The Devil Wears A Suit And Tie
Rust Cohle x Reader (if you squint)
Word Count: 1.3K
Notes: I was listening to the song "The devil wears a suit and tie" and had a sick idea in my head, needed to get it out as soon as possible so let me know what you think :)
It had started out innocently enough. Rust watched as Billy Lee Tuttle strided out of Quesada’s office. An air of debonair followed the man like a second shadow almost making him miss the quiet woman following behind him, almost. Rust scanned over her quick, young, late 20s at most, pretty but unassuming in her demeanor. His eyes, always flickering beneath the surface, caught the way she carefully avoided looking directly at Reverend Tuttle. He filed it away, like he did everything else, his mind a database of half-formed connections waiting to coalesce into a larger picture.
“Reverend, reverend, please come quick…”
She was quiet as the reverend spoke to them, gaze watching between Marty and himself. Their interaction was brief, she gave a polite smile while the reverend shook their hands. Rust let his gaze fall to the necklace she wore. A soft gold chain, hanging from it was a triangular pendant with three pearls sat in another triangle formation. For a fraction of a second, a curiosity tugged at his chest. It pushed away as quickly as the irritation grew. The thought of a task force possibly coming in on the case was quick to occupy his thoughts.
“ ‘Cause I got something to admit…”
The case involving Reggie and Dewall Ledoux was all over the news. She watched it unfold from behind her desk, the tension rippling through the office like a storm on the horizon. Whispers of the detective's names were spoken in hushed tones. Something cold washed over her as she turned her eyes to Tuttle who wore a sullen expression as he watched the news relaying the events. He turned the television off, his gaze cut to her sharp, whatever emotion that he had once portrayed gone from his face as he told her to schedule a meeting with Governor Tuttle.
“I met a man out in the sticks…”
One evening, after another long day, she found herself at a small diner on the edge of town, picking at a plate of cold fries. The door chimed as it opened, and she looked up, surprised to see Detective Cohle walking in. She wasn’t sure if he’d remember her from when they first met but as his eyes locked with hers, a flicker of recognition passed through them. He hesitated for a moment before making his way over, his movements slow and deliberate as he sat in the booth across from her. They exchanged polite niceties, the kind of guarded conversation people have when they know they share something deeper but can’t quite name it.
They made small talk, how she was doing, where she went to college, her job as a secretary for the reverend. In the stillness of their small talk Rust exhaled a slight breath, as if he had decided on something. After a while, he spoke, his voice low and gravelly. "Tuttle’s involved in something deeper, something darker. It ain’t just about politics or religion. It’s organized, systematic."
He took a deep drag from his cigarette, exhaling the smoke like it was a confession. "You don’t get to where he is without dirty hands. Men like him don’t wear suits ‘cause they’re righteous. They wear ‘em ‘cause it hides the blood."
She looked at him, startled, her face pale under the light of the diner. The theories were outlandish to her ears, almost paranoid. The Reverend had been nothing but kind to her, offering her a good job and stability. Rust’s voice was steady, but there was a fire in his eyes she hadn’t seen before.
"Rust, that’s..." she trailed off, struggling to find the words. "That’s insane."
"Maybe," he said, his voice hardening, "but you’re too smart to not feel that something’s off. You know it."
They parted that night with the tension thick between them, as crazy as his ideas sounded, something made her stomach turn with dread.
“Foolish, foolish was I...”
A few weeks later, Rust shows up to the office for an official meeting with Tuttle. She watched as he entered the building, his presence tense, his face more worn than usual. After the meeting, he approached her desk, his expression unreadable.
He leaned down, his voice barely above a whisper. "You need to get out," he murmured. "Tuttle’s dangerous. You don’t know what you’re mixed up in."
Her pulse quickened, but she kept her face neutral, not wanting to draw attention. “Rust, I—”
“I’m not asking,” he interrupted, his gaze piercing. “I’m telling you. Get out while you still can.”
Before she could respond, Tuttle appeared in the hallway, his gaze sweeping over them. Rust straightened, his face hardening into a mask of indifference, but she saw the way Tuttle’s eyes lingered on their exchange. The reverend smiled, but there was something behind it—something darker.
“Damn my foolish eyes…”
She didn’t see Rust after the meeting with Tuttle. To her disappointment, he never showed up at the diner again either. Though Rust might have been gone, his words never left her head. A deep pit grew in her stomach every time she showed up to work, stomach twisting whenever reverend Tuttle flashed her a charming smile.
“Cause that man’s lessons had a price, oh sweet price..”
Tuttle offered to drive her home one night after a late meeting. She hesitated but accepted, not wanting to raise any suspicion. The resignation letter that sat neatly in a folder on her desk gone untouched, she would give it in tomorrow. Tomorrow she will be free of this sick feeling in her stomach.
The drive was quiet, the only sound was the soft hum of the radio. A haunting melody filled the silence between them, her fingers clenched on her lap. Tuttle drove steadily, his eyes fixed on the road, but after a long silence, he spoke. “You used to talk to Detective Cohle quite a bit, didn’t you?” His tone was casual, but something in the air felt off.
