Mama, indeed, got wonderful planner recs from Aunt Gloria during her dinner back in January. She was also told that I just had to name the date and Aunt Glo would arrange a private viewing for me and my girls when the time came to find my gown.

Given how much business picked up after Melanie Pierson’s wedding photos went public, this was no small promise!

As for the planner, Aunt Glo gave us a few names but was really pulling for a young lady she had only interacted with a handful of times at trunk shows & conventions. However, Ms. Courtney Gibson, had clearly left quite an impression.

She was an underdog in the truest sense of the word; young and new to the profession, but Aunt Glo had such faith in her we had to at least give an interview.

I was hesitant at first, but after looking her up and eventually speaking with her, Obie and I understood Aunt Glo’s admiration. She was bright, full of ideas and very, very hungry.

Looking through her portfolio, it was clear she could do a lot with a little; so, with simoleans like that of my parents, the world would her oyster. She was able to sell us a vision based on our brief conversations, replete with rough estimates and detailed timelines, unlike the others. It was obvious that our wedding, our circle, would open doors she’d been trying to access her whole young career.

And knowing that this was her one in a million shot to meet her dream clientele, Courtney was absolutely determined to make our special day a crowning achievement! Her excitement and confidence sparked our own; and just like that, in just one meeting, we were off to the races!

The Clarks

The Cobblepots lobbied hard for the Clark family to be invited, seeing great potential in the son's paintings and believing his work would hold substantial value. Savvy as always, they were correct, with young Barclay's work going on to international renown, touring the finest galleries in Europe and Asia. His influential works hang in every museum, art gallery, and fine establishment in Gotham City. Even where the Court is not present, their influence hangs over the citizens of Gotham.

The Moodys

The Moody family made their fortune in the oil trade. Over the generations, they have used their vast fortune to support Gotham City's artistic community. The Monarch Theater is the epicenter of Gotham City's arts scene, making its proprietor a natural fit for the Court. Having influence over the arts in Gotham is paramount to shaping the culture of the city, and the Court's substantial backing has helped raise the Monarch's profile considerably, attracting some of the world's most sought-after talents and helping solidify Gotham City as a tourism destination. Pierson Moody loved the city to his bones and was pleased to do his part to see her prosper but paid little attention to the inner workings of the Court. I once looked down on this ignorance, but have grown of late to envy it.

The Nests

The Court is everywhere. They overlook every corner of the city from their Nests. They could be in any of them at any time. This protects them from the dangers of predictability. Built within the bones of Gotham's tallest buildings, they are nearly impossible to access by the uninitiated.

Every Nest houses Talons, ready to strike at a moment's notice. Until such an order is given, they are ever perched above us and around us. Waiting.

RIOT FEST, Day 3 Sunday September 15

My wife did not attend this day, but I still opted for driving as I couldn’t face taking the L after the ease of driving and parking the first two days. Weather was very similar to Friday. Some rain in the morning created a few muddy/wet areas, but the fields were mostly in good shape. A little humid with a cooling breeze and just a very light sprinkle for a few minutes later in the day.

·         Ultra Q (Rise stage) – The first band of the day. I didn’t have anyone in particular I wanted to see at this time, but Ultra Q was the choice simply because they were on the stage of the next band I wanted to see. They were a rockin’ Pop Punk band and a good opener for Day 3.

·         Save Ferris (Rise stage) - I have to admit this is one of the bands I most wanted to see this year. I love Ska Punk, I’m easily hooked on good Pop sounds and I’m a sucker for any band with a good front woman. Their 1997 debut It Means Everything is an album I cannot seem to get enough of. After their sophomore release Modified in 1997, they struggled through numerous personnel changes, breakups, lawsuits and eventually a revival where Monique Powell was able to obtain the rights to the band’s name. Deservedly so because she is the face of the band. And she was soooo entertaining. Her singing, humor and banter was outstanding. She held the crowd in sway in a manner that is comparable to Gwen Stefani. She started the show in a tight black dress and stripped off pieces of clothing until she was eventually down to a Vaudeville-type leotard. She strutted around the stage while teasing the crowd with sexual innuendos. Even the band members continuously laughed and smiled while watching her stage antics. The band covered the Dead Kennedys song Too Drunk To Fuck and of course, they finished the set with their great cover of Come On Eileen. Based on the energy Monique puts into singing on her records, I had high hopes for the show and she and Save Ferris did not disappoint.

·         White Reaper (Roots Stage) – This Louisville band that was not on my radar. However, as I was walking through the park that morning, a lady I was chatting with suggested I see White Reaper because her cousin is in the band. They were very good playing a brand of Hard Rock/Garage Punk. I stayed for about half their set before moving on to catch some of another band.

