The thing with published authors being like, “I don’t want fanfiction writers to die specifically, but just know that you will never write your best stuff in other people’s universes” is that it disallows the idea that writing can just be for writing’s sake, for therapy, for the entertainment of friends, and not to be published or profited from.

Are some fanfic writers practicing their trade on beloved characters whilst also sending their original fiction out to publishers? Sure. But some authors don’t seem to understand that not everyone Writes To Live; most of us don’t even want to. (I’d immediately start to hate writing if I was getting paid for it, in fact.) For many of us it’s enough to Live To Write, so no, Mr Seventeenth Book In The Hit Series Out Now, I don’t care about your condescending opinion. “You’ll never get to where I am now!” Good.
