a wimp now!
Q: What are you looking to achieve in years to come?
A: My biggest passion is teaching kids so my goal is to keep introducing the game to as many kids as possible and help them fall in love with golf.

James D. (Jim) Edwards, Jr., former top executive with Arthur Andersen & Co. and influential Atlanta civic leader, died July 15, 2023, in Tallahassee, Florida. He was 79.
A loving husband and father, Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sharon Bordelon Edwards, son David Lee Edwards of Charlotte, NC, sister Carolyn Edwards Smith (Larry) of Greenville, SC, two grandchildren, Mary Zipporah Edwards of Charlotte, NC, and David Basile Edwards of Washington, DC, nephew, Ryan Smith of Greenville, SC, and nieces Nicole Ferris of Jupiter, FL, and Erin Adams of Tallahassee, FL.
Jim was the son of Dr. James D. Edwards and Elizabeth Reynolds Edwards, and was born in Cleveland, TN, on November 4, 1943, and raised in Greenville, SC. He graduated first in his senior class from Bob Jones Academy, where he was elected senior class president and president of the student body. He graduated with a degree in Accounting, with honors, from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.
Jim spent his entire professional career with the public accounting firm Arthur Andersen & Co. He was hired as a staff accountant in 1964 and began a stellar rise that would lead to the No. 3 position in an organization with more than 85,000 employees operating in 84 countries. Before he reached the age of 30, he was admitted to partnership in 1973, making him the youngest ever to achieve this level. In 1979, he became the Managing Partner of the Atlanta office and ushered in an era of unprecedented growth. During his tenure, the office prospered and expanded from less than 400 to more than 900 professional employees. Arthur Andersen, as the largest such firm in Atlanta, grew to nearly twice the size of their closest competitors, and were auditors of over 40% of the top 50 public companies in Georgia. In 1987, when he was 44 years old, Jim became responsible for managing North American operations comprising 85 offices and 20,000 employees, and was elevated to Arthur Andersen's Executive Committee. In 1989, he became Managing Partner for North and South America. Until his retirement in 2002, he served as Managing Partner for Global Markets.
Jim was generous in devoting time and resources to numerous civic and charitable organizations in the city he loved - Atlanta, Georgia. His service included terms as Board member or Chairman of numerous nonprofit organizations, including Central Atlanta Progress, Metropolitan United Way, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Metro Atlanta Salvation Army, Atlanta Junior Achievement, National Junior Achievement, Woodruff Arts Center, and the Cousins Family Foundation.
At the conclusion of his career with Arthur Andersen, Jim served on the Board of Directors of various publicly traded companies, including IMS Health, Inc., Crawford & Company, Cousins Properties, Inc., Huron Consulting Group, and Transcend Services, Inc.
Jim enjoyed competing in tennis and was the perennial champion of the Atlanta Country Club members' tournament. Golf was another favorite pastime, with annual trips to Scotland to play the old courses, and frequent rounds played with his wife at their home courses on Spring Island, SC, and Placida, FL. When he turned 50, he celebrated by making a coast-to-coast motorcycle trip from the Statue of Liberty in New York City to the Santa Monica pier in California. In later years, he enjoyed hiking in Colorado and spent many summer months there.
Jim was a man of rare qualities, capabilities, and interests. His life exemplified success achieved through dedication, integrity, and hard work. His professional accomplishments, outstanding character and sterling personal conduct inspired and impressed his employees, peers, business associates, and virtually everyone who came to know him. He made immense and lasting contributions to his employer, community, family and those who were fortunate to be his friend. In his passing, the world lost a true leader and a man of accomplishments; one who lived a principled life, faithfully followed Christ, and rejoiced in helping others.
A memorial service will be held at the Saint Mark United Methodist Church of Atlanta at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in memory of James D. Edwards, to Mayo Clinic for Alzheimer's Research, Mayo Clinic Florida, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32224.

James M. Barry, Sr., age 83, of Ellisville, Missouri passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 9, 1940 to Vincent and Lorraine Barry (nee Decker).
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Page Barry (nee Myers); loving children, Robin (Robert) Gerchen, Jim (Sally) Barry, and Jennifer (Garland) Hines; treasured grandchildren, Allison (Christian) Meyer, Robert Hancock, Alexandra Gerchen, Jean-Martin Gerchen, Jack Barry, Hannah Barry, Thomas Barry, Joseph “Vance” Watkins, Nicholas Watkins, and James Watkins; dear brother, Vince (wife Patricia survives) Barry; and a host of other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vincent Barry; and mother, Lorraine Barry.
