Careful, This Beast Bites
Drifter Lēna meets someone shockingly familiar the first time she dares to approach Kullervo’s Hold. A voice she never thought she’d hear again. A voice she’d never wanted to hear again.
TW:
Brief mentions of canon-typical violence.
Very, very brief, non-graphic mentions of abuse.
With that out of the way, the fic begins under the cut.
The first time the Drifter ventures to the large floating island dubbed ‘Kullervo’s Hold’, she has little idea of what to expect. Her Kaithe—still unnamed, she cannot, for the life of her, figure out what to call the beast—lands atop the tallest tower, and as Lēna dismounts, she hears the sing-song voices of children chanting. From what she can gather, they’re telling tales of the soldier imprisoned here, the one for which the island is named. She shakes her head decisively, a short huff escaping her. Kids will be kids, she supposes, before eying the path into the gilded tower. That must be where she needs to go, and go she does. As she walks through the hall, leading towards the circular arena, the Drifter notices a figure seated at the edge of the odd section of tower that overlooks the arena. She tilts her head, his blue ceramic skin resembling that of any other Duviri citizen, though she cannot shake the stinging feeling that she knows him.
“Do not block my light.” The annoyed scoff catches her attention. Something about his tone, his inflection, the condescension in his voice strikes a knowing chord within the woman’s mind. Her eyes narrow. No. Before she can stop herself, her hand darts to her trusted Sirocco, the pistol that has saved her time and time again at the hands of the Dax soldiers hunting her day in and day out. Her blood chilling like ice, she fires a single shot into the man’s forehead, though the bullet passes through as if he’s not sitting in front of her. Fury rises within her, and she simply turns away, whistling for her Kaithe. The beast canters towards her, hooves clopping against the stone floor of the outcrop, and she jumps onto its back, pushing it into a gallop towards the edge of the island. As her Kaithe spreads its wings, as she feels the wind lash against her face, as it whips through her short hair, Lēna only has one question, hissing it to whatever sadistic deity clearly has it out for her.
“What the fuck is Ballas doing here?” The only answer is the whistling of the wind and the strong beating of her Kaithe’s wings against the air currents.
The next time the Drifter brings herself to return to the cursed prison, she really doesn’t have much of a choice. It seems Lodun enjoys a fight, and also seems to believe that Kullervo will have his uses. She huffs in partially irritated amusement as the so-called Prince of Fire insults the Warden. So that’s his title here. The Warden. Fitting, he always enjoyed controlling anyone he could, what better subject—victim—than a criminal with no means of escape? Once again, she walks onto the area overlooking the arena, once again she hears his deceptively elegant, definitely grating voice, filled with clear disdain as he notices her presence.
“What are you? Beggar, lunatic, or monarch clad in rags? Ugh. Trouble me not, chimaera.” Lēna scowls, speaking curtly. The sooner she gets this over with, the sooner she can move on and forget that he’s here. The sooner she can pretend that Ballas’s appearance—though, she’s not entirely sure that this is Ballas, he certainly doesn’t look like him, and from what Mag told her, he’s dead—doesn’t completely gnaw at her mind, reminding her of the months, perhaps longer—time is subjective to her anyways, and she didn’t care much about what day it was when she was running for her life—that she spent trying to fix what he ruined.
“I’m here for the prisoner. I’ve heard he’s a formidable opponent.” Not-Ballas rolls his eyes, though snaps an impatient response.
“I keep him locked up here for his own safety, and that of all Duviri. Care to find out why?” The Drifter’s lip curls into a half-snarl, matching his tone closely. If this is how he’s going to act, she’ll give it right back. Regardless of if this ‘Warden’ is Ballas or not, his voice is already getting on her nerves.
