Update

Hey guys! It has been a while since I’ve posted on here. Spring 2018 was a  very busy semester, especially with me taking three stem courses at the same time which I have never done before.

Before the semester started, I traveled to Honduras for a week in January to do volunteer work as part of Smith College Global Medical Brigade. During this week, Smith volunteers and other college volunteers shadowed doctors in a clinic, interacted with community members, learned about the culture, and were part of a public health construction project. 

This was such an amazing experience. I learned about the health care system in another country (the positive and negatives), how Global Brigades as an organization helps increase health care access to rural communities, I also got to shadow doctors and helped build a latrine for a family in need. More importantly, since Spanish is my first language, I got to talk to the community members, learn about their lives and interacted with the kids.

During the semester, there were a lot of cool things that happened. 

In my genomes and genetics lab course, we got the chance to look at many things under a microscope; muscle cells, plant cells, and even my own chromosomes. 

For my chromosomes, I had to use photoshop to cut them, pair them by size, organize them larger to smaller and put them into separate groups. Not gonna lie, it was a lot of work, especially the cutting out part, but in the end, it looked cool!

Last week I had the incredible privilege to embark on a medical and dental brigade in the small community of Diriangen, located in Jinotega, Nicaragua. Here I met Yubelca, the sweetest girl in the entire world. She has the most pure smile you will ever see, and an even purer heart that not even a language barrier could get in the way of. She, as well as the rest of the community, came to us with illnesses that were so preventable, with many being caused by not having access to clean water (something I take for granted on a daily basis). It was so rewarding to work with them in triage, consultation, and pharmacy, and to help build a natural water filtration system to help 220 families have direct access to clean water for the first time. This community taught me more than I could have ever imagined in the time that I had there. I went there to better the community, but in the end, the community bettered me so much more. I left part of my heart in Nicaragua, and took a part of Nicaragua with me that will never leave. Thank you Diriangen for teaching me the true definition of unconditional love and compassion. I will never forget how much of an impact this trip had on my heart, and I will forever be indebted to the wonderful community of Diriangen for developing me into a better version of myself. Member Appreciation Post! Over this past winter break 7 of our SUA family embarked on a journey to Panama with the SU chapter of Global Brigades to promote sustainable public health, bond with the community, and provide relief where there is limited healthcare. They volunteered for about a week, immersed in a new culture and place to spread health education and compassion to the people of Panama.