·         Frank Iero and The Future Violents (Rise Stage) – I caught the second half of this show. Frank Iero was one of the guitar players in My Chemical Romance. I was not familiar with this band but they had a nice Alternative sound and were very energetic on stage.

·         Less Than Jake – Well, I had to have more Ska Punk! I remember my older son David being into  this band when he was a young teenager. Although I’ve listened to this musical genre since the Ska Revival in the late 70’s, it was really David’s interest in bands like Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, The Aquabats and Less Than Jake that got me to start listening to it on somewhat of a regular basis. Less Than Jake was awesome. I stood close to the stage and enjoyed their sound, energy and great humor. They put so much into their show and had a lot of fun with the audience. It was easy to tell by their laughter, smiles and jokes that they really enjoy what they are doing. This is a band I would definitely like to see again.

·         Sincere Engineer (Rebel stage) – This band is led by Chicagoan Deanna Belos. Their debut album was just two years ago. Very good hard driving Garage Punk. This was the only band I saw with my younger son Dylan, who had just arrived and then departed after the set to catch up with friends.

·         Streetlight Manifesto (Rise stage) – And more Ska! I did not see the first half of their set but Dylan and I could hear them while we sitting on the soccer field and eating some dinner. After Dylan left, I went to see the rest of their set. Like Less Than Jake, they were a fun, energetic Ska band.

·         B-52’s (Radicals stage) – For my taste, this was the beginning of a killer ending for Riot Fest with an incomparable Final Four musical artists. While I can’t say that I am a huge B-52’s fan, I did get into them from hanging out with my buddy Dean in the 1980’s. Their album Comic Thing, released in June 1989, was a summer classic that year. I still enjoy listening to it from beginning to end. They played their two big hits from that album, Love Shack and my favorite, Roam in addition to other hits such as Give Me Back My Man and Rock Lobster. What amazed me was that Kate Pierson (71) and Cindy Wilson (62) still sounded youthful and superb. Fred Schneider’s quirky voice still sounds the same too with his singing and talking voices being virtually indistinguishable. They also drew the largest crowd I had ever seen at the Radicals stage. There sound was rounded out with original member Keith Strickland on guitar and a host of touring musicians. While all still the original members, the death the Ricky Wilson in 1985 almost ended the band, but they forged ahead as a quartet and continuing to be a very entertaining band. After Riot Fest, I did read an article that suggested this was a farewell tour for the band. I haven’t seen or heard that anywhere else. Given their ages and longevity, I guess it would not be surprising, but I hope they stick around awhile longer.

·         Patti Smith and Her Band (Riot stage) – The second of the Final Four was the great Patti Smith. This was my second time seeing her as she was also at Riot Fest in 2014. One of the founders of Punk (before it was called Punk), she was way ahead of her time in terms of her music, attitude and feminism. While she has produced some great songs, I was surprised, though not disappointed, that she did several cover versions during her set including I’m Free (Rolling Stones), Beds Are Burning (Midnight Oil), Are You Experienced? (Jimi Hendrix), Walk On The Wild Side (Lou Reed) and After The Goldrush (Neil Young). I particularly liked I’m Free and Beds Are Burning. She closed the set with Gloria, which is technically a cover song (Them). However, that was the opening track of her first album and she did such a unique version of the song that she has made it her own. Add in People Have The Power and Because The Night along with a couple of other originals and it made for a wonderfully enjoyable set.

·         The Raconteurs (Roots stage) – Earlier in the year, when I heard The Raconteurs were touring, I immediately went to their website to see when they would be in Chicago. While they were going to be playing in Midwest states during September, Chicago was noticeably absent from their schedule. That immediately led me to speculate that they would play Riot Fest. While I’m sure I wasn’t the only on to draw that conclusion, I was dead right for a change. (My Riot Fest prediction percentage does not have the best track record.) I just saw Jack White perform last year at Lollapalooza so it was great to see him again a little more than a year later. I would have to say for overall performance, this was, in my book, the best of the festival. The show was just so impactful in terms of being a tight band with great professional talent, tremendous production and a powerhouse of sound. They played six songs off the new album (Help Us Stranger), four from Broken Boy Soldiers and three form Consolers Of The Lonely. I like all three albums so I was happy with everything they played. Jack White also referenced Bikini Kill during the set and the band also played a snippet of Gloria which I interpreted as a nod to Patti Smith.Unlike last year at Lolla, Jack White did not offer much banter between songs, but I believe the bands stage time was much shorter at Riot Fest than it was at Lolla. As with last year at Lolla, I thoroughly enjoyed Jack White’s guitar playing. When you look at the span of his career, the various directions he has gone with his music, and the potential he still has, he is truly a treasure of American Rock music.