“Obviously.” She’s allowed down into the arena without much argument—he seems to enjoy watching the prisoner get punished, she realizes with a sinking feeling—and as she fights with Kullervo, Lēna finds that she has a rather difficult time blocking out the Warden’s taunts. It’s as if she’s back in the Origin System again, and by the time she’s defeated the criminal—though, it was really more of an intense sparring session…seems they both needed to get some anger out—her mind is clouded with white-hot fury. Instead of leaving the island, as she’d planned, she stalks back towards the Warden’s viewing point. She knows before she even pulls her swords out that the blows will simply glance off of him, unable to mar his ceramic ‘skin’. But, she can’t deny a certain, momentary satisfaction as she lands several slashes across his gilded torso. As with most things, however, the satisfaction is only fleeting, and as she rides off, following Lodun’s next set of instructions, Lēna only finds herself more frustrated, angry, and confused than before.
The third time, she’s determined to get to the bottom of this, to find out what the hell he’s doing here, in her domain. The gray sky serves as a perfect accent to her mood as she explores the arena, realizing that, outside of each cell, there are plaques detailing Kullervo’s crimes. She remembers what Acrithis had told her once, realizing that the prisoner was once a member of the Origin System. The Drifter smirks as she reads, finding that she and the attempted assassin would’ve gotten along well, had they been around at the same time and place. As she reaches the end, Lēna finally realizes who, or rather what, the Warden is. He’s little more than a manifestation from Kullervo’s mind, a twisted version of the Executor that he had attempted to kill. She mutters to herself, her voice raspy from lack of use—after all, there really aren’t many people to talk to here.
“Wish he’d been around when I was there. Could’ve saved us some trouble.” She makes her way up to the outcrop, her hatred still burning, though tempered slightly with the knowledge that this isn’t actually him, that the Warden is simply a manifestation. He must notice her narrowed gaze, or the ghost of a snarl on her lips, because the ceramic-skinned man snaps harshly.
“Do not eye me so venomously. I do not know you.” His words only serve to deepen the scowl on the Drifter’s face. She hisses a reply, hardly thinking about anything else other than the fact that she knows him, or the person he was based off of.
“No, you don’t. But I know you, Warden.” The low growl causes his metallic face to crease, a movement similar to an eyebrow raise creasing what would be his brow bone if he wasn’t made of ceramic. Lēna says nothing more, smirking at his confused, irritated silence as she makes her way down to the arena. She still can’t block out his taunts as she spars with Kullervo—she finds that she certainly has a new respect for the prisoner now—, but they don’t affect her fighting skills as much as they had previously. As she shoots at the prisoner, she ‘accidentally’ aims upwards, where she knows the Warden is seated. She knows the bullet won’t hit him, but she also knows that this is what he deserves. Yes, he might not be the real Ballas, but he’s based off of him. That’s enough for her. Ballas tortured Lotus, attempted to kill—succeeded, really—both her and Mag, and was responsible for hurting so many others. If she had to listen to his horrible voice every time she ventures to this island, Lēna figures she may as well get something out of it. It’s cathartic in a way, she finds. Not the whole ‘trying—and failing—to hurt him’ thing, because of course not, she isn’t completely insane. But, being able to focus her anger on a manifestation of Ballas, since she can’t do so on the actual Orokin, is…well, she finds she’s unable to actually describe how that feels, but there’s something about it that lessens her stress, lessens her worry that somehow he’ll come back and hurt Lotus and Mag again. She may not be as connected to Lotus as the kid is, but she did nurse her back to health, and gods-damnit, that counts for something. She doesn’t want her to get hurt again, nor does she want that for Mag, who’s become almost like a younger sister to her. So, if she has to stab the Warden in order to convince herself that Ballas will not—cannot—come back, so be it. She never said she was a hero. Hell, she’s hardly even good. That’s fine by her. A caged beast has to bite eventually, doesn’t she?

'He treated his bloody Kaithes better than he treated me, his own executioner!'
Tumblr media
ID: a drawing of Lodun, a character from Warframe. He wears a grey mask with a cross expression and harsh, pointed features. His headdress is lined with gold, maroon with three golden beams, one in the center and the other two mirroring each other on each side. two pieces that look like rolled up hair hang from each pointed side of the headdress, golden ringed. His outfit features more golden adornments (one of which also features the same maroon of his headdress), and is red. His skin, visible by his arms, is blue. The background is red, and features a pattern that was supposed to resemble a curtain. End ID
So yeah, Lodun, am I right. I am very normal about him (I'm lying). I'm also fucking around with shading and stuff, and quite like how this turned out so I'm posting it here. If anyone wants to provide a better image description go ahead, I just wanted to attempt to describe this since it's my own creation.

