fics do some weird stuff with kanto’s culture to try to explain the “independent journeying at age ten” thing but i think sticking too closely to the anime’s americanization harms it. legal age of adulthood at ten and you’re essentially tossed out on your own? incongruously depressing. a communal culture in which this is an expected phase many people go through and trainers are expected to be supported + treated kindly during their journey (free healing, overnight stays at pokémon centers, trading, gift pokémon, and move tutors)? interesting! building on a cultural value that isn’t as present in american culture! still leaves room for variation between regions and others being weirded out by certain aspects of the kanto storyline while engaging in good faith with the worldbuilding
#alola angst gremlins i feel you but folks demonize the early games open endedness and sense of childhood adventure wayyyy too much#even most people on ash’s journey are kind those who aren’t are outliers#and that’s WITH the anime’s slightly mean spirited vibes at times#the recent games have swung so hard in the other direction i’m kinda sad . it can be regional cultural shifts but i know it’s mostly modern#globalization and sanitization to make it less awkward for overseas markets#(i mean the US there. ‘independent child adventure’ are alive and well in many series that don’t cater to the world outside japan
