The name of the @manleylabs #massivepassive at the top of the frame contains a clue to its operation . A “passive EQ” in this context generally refers to a circuit whose tone-shaping components consist only of passive components like inductors, capacitors and resistors. These circuits require no external power . They’re usually employed in conjunction with a make-up amplifier at the end. The passive EQ’s neutral position attenuates by a fixed amount, and any tone shaping causes either more attenuation or less attenuation. When combined with the amplifier stage, this manifests as “boost” or “cut” at the output . An active #EQ (like the #GML8200 that sits below) works in a different way—the tone shaping occurs within the amplifier stages themselves . We haven’t investigated the topology of this specific unit, but often this is accomplished by manipulating what’s called “feedback control” of amplifiers within the circuit . Amplifiers often have a built-in error correction mechanism that measures what’s going on at the output and “feeds this information back” to an earlier stage, allowing it to influence what’s going on earlier in the circuit . This is used in all sorts of devices (even beyond electronics). The thermostat in your home is a feedback control device (as ambient temperature warms, the AC kicks on) . Modern amplifiers use negative feedback in a conceptually-similar way to reduce distortion and frequency response errors. But by tweaking what’s happening in this feedback loop, we can change the behavior of the amplifier (and this is the principle of an active EQ) .