the best part about adding kaithes to the game is that now i get to give my tenno a horse that just fucking sucks. Tianma is a beautiful noble steed that just hates everyone and her favorite pastimes are property damage, chasing and killing small animals, and Just Fucking Leaving whenever laz turns his back for more than five seconds. one time he tied her reins to a fencepost to go do something and she had pulled the entire fence apart so she could go lie down in a puddle like ten feet away from where he left her. dragging the fencepost the entire time. the only emotions she’s capable of are spite and malice. laz loves her unconditionally and refuses to hear a word against her

Hello again, Tenno! Let's talk Easter Eggs! Specifically, Warframe DE Logo Easter Eggs! I just recently found the DE logo hidden in Duviri (quite by accident as I've done with all but the one hidden in the Zariman), and wanted to share screenshots of my findings!
But then it occurred to me, "gosh wouldn't it be cool and helpful if I compiled images to help people find all of the hidden DE logos?"
AND SO BELOW THE CUT ARE DIRECTIONS AND SCREENSHOTS TO DO JUST THAT!
Just to warn you: this is a long post since it's essentially a step-by-step for finding all the logos in all five areas!
Enjoy!
Welcome to Cetus! You're Landing Craft has just dropped you off onto the platform by the shore! See that cliff face off to your right? If you want to find the DE logo you need to go climb on top of that!
Tumblr media
Yeah, in fact you need to go this far inland (to the rock I'm standing on)!
Tumblr media
It's right here on the edge of this rock!
Tumblr media
Next area!
Welcome to Fortuna (my favorite hub ♥)! Bask in the wonderful bisexual lighting!
Tumblr media
When you are done basking jump on up here to this little balcony! It's the second balcony up (the third floor if you count the ground floor as the first one)!
Tumblr media
The DE logo is hidden on side facing inward!
Tumblr media
And onward we go!
Welcome to the Necralisk! It's a bit pustule-y and gooey but there is still some old Orokin architecture sticking out of the infested flesh-scape here and there! Like this pillar! Here - I'll throw my Xoris for you so you can see what I'm looking at!
Tumblr media
Climb on up and - TADA! There it is! A nice and simple find! That can't really be said about the next one though.
Tumblr media
Oh boy here we are...
The DE logo hidden in the Zariman - the one I struggled the most to find, I thought I had rubbed by face against every wall and structure, but apparently I had missed a spot. This is the only one I needed to look up to find. This is the elevator that leads out to the rest of the Zariman - where we do the Zariman missions.
Tumblr media
I thought I had checked this area thoroughly enough but I think that disconnected wall panel always caused my angle coming out from the elevator to just miss it. See where I'm standing? Notice how it seems a little darker there? I certainly didn't.
Tumblr media
There's an opening to - what would you call this - a maintenance port? Regardless, let's head in past the overgrown vines.
Tumblr media
It leads into an elbow passage and into a little room.
Tumblr media
Looks like another area one or more of the Zariman children used to hide. Of course, no area in the Zariman is complete without the ominous graffiti!
Tumblr media
And right on the side of the box here is the logo! Even though I couldn't find this one without help I really enjoy the concept of them being a bit more hidden.
Tumblr media
Like the last one!
I stumbled across this one by accident when I was in Captura gathering references of the mirror and portal frames for a Duviri-inspired piece I'm working on.
Tumblr media
I happened to notice what looks like a window in the Kaithe's stable and totally expected the overgrowth to be a solid object when I jumped at it.
Tumblr media
It wasn't. Queue shock and confusion. At first, I thought it was just a hole leading over to the plant area - a silly short cut. I walked in a little further.
Tumblr media
No, this is an enclosed cave. A secret! A nice little den to hide in!
Tumblr media
Wait that's-! WOAH I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THEY WOULD HAVE A HIDDEN LOGO FOR THIS AREA! That's so cool and fun! I love this hiding spot for it! The perfect amount of context clues to make you suspicious and intrigued by the area if you are looking! This one was by far my favorite to find!
