Glorious got a school bus! Yesterday was an exciting day for us as we used the school bus for the first time! Kids were lining up to check out the bus and some didn't even want to get off the bus when we got to their stop. The bus will ensure that our current students have access to a safe ride to and from school. The bus also plays an important role in achieving our goal of operational sustainability (current students will pay to use the bus and having the bus will attract new students who are able to pay school fees). We have already received phone calls from prospective students after just one day of using the bus! #mamahope #sustainability #globaladvocates (at Arusha, Tanzania)

A Home in Kisumu
It's a bit incredible when I think about how quickly I've come to think of Kisumu as home. I find myself already dreading leaving, saying goodbye to everyone I've met and laughed with here (let me tell you there is a lot of laughing, and giggling). I love when the evening starts to come and the temperature slowly settles down until a walk down the road no longer brings rolling beads of sweat. I relish my trips on the mutatus (a small bus/taxi combination) and the uniquely tricked out (or not) interior on each one and their sometimes perplexing music choices. When I walk around the farm with a breeze coming off the fish ponds, the blue sky above me and the quiet sounds of fish coming up to feed, its a paradise of possibility and peace.
The compound where we live!
If it weren't for all of the various hosts and friends here, I'm sure this transition would not have been as seamless. Every night and morning I get to see my roommate, and fellow Mama Hope Global Advocate, the wonderful Ali. She's always there for inspiration, some uplifting gratitude, or commiseration over our dire internet connection. Erick and David are Ali's partners for her project here at the Akili Preparatory School and are always there for advice and giggles. Eva and Sheila are two superwomen who also happen to be married to Erick and David respectively. Both of their homes are right across the compound from ours and thanks to their welcoming nature and our rotating dinner parties we get to see them multiple times a day along with their alternating stoic and silly young daughters. Mama Hope's East Africa Coordinator, Hannah, and Media Advocate, Ryan, stayed in Kisumu for 5 days to welcome us with their perfect blend of adventure, silliness, heart, and brilliance (thanks friends!).

A mutatu!
Erick, my community partner
Now let's talk about my project partner, Erick. Not only do I feel at home in this city, but thanks to him I feel at home with my project. I had seen pictures of Erick, heard stories of him, and had spoken with him only about 2 times over the phone. None of this could have prepared me for this gentle, dedicated, fastidious jokester. He's bursting with ideas and passion to make this farm the sustainable support that the Rescue Center needs. One of my favorite times so far has been the hour we spent in his office one afternoon brainstorming and listing all of our ideas for the farm. He brought up goats to which I quickly replied : "Erick, how did you know I LOVE goats?!" He, of course, responded with his trademark giggle. Together we've already mapped out the budget for the Rescue Center operations over the next few months as well as planned out how to use these next few months and the funds raised to get this farm as productive and sustainable as possible.
The farm crew: Chris, James, Joseph, and Erick
The Rita Rose Garden & Sustainable Farm!
I’m so excited to tell you all about all the plans Erick and I have come up with for the farm. With these new additions and improvements on the wonderful foundation that already exists, this farm is going be a thriving and steady source of sustainable income for the Rescue Center so that kids will be taken care of without worry for generations to come! Erick, Chris the farm manager, and I went out to plan and measure on Tuesday and mapped out how we can fit in a new greenhouse, a new fish pond, drip and sprinkler irrigation, new pipes to properly feed water to the ponds, a composting system, banana trees, new “magic trees” for the bees to feed on, and dairy goats!
It’s so fun walking around the farm with these two men who are so knowledgable and experienced and yet listen to every idea and question I have. They take my teasing and endless questions well and our work meetings are filled with self-congratulatory fist bumps. It truly feels like a partnership with Erick and everyone at the farm, OLPS, and the Rescue Center; and one that I am overjoyed to be in.
With a drought currently dragging on, we’re hoping to start laying pipes for the irrigation as soon as possible since right now everything is being hand watered. All of the projects we're planning are ones that will contribute to the long-term survival of the care that the Rescue Center provides.
Some of the children at the Rescue Center
Drilling the well at the Rescue Center
Since arriving, I've come to see even more why the Rescue Center needs this farm. I spent an afternoon at the Rescue Center up high in the cooler hills above the city. That day a well was being drilled by another organization so that a large part of the budget didn't have to be spent on bringing water in from the city. Eight children have already been moved in because of their emergency situations and they greeted us all in a line with high fives and handshakes and shy smiles. This new home for the children is beautiful and nurturing and I'm so so glad it's here for them. Here they are receiving counseling, here they have the food and nutrition they need and a cozy bed to sleep in. They go to school, they play, and they have a full staff that makes sure they are receiving the care that their particular case requires.
Erick and the whole crew at the farm have worked so hard to make this soil, these bees, these ponds, and greenhouses as healthy and productive as possible and it's such a joy that I get to be part of the next chapter that will build on their past successes. Isn't it incredible that we can all contribute to this project and their dream? That we can be part of their hope for the future of this land and this building and these children? I know these children have it in them to be future leaders and change-makers and if we can in some way contribute to unlocking that potential then we are the lucky ones, my friends.
My dream is that in a few months Erick, Chris, Joseph, and James will look out over the farm and see all of their land green and productive and healthy. My dream is to leave Kisumu knowing that the Rescue Center has the food and income it needs to care for these children who have all the potential in the world. My dream is to spread this project’s lessons of empowerment, sustainability, love, and possibility.
Thank for following, supporting, and dreaming with me!

