Legally Blind: A Year After

One Year ago on Feb. 20, GMA Network Launched its afternoon soap to face ABS-CBN's The Better Half called "Legally Blind".

Replacing "Hahamakin ang Lahat", The series will mark the return of Janine Gutierrez to the small screen, several months after starring in the ill-fated primetime series ‘Once Again’ with Aljur Abrenica. The series also marked Janine's third afternoon show after "Together Forever" and "Villa Quintana" and second Afternoon Prime Show after "Villa Quintana".

During its 93-episode run, it had to face stiff competition against ABS-CBN’s ‘The Better Half’, an equally dramatic series starring Shaina Magdayao, Carlo Aquino, JC de Vera and Denise Laurel. While the former earned some victories against the latter. According to Kantar, "The Better Half" scored 15%, 2-3% better than "Legally Blind" but on the Nielsen, Legally Blind scored better than "The Better Half".

On April 24, 2017, ABS-CBN premiered another kabitserye in ‘Pusong Ligaw’, which stars Beauty Gonzalez, Bianca King, Joem Bascon and Raymond Bagatsing. But instead of replacing ‘The Greatest Love’ in its vacated timeslot, the network decided to place ‘Pusong Ligaw’ opposite ‘Legally Blind’.

As it turned out, ‘Pusong Ligaw’ became even more dominant than ‘The Better Half’ was in its original timeslot. A new opponent spelled doom for ‘Legally Blind’, as ‘Pusong Ligaw”s 18% average ratings were 4-5% better than the former based on Kantar. However on the Nielsen Side, Legally Blind scored better than "Pusong Ligaw".

The show bid adieu on June 30, 2017 (The year after President Rodrigo Duterte took office on that day) with 93 Episodes on its belt. Impostora led by Kris Bernal, Premiered on July 3, 2017 taking Legally Blind's Timeslot.

The notable catchphrase of Grace Evangelista (Gutierrez's character) is "Stop Staring At Me" when Edward (Mikael Daez) looks at her.

Aftermath

Janine Gutierrez continued hosting Day Off with "My Special Tatay" star Ken Chan. She would star in two more Telebabad shows "Sherlock Jr." and "Victor Magtanggol". Prior to Victor Magtanggol, Gutierrez would reunite with Rodjun Cruz to appear in Dear Uge on May 2018.

Mikael Daez (who played Edward Villareal) Would cast with his real life girlfriend Megan Young in "The Stepdaughters" which aired on the same timeslot as his previous series Legally Blind.

Lauren Young (who played Charie Evangelista) Would later cast with Chanda Romero (who played Marissa Evangelista) in Contessa from March-September 2018. Romero would move to "Cain at Abel" later in November 2018.

Rodjun Cruz (who played Joel Apostol) would star in "Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka". He would reunite with Janine Gutierrez to appear in Dear Uge on May 2018.

Marc Abaya (who played Willam Villareal) would star two more shows "Sherlock Jr." and "My Guitar Princess" before resuming as a lead vocalist of Kjwan.

Director Ricky Davao, (who played Manuel Evangelista on the first few episodes) would star in "My Korean Jagiya" and "Inday Will Always Love You"

On June 17, 2018, The cast of Legally Blind reunite in a restaurant in an unknown location. with Rodjun's brother Rayver Cruz (who signed contract with GMA after leaving ABS-CBN).

International Broadcasts On March 23, 2018 Oromar Television in Ecuador aired Legally Blind as "Legalmente Ciega" but it is dubbed in Spanish. The title card is different from the GMA Version.

If it was aired in the United States, It may air on either four networks: ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox. But the show will be dubbed by American Actors in English instead of Tagalog and its title card will adopt the GMA Version. The title will still be "Legally Blind".  If the series airs on ABC, it will air on Sundays 8/7C

If the series airs on CBS, it will air on Thursdays after the CBS Evening News

If the series airs on Fox, it will air on Saturdays 8-9PM ET/PT

If the series airs on NBC, it will air on Seven Days a Week after NBC Nightly News

If it was aired in the United Kingdom, It will air on ITV2. Like the counterpart in the US, The show will be dubbed by British Actors in English and its title card will adopt the GMA Version. The title will still be "Legally Blind". If the series airs on ITV2 , it will air on Saturdays 1:25 replacing American Dad!

If it was aired in Australia, It will be aired on Seven Network. Like the counterpart in the US and the UK, The show will be dubbed by Australian Actors in English and its title card will adopt the GMA Version. The title will still be "Legally Blind". It will air on Mondays to Thursdays 6:30 PM