Tumblr media
Anyways,
That's all of the DE logos (that I'm aware of)! I'm looking forward to the interesting places they will think to hide the next ones! Hope you enjoyed my guide (and the silly retelling of how I found the one in Teshin's Cave)!
Thanks for reading!

Mmmmmm post sleep Tennocon Rambles under the cut
Ofc because I just started vet school last week (yay) I couldn’t attend in person. Really sad I couldn’t attend because I’ve always loved it when I went to the 2017 and 2018 events. Had to watch the stream, but it look like from pictures everyone had tons of fun and I’m glad it was a success. Next year, please let it be closer to the middle of the summer akdjejak
Art panel, the highlight for me as always as an artist myself. Really cool to see all the concept works from way back in Dark Sector. I’m so sad the art book was so expensive and sold out so fast, but I hope this means they can be inspired to do a reprint in the future (maybe when food expenses arent draining my bank like a whirlpool….) The new upcoming concepts I can’t say I’m a fan of all too much. Grendel is my most hated frame but the boar is a cool inpiration for him. I personally think the game is very oversaturated with Liger concepts, so as per most Liger deluxes Sevagoth wasn’t my cup of tea. They designed the frame, why not have someone else take a shot as his deluxe? I didn’t catch who designed Yareli’s bu that one was interesting.
And….. the Heirloom skins collection. They’re pretty. I though Mag’s was for Nova and got too excited for a bit. And as a Frost main I’m always glad for more content containing him, hell I squint at his skin because it has a few elements that are strikingly similar to my Deluxe concept for him back in 2021. But. The price. I want to buy it, but this entire collection pitch is exactly what Digital Extremes has vow to not do in all 10 years with their fair free to play model, and this sets a very bad precedent if it were to continue. $90 USD is too high of a price for a pack of skins marketed as being in celebration of 10 years, inflated artificially with the Regal Aya. A pack of 6 (with an extra bonus, making 7 total and 400 platinum) is $40 which means everything in the second tier pack is only $30. The same price as the low tier. The only new thing the skins intoduce are the Signas, which are cool, but I gesture to Kaithe coronets. The skins have no new visual effects for abilities, no new animations, not even new idles like recent Deluxe skins have. Rebecca used the word “prestigious” for describing the pack. And I beg her to NEVER use that word again for cosmetics. Prestigious content is a very slippery slope. Take the Prestige skins from League. Because of those skins Riot is now thinking they can make a variant recolor of a very old Jhin legendary and mark the price up to $200. Warframe doesn’t need that. Not to mention the FOMO. The Heirloom pack is gone at the end of the year. Even past Prime Access comes back in Resurgence after a few years. Nightwave brings back old items from past story events. The only thing that has never returned was the Founders Packs, for a good reason. The Heirloom collection feels like a rehash of the Founders marketing in the present state of them game where it’s most likely not trying to stay afloat. FOMO has never existed in Warframe, and it shouldn’t be added now.
Don’t even get me started on that 10 year Accolade in the packs. Accolades have usually been for people who made a notable contribution to the game. Founders, Closed Beta testers, Creators. All of them have some sort of impact on the game be it keeping it afloat in the starting year or contributing to the Community. Now a shiny sticker can be added to any account for as low as $30. I’ve been playing the game for 8 years. I’m not a ‘10 year supporter’ yet. The wording itself insinuates that to supoort the game for a decade, you need to pay. That Accolade should have been something added automatically when your account turns 10 years old.
Overall I’m extremely disappointed bu the Heirloom marketing as it stands. Will I buy it down the road? Chances are high when I’m not bleeding for food with school going on, which is at the very end of the year right before it goes away cause I also give into FOMO. DE has adjusted their strategies before, and I hope they do so now. But this has already set a bad first impressions for any future Heirloom content.
Anyway, rant over on that. Sound panel was cool. Always cool to hear how specific sounds are made like Kullervo. The Heirloom debacle kinda soured my mood for a bit, so I focused more on studying my classes and then went shopping with my roommates.
