Are you confused why someone might support someone who emits behaviors we describe as narcissistic? When we look at contingencies maintaining behavior it often reveals all the learning processes (quadrants) are in effect. There may also be limited opportunities for reinforcing consequences. In other words, these “allies” may be just as “stuck” if not more so than others who contact narcissists. We will go into this more and how it impacts animal industries and animal welfare in the Global Online Animal Training Series presentation, The Secret in the Animal Training Industry. Join us Monday February 28, 2022 11:00 AM Central. Members of www.AnimalTrainingFundamentals.com can attend free and earn a badge for their participation to add to your resume or performance evaluation. Non-members are welcome to attend for $29.95. Another year passing can get us nostalgic. I was talking to GOATS presenter Annette Pedersen about animals in her childhood and she told me about gerbils her family had that were allowed to roam free in their home and going to the park to feed birds and squirrels. Annette says “I clearly remember how the squirrels came down from the tree. I rested my open hand on the tree waiting, holding my breath while the squirrel slowly came down circling around the tree moving. When they came down to eat the chopped nuts, they sometimes rested one of their paws on my hand. I tried not to blink, because that could scare them away. One thing I did learn was PATIENCE… tons of patience! My grandmother taught me that. We just all loved animals, I guess.” Check out these great photos of Annette, her father and grandmother enjoying the gerbils and animals in the park. Her stories reminded me of similar experiences from my childhood, maybe for you too? They also had us thinking about the impact of those experiences on our work as animal trainers, especially when it comes to sensitivity to body language and the ability to make progress quickly towards behavior goals. Next Monday (January 10th) in our Global Online Animal Training Series Annette will be exploring strategies to achieve your training goals when conditions are not always ideal. Join us to get some great ideas to achieve to your training goals. It sure is inspiring to see animals trained to perfection to participate in medical procedures. And that is an admirable goal to which to aspire. But let’s get real! Sometimes we are in situations in which medical care or a procedure is needed now and the animal is not yet fully trained. We can still aim for high standards in animal welfare. Little to no stress can be possible when we look at the big picture, and also consider things like the tools you will use to get a procedure done. Remember this photo of a young lion getting a vaccination after just a few days of training? How is this possible? This is just one of the things Annette Pedersen will be exploring in her presentation “When there is No Way? Take the High Way! Equipment Ideas, Creative Ideas and Collaborations to Help You Accomplish Your Training Goals. This first in our Global Online Animal Training Series will be presented January 10, 2022.