According to Jim, he was the favorite child (I believe Uncle Vince might agree). He and his brother grew up above The Copper Kettle, a tavern his parents owned. He was a caddy at the local golf course and soon became very good at the sport. His love for golf continued throughout his life even in his waning days when his grandsons would come over to keep him company and watch golf on tv with him.
He attended Cincinnati Academy of Commercial Art following high school and soon landed a job at Maritz in St. Louis, while fulfilling his commitment as an Air Force reservist. It was at Martiz that he made lifelong friends – Tom Lavelle, Herb Rose and Rich Avett. He and Herb Rose went on to found Barry, Rose & Associates and from there he became the creative director at Herman Marketing where photography became his main focus.
His proudest freelance project was the creation of the City of Ellisville logo which is still used today.
In his younger years, he collected beer cans and was a proud member of the Beer Can Collectors of America. More recently, he enjoyed woodworking, especially turning bowls, carpentry and cabinet making, buying and reselling antique tools.
Of late, he was very proud member of the American Legion, Post 556.
Jim was well known by his family and friends for his very timely sense of humor, throwing in zingers when you’d least expect it. Granddad was also a wonderful, creative soul leaving behind beautiful gifts for his children and grandchildren including paintings, hand-turned wooden boxes, bowls, ice cream scoops and ink pens as well as furniture and cabinetry in our homes.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the following charities:

Mission Resort + Club – Known for Golf is also a Perfect Getaway for Racquet Sports Enthusiasts
Highly acclaimed for its championship golf and elegant amenities, Mission Resort + Club has also established itself as a perfect destination for racquet sports enthusiasts. Whether you play tennis, pickleball, or beach tennis, they’ve got you covered. Nestled among the rolling hills of Central Florida's Lake County, the resort features six Har-Tru Green Clay tennis courts, a Laykold all-weather court, four pickleball courts, and beach tennis courts for singles and doubles. Take A Lesson Regardless of your talent level, there is a place for you to flourish as former Bolivian Davis Cup player Cesar Villarroel operates an academy. Listed among the Top 100 Tennis Coaches in the USA by Peterson's Tennis Camps and Clinics, Villarroel guides a team of three other professionals to assist him in offering private lessons and clinics in all three of the racquet disciplines. "We have a lot of programs at that we offer for the members and also for non-members alike," said Villarroel, who is longtime Director of Racquet Sports at the resort. "We host clinics and spend a significant part of the day providing private and semi-private lessons involving two players. so, bring a friend. Villarroel is a USPTA Elite professional instructor certified through the National Endurance Fitness Training Association and the Professional Tennis and Pickleball Registries. While tennis has been a dominant factor throughout his life, he is excited to be working in two other sports that have exploded in popularity worldwide in recent years. Mission Inn + Club Tennis Academy, led by Bolivian Davis Cup player Cesar Villarroel. Cardio Tennis "We also offer cardio tennis - and that is for players who want to get in better shape. It's not a lot of technique correction, it's mostly drills with intervals, five minutes at full speed then one minute rest. The goal is to get the heart rate going high and then slowing it down. It's a good workout. The average player probably burns at least 500 calories in a one-hour clinic." The Place For Pickleball And Beach Tennis Pickleball has been the fastest-growing participatory sport in the United States for the last three years. Beach tennis is now poised to take off in North America after surging in popularity throughout Europe, especially in Italy, Brazil and Spain. "With pickleball, assume that I have a clinic of eight players," said Villarroel. "I can teach them the basics in probably 40 minutes and then they will be able to play a match. So, they learn in one day what in tennis would take probably a month before you could take part in a rally. That explains the popularity of pickleball." Think of Pickleball as the intersection of ping pong, badminton, and tennis and was invented by three vacationers on Bainbridge Island near Seattle. Beach tennis, however, combines elements of tennis and volleyball and, as its name suggests, takes place on sand. The sport is now played in over 50 countries by more than half a million people. "Here in the United States, beach tennis has just started, and it's huge," said Villarroel. "One of our pros plays professional beach tennis, so we are creating a training center here and will offer complimentary clinics to grow interest and participation in this fun and healthy pursuit. Mission Resort + Club Resort Offers So Much To Do If you live in visit Central Florida or are planning a visit and want a memorable experience, then this is the perfect destination for you. Features include fine dining with four restaurants, two lounges, and a poolside bar. In addition to championship golf, tennis, pickleball, and beach tennis, the property features jogging and cycling trails, volleyball courts, an outdoor pool, a spa, a fitness center, and a marina offering pontoon, bass boats, and kayaks for eco-touring. More than 30,000 square feet of