Came back a little late to TennoLive, probably halfways thru the Soulframe demo. From what I saw I really like the whole concept and thematic. The little turtle guy is so cute. Excited to see more of its development and eventually play it.
The Warframe aspect I had more range of feelings. Whispers in the Wall looks really cool and I’m excited for exploring what the fuck Albrecht is doing. I love how its expanding Deimos more, instead of adding another island and button to navigation. It feels like it’ll require the New War to access, since its all based around the aesthetic of the Man in the Wall seen at the very end of the quest. I’m very interest in the human Loid (best design from Liger since Nezha Empyrean imo). I hope he gives more insight into the attitudes of the Orokin since he is 99% likely from before the Old War.
And… Warframe 1999. I got sucked into Warframe because of it’s unique spin on fantasy sci-fi. And throughout the 8 years I’ve played it’s stuck to its aethetic formula to a T. Seeing CRT monitors and Nokias along with Entrati designs, the modern sci-fi elements and callbacks to Dark Sector makes it feel out of place. Blasphemous almost. But, I’ve had this feeling before with Duviri. I had reservations as to whether Duviri would break the Warframe Universe as we knew it. But DE made the Paradox make sense, and the aethetic language of the world fits perfectly into the formula. I absolutely love Duviri. I need to see more and play 1999 in order to feel how it connects to the Origin System and Duviri as a whole, be it the very distant past (and being born in 99 myself makes me…. Haaaaa) or a parallel universe connected by Void Fuckery(tm). But seeing how Duviri played out I have no real doubts DE won’t pull it off again.

Ohh man, I just finished my first SP Orowyrm fight and it was amazing! I adored the wyrmling/kaithe segment- and the Pathos Valves make the mount phase so much more interesting.
It's going to be hard going back to the regular fight now, knowing that there's an even cooler version of one of my favorite bosses.

Tennotober 2024
My collection of works based on the Tennotober 2024 prompts.
Hi all! I wanted to take part in Tennotober 2024, but I also knew that I wouldn’t be able to draw 31 art pieces, so I’m doing some fics instead!
The Warframe Tennotober 2024 Prompt List can be found here: https://forums.warframe.com/topic/1412660-official-tennotober-2024-megathread/
Day 26: 1999: Reflections Of A Year, Both Terrible And Not
So many things have gone wrong recently, especially in the past year. Yet, there’s one thing that, despite the odds, hasn’t.
TW: None for this chapter.
With that out of the way, the fic begins under the cut.
It’s been a real shitty year.
That asshole ‘Doctor’—the one he trusted, the one that did this to them—is nowhere to be found, even as everything seems to get worse around them. Scaldra’s becoming bolder by the day, the Infested are, of course, creeping further and further into the city, and to make things worse, this ‘Drifter’ woman has just…appeared.
Of course.
But, to Arthur’s surprise, the Drifter hasn’t actually caused that many problems. She isn’t stupid, and she has a sarcastic streak that gives Quincy a run for his money. She’s weirdly competitive—he tries not to worry about the fact that that could definitely get her killed—, which makes her a good fit amongst the team. She doesn’t seem to know a lot about the world she’s found herself in—he still hasn’t wrapped his head around whatever the fuck a ‘Kaithe’ is, and he isn’t sure he wants to—, but she hasn’t proven to be a liability thus far.
Arthur leans on the wall, watching as the Drifter—Lēna—smirks, shooting a snarky comment to Quincy as he apparently says something. They’re currently placing bets on…something. He isn’t entirely sure what, but it can’t be smart, because Lettie’s pressing her head against her forehead so hard he’s surprised it doesn’t hurt. Amir’s shifting from foot to foot excitedly, watching Aoi swirl a metal ball through the air. He turns his gaze to the Drifter again, noticing her looking around as well. Something flashes in her eyes, and she addresses the group.
“Let’s move this to the furniture store, yeah? Get Eleanor’s opinion before we do something stupid.” Lettie mutters something like ‘This is gonna be stupid either way’, but they leave the arcade, and he follows suit.
That’s another thing about Lēna, she engages with all of them. It doesn’t seem to matter to her that Eleanor doesn’t go on missions with the rest of them. It doesn’t seem to matter that Quincy’s more of a loner, or that Amir changes topics as quickly as the electricity that darts from his fingers, or that Lettie’s adopted a horde of rats.
