God’s Own Junkyard

Depending on one’s outlook, this warehouse filled with handmade neon signs is either a delight or an assault on the eyes. Run by neon artist Marcus Bracey, God’s Own Junkyard acts as a combination of free art gallery, dealer and recycler of signs, and a prop shop for film and photo shoots.

Chris salvages old neons and architectural advertising from the streets and film sets, repairs them, and sets them up alongside a plethora of quirky art. Nearly everything ever advertised by neon must be represented in the collection, including diners, hotels, cocktails, karaoke, rock ‘n’ roll, pinball, disco, casinos, and even religious images. Of course, there are also plenty of references to less-respected businesses, with signage salvaged from or inspired by the dens of vice in old Soho.

God’s Own Junkyard really has to be seen for the full effect. Take the Victoria Line out to Walthamstow, walk out to the Ravenswood Industrial Estate, perhaps grab a drink at one of the neighbouring tap rooms, and then descend into this purple-tinged cave of wonders.
