Sorry, but does anyone even realize how horrifying this was to Phoenix??? (this dialogue was lifted from the anime)
I want to go in depth about this scene and how it tells us about Phoenix and his mental state...
ANALYSIS BELOW ⬇️
We have just established that Phoenix has a massive savior complex and a guilt complex. He constantly berates himself for not being able to work at his full ability despite falling off a burning bridge into frigid water 2 days prior. He literally could not get out of his bed until 1 day later, and that was while nursing a near-lethal fever and not having the strength to stand for a long period of time!!!
We know that Dahlia, when she wasn't Iris, was definitely emotionally abusive to Phoenix. She had a whole monologue telling him how useless and worthless he was, and how he could never be trusted to "care for a lady". While this happens, he just sits there and takes it, hinting that this may have happened before. Iris couldn't have played Dahlia ALL the time!
Phoenix clearly harbors (unneeded) guilt surrounding Mia's death, and feels inadequate as a person and caregiver to Maya because of that. He was very, very distraught when he found out about Maya's predicament, so much so that he abandoned all reason and attempted a hail-mary sprint across the burning bridge.
Godot knows (at least some of) this. He picks on Phoenix directly where he knows it will hurt him most.
He projects all his insecurity about Mia's death onto Phoenix, yes, obviously. That may be clear to Godot, but... These words obviously have a different and more harrowing effect on Phoenix.
Referring to Dahila's previous breakdown, you can draw direct parallels between what she says about Feenie and what Godot says about Phoenix. It gets so distinctive that they use the same descriptors at times!
Please keep in mind that Dahila's words have always stuck with Phoenix. He has directly berated himself using the same words Dahlia did.
So now, during this case, where Iris and therefore Dahlia are FRESH in his mind, where he already is scared for Maya's life, where his immune system and brain capacity have taken a huge hit, how do you think Godot's monologue would have affected him?
Godot, whether he knew it or not, parroted Phoenix's crazy abusive ex's worst insults (and by extension, Phoenix's worst insecurites) directly back to him during an already extremely trying time for him.
One of his biggest fears is causing/not preventing Maya's death. He is already drowning in guilt. Pray tell, how exactly would he react to a complete stranger reaffirming his worst fears and notions about himself??
I'll tell you how!
He'll internalize it. He won't speak to anyone about it. He will fully believe that Godot (and by extention Dahlia) were completely correct about him. We all know how CAGEY Phoenix is, you couldn't get him to talk about any personal matters unless you held a metaphorical gun to his head.
He will drown in this guilt, these feelings of inadequacy and fear, and he will STEW and ROT with them during his disbarrment as well.
And nobody will know the wiser. Because he thinks he deserves it.
(sorry for the long post, and if it's incomprehensible, i'm very sorry. am I missing anything?)
