München on Pretzels & Spätzle

Did we go back to Munich for Oktoberfest? Yes, yes we did.  Do I have regrets? Only a few, eg that hat ^^

Haha, seriously though, our friends Robby and Emily (Emily and I used to work at KPMG together until she moved back home to Houston) came over for a Eurotrip, and we kicked it off with trip to Munich.  We arrived Monday afternoon, and checked into our AirBnB with our host, Phil, who may or may not have been very high when he checked us in.  Gotta be in the right mood, right?  Well, we went out for a traditional Bavarian dinner (first of many), and went to see the sights. Namely the Michael Jackson memorial…which is plastered on the statue of a Renaissance composer…outside of a hotel where he used to stay…since his death eight years ago…because Munich loves Michael…not making this up.  So after digesting that tidbit, we went to the city center and had beers at two different beer halls.  I eventually came away with a little souvenir from the main Hofbrauhaus.

The next day we dressed up in our lederhosen and dirndls, and walked to the Oktoberfest fair grounds. (Oh, I found Spiderman along the way, right where we saw him last time!) Well we had breakfast (beer), brunch (beer), lunch (oxtail sandwich and beer), mid-afternoon snack (beer and cheesy bread), dinner (beer), supper (beer) and fourth-meal (doner kebab- I couldn’t handle anymore beer).  Overall I had less beer than I did last year (7 to last year’s 10-12, depending when you ask me), but I was sloshed. Mariah made sure to show me the video evidence the next morning, but it was a ton of fun. We met people from Israel, Chicago, locals from down the street, and people from good ole CO (I don’t remember them, but I’m told they’re real). We rode a bad-ass roller coaster and I bought a new hat (see drunken regrets). It was a great time.

Despite going to Oktoberfest, we specifically built in time to see other sites in Munich and surrounding Bavaria this time around.  The next day, we took a train to Fussen, the town nearby Neuschwanstein Castle (the castle that inspired the Disney Castle).  The train ride was long, but we passed the time looking at the gorgeous countryside.  We had a light lunch in town (more doner- I got Robby hooked!), and went up the hill to Neuschwanstein. Well, I mixed up our tour group times, so we had another hour to kill- time to drink a beer! The tour was pretty interesting, albeit short. I had no idea the castle (and the kingdom of Bavaria) was so recent. The kingdom was only established in an alliance with Napoleon. So the castle (unfinished, btw) was built based on the childhood dream of Ludwig II, who was a crazy person who thought he was the moon king, in the 1860s. The castle is beautiful, but the best part of the tour was the guy throwing out random dad jokes along the way. Upon seeing the royal telephone (think Alexander Graham Bell), “Is that text capable?”  Or upon seeing the room built to look like a literal cave, “So this was the first man cave?”

We did have a little time to see the grounds, including a bridge that looked down on the castle, for even more gorgeous views. We also looked at the other castle nearby, which I mistook for a cheesy hotel… whoops.  I guess that DoubleTree on I-25 kinda nails it.  We had a longer journey on the way home due to missing a train, but we made up for it with beer!  And eventually spätzle.

For our last day in Munich, we took a tour.  Mike’s Bikes was recommended by a friend and it lived up to reputation. Our guide, Kyle, was really informative and, just as important, funny. We saw some sights, rubbed some nobs, ate (and drank) at a biergarten, and rolled through the (GIANT) city park to see some surfers! After wrapping up, we stopped by the KPMG building to see some local art- the endless staircase- pretty neat concept.  Emily and Robby had to skip town (they went on some other Euro-ventures).  We caught some falafel (yum!) and made our way out as well.

Ok, jump ahead a week, and we had a few more visitors as we settled back in ‘normal’ Amsterdam expat life.  First, Mariah’s Aunt Karen and Uncle Jim stopped by Amsterdam en route to Croatia and Venice.  We were able to meet them for dinner (our first Indonesian experience!).  Dinner was delicious and the company was delightful. We loved chatting about travel experiences. 

Then Emily and Robby came back for a few days - Emily had some new hardware after their solo adventures! Congratulations y’all (did I use y’all right?). So we spent the next couple of days showing them some of our favorite spots around Amsterdam. I think they really liked our burger spot.  But we also drank more beer (of course- but this time we got a shirt for being awesome at it), had some Genever (and traded quips with our bartender), and watched polo (Johnny Good = GOAT).  Oh, I found Spiderman hanging in A’dam too.
