New Year, New Collection

A lot has changed since my last post. After building my jewelry bench, my collection of tools and supplies has grown - I bought a torch, bracelet and ring mandrels, hammers, new pliers, and discovered a home friendly acid pickle bath. I use citric acid powder that is basically lime juice in powder form. I didn’t want to have anything too toxic as my studio is in my home. Now that I have a fully functioning studio, 2014 started out by working on a very broad range of jewelry, to narrowing that down to focus my energy on one specific style. In November I participated in SIERAAD International Art Jewelry Fair. This was my first major show since LOOT: MAD About Jewelry. There I showed a huge range of designs featuring shells, coral, lava, and some work from my golden bottle collection. Sometimes I would mix and match all of these elements together.

The biggest sellers at Sieraad were for sure pieces from my Golden Bottle Series. This collection repurposes beer bottle caps. I cover them in gold, and wrap them up into little Golden roses. I really fooled the audience at Sieraad; I can count on less than one hand the number of people that figured out what the material was. 

Participating in the show gave me great guidance on what people like and what they are willing to spend money on. Going forward, I am focusing on the Golden Bottle Series. I am simplifying my designs to a price point that is reasonable. I am also combining my Golden Bottles with semi precious gemstones. When combined with stones, the Golden Bottles are shown in all their glory.