She glanced at him, her stomach tightening. "Yeah, we talked sometimes," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "He had some… interesting theories."
“Oh?” Tuttle’s voice was calm, almost too calm. “What kind of theories?”
She forced a laugh, trying to play it off. “Crazy stuff. He thought you were involved in some kind of conspiracy. He believed you were hiding something.”
Tuttle chuckled, but it was a hollow sound. “And what did you think of all that?”
She shrugged, her stomach twisting with unease. “I didn’t believe him. I mean, come on. It’s ridiculous.”
Tuttle smiled, but his eyes were cold. He didn’t say anything else, just kept driving, turning down a dark, unfamiliar road. The farther they went, the more her heart began to race.
“Reverend?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “Where are we going?”
His smile remained, but it didn’t reach his eyes. The song continued to play, the chords hanging heavy in the air.
“My sweet soul, everlasting, my very own eternal light…”
Fear gripped her, the realization sinking in. Rust had been right all along.
· · ·
As Rust Cohle moved deeper into the heart of Carcosa, the air grew heavier, thicker, like something ancient and rotten clung to the very walls around him. The winding path ahead narrowed into what Errol had called the "Bride's Path"—a sickening name that made Rust's skin crawl. The stench of decay grew stronger as he moved forward, stepping lightly, senses heightened. The walls seemed to close in on him, suffocating, and then the path opened into a small, cavernous chamber.
Rust’s eyes swept across the grotesque scene before him—mummified corpses. They were wrapped in bandages, old and tight against their bones, antlers protruding from their wrapped skulls. A glint of gold on one of the corpses caught in his sight. He stepped closer, eyes narrowing as he focused on the necklace that draped around the shriveled neck of the corpse. His breath hitched in his throat. It was a simple gold chain, the gold dirty and tangled, with a triangular pendant and three pearls in another triangle formation.
“The devil wears a suit and tie, saw him driving down the 61 in early July…”

Bees are a really popular motif in jewelry these days, it seems. They have been for a few years. I'm also seeing butterflies make a return. A couple of years ago, it was a struggle to find more than a couple of options for a butterfly necklace across multiple stores, and in gold, there weren't really options for butterfly earrings or rings. When I wanted a butterfly necklace after finishing my first degree, I had to get a bracelet charm ordered specially into the store from a catalogue. Now, if someone wanted a new gold butterfly necklace, their options in stores would be vastly expanded.
Bees have increased their numbers, too. A couple of years ago, there were small bee and honeycomb designs I saw, but now, there are larger ones, also, and more of them. It's interesting how individual bugs as motifs can trend like that. It causes me to wonder what other bugs will trend. In a couple of years, wouldn't it be cool to see more beetles, or maybe ants, or spiders? Will the selection of dragonflies expand from the few options in stores now?
What about other animals? There are often cat and dog motifs in jewelry, because they are popular with pet-owners. Didn't the elephant trend in jewelry a few years back? When I worked at a jewelry store the first time I was there, they seemed to just be phasing out the remaining pieces from an elephant trend. For my sibling's sake, I hope there is more snake jewelry soon readily available. They are right: there isn't much, except for very large pendants for very large chains, or snakes that are not close to anatomically correct. Even then, those don't have much selection either.
In a broader sense of jewelry trends, I think it would be nice to see gemstones become popular again. Pearls in irregular shapes had a moment a few years ago, so maybe something will happen to cause gemstones to do that, too. They seem to have a backseat to all-metal jewelry or pieces with diamonds or other white gemstones in the past few years. Part of my hopes for this is so selection will expand (selfish reasons) and part of it is because I wonder which gemstones other people I know would choose to wear (nosy reasons).
Maybe I'd like to wait a while before that, though. A lot of jewelry with gemstones right now is taking a shift into smaller designs than in the past few years, maybe for affordability since people are not in an economically good position overall. More pieces are also being made in silver plated with gold, like the necklace I bought on Monday. I really like it, but I hope the plating is good enough to last many years. I suppose it will be; I haven't worn the rhodium plating off of most other silver pieces I have. I like the affordability boost silver plated with gold brings, and that it allows yellow metal for larger styles to be stocked, even as gold and gemstone pieces get smaller and smaller.
I don't love thinking too much about trends in real time. I'm a little bit obsessed with trends of the past for previous decades, though. But when it comes to jewelry (of the sort that won't cause problems for my nickel contact dermatitis), there are only a few stores with a few pieces for each type of gemstone or motif each, if a gemstone or motif can be found at all at them. So, trends really dictate what a person can buy at that time, or how many hoops they'll have to jump through and how many weeks from a catalogue order they'll have to wait to get it.
#rubia speaks#unrelatable posting hours#marge simpson voice i just think they're neat#anyway these are good times for bee lovers who want cute necklaces. most of the bees look to be necklaces#some earrings though too. and one ring i've seen. this is the age of the bee#i'm waiting to get a gold butterfly ring until the right one comes out. i've seen one pop up but the shapes weren't quite right#i'm very particular about my metal simulacra of butterflies

Josh x Reader (f)

One Year Later
“Okay kiddo, today’s a big day. I mean it’s right up there with the day you were born.” Josh says, picking up your daughter out of her crib. “You’ll be hanging out with your Nana and Gram most of the day. But I get you all to myself this morning.”
