First of all, in all universes, they argue about smoking. Charles wants Arthur around for a long time, cares about his health, and puts up with most of Arthur’s shit, but the one thing they come back to is smoking.

In the couch au, Charles practically begs Arthur to start vaping instead. Buys him a vape for Christmas as an attempt to guilt Arthur into using it, but Arthur goes on smoking.

I think for a lot of things, they don’t have big blowout arguments. They’re both quiet dudes, so it’s a lot of quiet salt when one of them is angry or upset.

With the smoking thing, I think Charles will like, offhandedly mention it in a way that Arthur takes as teasing, not thinking about the care and concern and actual feelings behind it. Charles will kiss him and be like “god you taste bad,” or watch him go out for a smoke like “that shit will kill you one day,” or “when are you gonna quit?” and Arthur just shrugs and brushes it off as banter.

Until one day, when it’s cold out, Arthur comes in from having a cigarette on the balcony and he’s coughing and Charles kind of snaps a little. Charles is like ��For real, when are you gonna quit that shit?” and Arthur is like “I don’t know, never? I weren’t planning on it.” And it becomes a fight like

“What, you’re just gonna keep on doing it when you know it bugs me?”

“I didn’t know it bothered you so much.”

“How could it not?? It stinks, I can smell it all the time, you’re always coughing and complaining about having to go out, it’s full of toxins and chemicals –“

“Well fuck, I don't know, you never said anything –“

“- and all I can think about is how that shit is gonna kill you –“

“- it ain’t gonna kill me!”

“- and how am I'm not gonna get to spend the rest of my life with you cuz you won’t quit!”

And it never gets to full on shouting when they argue, but voices get raised… that time Arthur’s voice got small n a little sad, like, “you ain’t gonna spend the rest of your life with me.” Cuz he knows Charles will move on eventually…. He ain’t good enough for Charles, not truly… maybe that’s why he never thought of quitting…

I think their arguments tend to be like that – raised voices and disagreeing, taking some time to cool off, and then coming back and talking about their Feelings™. They both tend to quietly brood and it’s obvious when they’re upset, but the difference is that if you ask Arthur what’s wrong, he’ll tell you. Charles is the type to lie, be like “im fine” even though he’s clearly not – Arthur learns pretty quick to not push him on it, to say “Im here when you wanna talk,” and let Charles come around in his own time.

I also think that when Arthur is upset with Charles, he tells his friends before he tells Charles himself. He’ll get together with Sadie at her little kitchen table and vent to her over coffee, stress-vaping like a madman (vape don’t hit the way cigarettes do, but he makes do now). Her advice is always like “I think you should talk to him about it” and Arthur is always like “I KNOW BUT I DON’T WANT TO.”

I think another big thing they fight about is scheduling. They’re both very busy – Arthur works two jobs and does art commission’s on the side, and Charles’s law program is really full on, so they sometimes don’t get to spend a lot of quality time together. Arthur also has other partners he likes to make time for (Karen is a long-time fwb) so it’s hard… they’ve argued a couple times Being Present and Scheduling, cuz Charles tends to cancel dates because he gets anxious about studying…

But when they fight, it’s usually subdued, and they go away angry and come back feeling better and ready to apologize … Arthur is a little hard on himself, tends to blame himself and over-apologize and compromise on his emotions… Sadie points this out and he starts working to do better in that regard…

I think they don’t usually have angry sex or make-up sex, because they’re both quite level-headed and not spurred on by passion. When they make up, it takes them a little time to process things so they can’t jump right back in the sack right away… but when they do it’s always like, a little reverent, a little apologetic, them taking care of one another… slow kisses and gentle touches in the dark….

I also think that Charles is the kind to show, more than say his apology… so when they fight he like, never says he’s sorry after… instead, he’ll do something sweet to apologize, like… he’ll bring Arthur a frappuccino from Starbucks (Arthur’s guilty pleasure) or order dinner from his favourite Indian place….. just lil things

They have a big fight, once, with shouting. Charles wants to meet Arthur’s family, Dutch n Hosea, but Arthur isn’t ready. He ends up shouting like “they’re not even my real family, I don’t have a family!” and storming off…. When they make up, Charles buys Arthur a real fancy cast iron skillet… they end up going on a trip to visit Dutch n Hosea that summer…….