·         Bikini Kill (Riot stage) – This band was Riot Mike’s coup for the 2019 edition of Riot Fest. This year was the first time Bikini Kill officially reunited as a band since they broke up in 1997. The reunion included 3 of 4 original members (Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail and Kathi Wilcox). I have twice seen Kathleen Hanna live with her band The Julie Ruin, but I never thought I would see Bikini Kill. It seemed like a bit of a strange transition from The Raconteurs big time Rock sound to Bikini Kill’s stripped-down Riot Grrrl sound. But Riot Fest is first and foremost a Punk Rock festival, so Bikini Kill deserved the top spot. Kathleen Hanna also commented on how difficult it is for a female band to get “this spot” (top headliner and a Rock music festival). Kathleen sang the bulk of the songs with Tobi Vail taking lead vocals for a few numbers. Kathleen talked quite a bit between songs, often addressing societal issues from a feminist point of view but also talking about the history behind some of the songs. Based on my experience seeing The Julie Ruin, I know she likes to chat on stage. However, when you are given a 75 minute time slot and you play Punk songs that are on average maybe two minutes long, I suppose you have to fill up the time with some banter. At any rate, it was fantastic to see this band and an awesome way to end Riot Fest 2019.

On February 4, 2020, The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center was a sea of bright red as Woman’s Day hosted its 17th Annual Red Dress Awards.

Michelle Collins kept the crowd laughing as she hosted alongside Woman’s Day editor in chief Susan Spencer. Sutton Foster kicked-off the evening with a gorgeous medley performance of “Sing” and “Heart and Music,” and The B-52s brought the house down with some of their greatest hits – which had attendees including: Betsey Johnson, Joy Bauer, Star Jones, Gloria Reuben, Dorinda Medley, Jackie Goldschneider, Kate Chastain (Below Deck), Carrie Berk, and Elena Matei on their feet dancing.

The evening honored Mindy Grossman, President and Chief Executive Officer, WW; Dr. Marilyn Gaston & Dr. Gayle Porter, co-founders & co-directors, The Gaston and Porter Health Improvement Center; and Annabelle Volgman M.D., F.A.C.C., senior attending physician at Rush Medical College and Rush University Medical Center, for their efforts to help women take charge of their heart health.

Participants in this year’s Woman’s Day Live Longer and Stronger Challenge, led by Joy Bauer, TODAY show nutritionist and Woman’s Day columnist with Dr. Stacey Rosen and Dr. Jennifer Mieres from Northwell Health/Katz Institute for Women, were also celebrated with a standing ovation for their accomplishments in the program.

U.S. Judge Rebukes Epstein Estate for Keeping Accusers in Dark About Settlement

A U.S. judge on Thursday rebuked Jeffrey Epstein’s estate for keeping the late financier’s alleged victims in the dark about a fund that would compensate them for claims of sexual abuse.

The estate, facing at least 14 lawsuits from women, has proposed creating a fund to resolve the allegations out of court.

Epstein, 66, hanged himself in a Manhattan jail in August while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

Bennet Moskowitz, a lawyer for the estate, told Magistrate Judge Debra Freeman on Thursday that the fund was an “extraordinary opportunity” for the alleged victims, though he could not say how much money would be available.

Roberta Kaplan, one of the attorneys for the women, said she was met with “radio silence” when she had tried to discuss a settlement with the estate. She said it was “incredibly disrespectful” to propose the fund without hearing from the alleged victims.

Freeman agreed the women must have more of a say about any settlement process, adding it could not be “unilateral.”

“For cases to settle, there has to be not just interest on both sides, there have to be seats at the table on both sides,” the judge said. Freeman ordered both sides to confer and report on their progress by Jan. 10.

One of the women’s lawyers, Brad Edwards, said he may file “dozens” more lawsuits against the estate.

The latest lawsuit against the estate was announced later on Thursday. The plaintiff, Teala Davies, said Epstein offered to help her when she was living on her own and supporting herself at age 17, but instead sexually abused her repeatedly at his homes in New York, New Mexico, Florida, the Virgin Islands and France.

“I was a little girl,” Davies said at a press conference with her lawyer, Gloria Allred. “It took me a long time to break free from his mind control and abuse.”

Epstein had pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking charges involving dozens of underage girls.

He previously escaped federal prosecution by pleading guilty in 2008 to Florida state prostitution charges, an agreement now widely considered too lenient.

Epstein’s friends once included U.S. President Donald Trump, former president Bill Clinton and Britain’s Prince Andrew, none of whom has been criminally accused of wrongdoing. The prince stepped down from public duties on Wednesday after an interview he gave about his association with Epstein drew widespread criticism.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Movie producer Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers asked a New York judge on Friday to dismiss rape and sexual assault charges against him, releasing emails between one of his accusers and Weinstein they said were not shown to the grand jury that indicted him.

