Can you explain origins/reasons behind some of your female!Harry Potter name's? (Hippocampus, Halesia, Hilda, Hattie, Theia)
Oh, anon, you ask some hard questions.
When it comes to genderbenders, I like to keep my initials the same. For example, I like to turn HJP (Harry James Potter) into something simpler as HJP or JHP or I’ll use “Lily” or “Lillian” as a middle name instead of “James” while trying to keep a first name that starts with H. I prefer to keep the same first initial on first names, but I do find it’s hard to find good names that fit and make sense.
Hippocampus (female Harry Potter from An Agreement)
I feel it’s worth mentioning that I have only used this name once, and I regret it. I found the name while helping my pregnant friend, “Lucy,” look for baby names. Lucy was having a girl, and she wanted a “pretty” and “unique” name that no one else was sure to have.
Hippocampus was on the list for baby girl’s middle names – yes, Lucy was planning two or three middle names “just because.” The name stood out to me because it was the name of a former constellation, and I was dying to try my hand at a Regulus/female Harry pairing. (This was the first one of this pairing I posted.)
While I liked the name, people were quick to disagree and tell me how horrible it was. Over half the reviews and comments on FFN and AO3 had people ridiculing me for the name selection, which led to me having an anxiety attack and a breakdown – which is the reason I regret the name. I associate that name with those feelings. I have a sever anxiety disorder and Asperger’s, and those two don’t mix well. I feel some feelings very strongly, and I attach my feelings in an unusual manners.
Halesia
I’ve used this name many names. It’s probably one of my favorites. Halesia is a Latin genus of a shrub family – silverbells and snowdrops. I adore both silverbells and snowdrops in my flower arrangements. Also, I love the meaning snowdrop flowers. (For those that don’t know a snowdrop symbolizes rebirth and overcoming obstacles.) Also, it ties in with my headcanon that members of the Evans family are named after plants. (It’s an Evans tradition, so Mr. Evans’ name is a plant, not Mrs. Evans’. For Mr. Evans, I use Rowan or Forest because I haven’t found any flower-based names for a male that I like.)
Additionally, I like this name because it has a few nickname options such as “Haley,” “Hales,” “Sia,” and “Hally.”
Off the top of my head, I believed I used this pairing for first time in Enchanting. In that fic, I know Abraxas Malfoy used the pet name of either “silverbell” or “snowdrop” – I think “silverbell” over “snowdrop” without looking.
Hilda/Hylda
This is another name I really like and I’ve used multiple times. I feel it’s a good, strong and classic name. It’s something I can use the Potter family using with my headcanon. (Most of the Potters, have classic English names such as “James” and “Henry.” I’m aware of “Charlus” and “Fleamont.”)
My headcanon has led to an evolution in my thinking, I’m working a few ideas where female Harry has a name that doesn’t start with an “H” and isn’t a plant based name.
I don’t think I’ve used this name is a multiple chaptered fic yet, only ficlets and oneshots. The first time I used this name was in The Witch and Her Grimm.
The “Hylda” spelling is something I’m planning to use in a new crossover. Most characters in Game of Thrones use a “y” in place of an “i” in their names. I feel “Hylda” fits better than “Hilda” for this reason.
Hattie (female Harry from Perchance to Dream)
As far as I know, I’ve only used this name once. It’s been on my list since the beginning because it was nickname of “Harriette” or “Henrietta” that I liked, and I feel it’s close to canon. While it isn’t “Harry” – “Harrie” or “Harri” – it seems like a realistic choice.
Theia (female Harry from Wish Upon a Star)
This is one of the few times that I gave a female Harry a name that didn’t start with “H.” In the beginning, it was hard for me. I wrote using Harrii in my word doc. I would use the replace option to switch “Harrii” out with “Theia.”
I was drawn to the name Theia while designing an OC, a Sailor Senshi known as Sailor Theia. I created that character based of a hypothetical planet and the giant impact hypothesis. (Basically, Theia was a planet the size of Mars. Theia collided with Earth, breaking. The debris gathered around Earth and eventually formed the Moon and parts of Theia were left on Earth.)
In Greek Mythology, Theia was the Titanese associated with the Sun and she was the mother of Eos (goddess of dawn), Selene (goddess of the moon), and Helios (god of the sun).
With the hypothetical planet, it allowed me to keep a celestial connection for female Harry’s new name. It wasn’t an obvious one like “Vega” or “Venus,” but it was one. Even if I only knew it. Additionally, the mythology offered another connection to a celestial name since the Titanese was the mother of Helios, Eos, and Selene – with Helios and Selene having strong ties to the Moon and the Sun.
Also, I felt there was a symbolism in using Theia since female Harry was paired with Orion Black. The two of them would create a new “dawn” for the House of Black.
Other Names
If someone has a question on another name, just ask. I’ve used several over the years and I will be using some new ones.
Also, feel free to ask about genderbender names, like female Sirius or female Severus or female James. (Or other characters that I use in the future.)
