Happy World Building Wednesday! What's your favourite legend, fairytale, story or prophecy from one of your worlds or from this one?

I’m going back to an old WIP for this one, and a story about the first mage. There’s different variations and interpretations of the story across different places and people. For all of them, the story starts with drought and with a woman going to the godmountain to petition them for aid.

In all of them, the gods at first ignore her.

Here the stories diverge. For one, she challenges the gods to a game of cards and cheats to win. She becomes The Trickster. This mage is beloved of thieves, chancers and mages alike. Magic is a useful thing, a weighted dice. A way to make sure you win, so long as you don’t cheat too often.

For the second, she challenges the gods to a duel and wins by skill alone. She becomes The Fighter. She is beloved of warriors, mothers and mages, and magic is prized as a useful tool, fairly won. A sharp-edged thing, used as is needed.

And for the last, the mage is a thief. She steals from the gods and she flees into the night, bringing magic to the world and scattering it as she escapes. But as well as magic she brings divine wrath. The Thief is beloved only of mages, and magic is a disreputable thing, to be used with caution.