Weinstein has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone following accusations by more than 70 women, mostly young actresses and other women employed in the movie business, of sexual misconduct, including rape, dating back decades.

In a motion filed in New York state court in Manhattan, Weinstein’s lawyers said the emails showed “a long-term, consensual, intimate relationship” between Weinstein and an unnamed woman who has accused him of raping her in 2013.

Weinstein’s lawyers said they meant “not to ignore that rape can occur in relationships,” but that prosecutors should have shown the grand jurors the emails in order for them to make an “informed decision.”

The woman and Weinstein communicated over a four-year period after the date she said he raped her, Weinstein’s lawyers said.

A lawyer or representative for the woman was not immediately known to request comment on the motion.

A spokesman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, who is prosecuting the case, declined to comment on the motion.

The case against Weinstein in Manhattan involves three women. Weinstein, 66, has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and is free on $1 million bail.

Weinstein lawyer Benjamin Brafman said in a statement that the motions “reveal the existence of exculpatory evidence.”

The accusations against Weinstein led to the #MeToo movement in which hundreds of women publicly accuse powerful men in business, politics and entertainment of sexual harassment and abuse.

Weinstein’s lawyers said charges against Weinstein in New York involving two other women were flawed and must be dismissed as well. One involves a former actress who said Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004. The other is a former production assistant who said he performed oral sex on her against her will in 2006.

Weinstein’s lawyers said the charges relating to the former actress failed to provide enough detail because they did not say exactly when the assault happened, instead giving a three-month range.

Prosecutors failed to give Weinstein adequate advance notice that they were presenting the “far more serious charges” to the grand jury of the allegation from 2006, his lawyers said.

The former production assistant’s lawyer, Gloria Allred, said in response to Weinstein’s motion to dismiss that the grand jury “would not have indicted him if they did not find the testimony that they heard credible.”

A lawyer or representative for the former actress was not immediately known to request comment.

As accusations against Weinstein mounted, his company Weinstein Co fired him and filed for bankruptcy, and he was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Through his company and Miramax, Weinstein won plaudits and awards for movies including “Shakespeare in Love,” “Pulp Fiction” and “The King’s Speech.”

'Apprentice' contestant's lawsuit against Trump to proceed: NY judge

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A former contestant on Donald Trump’s reality TV show “The Apprentice” may pursue her defamation lawsuit against the U.S. president, a New York state judge ruled on Tuesday, despite Trump’s effort to have an appeals court put it on hold.

The contestant, Summer Zervos, has claimed that Trump sexually harassed her and defamed her when he denied her allegations. Trump has argued that as a sitting president he is immune from the lawsuit and is seeking an order from New York’s highest court freezing the case.

The lawsuit could lead to Trump being questioned under oath, and draw further attention to accusations of sexual misconduct against the president by more than a dozen women. Trump has denied the claims.

At a hearing on Tuesday, Trump’s lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, argued unsuccessfully before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Schecter that Zervos’ lawsuit should not go forward until the New York Court of Appeals, and if necessary, the U.S. Supreme Court, decides the issue.

“It’s merely seeking a determination at the highest level of competent jurisdiction as to the resolution of this very important constitutional issue,” Kasowitz said.

Zervos accused Trump of subjecting her to unwanted kissing and groping after she sought career advice in 2007.

She came forward during the 2016 presidential campaign, and Trump called her allegations lies. He also retweeted a post calling Zervos’ claims a “hoax.”

The White House has labeled as liars more than a dozen women who have publicly accused Trump of sexual misconduct.

Kasowitz said at Tuesday’s hearing that he may seek to exclude from the case any evidence about other women who have accused Trump of sexual misconduct, though he did not make a formal motion.

Schechter set a schedule for exchange of evidence, saying it should begin with documents. Depositions of the parties must be done by Jan. 31, 2019, raising the possibility that Trump would have to submit to questioning by Zervos’ lawyers before that date.

A state appeals court last month refused to stay the Zervos case while it considered Trump’s appeal of a Schecter order in March that the case go ahead. Trump is now asking the Court of Appeals to impose a stay.

Schechter said on Tuesday she was allowing the case to proceed because the appeals court did not issue a stay. In March, she said there was no authority to dismiss litigation related “purely to unofficial conduct” solely because he occupied the White House.

“No one is above the law,” the judge wrote then.

Zervos’ lawyer, Mariann Wang, said multiple judges had rebuffed Trump’s argument and the case should be go ahead.

“We understand it should be orderly. We want to cooperate with defendant in good faith to figure out when and how to proceed,” she said.

Kasowitz and Wang both declined to comment after the hearing.

Trump is facing legal pressure from other women as well. Among them, adult film star Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, filed suit against him in March in a challenge to a nondisclosure agreement to keep her quiet about a sexual encounter she said she had with Trump in 2006.
