god i can’t stand people who want to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to body positivity/neutrality. you see it so often in the ‘wellness influencer’ space who want the clout or aesthetics of self love and ‘all bodies are good bodies’ or whatever but still have a deep, fear-based desire to be conventionally attractive that they have no interest in actually deconstructing b/c then god forbid they might not be motivated to spend the all the time and money they do maintaining their looks and as a result become *gasp* ugly!!!!! I saw this fucking tiktok where this girl was like omg i found the most perfect wedding dress except this one thing! I’ll never be able to wear it now! and it was just that her ass didn’t look round in it. like. WHO FUCKING CARES. but the kicker was that all the comments were this sickly-sweet derision like ‘‘no shame in hip dips girlie but this dress is NOT doing you any favours’‘ so which is it? is there no shame or is it embarrassing for her to be seen like that. and all the comments were so highly critical with such precision and some of them had bizarrely high effort tips and it was just so weird because it was one of the worst communal feed-back loops of self hate i had ever seen but they were all prefaced with lip service to body positivity. like. the cognitive dissonance is insane. And the problem isn’t that they’re not completely there or whatever, nobody is but its they way that it’s framed as compatible with radical self acceptance like it reminds me of the whole skincare as selflove thing. Like i get the appeal of ritual and feeling cleansed or whatever i do but if you’re spending like an hour/day and hundreds of dollars on skin care products (most of which have dubious evidence behind them at best) in hope to delay wrinkles or fight back acne hm how do i say this delicately. you have very poor self image. and that’s fine. god knows it’s not an insult but it’s not selfcare it’s self-destructive behavior. And this also manifests in still highly praising and reward conventional bodies. and they’re always like oh what’s wrong with compliments it’s all positive but no. bc if every skinny girls comments are ‘body goalsssssss’ than that inherently implies a superiority. and it’s just. it reminds me of like the white feminism of the early 10s that was like i’m a feminist but i’m not hairy or manly or fat or angry or a dyke. well i am. so now what?