well-appointed indoor and outdoor event space is available for meetings, banquets, holiday parties, weddings, and special occasions. A Golfers Paradise Awaits Located in the town of Howey-in-the-Hills, Mission Resort + Club is just a 35-minute drive northwest of Orlando or an 80-minute drive northeast of Tampa, and it is home to two championship golf courses, which are wonderfully complementary. The El Campeón (The Champion) layout, built in 1917 by George O’Neil, is one of the oldest courses in the South with a classic design featuring unusually sharp elevation changes in the typically flat central Florida terrain. It plays host to multiple professional, college, and high school tournaments. Las Colinas (The Hills) was created in 1992 by former PGA Tour winner Gary Koch, and it lives up to its name with wide fairways rolling over gentle rises. Both courses feature undulating greens surrounded by tropical vegetation and incorporate large water hazards on many holes. Florida's Premier Golf Destination Resort If Tennis and Racquet Sports Is Part Of Your Plan, Then Cesar Villarroel Is Your Man! "Every week, we have 70-80 players on our tennis courts and, if you also count our clinics, that number is probably over 100 players every week," said Villarroel. “With 4 instructors and so many courts, we have room for more.” Early birds bear the summer heat and start playing as early as 6 a.m., and afternoon activities, including junior clinics, to introduce youngsters to the game. "We start teaching at seven in the morning and the last lesson of the day begins at seven in the evening because we are here to accommodate and exceed the needs of our resort guests and those who want to enjoy playing the games.” For more information, please visit missioninnresort.com/resort/activities/tennis Photos courtesy of Mission Resort + Club. Top Spring Break Destinations in 2022
We've compiled a list of some of the best spring break locations from across the globe to help you plan the ideal getaway. These locations are sure to provide a fun and memorable experience!
Spring break is an excellent opportunity to travel and discover new destinations with your family. But how do you choose a destination?
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua's laid-back beach town, may not be the first spot that springs to mind when planning a spring break holiday, but it is a must-see. This hidden port-meets resort is ideal for party animals looking to relax in style, with world-class surf breaks, gorgeous beaches, lots of water sports, and vibrant bars.
Away from the beaches, San Juan del Sur is a famous site for beach horseback riding. This is an excellent activity for couples since it lets you witness the sunset and enjoy the scenery.
A catamaran cruise is another popular activity in San Juan del Sur. These trips are a terrific opportunity to view the nearby locations and are also extremely inexpensive.
There are also several lodging alternatives in San Juan del Sur, ranging from luxury hotels to modest hostels and guesthouses. Many of them have pools and are pretty inexpensive!
Asheville is routinely named one of the finest family-friendly communities in America because it offers lots to offer both kids and adults. The region is home to some of the most fantastic BBQs in the nation, world-class museums, art galleries, and a flourishing cultural community. Choose from various free outdoor family activities, such as bocce ball and frisbee golf. Discover the city's many parks and greenways, including the picturesque Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville also has the state's largest and busiest fireworks show, the largest astronomical telescope in the western hemisphere, and the most well-stocked public aquarium. The requirements are extensive, but the enjoyment begins when you touch down.
If you're seeking the ideal spring break 2022 location, Tampa Bay is the place to go. It's a tropical paradise with beaches that seem straight out of a Corona commercial and tropical-themed activities for the whole family to enjoy.
A spring break vacation to Tampa is an excellent chance to see a more open city than other Florida attractions, such as Orlando and Miami. The town has lots of traditional cuisines (more on that later) and a vibrant party culture that isn't only for the young!
If you're traveling with small children, try stopping by the IKEA Tampa Kids Academy. This venue offers a variety of free kids' art activities for the whole family to enjoy, such as wood workshops, cookie baking, and a chunky blanket workshop, to name a few.
Rio de Janeiro should be at the top of your list if you're searching for an off-the-beaten-path exotic spring break vacation. With a busy nightlife, friendly inhabitants, fantastic beaches, and various outdoor activities, this place is likely to be the best spring break getaway.
It's a city, unlike anything you've ever seen before. It's recognized for its bustling nightlife, world-famous samba parades, and beautiful beaches.
The city also has some of the most beautiful landscapes in Brazil, notably the massive Cristo Redentor atop Corcovado mountain and the panoramic vistas of Ipanema Beach and Copacabana. If you're searching for something unusual to do in Rio, take a nighttime tour of the Botafogo bar area or the clubs that line Lapa.
When you're ready to start organizing your spring break vacation, enter your travel choices below and let a ViaHero local travel planner do the rest. We'll create a customized Rio de Janeiro itinerary for you, as well as suggestions and maps based on your preferences!
