A few months after 9/11 and mere days after the US invaded Iraq, I performed in a concert with GMCLA - Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles called "Red, White & Blues", which explored the origins of American pop music, as hymns & spirituals evolved into gospel, jazz, & broadway, shaping our nation's history through music.
The unexpected power and poignancy of the songs as related to the terrible time in history we were singing them hit me like a ton of bricks, and the concerts themselves became very cathartic and emotional.
There wasn't a time when we sang Paul Simon's "American Tune" where I wasn't flooded with tears onstage while singing these lyrics. The dark, delicate complexities of hope and heartbreak about where we were, where we are, what’s changed, and where we’re headed, never fail to move me deeply, more now than ever: “We come in the age's most uncertain hour and sing an American tune.”
Paul Simon’s iconic performance above, choral GMCLA version here: https://youtu.be/HdUhLZMqMDA
Posted in remembrance of the day, but not of the dogma.
“Many's the time I've been mistaken And many times confused Yes, and often felt forsaken And certainly misused But I'm all right, I'm all right I'm just weary to my bones Still, you don't expect to be Bright and bon vivant So far away from home, so far away from home
And I don't know a soul who's not been battered I don't have a friend who feels at ease I don't know a dream that's not been shattered or driven to its knees But it's all right, it's all right We've lived so well so long Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on I wonder what went wrong I can't help it, I wonder what went wrong
And I dreamed I was dying And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly And looking back down at me Smiled reassuringly And I dreamed I was flying And high up above my eyes could clearly see The Statue of Liberty Sailing away to sea And I dreamed I was flying
We come on the ship they call the Mayflower We come on the ship that sailed the moon We come in the age's most uncertain hour and sing an American tune But it's all right, it's all right You can't be forever blessed Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day And I'm trying to get some rest That's all I'm trying to get some rest”

Pride marches was once just a thought not to long ago. We Shall Overcome - In Moscow, with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles
This song was performed live on Russian TV in Moscow in 1999 with Russian singer Alla Pugachova. It was one of the largest gatherings of LGBT people in Russian history. The GMCLA released the video again January 2014 to commemorate the struggle for gay rights in Russia.
Edit 09-22-2024 After years of this being available to view on here this has become age restricted. Within the video are scenes of what LGBT+ have had to deal with within Russia (and around the world) of being physically attacked just for being.

I love seeing @stevetrzaska pop up on my tv screen all the time but there’s no greater joy than watching him in his element on stage again, & finally able to cheer him on in his #GMCLA show, esp after he’s traveled up to #OSF every year to do the same for me. And when your bestie is in EVERY dance number, you zealously record & snap photos like a proud show mom 💖 (at Alex Theatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrerH4TBuVL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vm1tr5drqc6t
