‘Arnold’s Caribbean Pizza’ is more Jamaican than anything else, at least when it comes to the talent and the writers. Along with #Grammy award-winning musician Fabian Cooke taking the lead in the writer’s room, penning most of the first season’s episodes, lead actress of the series Judi Johnson wrote her own episode. The countries of Europe have long been numbered among the most lucrative markets for reggae artistes, owing to the numerous huge festivals staged there, especially during the summer months. Entertainers who needed to visit #Europe for work purposes simply had to secure documentation from the promoters who were hiring them, and then apply for a Schengen visa. However, with the #coronavirus #pandemic having the world on its knees, a new set of rules and regulations may be implemented. “Education is the pathway to freedom, and every child deserves the opportunity to walk down that path”. – Stephen Marley. This quote from one of Bob Marley’s sons has been a pivotal guiding principle behind the conception and design of the Cornerstone Learning Centre, located at the intersection of East Road and 4th Street in Trench Town, Kingston, according to executive director of the Ghetto Youths Foundation, Eva Silverstein. Stephen and his brothers, Damian and Julian, are the principals of Ghetto Youths Foundation which funded the state-of-the-art facility, designed with a flexible learning space in the form of an academic study hall, computer lab and learning library. Imagine getting a call from the foundation of one of Jamaica’s greatest musicians letting you know his family have been noticing your work and would love to have you create a mural in honour of his 75th birthday? That was the reality of local artist Paige Taylor, who was last week invited by the Bob Marley Foundation to create an art piece that is expected to sit on the walls of the official residence of the late reggae icon forever. The mural was unveiled during Marley’s 75th birthday celebrations at the Bob Marley Museum last Thursday afternoon Visit the link in @jamaicagleaner stories to read more. She speaks one language – #dance. If ever an opportunity arises to start a conversation with the owner and artistic director of the Dance Forever Contemporary Theatre Company, Michelle Allison Pilgrim, don’t let it pass. The #Trinidadian is on an expedition to reach the pinnacle of dance education, and it just so happens that Jamaica is her present stop, where she is studying the L’Antech, a modern contemporary Caribbean dance technique, with its creator Dr L’Antoinette Stines. “As technical dancers, we are exposed to ballet and Horton’s Technique, etc., which is how we are trained. So to learn that someone from the Caribbean dared to use those foundations to create their own technique, I find that is amazing,” Pilgrim told The Gleaner.
