Signature Sound's official slogan, "U.R.B.A.N.I.T.Y." represents the alternative[?] values of the four problems artists/people face while living in this era: ethical, social, economic, and ecological. The "U" stands for "Unity and Harmony", where the cultural resources from different genres are combined to create harmony and unity. In this context, this exhibition is not only staying within it's comfort zones of music, video, and performances, but also researched and produced works for transmedia[?] content. [29.10.19] ✧ 21-22 days of productivity

(as my last post says I need to work on my posting times..)

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week! This is my typical morning view, which is nice until I wake up with sun on my face.

Yesterday I met with my advisor and I also met with another advisor who used to be the undergraduate anth advisor! She was absolutely amazing, and she has given me the best advice and encouragement I have received for grad school thus far in this strenuous process of applying to grad school. She talked to me for an hour!! During her office hours!! People like her remind me why I love my discipline, why I love talking with experts in the field, and why I need to continue seeking help and advice even if I have a lot of disregard and disinterest thrown into my face, and in some cases it overwhelms me more than it helps. She lulled all of my worries.

Today is a very relaxed day. I ordered some chakra mala beads, essential oils, and last night my incense burner came in. (: I’ve recently taken into consideration this new thing that self-care is often incorporated into daily activities, and it is very easy for me to incorporate it into my work. While I’m at my desk working I can light the incense or put lavender behind my ears. Or I will sit on the floor and stretch while reading.

I meditate 30 minutes to an hour every day: 15-30 minutes before bed to put me to sleep (and that’s an understatement: it works so well) and 15-30 to wake up in a good and productive mood. 

Even though it can seem like an extra chore, I promise you: self-care matters. You can’t get anything done “on the outside” if everything is messy on the inside! Mindfulness and meditation is also a valuable self-care method and one that will serve you in the present and in life. 

Today’s To-dos: ✧ update call spreadsheet and make calls while I can! ✧ keep organizing graduate programs and drafting emails -- use advise from academic advisor to draft them! ✧ get in contact with professors from the geography department, economics department, and linguistics department ✧  Finish “The Fall of The House of Usher” and watch the film ✧  Complete prospectus and annotated bibliography ✧  Complete GLOBL 1 readings -- outline midterm ✧  Type out and print notes for study guides: FR and GLOBL1 Tracker: ✧ Mood: 20% overwhelmed/procrastinating, 10% motivated, 30% calm, 40% neutral ✧ Energy level: 60% ✧ Sleep: 7.5h ✧ Listening to: smiling when I die and cigarettes ✧ Water: (lost my water bottle so this is lacking but) 1 cup ✧ Vitamins: take complete vitamin tonight ✧ Medicine: taken (: ✧ Skincare: FABULOUS, same routine but added tea tree with toner and HOLY IM GLOWING -- fun tip: i also diffused a drop of tea tree and a drop of lavendar in a 150ml little spray bottle and my face just LOVES it, normally after I moisturize, before bed, or in the morning. Sometimes on my wrists and behind my ears before bed ✧ Achievements: selfcare, reaching out to care programs on campus, taking care of my mental health with all of the things I’m working on. But also feeling super accomplished in all of the work I am doing and how involved I am. Proud that I reached out to the previous undergrad advisor. Proud that I believe in myself. ✧ Goals: begin making calls for research: if you run out of time, send emails. Send grad school emails.  ✧ What made me happy today: all of my new self-care presents (: waking up and seeing my skin glowing. Excited that today is a relaxing day and hopefully I can go do some beach yoga! ✧ What made me proud today: that I got up and did all of the things I needed to do! Proud that I am acknowledging my feelings more and handling them better!

Anyone who has laced up a pair of Chucks or a feather weight pair of running shoes knows the feeling that they are doing well for their heart and body. We know that regular exercise, by any measure, has the positive effect of making your body stronger, resilient and healthier, while reducing stress and body weight. Regular exercise also improves factors linked to cardiovascular health, resulting in lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels, and better blood sugar regulation. It also helps your sympathetic nervous system (which controls your heart rate and blood pressure) to be less reactive. Exercise is a net positive for your heart and those sneakers make it feel so good. Now, you have the opportunity to do more.

We choose our sneakers with care, become brand obessed and ultimately believe that our sneakers are part of our personal uniform or regular workout gear. They deliver results and for that we are grateful. What then shall we do with those sneakers that have improved or extended our life?

Whether you are a weekend warrior, diehard gymrat or just a sneaker freak, it is estimated that 99 million people purchased a pair of sneakers last year, representing $19.6 Billion in sales. With all indications in the footwear industry pointing towards the increase in sales for both sport and fashion, to date very little work has been done to develop recycling solutions for footwear products. In fact less than 5% of end-of-life shoes are being recycled, with most being disposed of in landfill sites. One of the primary reasons is that most modern footwear products contain a complex mixture of leather, rubber, textile, polymers and metallic materials, that makes it difficult to perform complete separation and reclamation of material streams in an economically sustainable manner. It is, however, noteworthy that some large brands, including adidas, have recently gained market attention for releasing and selling over 1mm pair of sneakers made from upcylcled ocean plastic. This focus on sustainable materials is powerful and forces other brands to consider their enviornmental stewardship in materials and resources.

In the meantime, however, what can you do with those gently used trainers? These shoes have plenty of life left and more miles to carry. Reuse is the most powerful and personal impact we can make. And it is easy, fun, engaging and enlightening. For the past 5 years, my company has been expanding our ShoeBox Recycling program, which invites recyclers to pack up their gently used shoes for reuse to over 50 countries around the globle including the US. With over 4,000 organizations participating across every state in the US, we have recycled for reuse over 2mm pounds of shoes. Further, we have delivered over $1mm in valuable fundraising dollars to these organizations. At the core of our program, we have elevated the recycling experience to a human level by allowing all participants to connect with the recipient of their shoes through our SoleMate note program. Each recycler is encouraged to print a special, coded note and to share a story, draw a picture and place the note in the shoe. Your shoes will be sent along and the recipient is invited to log into our website and we will notify you when your SoleMate is found.