Remembering Legally Blind

Three Years ago, Legally Blind made it's debut on GMA Afternoon Prime which will face ABS-CBN’s The Better Half. Replacing “Hahamakin ang Lahat”, The series marked the return of Janine Gutierrez (from Villa Quintana 2014, Dangwa, Once Again) to the small screen, several months after starring in the ill-fated primetime series ‘Once Again’ with Aljur Abrenica. She is currently seen via Prima Donnas which aired on the same timeslot as Legally Blind. Marc Abaya would later appear more shows Impostora 2017, Sherlock Jr., My Guitar Princess, Cain at Abel and FPJ's Ang Probinsyano before resuming as a lead vocalist of Kjwan. Lucho Ayala would reunite with Janine Gutierrez via Victor Magtanggol, Marc Abaya via Cain at Abel. He is currently seen via Descendants of the Sun (The Philippine Adaptation). Therese Malvar would later return to Afternoon Prime via Inagaw na Bituin which aired on the same timeslot as Legally Blind in 2019. She last appeared via Beautiful Justice. Ashley Rivera would later appear in later drama shows beginning with Super Ma'am with Marian Rivera & Helen Gamboa (wife of Comedian, Eat Bulaga host and Senate President Tito Sotto), then My Special Tatay and last seen on The Better Woman with Andrea Torres & Derek Ramsay. She is still seen via Bubble Gang. Director Ricky Davao, (who appeared during the first few episodes) would later star in “My Korean Jagiya” and “Inday Will Always Love You” before going back to directing via Dahil Sa Pag-Ibig which would later surpass Legally Blind by seven more episodes totaling to 100 episodes. He will appear via Bilangin Ang Bituin Sa Langit with Kyline Alcantara.

GMA's Shows On A High

When GMA Network replaced underperforming shows with better ones, It scored higher ratings compared to ABS-CBN's but FPJ's Ang Probinsyano continued dominance. The following top-rated shows on GMA were: Magkaagaw, Primadonnas, Madrasta and One of the Baes.

1.) Magkaagaw

Magkaagaw is the first of the top-rated shows that has a combination of top-rated classics of Ika-6 Na Utos, Contessa and Ika-5 Utos. It served as a return for Sunshine Dizon, Patricia Tumulak, Jeric Gonzales and Klea Pineda on the 2:30 Timeslot since Ika-6 Na Utos, Contessa and Ika-5 Utos, respectively.

According to AGB Nielsen, Magkaagaw registered higher rating compared to Vice Ganda-led It's Showtime of 6.9 vs. 5.8 on Dec. 2, 8.2 vs. 5.9 on Dec. 3, 6.9 vs. 5.8 on Dec. 4, 6.2 vs. 5.0 on Dec. 5, 6.5 vs. 4.7 on Dec. 6 and 5.8 vs. 5.1 on Dec. 7

2.) Prima Donnas

Launched on Quezon City day August 19th, Kadenang Ginto remained the top-rated afternoon show until Prima Donnas picked up steam since October 22 with 8.2 compared to it's counterpart of 7.7. This show is a combination of Legally Blind and The Stepdaughters which served as the return of Chanda Romero and Katrina Halili to the 3:25 Timeslot, respectively.

This is Gina Alajar's latest successful show since Onanay as well as her return to direct an Afternoon Prime show since Pinulot Ka Lang Sa Lupa in 2017.

3.) Madrasta

November 29 is when Madrasta began picking up steam and started winning the ratings over Sandugo of ABS-CBN. The show reigstered 5.5 vs Sandugo's 5.2. Just like Haplos and Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko, Thea Tolentino got another success on the afternoons.

4.) One of The Baes

Unlike the underperforming The Better Woman, The tandem of Ken Chan & Rita Daniela found success in afternoon hit series My Special Tatay. This time, they will team up again in this upcoming series. For the past few months, GMA has been hyping the tandem, not to mention the newest jingle for Barangay LS.

One Of The Baes promotes the lives of the sea boys. The series involves the lives of Jowalyn Biglangdapa (Rita) and Grant Altamirano (Ken). Jowa is a goal-oriented girl who will do everything to achieve her dreams of being a ship captain. Grant is a vlogger & environmentalist who is looking for love. Although Jowa has no time for love, their paths will cross one day. It remains to be seen if Jowa is the one Grant is looking for.

Joining the powerhouse cast of One Of The Baes are Melanie Marquez (from Whattamen, Sherlock, Jr.), Joyce Ching (from Anna Karenina 2013, Hahamakin ang Lahat, The Stepdaughters, Dragon Lady), Edgar Allan Guzman (from Dragon Lady), Buboy Villar (from Encantadia 2016, Inday Will Always Love You, TODA One I Love), Kenneth Medrano (from Trops Buena Familia), Rodjun Cruz (from My Husband's Lover, Legally Blind), Archie Alemania (from Inday Will Always Love You, TODA One I Love), Maureen Larrazabal (from Anna Karenina 2013), Tonton Gutierrez (from Ika-5 Utos), Amy Austria (from Halik), Roderick Paulate (from Magandang Tanghali Bayan and M.R.S), Jestoni Alarcon (from The Blood Sisters, My Special Tatay), James Teng (from Love You Two) & Jelai Andres. The series, which is under the News & Public Affairs division, is directed by King Mark Baco & Michael Christian Cardoz.

A Day after the show's debut, It began picking up steam with the show dominating over ABS-CBN's The Killer Bride which it continues today.