Arthur admires that.
Of course, there’s a little voice in his head telling him that it’ll all backfire somehow. Given how this year has gone, he isn’t entirely ready to write off those thoughts yet. But, as he watches their grins as Amir and Aoi cause a small metallic ball to spark as it flies across the room, as he hears a snort from Quincy and a half-amused, half-irritated groan from Lettie, as he spots a small grin on his sister’s face, Arthur pushes the anxieties down, even for a second. As the clock ticks closer to the new year, he sighs quietly.
Yes, this year’s been absolute shit. Next year probably will be too.
But maybe, eventually, there’ll be a year that won’t be. Maybe he can let himself hope.
If all else fails, they’ll be together, at least.

Devstream 170 Notes
This was a great stream, fun and full of antics, I recommend watching it for yourself. Regardless, here are my highlights :) Duviri spoilers will be under the cut.
Rebb's outfit… I say this every time, but god DAMN, fashion QUEEN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DUVIRI:
I'm glad the team is happy with it!! I loved the quest, and they should be proud of it :)
The devs waiting until they see the stats to make a call on the duviri paradox as a new player start is the right choice.
Is it just me, or is there some lack of alignment between Pablo and Rebb as far as game direction that wasn't there before? It could just be Rebb's mania from sleep deprivation. EDIT: expanded on later, as Pablo stabbed Rebb in the back by not responding to her slacks liking Leon Kennedy
As usual with my boy Pablo, everything he has said about decrees is on point. I'm glad he has acknowledged the progression curve on drifter with decrees is a bit nuts but still respecting how fun the power fantasy is. He's very aware of the delicate balance, and he is a good steward. I didn't know we'll likely be getting more decrees in the future, and I look forward to seeing them!!
So many of the fuckos on r/Warframe have been saying DE doesn't play or test on Steel Path, so Rebb talking about how she and Pablo did a run on Steel Path and how they recommend approaching it was VALIDATING
Dax-inspired Warframe??? 👀👀👀
Defense objectives in the Undercroft might be revisited later.
Rebb originally wanted 10 emotions. Oh my god I want to know what they were
Discussing Calm as a potential free roam mode… I would love this for me personally, because I love exploring and resource gathering.
Confirmation that sol/terra/luna is voiced by a guinea pig, the cutest that Chris on the sound team could find.
Kullervo: new Warframe
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
fuckinf. DAGGERS. a pincushion boy. He's so pretty and shiny He's got a voidy syandana:
Tumblr media
my clanmate contributes "Kullorbo from my Warframes"
Gardening: We are now on Gardening Plan v 4, smaller than previous ambitions. Rebb regrets getting community expectations so high, and they simply have to acknowledge the limitations of the team size. No Dormiview Valley for us.
Gauss Deluxe: "Space Hermes meets Mecha"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His head goes UP
Tumblr media
Acceltra concept, which… doesn't look like the acceltra at all lol
Tumblr media
Gauss Deluxe Kaithe skin looks sick as all hell:
Tumblr media
Tennocon 2023: Buy a digital pack to tennocon to receive… X-shaped (for Tenth Anniversary) Syandana, which I think is terrible and will clip into everything
Tumblr media
Gorgeous rapier skin
Tumblr media
A smattering of other customizations showed too quickly for me to take notes on.
Q&A I had to type all this v fast so it's paraphrased Q: More bosses? Pablo: We have plans for one more miniboss Q:Does it make a difference which name you choose for Sol/terra/luna? Rebb: it's a flavour choice Q: Crafting or housing in Duviri? Pablo: We looked at making the dormizone a third base (after orbiter/drifters camp). It's complicated. We are going to look at stats for drifters camp first. Kary: We would need a very good reason to rebuild all those machines
Rebb is very happy that Duviri is out, and will be even happier when the bugs are fixed, which the team is fully committed to doing. And then there was a round of shoutouts to the great voice actors in this update. And a joke about Rebb getting food poisoning while recording a steel path test run. Watch out for raw eggs.