Holding her and carrying her to the kitchen, he sits Odette in her highchair and goes to make breakfast for the both of them. He makes Odette pancakes, making sure to cut them up first, and cut up some strawberries and a banana. Sitting the plate in front of her, she immediately starts to shove the food into her mouth. Josh grabs his own plate and sits beside her.
“So what do you think? Did Papa do a good job with your pancakes?” He asks.
“Mmmm! Mmmm!” Odette says with a huge smile.
Josh grins and says, “Well I’m glad they’re up to your standards princess.”
They finish up their breakfast right in time. As Josh is putting the dishes in the sink, he hears a knock at the door. It’s Karen coming to help with Odette.
“Hey hun!” Karen says, hugging Josh. “Where is my Odie girl?”
Josh says, “Hey Mom, she’s in the kitchen, we just finished up our breakfast.”
Karen immediately goes to find her. Picking her up out of the highchair, she says, “Okay my sweet pea, let’s go get you a bath and get you all prettied up for your mama and papa.”
“Thanks again. I appreciate you coming and helping out.” Josh says.
“Oh it’s no problem. Now you go get yourself ready.”
Josh does as he’s told and goes to get ready. He takes a shower, styles his hair and starts putting on his outfit for the day. It’s a burgundy velvet jumpsuit with gold embroidery all over it. Golden sun beams branch out from the deep v cut. Little gold flowers placed along the bottom of the sleeves. Tiny pearl beads and dusty rose color rhinestones scattered perfectly between the sun beams and down the sleeves.
Stepping out from the bedroom, he goes to find Karen and Odie. He finds them in the living room. Odette is wearing a gorgeous little dress the same color as Josh’s jumpsuit. Her dress has a beautiful bouquet of flowers embroidered along the chest and little rhinestones that match Josh’s sewn along the hem.
“Hi my beautiful girl.” He says, bending down to pick her up. “You look absolutely breathtaking, stunning, gorgeous.” He tickles her belly, earning a stream of giggles.
“So tell me, how does Papa look?” Josh asks motioning to his outfit.
“Bootifu!” She says, clapping her hands.
“Awe thank you baby.” He says, before placing a kiss on her cheek.
“I guess it’s time to go ahead and head on over there.” Karen says. “Here, I’ll take her and you grab her diaper bag.”
With that, they leave the house and are on their way.
Sitting down at the vanity, you look at yourself in the mirror. Your hair is down with the side sections braided and tied in the back with a gold headband. You're not wearing very much makeup, just some mascara and a simple lip. Looking down, you grab your rose gold earrings and put them on. Next, you pick up your necklace, a gold chain with a vintage white cameo with roses on it. Putting it on, you gently touch the pendant and smile to yourself. You felt beautiful.
Standing up, you walk over to your dress. Before you can go to put it on, there’s a knock at the door. You say come in and your mom walks in with Odette. You smile and tears well up. She look so precious. You reach out to her and she leans toward you for you to take her.
“Hi my love! I missed you so much! Did you have a good time with Papa this morning?” You ask her. She cuddles into you and you snuggle her back. “Awe, I love you so much. Okay, here you go to Gram and Mama will put on her dress for you.”
You hand her back to your mom and go to put on the dress. It’s an off white lace dress with bell sleeves and flares out at the waist. Once you get it on, your mom helps you button up the back. Turning around to face your daughter, her whole face lights up and she waddles over to you, hugging your legs.
“Pretty! Pretty Mama!” She says.
“Thank you lovey.” You say bending down and hugging her back.
There’s another knock at the door. It’s Karen. When she steps in she looks at you and says, “Oh honey, you look beautiful.” Giving you a hug, she says, “He’s going to lose his mind when he sees you.” You chuckle and say thank you. “I came to tell you they're ready for you.”
You nod your head take a deep breath. “Okay. Let’s go.” You say with a huge smile.
Your mom and Karen take Odette and head out before you. You take one more deep breath, grab your bouquet of white roses and baby’s breath and walk out of the room.
As you walk down the hall, your heart starts to race. When you walk up to the double doors, you can’t help but smile as you look down at your bouquet. The door opens and music flows out. Looking up, there he is. Standing at the end of the aisle, your love of a lifetime. Making your way to him, you smile even bigger and giggle. He sees and giggles too.
When you get to him, you hand off the flowers and he takes your hands, giving them a squeeze. He whispers an " I love you”, and you whisper one back. The officiant begins to speak about love and the commitment you’re making to one another. It’s beautiful, then it’s time for your vows. Josh says that you are the love that he’s always searched for, yours is the face that he dreamed of, life with you is all he’ll ever need. You say that his love is worth more than you could ever express, your heart searched for his and now that you found him you would never let him go.
When you finished your personal vows the officiant asks you to repeat after him.
“I will stay by your side through it all, I promise you a lifetime whether long or short, I swear to you that from today forth my love will never be temporary.”