Here lies the beginning of a dream. It's somehow liberating to say that it isn't my dream, but instead one that I am trying to expedite for a school of children in Mlali, Tanzania. There is less vulnerability when a dream is disowned. I think that is why we all separate ourselves from what we believe, from what we dream. We say, "But that isn't realistic".
Here I am, though, helping it become reality. Maybe, in this light, we can dare to dream.
'Jipe moyo utashinda.'
Encourage yourself, you will succeed.

My two worlds have collided! Mama Pelis and Mama Faith, who work at Queen Elizabeth Academy in Mlali, are visiting Glorious School in Arusha this week to learn and exchange ideas with Alice! It has been amazing to reunite with Mama Pelis and Mama Faith and to hear all about what they have been working on at QEA. Can't wait to see what this week will bring! #globaladvocates #mamahope ❤️❤️❤️ (at Arusha, Tanzania)

We tried helping out the builders at the boarding house yesterday. Not sure how much actual help we were but we definitely provided some laughs after a long day of work! The boarding house is just one of the sustainability initiates QEA is working on. One benefit of the boarding house is that it will allow wealthier families from the city, who are able to pay school fees, to send their children to school at QEA. The fees from these children will allow the school to support even more vulnerable children from Mlali who cannot afford to pay. #sustainability #mamahope #GlobalAdvocates #QEA #sameskirtdifferentday 🔖 (at Mlali, Morogoro, Tanzania)

One of my favorite parts of working with QEA so far is having outdoor meetings! Today we met with the builder of the shop units. He measured out the foundation and is hoping to start digging and laying the foundation this week! Once the shop units are done, they will provide rent-free space for the school to sell their surplus from the school farm and fish pond. Yay #sustainability! #mamahope #GlobalAdvocates #QEA (at Mlali, Morogoro, Tanzania)

Barbara and I have now spent a little over a week getting ourselves acquainted with our new home! We have met the most inspirational group of people and could not be more thankful for being welcomed into their community. Here's a picture of us on the foundation of the new boarding house for Queen Elizabeth Academy ("QEA")! We can't wait to get involved and to see how it progresses over the next few months! #mamahope #GlobalAdvocates #QEA #sustainability @barbbemer @hannahclyne @lexispaulding (at Dodoma, Tanzania)
