Chapter Update

Chapter 9 of There is  a Crack, A crack in Everything--That’s How the Light Gets In is finally up!

"She misses Dina and she doesn’t; she loves her and she wants to die for it. All that she's loved and cared for is gone and Ellie is paying the price for her last, biggest fuck-up."

THIS CHAPTER WAS SO GOOD! I liked the little bits of progress Ellie and Abby have made, plus that snowball scene memory was so CUTE ugh. and of course I'm going to talk about that ending, BECAUSE WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT YOU'RE SO CRUEL AAAAA 😭

what's really interesting to me is how you're handling both Ellie and Abby's take of Joel's death, especially Abby. the parallels of their anger are already so good in the game itself and I feel like even moreso in this fic. grief and loss had changed them both significantly, but with Abby seeing Ellie like this, I like to think it's kind of like seeing herself. after all, had Lev not been there, Abby would've killed Dina just like Ellie killed her friends.

that night had done no good to both of them, and I love how you make that clear. it haunts them in different ways but there's no denying that it's something they won't exactly get out of their mind easily. it's not just something you forget.

I literally had to change the entirety of my original draft and I’m so glad I’ve taken the time to put this chapter together. So I’m so glad you liked it because I do too 😭😭

The only thing I can say to your general thoughts about Ellie and Abby is that they’re still going through all the cycles of grief, Ellie more so than Abby. Abby thinks she’s over it, but she’s wrong; trauma takes years and years to process and heal from. She’d been fortunate enough to have Lev by her side to keep most of it at bay, but Ellie’s never gotten that kind of support system after’d she chosen to leave Dina.

So like, even if I generally intended to have this fic tell the story of Ellie’s recovery, in a lot of ways, it’s Abby’s journey to healing, too.