The Show serves as: 1.) a reunion of Joyce Ching and Maureen Larrazabal who starred in Anna Karenina in 2013. 2.) a reunion of former Dragon Lady stars of Joyce Ching and Edgar Allan Guzman 3.) Buboy Villar and Archie Alemania who last starred in TODA One I Love 4.) Roderick Paulate's return to full time acting since he lost as Quezon City Vice Mayor to Gian Sotto (the son of Eat Bulaga host and Senate President Tito Sotto)

GMA Telebabad's September Revamp

Following the revamp of the Afternoon Prime beginning with Dahil Sa Pag-Ibig and Primadonnas on May & August 2019 respectively, GMA Network is ready to have another attempt to dethrone ABS-CBN's Ang Probinsyano & The General’s Daughter, Telebabad is going to have a makeover with three shows: Beautiful Justice, The Gift and One of the Baes.

1.) Beautiful Justice

First on the lineup is Beautiful Justice starring Yasmien Kurdi (from Hiram na Anak, Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka, Sa Piling ni Nanay), Bea Binene (from Dragon Lady, Kapag Nahati ang Puso, Mulawin vs Ravena) and Gabbi Garcia (from Sherlock Jr., Pamilya Roces). This is Gabbi’s replacement to the cancelled Rosang Agimat following Eddie Garcia's death last June. This marks Yasmien’s 1st primetime series after 5 years since Rhodora X. They will be joined by Derrick Monasterio (from Inday Will Always Love You), Gil Cuerva (from Sahaya, My Guitar Princess, Super Ma'am, My Love from The Star) and Victor Neri (from TODA One I Love, Inday Will Always Love You, Super Ma'am), with Gabby Eigenmann (from Contessa, Inagaw na Bituin) on a special participation role. Knowing that Victor is a known action star back in the day, he helps train the cast members to make sure that every scene is accurate and mirrors real-life situations. Beautiful Justice involves the lives of Brie Cuevas (Gabbi), the heiress of a tech company, Kitkat Bernardo (Bea), a beautician, and Alice Vida (Yasmien), an NGO volunteer. Their lives will change when Ronnie (Gabby), Alice’s husband, Kitkat’s brother, and Lance (Derrick), Brie’s boyfriend, all who are PDEA agents, died on a failed mission. It will be discovered that Black Pentagon, a powerful drug syndicate, is behind killing their loved ones. With the help of Vin (Gil), another PDEA agent, the three women will unite and bring their special skills with them to track down Black Pentagon and seek justice for what they lost. Joining the powerhouse cast of Beautiful Justice are Bing Loyzaga (from Kapag Nahati ang Puso), Valeen Montenegro (from My Special Tatay, Sherlock Jr., My Korean Jagiya), Kevin Santos (from Daddy's Gurl, Kambal Karibal), Carlos Agassi (from Victor Magtanggol), Angela Alarcon, Erin Ocampo, Will Devaughn (from My Love from the Star) and Vincent Magbanua (from The Cure). The series is directed by Mark Reyes who previously directed The Cure and Cain at Abel on primetime and his directoral chore since Inagaw na Bituin. With Beautiful Justice becoming Ang Probinsyano‘s 14th challenger, it remains to be seen if the girl power in Yasmien, Bea & Gabbi can get even with Coco Martin. 2.) The Gift

Christmas is a few months away. With the Ber season on a roll, GMA will bring in an inspiring story to primetime with The Gift. This upcoming primetime series stars Alden Richards (from Victor Magtanggol, Destined to be Yours), along with Jo Berry (from Onanay), Jean Garcia (from Ika-5 Utos) & Elizabeth Oropesa (from Pamilya Roces, Contessa, Impostora 2017), with TJ Trinidad (from Ngayon At Kailanman) on a special participation role. Alden will portray as a blind person in the series’ later episodes. The Gift tells the story of Joseph (Alden) who was separated from his real life mother Nadia (Jean) after his father Gener (TJ) died when he was young. He grows up living a simple life in Divisoria with his adoptive mother, Strawberry (Jo) who sells fruits for a living, and adoptive grandmother, Lola Char (Elizabeth) who is a self-proclaimed fortune teller in Quiapo. Sep continues to find the silver lining amidst the harsh realities of life. One day, Sep’s life will change when he gets in a near-death experience, resulting to his loss of vision. On the bright side, Sep has been given the ability to see things beyond the naked eye. Joining the stellar cast of The Gift are Mikee Quintos (from Onanay), Ysabel Ortega (from Pusong Ligaw, On the Wings of Love), Martin del Rosario (from My Special Tatay), Mikoy Morales (from D'Originals, Sirkus, My Special Tatay), Rochelle Pangilinan (from Alyas Robin Hood, Onanay), Betong Sumaya (from Haplos, Inday Will Always Love You), Divine Tetay, Christian Vasquez (from Asintado, Ngayon At Kailanman), Thia Thomalla, Victor Anastacio & Luz Valdez (from Destined to Be Yours, The One That Got Away, The General's Daughter). The series is directed by L.A. Madridejos who previously directed My Special Tatay. This serves as a reunion of Jo Berry, Mikee Quintos and Rochelle Pangilinan who were part of their previous Telebabad series Onanay. However, it's Third show One of the Baes to be led by Ken Chan and Rita Daniela who came from My Special Tatay will air on September 30.
